značajnih štetočina, uključujući i štitaste vaši (Hemiptera: Coccidae).
U cilju
karakterizacije diverziteta prirodnih neprijatelja izračunati su Shannon-Weaver (H') i
Equitability indeksi diverziteta.
Tokom istraživanja ukupno je odgajeno i determinisano 12 vrsta prirodnih neprijatelja
(šest predatora i šest parazitoida). U netretiranom delu vinograda registrovano je svih 12
vrsta entomofaga.
(Diptera). Među parazitoidima, tri vrste pripadaju familiji Aphelinidae, dve familiji
Pteromalidae i jedna familiji Encyrtidae. Najzastupljenija vrsta entomofaga bila je Eunotus
obscurus Masi (52,42%). Vrednosti Shannon-Weaver i Equitability indeksa diverziteta za
netretirani deo vinograda iznosile su 1,56, odnosno 0,36.
U tretiranom delu vinograda registrovano je šest vrsta prirodnih neprijatelja (dva
predatora i četiri parazitoida).
1,37, odnosno 0,33.
Veća vrednost Shannon-Weaver indeksa u netretiranom delu vinograda (1,56) ukazuje na
bogatiji diverzitet prirodnih neprijatelja. Niske vrednosti Equitability indeksa u oba dela

AB - Phyllocnistis vitegenella Clemens (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae) is a leafminer
of grapevine which was recorded during 2019 in Serbia for the first time. While
feeding, larvae form serpentine-like mines on leaves. This leads to the
reduction of assimilation surface, especially when the infestation level is high.
Since this is a newly introduced pest, the aim of this study was to determine its
infestation rate in a commercial vineyard throughout the vegetation season.
The research was conducted during 2020 in a commercial vineyard, Italian
Riesling variety, in Neštin area (northwest Serbia). Sampling was done once a
month starting from May to October (16.05., 14.06., 11.07., 13.08., 14.09.,
02.10.) by collecting 5 leaves from 20 randomly chosen vines (100 leaves per
sample) from a 1 ha area. Collected leaves were transported to the laboratory
for examination and rearing of larvae for the determination of species. The
infestation rate was calculated according to Shareef et al. (2016). In this
vineyard, as regular measure for the control of other grapevine pests, a total of
seven insecticide applications were performed with 14 days interval, starting
from the second decade of May to the second decade of July. Four applications
were carried out with a product based on deltamethrin (10g a.i. ha-1) and three
with chlorantraniliprole (36g a.i. ha-1). During this research, there were no
mines detected in May, June, and July. First mines were recorded in August
and infestation rate was 47%. Similar infestation rate (45%) was registered
during September. The highest infestation rate (87%) was registered in
October. The occurrence of mines on the leaves only after cessation of the
application of insecticides in the vineyard as well as the increase of infestation
rate towards the end of vegetation indicates that the applied insecticides have
a negative impact on the population of P. vitegenella.

šumskom drveću i raznim drugim višegodšnjim biljkama.
Tokom jednogodišnjeg ciklusa razvića, P. corni naseljava sve nadzemne delove biljke a disperziju vrste obezbeñuju
larve prvog i drugog stupnja.
Dobijeni
podaci su obrañeni pomoću jednofaktorske analize varijanse (ANOVA), a srednje vrednosti su poreñene Tucky
testom.

Ženke i larve P. corni preferiraju različite delove čokota vinove loze.

biljne delove u toku godine.
U fenofazi BBCH 03 (kraj bubrenja pupoljaka), 35,23% populacije ženki zauzima donji,
37,01% središnji a 26,05% vršni deo stabla. Osnovu luka naseljava 1,71% ženki. U fenofazi
BBCH 55 (cvast nabubrela, cvetovi zatvoreni, zajedno spojeni) registrovano je polaganje jaja, a
nakon toga, u fenofazi BBCH 57 (cvasti potpuno razvijene, cvetovi odvojeni) piljenje larava.
Larve prvog stupnja koncentrišu se na lisnim dršakama, listovima i zelenim lastarima. Pojava
larava drugog stupnja zabeležena je u fenofazi BBCH 77 (početak dodirivanja bobica) kada
počinje njihova migracija na osnove zelenih lastara, luk, stablo vinove loze i grozd. Većina ovih
larava naseljava vršnu trećinu stabla (36,10%) i prvu trećinu luka (31,51%) a manji broj
infestira grozdove (0,45%) i poslednju trećinu luka (0,32%).

biljne delove u toku godine.
U fenofazi BBCH 03 (kraj bubrenja pupoljaka), 35,23% populacije ženki zauzima donji,

simptome oštećenja i utvrdi procenat infestiranosti listova vinove loze.
porastom larve širi i dobija zmijolik izgled.
prisutno do pet mina.
smanjenja asimilacione površine lista a samim tim i procesa fotosinteze.
najmanja vrednost registrovana u Končarevu i Dobanovcima a najveća u lokalitetu Ada
Ciganlija.
procenat infestiranosti listova (3-14%), tokom letnjih meseci (30-42%), dok su najveće
vrednosti (45-96%) zabeležene pri kraju vegetacije, tokom septembra i oktobra.
Brzo širenje i uspešna aklimatizacija P. vitegenella u Srbiji, kao i visok stepen infestacije
listova, nameće potrebu stalnog monitoringa, ove potencijalno značajne štetočine u
vinogradima.

AB - Leafminers represent one of the most important groups among invasive
phytophagous insects, while some leaf-mining species are significant pests in
agriculture, forestry and urban areas, as well. One of them is american grapevine
leafminer, Phyllocnistis vitegenella Clemens (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae), which
has been introduced from North America to Italy (1994). Since then, this species
spread to many European countries. In Serbia, american grape leafminer was
recorded for the first time in vineyard in Neštin area, in September 2019. As this
invasive species adapts well to the new environmental conditions it has the potential
to become an important grapevine pest. Therefore, the aim of this study was to
determine distribution of P. vitegenella on grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) in Serbia.
The research was conducted during 2020 in total of 31 localities in Serbia (9
vineyards and 22 private yards). After visual inspection of grapevine, leaves with
mines that contains larvae or pupae were sampled and transported to the laboratory
where these preimaginal stages were reared in Petri dishes to adult eclosion in order
to species identification. During research, presence of P. vitegenella was recorded in
25 localities (5 vineyards and 20 private yards). The results of this research indicate
that P. vitegenella spread to many areas of our country in just one year after being
recorded for the first time in northern part of Serbia. The presence of this species on
grapevine not only in private yards, but also in vineyards, indicates its successful
acclimatization, which will be the subject of further research.

AB - San Jose scale, Comstockaspis perniciosa (Comstock) is polyphagous species which
inhabits many fruit trees, most commonly apple, pear and cherry. It is a quarantine
pest in many countries. However, in Serbia it has recently lost this status. Presence
of San Jose scale on fruits intended for export is not allowed. Presence and
harmfulness of C. perniciosa were evaluated on cherry (Prunus avium L.) during
2020/21 in Radmilovac locality. The orchard was in the seventh year of age and the
dominant variety was Burlat. In order to reduce scale population, late winter
treatment with mineral oil (Nitropol, 1.5%) was done on 25.02.2021 in phenophase
swelling buds. Infested twigs were sampled troughout the season. After sampling,
the abundance of scales, as well as their vitality, were monitored in laboratory using
binocular. San Jose scale develops three generation per year and overwinters as first
instar larvae on woody parts of the cherry. In the observed locality, all above-ground
parts of the plant were heavily infested. Feeding of such a high number of individuals
caused redness, yellowing and drying of the leaves as well as drying of thin twigs.
The symptoms on trunk and branches were manifested in the form of wounds from
which amber-colored resin is excreted. It darkens over time and the bark of the tree
cracks and dries. Damaged plants are physiologically weakened, do not have
sufficient nutrients for the formation of fertile buds, they are more susceptible to the
attacks of other pests and diseases, as well as to frosts. Since scale is easily
transmitted by plant material, strict phytosanitary control and use of healthy plant
material are the best preventive measures for controlling this pest. Late winter
treatment of cherry trees is necessary measure for controling this pest. During this
research, the use of mineral oil-based preparation has achieved good results, thus
reducing populations of C. perniciosa to a minimum.

AB - The aim of the research was to evaluate the different fertilization systems during the biennial review of the soil weed seed-bank. Sampling of soil by the ’’Square grill’’ method was carried out on the plots of the 50-year old crop rotation (corn, winter wheat, soybean) at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops Novi Sad (N 45° 19', E 19° 50'). Plots were used for testing where only mineral fertilizer in amount 50 kg ha-1 P and K and mineral N in amount 120 kg ha-1 was used each year (P1), mineral fertilizer in same quantities and manure in the amount of 40 t ha-1 every third year (P2) and a plot (P3) where fertilizer was not used for 50 years. It was sampled in the autumn of 2014, spring and autumn of 2015, so that it got real insight into the composition and size of the weed seed-bank in the plough layer (0-30 cm). A method of physical extraction of seeds was used whereby 500 ml of the soil sample was washed with a jet of water through a sieve of a different diameter and separate seeds were determined using the determination keys. After the harvest of maize in autumn 2014 it was determined that the number of weed seeds is the highest on plot P2 (22,275 seeds m-2), on plot P1 was 12,075 seeds m-2, while on the plot where it is not applied fertilizers (P3) was 11,700 seeds m-2. A similar relationship was in the spring of 2015. These method was served to conculded how fertilization affects the number of weed species, on the plots P1 and P2 dominated Amaranthus retroflexus, Chеnopodium album, Ch. hybridum, Veronica hederifoilia. In the non-fertilized variant of the species mentioned did not present a problem, the significant number of seeds were Ambrosia artemisiifolia, Ajuga chamaephytis, Stachys annua, Sorghum halepense, which certainly influences the selection of herbicides for the following period, is evident. In the autumn of 2015, after the harvest of wheat, the situation in P1 and P2 were 14,625 seeds m-2 and 23,700 seeds m-2. In non-fertilized treatment (P3) the number increased to 17,250 seeds m-2 and seed of those species which the method of assessment from the land samples of the previous year indicated that it would be a problem. Based on the results, it is concluded that the different fertilization systems affect the number and composition of the soil weed seed-bank.

AB - Knowledge of the structure and function of sensory system of aphids, as well as understanding of their behavior, enabled the development of different methods of aphid collection, flight monitoring and control. The first methods used for collecting aphids were the colored water traps, most commonly of yellow color. Methods based on olfactory perception in order to reduce the abundance of aphids in the field have been developed later. These methods are mainly based on sowing different plant species, such as border crops, trap crops and intercropping. Chemicals, such as pheromones and essential oils, have also found practical application.

AB - Phenolic compounds of 12 strawberry cultivars were profiled using spectrophotometry, spectrofluorometry, and high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, coupled with multivariate regression analysis. Total phenolic content, total anthocyanin content, and total antioxidant capacity (TPC, TACY, and TAC, respectively) and concentrations of individual phenolics were evaluated, and the multivariate statistic was employed to identify the most promising cultivars based on their phenolic content. According to the principal component analysis, TAC was strongly correlated with the TPC (0.81), pointing out its importance in overall antioxidant activity. 'Joly', 'Laetitia', and 'Asia' cultivars were distinguished from others as the richest in concerning identified anthocyanins, almost all flavonoids and phenolic acids. Multivariate curve resolution with alternating least squares indicated the presence of two main types of fluorophores assigned to anthocyanins and phenolics, in which emission spectral ratios also showed the highest values in the referred cultivars. These cultivars could be recommended to consumers in terms of the health functionality of fruit.

AB - Biological control is a rising trend in plant protection. Many natural enemies,
predators and parasitoids, are used as effective non-insecticide method to control
different pests, including soft scale insects (Coccidae), on grapevine. There are four
scale insects from Coccidae family registered on grapevine in Serbia. Among them,
Parthenolecanium corni Bouché and Pulvinaria vitis (L.) are considered
economically important. These species may cause physiological weakening of
grapevine, premature defoliation, reduction in yield and fruit quality and even
deterioration of whole plants. As data on predator species of soft scale insects in
vineyards in Serbia are scarce, as well as the fact that there is increasing interest in
using natural enemies to control pests in viticulture, the aim of this study was to
determine predator species of P. corni and P. vitis on grapevine in Serbia. The
research was conducted during 2018-2019, on grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) in
Jagodina, Neštin and Radmilovac where large scale colonies were registered.
Predatory larvae were collected from scale colonies in ten days intervals troughout
the vegetation period and were individually reared under laboratory conditions, in
order to prevent cannibalism. Identification was done according to Bienkowski
(2018) identification key. P. corni was registered in Neštin, while P. vitis was
registered in Jagodina and Radmilovac. Total of seven predator species were found
associated with both scale insects. In P. corni colonies, four species were registered:
Anthribus nebulosus (Forster) (Anthribidae), Coccinella septempunctata L.
(Coccinellidae), Chrysoperla carnea Steph. (Chrysopidae) and Sympherobius
elegans Steph. (Hemerobiidae). Four species of coccinellids were found in P. vitis
colonies: C. septempunctata L., Exochomus quadripustulatus (L.), Harmonia
axyridis (Pallas) and Hippodamia variegata (Goeze) (Coccinellidae). The most
abundant predator of both scale insect colonies was C. septempunctata. Records of
all species, except E. quadripustulatis, are first data about predators of P. corni and
P. vitis on grapevine in Serbia.

AB - During autumn 2018 and 2019, presence of numerous Chrysodeixis chalcites (Esper) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) larvae on cultivated and ornamental plants was recorded in Zemun area, both outdoors and indoors. Outdoors, larvae were registered on Solanum lycopersicum L., Capparis spinosa L., Amaryllis paradisicola Snijman, Hosta sp., Ipomea sp., Canna indica L., Convolvulus tricolor L., Achimenes erecta (Lam.) H. P. Fuchs and Pelargonium x domesticum. Indoors, larvae were registered on the following vegetables, Brassica oleracea L. and Capsicum annuum L., and on ornamental plants Kohleria eriantha (Benth.) Hanst, Pelargonium x domesticum and Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L. On infested plants, larvae mostly fed on leaves, rarely on flowers, causing perforation of the leaf surface and reduction of the photosynthetic area. In case of high infestation level, feeding of the larvae led to complete defoliation which resulted in decay of plants. Considering the fact that this particular species was fairly unknown to the public and had small populations until a few years ago, and due to the recent records of severe damages caused by larvae, it is necessary to point out the potential threat of this species represents in Serbia.
AB - Tokom jeseni 2018. i 2019. godine, na području Zemuna, na otvorenom polju i u zaštićenom prostoru, na većem broju gajenih i ukrasnih biljaka, utvrđeno je prisustvo brojnih gusenica Chrysodeixis chalcites (Esper) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Na otvorenom polju, od gajenih biljaka gusenice su naseljavale paradajz (Solanum lycopersicum L.), od začinskih, kapar (Capparis spinosa L.), a od ukrasnih, amarilis (Amaryllis paradisicola Snijman), hostu (Hosta sp.), ipomeu (Ipomea sp.), kanu (Canna indica L.), ladolež (Convolvulus tricolor L.), magični cvet (Achimenes erecta (Lam.) H. P. Fuchs) i muškatlu (Pelargonium x domesticum). Hanst.), muškatle i ukrasnog hibiskusa (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L.).

AB - The aim of this study was to investigate the bioaccessibility of pesticide residues in blueberries (com-mercial and sample from controlled field trial) from Serbia, involving the presence of a complex food matrix and to assess the potential risk to human health. The presence of nine active substances (azox-ystrobin, boscalid, fludioxonil, cyprodinil, pyrimethanil, pyridaben, pyriproxyfen, acetamiprid and thia-metoxam) in initial blueberry samples was determined in concentration range from 5.15 mu g/kg for thiametoxam to 187 mu g/kg for azoxystrobin. Clothianidin, metabolite of thiametoxam, was not detected in any blueberry sample. However, after in vitro digestion, the content of initially detected pesticides residues was significantly decreased or it was below limit of quantification resulting in the total bio-accessibility of about 15%. Azoxystrobin, pyrimethanil and fludioxonil was quantified in digestive juice at concentrations which were about 81%, 37% and 10% less than the inital concentration, respectively. The presence of food matrix during digestion of blueberries even more severely reduced concentration of pesticide residues (total bioaccessibility was about 7%) compared to digestion without the food matrix. Only azoxystrobin was quantified after digestion with food matrix in concentration of 27 mu g/kg in sample from controlled field trial and detected in two commercial samples but below the limit of quantification. Furthermore, chronic risk assessment indicated that risk is acceptable for the health of different human subpopulation groups. The current study on pesticides residues, most commonly applied on blueberries, provides for the first time an insight into their bioaccessibility under conditions that mimic physiological environment of human digestive tract.

AB - The aim of this study was to evaluate the thinning efficacy of metamitron applied either alone (single or double application) or in combination with 6-benzyladenine (BA) or naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) in young 'Gala' and 'Golden Delicious' apple trees. The experiment was carried out during the first three crop seasons, 2014, 2015, and 2016, at the commercial orchard located on the mountain Fruska Gora, Serbia. Application of chemical thinners was carried out at two fruit diameter stages (6-9 and 12-15 mm). The number of fruit and yield per tree, fruit size distribution, parameters of fruit ripeness, and return bloom were assessed. Single metamitron treatments were effective when the weather conditions were favourable on the day of application and 3 days after (minimum night temperature >10 degrees C, maximum daily temperature >20 degrees C) regardless of fruit diameter stages. A reduction in fruit number per tree was followed by an increase in mean fruit weight. Double metamitron application at lower concentration caused relatively stable thinning activity during the whole experimental period in both cultivars tested. Metamitron combined with either BA or NAA at standard rates significantly reduced the negative influence of low temperature on metamitron thinning activity in the first experimental year. These treatments slightly influenced overthinning in 'Gala' trees if applied when the air temperature was too high minimum night temperature >15 degrees C, maximum daily temperature >25 degrees C). Repeated metamitron treatment and treatments in which metamitron was combined with BA and NAA resulted in an increase in fruit size and share of large fruit in the total yield during the whole experimental period in both cultivars tested. A reduction in fruit number per tree affected by these treatments was followed by increasing flowering intensity in the subsequent year, with the exception of double metamitron application to 'Golden Delicious' trees in the last experimental year. Fruit maturity parameters were slightly different under the influence of metamitron treatments.

AB - Tribolium castaneumis one of the most economically important insects that damages stored products. The effects of several infested or uninfested raw feed materials (wheat bran, coarse wheat meal, corn feed flour), feed products (compound feed for pigs and for laying hens) and flour mixed with brewer's yeast on the food-searching behaviour ofT. castaneumadults were studied in a total of 48 combinations. Preference and olfactometer tests revealed that all the tested uninfested and intraspecific infested substrates were significantly more attractive toT. castaneumthan the control (represented by part of an arena or olfactometer arm without substrate). We determined that all infested substrates were 2-9 times more attractive than uninfested in the preference test, while in the olfactometer test, they were 3-8 times more attractive. In comparing the attractiveness of the infested and uninfested substrates, in both tests wheat bran was found to be the most attractive substrate toT. castaneumadults and coarse wheat meal the least. The results of the present study contribute to our knowledge of how raw feed materials and products influence the behaviour ofT. castaneumand their susceptibility to infestation, and indicate the possible utilization of wheat bran in monitoring processes ofT. castaneumin pest management programmes.

AB - Longidorus barsii sp. n., from Mt Tara in the Balkan Peninsula, is described and characterised by using a polyphasic approach. The species has numerous males. The female body is 5-7 mm long, rather stout and resembles a large Xiphinema. The lip region is wide, with rounded sides continuous with the neck, frontally flattened and depressed around the oral aperture, amphids are pouch-like and distinctly bi-lobed and the odontostyle is moderately long. The nuclei of the pharyngeal glands are in the normal position, the dorsal nucleus located somewhat posterior to anterior third of bulb. The uteri are long, the distal inner epithelium densely covered with papilla-like outgrowths. The tail is rounded, bluntly conoid and very short. Alpha-numerical identification codes: A4/5, B45, C3, D3, E2, F3, G 1(2), H1, I2, J1, K67. The morphologically most similar species are L. kheirii, L. polyae and L. profundorum. Additional observations are provided on the anterior body region and genital organs in L. barsii sp. n., L. piceicola, L. silvae, and L. uroshis. Selected features are discussed from the taxonomic and functional points of view. The D2-D3 expansion domains of the 28S rRNA gene and the ITS region of L. barsii sp. n. were amplified and sequenced. Phylogenetic analysis using the D2-D3 expansion domains of the 28S rRNA gene revealed close evolutionary relationships with L. polyae, L. athesinus and three unidentified Longidorus spp.

AB - Bacterial stalk soft rot have been repeatedly observed on maize plants in several commercial fields in northern part of Serbia in the period of 1990 to 2014. The occurrence of the disease corresponded with warm weather and increased humidity. Etiological studies of the diseased tissue constantly resulted in isolation of pectolytic bacterial strains. In order to identify the isolated bacteria, twenty-three strains were characterized by morphological, physiolcal, biochemical, and molecular assays. Pathogenicity of the strains was confirmed by Koch's postulates on 1-week-old maize seedlings. The strains were Gram and oxidase-negative, non-fluorescent, pectolytic, facultative anaerobic and caused hypersensitive response (HR) in tobacco leaves. They produced catalase and lecithinase, but did not produce oxidase and arginine dehydrolase. All strains reduced nitrate and grew at 37 degrees C, while variable growth was observed in medium containing 5% NaCl. Phenotypic tests and amplification of the specific 420-bp fragment in PCR assay showed that the strains belong to genus Dickeya. Using ERIC-PCR analysis seven different genetic profiles were obtained, suggesting the presence of genetic diversity in the population of this pathogen in Serbia. Additionally, phylogenetic analysis based on the recA gene sequence analysis indicated that the strains isolated from soft rotted maize belong to Dickeya zeae, leading to the conclusion that this bacterium was the causal agent of stalk soft rot of maize in Serbia.

AB - Over the past several decades, necrotic spots, lesions and blight symptoms have been observed on onion leaves in several locations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where the crop is grown intensively. The type of symptoms indicated a possible infection with Botrytis squamosa, a widespread pathogen of onion. As symptoms of leaf spots and necrotic lesions can also be caused by some other biotic and abiotic factors, our research focused on identifying the causal agent of the observed symptoms. The pathogen was isolated from diseased tissue using standard phytopathological procedure and identified based on pathogenic and morphological features. Identification was confirmed by amplification and sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of ribosomal DNA (rDNA). The influence of temperature and growth medium on mycelial growth rate of the isolates was also studied.
Identifikacija je potvrđena amplifikacijom i sekvenciranjem ITS rDNA genomnog regiona. Takođe, proučen je uticaj temperature i hranljive podloge na porast izolata.

AB - During September 2019, for the first time in Serbia, American grape leaf miner (Phyllocnistis vitegenella, Clemens, 1859) has been recorded on grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.), in Neštin area. This species originates from North America. It has been introduced to Europe in 1995, when it was firstly recorded in Italy. After that it spread into a couple of European countries. The damages are caused by larvae which feed on the leaf tissue and form snake shaped mines. This causes the reduction of assimilation area. As the development finishes, larva forms a pupa at the end of the mine, from which an adult eclodes. Phyllocnistis vitegenella is a new species to the fauna of Serbia.

AB - This paper presents data on the damage caused by grass snails (Vallonidae) in Serbia. In the last two decades, the species Vallonia excentrica Sterki 1893 and V. pulchella (O.F.Müller 1774) have been registered several times on various types of ornamental plants in Serbia, but the appropriate damage assessment hasn't been done. The recent damage to cut flowers in a greenhouses, for the fi rst time, enabled an objective examination of the causes and extent of damage, as well as the origin of indoor grass snails. Implemented control measures in the greenhoses have been analyzed.

Implemented control measures in the greenhoses have been analyzed., U radu su prikazani podaci o štetnosti puževa trava (Vallonidae) u Srbiji.

AB - The application of minimal doses of herbicides is very popular due to concerns about the negative impacts of herbicides on the environment and public health. Studies were conducted to estimate the possibility of using quick and non- destructive methods to investigate Chenopodium album L. and Abutilon theophrasti Medik. response to mesotrione. The studies were conducted in a controlled environment to determine the response of C. album and A. theophrasti to mesotrione using dose-response curves created based on plant dry weight, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters and chlorophyll content. The obtained effective dose values showed that the studied weeds were susceptible to reduced doses of mesotrione. ED95 values estimated for both species for dry weight and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were lower than the recommended dose rate (120 g a.i. ha(-1)), with less than 85 g a.i. ha(-1) needed to achieve a reduction of 95%, compared with untreated plants, while ED95 value (A. theophrasti: 182 g a.i. ha(-1) and C. album: 180 g a.i. ha(-1)) for chlorophyll content for both species was above the recommended dose rates. Consequently, dry weight and the chlorophyll fluorescence parameters are suitable for estimating the plant response to mesotrione, while chlorophyll content is not.

AB - The physiological and anatomical impact of field dodder (Cuscuta campestris Yunck.) on alfalfa and sugar beet was examined under controlled conditions. The following parameters were checked: physiological content of pigments (chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and carotenoids) and mineral nutrients: nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and percent of organic and mineral nutrients; and anatomical thickness of the epidermis and cortex, diameter of the stem and central cylinder of alfalfa plants, diameter of tracheids and phloem cells, area of xylem and phloem, and hydraulic conductance of petiole bundles in petiole vascular bundles of sugar beet plants. Leaf parameters were also measured on both host plants: thickness of upper and underside leaf epidermis, thickness of palisade, spongy and mesophyll tissue, and diameter of vascular bundle cells. Pigments content and anatomical parameters were measured 7,14, 21, 28, 35, and 42 d after infestation (DAI), while mineral nutrient contents were determined 20 and 40 DAI. Field dodder caused a significant reduction in pigments content in infested alfalfa (15%-68%) and sugar beet plants (1%-54%). The results obtained in this study confirmed that this parasitic flowering plant has a strong effect on most anatomical parameters of the stem and leaf of alfalfa and leaf and petiole of sugar beet. Also, it was revealed that field dodder increased the contents of N, P2O5, K2O, and organic nutrients in infested alfalfa plants, while infested sugar beet plants had higher contents of N and organic nutrients compared with non-infested plants.

AB - Genetic and morphological interpopulation variability of weed species is often responsible for variable responses to herbicides. As weedy sunflower, an invasive form of Helianthus annuus L., possesses high morphological and genetic variability, very different responses of its populations to herbicides can be expected. This species is one of the dominant weed species in row crops, including maize, in many European countries in which nicosulfuron is intensively used for weed control. There are little available data about the response of this sunflower form to nicosulfuron or of the interpopulation variability of its response to other herbicides. The responses of three weedy sunflower populations to nicosulfuron were studied in field dose-response experiments, and acetolactate synthase (ALS) enzyme activity at different herbicide concentrations was determined in vitro. Interpopulation variability in the response to nicosulfuron was confirmed. Populations WS2 and WS3 were more that 20-fold and 30-fold less susceptible to nicosulfuron, respectively, than population WS1, based on fresh weight, whereas the differences were not so prominent based on other parameters, including plant height, leaf area and ALS activity, and ranged from 2 to 12-fold.
