AB - Climate change, through changes in temperature, precipitation, and frequency of extreme events, has influenced agricultural production and food security over the past several decades. In order to assess climate and weather-related risks to fruit and grape production in Serbia, changes in bioclimatic indices and frequency of the occurrence of unfavourable weather events are spatially analysed for the past two decades (1998–2017) and the standard climatological period 1961–1990. Between the two periods, the Winkler and Huglin indices changed into a warmer category in most of the viticultural regions of Serbia. The average change shift was about 200 m towards higher elevations. Regarding the frequency of spring frost, high summer temperatures and water deficit, the most vulnerable regions in terms of fruit and grape production are found alongside large rivers (Danube, Sava, Great and South Morava), as well as in the northern part of the country. Regions below 300 m are under increased risk of high summer temperatures, as the number and duration of occurrences increased significantly over the studied periods. The high-resolution spatial analysis presented here gives an assessment of the climate change influence on the fruit and grapes production. The presented approach may be used in regional impact assessments and national planning of adaptation measures, and it may help increase resilience of agricultural production to climate change.

AB - Over the last two decades, Serbian agriculture has suffered increased losses and damages due to the more frequent occurrence of the extreme weather events caused by the climate change. The most significant losses are recorded in years with droughts and high summer temperature (such as 2012 and 2017). Significant losses in orchards are caused by the frost in late winter or early spring, when the flowering occurs early, due to a prolonged period of unusually high temperatures. On the other hand, damages caused by low winter temperatures are decreasing.

In order to assess the risk levels brought by the climate change and extreme weather events to the agricultural plant production in different regions of the country, analyzed are frequency of the occurrence of the weather events that may have significant negative effect to the yields of the most important crops (corn, maize, sunflower, soybeans) and fruits (plum, peach, raspberry, apple, wine grape), as well as pastures and meadows. Vulnerability is assessed through the analysis of agricultural production structure in the administrative districts of Serbia.

Weather events with potentially negative effect to yields and most vulnerable phenophases are defined for each crop or fruit considered in the analysis. For each plant and each potentially dangerous weather event one or more bioclimatic indices were adopted and calculated for the past, present and future. For the present (2000-2019), daily data on temperature and precipitation were used from the eOBS gridded observations dataset. Results of 8 regional climate models from the EURO-CORDEX initiative were combined into an ensemble. The ensemble was constructed upon the evaluation of their ability to simulate past climate characteristics over the country. The chosen simulations are done under the RCP8.5 IPCC greenhouse gasses emission scenario, for the periods 1986-2005, 2021-2040, 2041-2060 and 2081-2100.

Results showed that projected frequencies of the events such are water deficit and/or droughts and high temperatures in the critical phenophases of the considered plants, and late spring frost, are increasing in the future. The median value of the frequency of those weather events projected for the next 20 years is mostly already reached. Therefore, more weight is given to the 75th percentile of the ensemble projections for the increasing risks and the 25th percentile for the decreasing risks, as upper and lower limits of the most probable range of the future climate changes.

This assessment is used for drafting the National Climate Change Adaptation Plan in order to propose and prioritize adaptation measures for the agricultural sector in the Republic of Serbia, on the national and administrative districts level.

AB - Domesticated international (standard) apple cultivars, together with resistant apple cultivars are the core of the Serbian apple production. Furthermore, autochthonous cultivars are characterized by a good adaptability to the local environmental conditions and represent a valuable source of genetic variability, as well as an important source of the gene pool for further breeding programs. Additionally, they show a higher phenolic content and a stronger antioxidant activity, in comparison to commercial cultivars. Therefore, they are more likely to be used as a functional food. The subjects of this study were seventeen samples of fruits and leaves from autochthonous apple cultivars, five international standard cultivars, and six resistant apple cultivars. The phenolic profile was determined using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC), coupled with a diode array detector and a TSQ Quantum Access Max triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer. A total of twenty compounds were quantified in the samples. Most of the analyzed phenolics were detected in higher amounts in the peel, compared to the mesocarp. The results of the multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) indicate that 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid is present in the highest amount in the mesocarp, while in the peel and leaves, quercetin-glycosides were detected in the highest amount. According to the MANOVA: phloretin, phlorizin, 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid, kaempferol, and p-coumaric acid are present in significantly higher levels in the autochthonous cultivars, compared to the standard and resistant ones (in both fruits and leaves). Therefore, these compounds can be used as chemical tracers of the apple varietal origin. © 2022 by the authors.

AB - Extreme weather and climate events over the past years have been bringing damage and
losses to agricultural production in Serbia.
As a part of the development of the National climate change adaptation plan, weather and
climate events and extremes that may significantly influence the growth of agricultural plant,
their quality and yields, were defined as a first step in the climate change risk assessment
within the agriculture sector. Such events included: high summer temperature, low winter
temperature, spring frost, drought, intense precipitation, floods, hail and storms, but also
slow-onset changes such as inter annual redistribution of precipitation and rising air
temperatures. Based on the selected potentially dangerous phenomena, bioclimatic indices
were formulated for various fruit species, grapevine, strategically important field crops,
meadows and pastures.
The degree of exposure to selected weather and climate events was assessed for the past,
present and future, based on the analysis of daily data on temperature and precipitation from
the eOBS gridded observations dataset (2000-2019) and projections of 8 regional climate
models under the RCP8.5 greenhouse gases emission scenario, for the periods 1986-2005,
2021-2040, 2041-2060, 2081-2100. The vulnerability assessment was done for the
administrative districts and the entire territory of the Republic of Serbia based on the
valuation of the severity of socio-economic consequences that considered events might have.
The risk assessment was done combining the estimated levels of exposure and vulnerability.

bujnost, rodnost i kvalitet ploda devet sorti trešnje ranog vremena sazrevanja.
zrenja plodova u drugoj polovini maja.
Rozita (1,2 kg), a najviši sorta Merchant (4,1 kg).

AB - Almond production in Serbia is very small. The main reason for this is the frequent occurrence
of late spring frosts during flowering. Present study was carried out to evaluate phenological
characteristics (flowering and maturity times), productivity, and characteristics of the nut and the
kernel (nut weight and dimensions, shell thickness, weight of kernel, kernel share, oil and protein
contents) in 13 almond genotypes of a different origin growing in the region of Belgrade. The
average flowering time was the second half of March and the first decade of April. The
flowering began first in ‛Nessebarʼ, ‛Selection 25ʼ, and ‛Tétényi kedvencʼ (16th of March), and
latest in ‛Francoliʼ, and ‛Texasʼ (29th of March). Beginning of the fruit maturity was recorded in
the range of 13 days, from August 15th (‛Tétényi bőtermőʼ and ‘Tétényi keményhéjúʼ) to August
28th (‛Glorietaʼ). The average productivity was the lowest in ‛Glorietaʼ and ‛Francoliʼ and the
highest in ‛Tuonoʼ. In March 2017 late spring frost that significantly reduced yield in early
flowering cultivars was recorded. Nut weight ranged from 1.95 g (‛Budatétényʼ) to 5.58 g
(‛Marconaʼ). Shell thickness varied from 1.71 mm (‛Budatétényʼ) to 5.06 mm (‛Marconaʼ).
Kernel weight was the lowest in ‛Selection 25ʼ (0.80 g) and ‛Tuonoʼ (0.81 g), and the highest in
‛Texasʼ (1.30 g). Kernel share was the lowest in ‛Selection 25ʼ (16.03%), and the highest in
‛Budatétényʼ (57.93%). Oil content ranged from 44.35% (‛Glorietaʼ) to 57.52% (‛Budatétényʼ),
and protein content ranged from 21.72% (‛Budatétényʼ) to 30.51% (‛Selection 25ʼ). Obtained
results indicate that Belgrade region is suitable for growing of late flowering almond cultivars.

AB - Growth and productivity characteristics (shoot length, flower bud density, fruit set, fruit weight, yield per tree, trunk cross-sectional area and yield efficiency) were studied in 15 apricot cultivars in the Belgrade area during the period of two years (2013-2014). The cultivar ‘Hungarian Best’ was used as a control for comparison. The average length of fruiting shoots ranged from 68.8 to 84.5 cm, and the number of flower buds per 1 cm of shoot length varied from 0.40 to 1.20. Nine cultivars are characterized by higher flower bud density in comparison to the control cultivar. The average fruit set ranged from 2.4 to 36.2%. Compared to control, fruit set was significantly higher in ‘Cegledi Arany’ and ‘Roxana’, while it was lower in ‘Laycot’. The average fruit weight ranged from 39.3 to 88.9 g. Compared to control, fruit weight was significantly higher in five cultivars: ‘Sophia’, ‘Neptun’, ‘Roxana’, ‘Cegledy Arany’, and ‘Goldrich’, and it was lower in two cultivars: ‘Ninfa’ and ‘Tomcot’. The average yield per tree was the lowest in the control cultivar, ‘Hungarian Best’ (6.6 kg) and the highest in ‘Sylred’ (29.6 kg). In majority of cultivars (ten) the yield was significantly higher than in the control cultivar. The lowest vigor was recorded in ‘Neptun’, and the highest in ‘Ninfa’. All cultivars had higher cumulative yield efficiency than the control (‘Hungarian Best’ with 0.13 kg cm-2) and it ranged from 0.18 to 0.49 kg cm-2.

AB - Effect of irrigation on fruit quality and yield of Red Cap apple variety depending on crop load were studied. The aim of the paper is to determine how many apple fruits can be left on trees in third vegetation, growth under different irrigation treatments (without irrigation, normal irrigation - control and increased irrigation - double irrigation rate). For the Red Cap variety in the third year after planting, in order to achieve good fruit quality and satisfactory yield, it is necessary to leave a maximum of 25 fruits per tree, or 3.5 fruits per cm2of trunk cross-sectional area (TCSA). Different irrigation treatments have influence on the fruit size, the proportion of first class fruits, as well as the degree of ripeness of the fruits. Increased irrigation during the months of July and August affects these parameters, but to a lesser extent than the crop load. The largest irrigation effect on the increase of fruit size had trees from crop load III, who had 5,5 fruits per cm2 of TCSA. Increased irrigation during July and August had no statistically significant effect on tested parameters on trees that had less than 4,5 fruits per cm2 of TCSA and trees that had more than 6,5 fruits per cm2 of TCSA.

AB - Evaluation of 11 introduced Canadian apricot cultivars was conducted in the region of Belgrade during
a six-year period (2009‡2014). Control cultivar for comparison was ‘Hungarian Best’. Studies have included
time of flowering and ripening, yield, and fruit quality. In addition, self-(in)compatibility trait was studied
by means of fluorescence microscopy. Canadian cultivars began to flower one to five days before ‘Hungarian
Best’, while average harvest date was earlier in four cultivars, and later in seven cultivars. Compared with the
control cultivar, significantly higher yield was achieved in cultivars ‘Harcot’, Harojoy’, ‘Sundrop’, ‘Harogem’,
and ‘Harostar’. Significantly larger fruit size was achieved in ‘Laycot’, while smaller size was found in cultivars
‘Harlayne’, ‘Harglow’, ‘Harostar’ and ‘Sundrop’. Most of the introduced cultivars had better scores for fruit appearance,
while scores for fruit quality were lower or at the same level as in control cultivar. Nine of studied cultivars
were self-incompatible, while only two were self-compatible (‘Harlayne’ and ‘Harogem’).

fenološke osobine, bujnost, rodnost i kvalitet ploda 14 stonih sorti šljive. Kao standard za
poređenje je uzeta sorta Čačanska lepotica. Cvetanje ispitivanih sorti je bilo krajem marta i u
prvoj polovini aprila, a zrenje plodova od kraja juna (Boranka) do početka septembra (Pozna
plava).
pokazale sorte: Valor, Empres, Prezident, Tophit i Čačanska najbolja.

farm “Radmilovac” of the Faculty of Agriculture in Belgrade during the two–year period (2016-2017).
Control cultivar for peaches was ‘Redhaven’, and for nectarines ‘Stark Redgold’. For all studied traits
statistically significant differences between cultivars were found. The average length of shoots
varied from 62.4 to 76.8 cm, diameter from 5.9 to 8.0 mm, and internode length from 2.45 to 3.00
cm. The length of basal part of a shoot without flower buds was on average lower in nectarines (3.9
cm) than in peaches (9.1 cm). Peach cultivar ‘Tardibelle’ is characterized by the longest basal part of
a shoot without flower buds (22.2 cm). All studied peach cultivars are characterized by lower flower
bud density compared to control (‘Redhaven’). In nectarines, most of the studied cultivars had
flower bud density similar to control (‘Stark Redgold’). Cultivars with higher flower bud density such
as peaches: ‘Redhaven’, ‘Maria Marta’, ‘Autumn Glo’, and nectarines ‘Rita Star’, ‘Maria Carla’, ‘Orion’
require severe pruning in order to obtain better fruit size. On the other hand, cultivars with lower
flower bud density e.g. ‘Tardibelle’, ‘Flavorcrest’, ‘Royal Glory’, ‘Bolero’, ‘Maria Lucia’ should be
pruned slightly in order to obtain higher yield.

AB - The main goal of breeding and testing of rootstocks for sweet cherry is to obtain small and
productive trees and to improve precocity. The objective of this study was to examine the influence
of six rootstocks on vigor and productive characteristics of young sweet cherry trees. The
experimental orchard is situated at the Experimental farm “Radmilovac”, of the Faculty of
Agriculture (near Belgrade). Three sweet cherry cultivars: ‘Kordia’, ‘Karmen’ and ‘Regina’ were
grafted on six rootstocks: Prunus mahaleb L. seedlings, ‘Colt’, ‘Ma×Ma 14’, ‘Gisela 6’, ‘Gisela 5’ and
‘Oblačinska’ sour cherry. During a two-year period (2015-2016) the following characteristics were
studied: scion diameter above the grafting union, rootstock diameter under the grafting union,
length and diameter of shoots, height of the tree and the number of spurs per tree. The results
showed different influence of rootstocks on the tree vigor, spur formation and precocity. The
average diameter of the scion in all tested cultivars was the largest on the Mahaleb rootstock. The
largest average number of spurs per tree in the second year was recorded on cherry trees grafted on
the rootstocks ‘Gisela 6’ and ‘Oblačinska’ sour cherry (28 and 23 respectively). The lowest average
number of spurs (6) was found on trees grafted on the rootstock ‘Colt’.

AB - Characteristics of productivity and growth (yield per tree, trunk cross-sectional area, yield efficiency
and fruit weight) were studied in 40 apricot cultivars of early and medium early maturity in the
Belgrade area during the six-year period (2009 – 2014). The cultivar ‘Hungarian Best’ was used as a
control for comparison. The period of study was divided to initial bearing (age of trees three and
four years) and full bearing (age of trees from five to eight years). Significant differences in yield
between cultivars and years were found. Average yield in the period of initial bearing ranged from
0.3 to 11.3 kg per tree, and in the period of full bearing from 5.6 to 24.8 kg per tree. Compared with
the control cultivar, significantly higher yield was obtained in 17 cultivars. Adverse weather
conditions resulted in significant reduction of yield in two out of six years of study. Cumulative yield
efficiency varied from 0.17 to 0.87 kg/cm2 and in 19 cultivars it was significantly higher compared
with the control cultivar. Fruit weight ranged from 27.7 to 80.1 g. Compared with control, fruit
weight was significantly higher in nine cultivars, and significantly lower in 11 cultivars.

AB - Phenological traits, yield and fruit characteristics of ten plum cultivars bred at the Fruit Research Institute in Čačak were studied in the region of Belgrade in the period of four years (2012-2015). Average time of flowering of tested cultivars was in the first half of April. The earliest flowering was recorded in ‘Čačanska Rana’ and ‘Valerija’, at the latest in ‘Zlatka’. The range of fruit maturity was about 2.5 months, from June 24 (‘Boranka’) to September 6 (‘Pozna Plava’). The average yield per tree was the lowest in ‘Boranka’ (7.8 kg) and the highest in ‘Čačanska Najbolja’ (23.6 kg). The cultivars ‘Čačanska Rodna’, ‘Nada’ and ‘Valerija’ stand out for high cumulative yield efficiency (0.34 to 0.36 kg/cm2). Fruit weight was the lowest in the cultivar ‘Mildora’ (23.9 g), and the highest in the cultivar ‘Čačanska Rana’ (51.3 g). The cultivar ‘Zlatka’ is distinguished by a small stone (weight of 0.83 g and the share in a fruit weight of 3.1%). The cultivars ‘Mildora’, ‘Pozna Plava’ and ‘Čačanska Rodna’ are characterized by high soluble solids content (19.8-21.0%), while the cultivars ‘Mildora’ and ‘Nada’ are characterized by low acid content (0.47-0.48%) and a very sweet taste. The highest scores for fruit appearance obtained the cultivars ‘Čačanska Najbolja’, ‘Čačanska Rana’ and ‘Nada’, and for taste the cultivars ‘Nada’, ‘Mildora’ and ‘Čačanska Rodna’.

AB - The influence of three different planting densities on yield of three peach cultivars: ‛Early O’
Henry’, ‛Sunprince’, and ‛Autumn Glo’, and two nectarine cultivars: ‘Vinčanka’ (clone of
‛Stark Redgold’) and ‛Max 7’ was studied during three-year period (2009-2011). In high
density planting, seedlings of vineyard peach were planted at the space of 3.5 x 1 m (2,800
trees ha-1) and grafted at the height of 50 cm. The trees were trained as a new original training
system named ‘Sloping Leader’ that is characterized with a central leader that is bent and
follows row direction at an angle of 25° to the trunk. In standard experimental plot, one-year
old peach trees were planted and trained as ‘Fusetto’ form (4 x 2 m; 1,250 trees ha-1) and
Open Vase (4 x 4 m, 625 trees ha-1). The following characteristics were studied: yield per tree
and unit area (ha), as well as yield efficiency based on trunk cross-sectional area and on
crown projection area. In the first three years of cropping significantly higher yields were
achieved in the high-density planting system. Yield efficiency expressed based on the crown
projection area, was also significantly higher in the high-density planting system.

Yield efficiency expressed based on the crown
projection area, was also significantly higher in the high-density planting system.",

AB - The evaluation of seven introduced apricot cultivars originated from Slovak Republic was
carried out in the region of Belgrade over a period of five years (2009–2013). Control cultivar
for comparison was ‘Hungarian Best’. Among studied cultivars small differences in flowering
time were found (1–5 days). Average maturing time of introduced cultivars was from June, 18
(‘Velita’ and ‘Veselka’) to July, 15 (‘Veharda’), or from 14 days before to 13 days after the
‘Hungarian Best’. The average yield per tree ranged from 4.1 kg in ‘Veharda’ to 9.4 kg in
‘Vestar’. Compared with the control cultivar, significantly higher yield was achieved in two
cultivars: ‘Vestar’, and ‘Veselka’. The average fruit weight ranged from 40.6 g in ‘Veharda to
55.6 g in ‘Veselka’. Significantly higher fruit weight had only cultivar ‘Veselka’, while
smaller fruit weight had two cultivars: ‘Veharda’ and ‘Velita’. The content of soluble solids
varied from 12.0% in ‘Vesna’ to 17.1% in ‘VS-22/32’. Cultivars ‘VS-22/32’ and ‘Veselka’
stands out for fruit appearance, and ‘Veselka’ also for fruit quality. Among studied cultivars,
the best results were shown by ‘Veselka’ which can be recommended for growing in this
region, predominantly for fresh consumption. In addition, cultivars ‘Vestar’ and ‘Vesprima’
can also be recommended, mostly for processing.

aprila došlo do pojave poznog prolećnog mraza intenziteta -3,0°C.
Najviši prinos su dale sorte Harcot, Litoral i Re Umberto.
AB - The influence of winter and spring frost on the injury of flower buds and
flowers was studied in 33 apricot cultivars during 2012 year. The experimental
orchard was planted in 2007 at the Experimental farm “Radmilovac” of the Faculty
of Agriculture in Belgrade. The rootstock is Myrabolan (Prunus cerasifera Ehrh.)
seedling, and the tree spacing is 4 x 1.5 m.
Winter frost intensity of -20.7°C, which occurred on 9th February, caused the
average injury of 32.8% of flower buds for all studied apricot cultivars. Frost damage
was highest in cultivar ‘Mary Lady’ (98.8%), and lowest in cultivar ‘NS-6’ (12%).
Spring frost intensity of -3.0°C occurred on 10th April, after apricot cultivars
finished flowering. It caused the average injury of 61.4% of fruitlets. The damage
was lowest in cultivar ‘Bergarouge’ (18.1%), and the highest in cultivar ‘Silvercot’
(93.0%).
Due to the occurrence of winter and late spring frosts, there was a signifiucant
reduction in yield of apricot. The average yield for all cultivars was 7.2 kg per tree.
Four cultivars practically had no yield (‘Mary Lady’, ‘Palstein’, ‘Aurora’, and
‘Silvercot’). The highest yield was found in cultivars ‘Harcot’, ‘Litoral’, and ‘Re
Umberto’.

AB - Exposure of stone fruit species to high temperatures during flower-bud differentiation
leads to the occurrence of double pistils, which results in the development of double fruits. In
order to analyze this phenomenon in our ecological conditions, tests were carried out during
the three-year period (2011-2013) in the collection orchards of the Experimental farm
“Radmilovac” of the Faculty of Agriculture in Belgrade. The influence of air temperature and
rainfall on fruit doubling was studied in 16 cultivars of peaches and nectarines, 15 cultivars of
apricot and 10 cultivars of plum.
The average percentage of double fruits in a three-year period was the highest in peach
(20.0%), followed by plum (10.9%) and apricot (4.1%). In peach and nectarine cultivars the
average percentage of double fruits was the highest in 2013 (38.8%), and it was more than
three times higher comparing with other two years. In plum cultivars the average percentage
of double fruits was also the highest in 2013 (13.7%). In apricot cultivars the percentage of
double fruits was the lowest in 2013 due to very low fruit set because of unfavorable weather
conditions for pollination.

AB - The evaluation of 10 introduced apricot cultivars of French origin was carried out in the
region of Belgrade over a period of four years (2009-2012). Control cultivar for comparison
was ‘Hungarian Best’. Average time of flowering was late March and early April, while
average time of maturing ranged from June, 26 (‘Sylred’) to July, 15 (‘Helena du
Roussillon’), or from 7 days before to 12 days after the ‘Hungarian Best’. Compared with the
control cultivar, significantly higher yield was achieved in five cultivars: ‘Sylred’,
‘Bergeron’, ‘Pinkcot’, ‘Silvercot’, and ‘Bergarouge’, while significantly higher fruit weight
was found in four cultivars: ‘Silvercot’, ‘Sylred’, ‘Polonais’, and ‘Bergeron’. Among studied
cultivars, the best results were shown by ‘Sylred’, ‘Silvercot’ and ‘Pinkcot’, which can be
recommended for growing in this region, predominantly for fresh consumption. ‘Bergeron’
and ‘Bergarouge’ can also be recommended as cultivars of combined traits, both for fresh
consumption and processing.
