AB - Insect infestations are considered one of the major problems causing enormous economic losses in stored grains. Laboratory bioassays were performed to establish the mortality induced by the commercially available Beauveria bassiana strain ATCC74040 (formulated product: Naturalis®) and by Metarhizium anisopliae strain CIST8 against four stored products pests. Adults of four grain and legume pest species (Cathartus quadricollis, Callosobruchus maculatus, Sitophilus granarius, and Oryzaephilus surinamensis) were exposed in laboratory assays to three different concentrations (103, 105 and 107/mL) of each entomopathogenic fungal strain. For each insect species, fungal strain and concentration, the mortality was recorded daily over a period of 7 days. Mean survival time and final cumulative mortality were determined, and 7-day mortality curves were established. A significant effect of insect species, fungal strain, and conidial concentration was observed on the 7-day mortality curves and the final cumulative mortality. Also, the mean survival time varied significantly with the conidial concentration. In addition, a significant interaction between insect species and fungal strain was recorded for all three assessed parameters. In general, at all tested concentrations, B. bassiana strain ATCC 74040 caused higher mortality than M. anispliae strain CIST8 in all four insect species. Our results suggest that entomopathogenic fungi could be effectively used as part of an integrated pest management program for the control of legumes and grain pests. © 2022 CREA-DC, Research Centre for Plant Protection and Certification. AB - Virulence of commercial strains of entomopathogenic nematode (EPN) Steinernema carpocapsae (Weiser), Steinernema feltiae Filipjev and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora Poinar (Rhabditida: Steinernematidae, Heterorhabditidae), were tested on young females of Pulvinaria hydrangeae Steinweden, Partenolecanium corni (Bouché) and Coccus pseudomagnoliarum (Kuwana) (Hemiptera, Coccidae) and a native strain of H. bacteriophora was tested on citricola scale, C. pseudomagnoliarum. The laboratory tests were carried out in small plastic Petri dishes with infective juveniles (IJ) applied on filter paper covering the bottom. Results showed that all EPN tested were virulent to all three soft scale insect species. Recorded mortality of insects at the highest concentration of approximately 50 IJ per cm2 exceeded 64% in all combinations of nematode and scale species tested. Within the same nematode concentration, scales’ mortality of 90% and above was recorded for P. corni with all nematode species, P. hydrangeae with S. carpocapsae (Nemastar) and C. pseudomagnoliarum with native H. bacteriophora strain. All scale species were good hosts for all nematode species. This is the first report of EPNs to parasitize soft scale insects and one of the few among Coccoidea. The level of parasitism recorded is promising for potential use in management of scale insects.

AB - Stelidota geminata (Say) (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae), also known as strawberry sap beetle is considered to be serious pest of strawberry worldwide. All stages of this pest feed on ripe fruitswhich makes its control with chemical insecticides extremely difficult. This work was testing susceptibility of last instar larvae of S. geminata to three, among commercially the most commonly used species of entomopathogenic nematodes Heterorhabditis bacteriophora, Steinernema carpocapsae and Steinernema feltiae (Rhabditida: Heterorhabditidae and Steinernematidae), including two native strains. The present work was carried out through two types of the experiments. First experiment was in plastic Petri dishes with the nematodes applied on filter paper. Second one, in attempt to approach to more natural conditions, effect of the entomopathogenic nematodes on insect’s mortality was tested in containers filled with sand. Mortality of S. geminata larvae in Petri dishes in highest nematode concentrations of about 100 infective juveniles per cm2 was 90%, 82% and 70% for commercial strains of S. carpocapsae, H. bacteriophora and S. feltiae and 76% and 64% for H. bacteriophora and S. feltiae native populations. In containers with sand mortality was higher than in Petri dishes and the highest recorded insect mortality with about 50 nematodes per cm2 was 99.5%, 89%, 75.5%, 69% and 66% with commercial strains S. feltiae, S. carpocapsae and H. bacteriophora, and native strains H. bacteriophora and S. feltiae, respectively.

AB - This paper presents data on the damage caused by grass snails (Vallonidae) in Serbia. In the last two decades, the species Vallonia excentrica Sterki 1893 and V. pulchella (O.F.Müller 1774) have been registered several times on various types of ornamental plants in Serbia, but the appropriate damage assessment hasn't been done. The recent damage to cut flowers in a greenhouses, for the fi rst time, enabled an objective examination of the causes and extent of damage, as well as the origin of indoor grass snails. Implemented control measures in the greenhoses have been analyzed.

AB - Annual decline rates of potato cyst nematode (PCN) populations have been extensively studied. They vary considerably due to many factors, including potato cultivar, initial PCN density and climatic factors. Information is needed on PCN decline in potato fields in the specific conditions of Western Serbia, which is the centre for most of the local potato production, especially seed potato. We investigated the decline of Globodera rostochiensis over 1 or 2 years under the influence of PCN-resistant potato cv. Agria in the field and microplots. Decline was compared with fallow in Ponikve, near the original record of G. rostochiensis. Population decline in the field after cv. Agria was approximately 80%. In two parts of the field where potato cv. Agria was cropped once or twice with fallow before and after, the viable PCN population declined over 9 years to about 1% of initial Pi values. In a third part of the field, left fallow for 9 years, 15% of the initial population was still viable, after an annual decline rate of 9.4%. The influence of volunteer potatoes on maintaining PCN populations was also examined. In the microplots, with a higher density of volunteers compared to the field, PCN decline under resistant potato cv. Agria was 70%. At crop harvest a new generation was recorded, suggesting its possible formation on susceptible volunteer potato. The full cysts represented 1% of all cysts examined and 13% of total second-stage juveniles found in the samples. The information will be useful for improvement of management procedures.
