AB - Progeny numbers and life parameters of Tribolium castaneum reared on a range of different animal feeds which varied in their protein-carbohydrate ratios (corn starch; corn feed flour; wheat bran; soybean meal; corn gluten; soy protein concentrate and soy protein isolate), four initial (population) densities (1, 2, 5 and 10 insect pairs) were evaluated. Adult insects were kept for seven days on a range of different diets to feed and oviposit before they were removed. After removing the adults, the emerging progeny were examined. The study found T. castaneum offspring could not develop on a carbohydrate-rich diet (corn starch) and on protein-rich diets (corn gluten, soy protein concentrate and soy protein isolate). Soy isolate showed a high, possibly insecticidal effect on parents. The fastest total development (egg to adult) (23.25–23.88 days, depending on the initial density), the highest offspring number (111.63–324.13) and the highest offspring body mass (1.38–1.73 mg) were recorded in wheat bran, while the slowest egg to adult development (35.13–37.88 days), the lowest offspring number (25–29) and the lowest offspring mass (1.04–1.48 mg) were recorded in soybean meal. The higher initial densities caused the eclosion period to be prolonged, reductions in female productivity and in offspring body mass on all diets. Initial density interacted differently with diet type in terms of offspring number, so as the density rose, the number of offspring in wheat bran and corn feed flour increased, while in soybean meal it remained low at all initial densities. This research gives us a better insight into the development of T. castaneum in animal feed that can help us to improve existing pest management in a way of finding a better solution to store products based on their susceptibility to this storage pest.

AB - The effects of brewer's yeast and wheat patent flour on Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) life parameters at different population densities (1, 2, 5 and 10 pairs) were examined. A standard diet (95% wheat flour + 5% brewer's yeast) was used as control. The effect was examined on the duration of egg, larval and pupal stages, total development cycle, first adult emergence, eclosion period, the total number of offspring, number of offspring per female and body weight of adult offspring. For each diet type and population density, adults were allowed to feed and oviposit for 7 days before removal from diets. A longer larval stage was recorded in brewer's yeast (between 23.88 and 26.25 days, depending on population density) and patent flour (17.63–23 days) compared to the standard diet (12.88 and 13.38 days). The longest eclosion period was recorded in patent flour (19–21.23 days), which was the only diet unaffected by population density. In the brewer's yeast and standard diet, the period of eclosion was prolonged with the increase in population density. The lowest number of progeny was recorded in patent flour (44.29–49.63 insects), followed by brewer's yeast (22.86–177 insects), while the highest number of progeny (107.25–313.38 insects) was recorded in the standard diet. Population density did not affect the total number of progeny in patent flour, which remained low at all densities, while in the brewer's yeast and standard diet the rise in population densities caused a rise in progeny numbers. The type of diet did not affect the body weight of adult progeny: the highest body mass of progeny was recorded at the lowest population density and the lowest mass at the highest. This study provides insight into poorly researched development cycle and reproductive strategies of T. castaneum on brewer's yeast and patent flour, which are important stored products.

AB - Vegetables play an important role in human nutrition and their importance in diet is determined by its chemical composition. Numerous studies indicate a high degree of contamination of soil and plants produced in certain agro-ecological conditions, especially near urban and industrial areas. Accordingly, toxic and potentially toxic elements (aluminum, chromium, copper, manganese, nickel, lead and zinc) were quantified in edible parts of four vegetable species (potato, cabbage, carrot and broccoli) by means of inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectrometry (ICP–OES). In addition, health risk assessment was done and expressed through estimated weekly intake of elements (EWI) and hazard quotient (HQ). Samples of each species originating from different localities were collected from three green markets in the city of Belgrade (Serbia). The content of studied elements ranged from 1.32 to 4.00, 0.31 to 5.77, 3.50 to 23.11, 1.82 to 11.17 and 2.11 to 10.62 mg/kg for aluminum, cooper, manganese, nickel and zinc, respectively. Chromium was detected in carrot sample (1.76 mg/kg), whereas concentration of lead in two samples of broccoli exceeded the maximum allowed concentration (>0.3 mg/kg) set by the national regulations. The average estimated weekly intakes for Al, Cu, and Zn were within the safe limits set by FAO/WHO, while for Ni and Pb in some vegetables were considerably higher than proposed values. In respect to the obtained results, a great weekly health risk was indicated for chromium, nickel and lead with the highest HQ values: 2.44, 10.32 and 2.02, respectively. The results of the study impose the necessity for continuous monitoring of harmful elements content in individual vegetable crops as well as strict regulative guide-lines in order to diminish possibility of contamination.

AB - The investigation was performed on two groups of primiparous and multiparous healthy dewormed Alpine dairy goats (25 each) during peripartal period. Blood samples were collected (jugular venipuncture) 10-15 days before and 10-15 and 30 days after the parturition into BD SST-II Advance (3.5 mL) and BD NaF 3.0 mg Na2EDTA 6.0 mg (2 mL) vacutainers, cooled and centrifuged (1500 r/min, 15 minutes and ≤1300 r/min, 10 minutes, respectively). Glucose, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA) concentrations in blood sera were determined using A15 automatic spectrophotometric analyzer (Biosystem, Spain). Simultaneously, body condition scoring (BCS) was performed by Villaquiran et al. (2007) method. The obtained data were analyzed by IBM SPSS statistics 21. The glucose concentration inclined to increase in both groups. Differences between glucose levels were significant (P<0.05) 15 days before and 15 days after, as well as 15 and 30 days after the parturition, and very significant (P<0.01) 15 days before and 30 days after the parturition. The BHBA blood levels significantly differed 15 days before and 30 days after and 15 and 30 days after the parturition (P<0.05). BHBA concentration peaked at week 2 postpartum, following the increase of NEFA, providing the substrate for BHBA synthesis. NEFA levels significantly (P<0.05) differed 15 days before and 15 days after the parturition. Goats’ BCS ranged from 2 to 4 and significantly depended on glucose (r=0.392; P<0.05) and BHBA (r=0.317; P<0.05) level 15 days before parturition. BCS 30 days postpartum very significantly depended on the glucose level (r=0.450; P<0.01), significantly higher than the concentration of BHBA (r=0.351; P<0.05) and NEFA concentration (r=-0.304; P<0.05). BCS 15 days before parturition did not depend on the NEFA concentration. Fifteen days after the parturition BCS did not statistically depend on the observed indicators. Obtained data suggest that knowledge of BCS and energy indicators levels may be very useful in research and practice in order to appreciate energy metabolism of pregnant and lactating dairy ruminants, particularly dairy goats. These data are poorly documented for goats, but they can reveal early pathological metabolic changes in transiting female goat organism, enabling successful prophylactic, as well as, therapeutic intervention.

AB - The term sustainable development is used in many areas and spheres of life and is becoming a modern phenomenon determining the direction of progress of every society. Sustainable development implies continuous economic development with respect to environmental principles and focuses on overcoming conflicts between economy and ecology. The aim of this paper is to evaluate sustainable development management in EU countries through selected indicators characterizing sustainable development and its core dimensions. We present the results of an evaluation of the sustainable development of EU countries using cluster analysis. Countries that are similar in terms of sustainability are identified by cluster analysis. Four clusters were separated, the affiliation of each country to a particular cluster was determined, and the characteristics of each cluster were defined. The goal of sustainability management is to create an adequate approach to development of the economic and environmental performance, and therefore achieve sustainability. The achievements of most developed countries should be an incentive for those that are at a lower level of development. In addition, this research provides insight into some specific goals of sustainable development where some countries are lagging behind. This could be the basis for directing efforts in specific areas of sustainable development to improve their own position in such an important global issue.

AB - True truffles (Tuber sp.) that establish ectomycorrhizal symbiosis (ECM) with trees in the Mediterranean and temporal regions have species specific abilities to assimilate soil born elements. Suitable habitats are usually inhabited by few truffle species, while distinguishing their symbiotic potentials appeared very difficult. Two species that commonly inhabit riparian forests in Serbia are the most prized one, Tuber magnatumPico (Piedmont white truffle) and not so highly valued Tuber brumaleVitt. In order to assess potential differences between their assimilation and accumulation abilities, the differences between contents of elements that may be the subjects of the symbiotic trade between the host plant and fungi were evaluated in accumulation target (ascocarps) and their source (the soil). Essential (K, Na, Ca, Mg, Fe, P, S, and Zn) and essential trace elements (Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, and Se) in truffles and soil samples were determined by means of inductively coupled plasma with optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Their concentrations (mg/kg) in ascocarps were in the range from 1.364 +/- 0.591 (Cr) to 10760.862 +/- 16.058 (K), while in soil ranged from 23.035 +/- 0.010 (Cr) to 20809.300 +/- 122.934 (Fe). Element accumulation potential (bioaccumulation factor) was calculated in the system truffle/soil. The statistical approaches were used for establishing the differences, while the possible differentiation between symbiotic potentials of two mycelia in the defined soil conditions was discussed.

AB - The territory of the Republic of Serbia is highly heterogeneous due to large differences in climatic, geo-morphological and socio-economic factors. In Serbia, there are big regional differences, and addressing the problem of balanced regional development and its financing is the question that will be actualized with the opening of negotiations for accession to the European Union. The objective of this paper is to present the methodology for the classification of administration districts of the Republic of Serbia based on their selected characteristics in order to perceive the similarities between regions in a way to provide the basis for the regional development policy. The classification of 25 Serbian districts was performed using the factor and cluster analysis, based on the eighteen selected socioeconomic, demographic and agricultural indicators. The factor analysis resulted in the extraction of factors which represent the main dimensions of the achieved development. The cluster analysis was performed based on these dimensions. The resulting clusters are homogenous and consist of districts with similar characteristics. The paper demonstrates that applying of appropriate statistical methods can provide an analytical tool for the separation of districts into groups with similar characteristics, which represent more appropriate framework for the creation and implementation of the regional development policy measures.

AB - Six Sigma concept is presented in literature as a technique and a philosophy stemming from the desire to eliminate waste and improve performances as much as technically possible. The idea of Six Sigma is to reduce the number of defects to the lowest possible level, to reduce costs and production time, and to increase productivity and improve business results. The goal of the Six Sigma principles is to achieve 'perfection' with no more than 3.4 defects, errors or omissions per million opportunities. Therefore, this paper provides a brief description of statistical groundings underlying the Six Sigma methodology.

AB - The work represents a continuation of previous research, where development level of small and medium entrepreneurship in agribusiness in Serbia was determined. The initial results show that the AP Vojvodina is the most developed part of Serbia when it comes to small and medium entrepreneurship in agribusiness. Previous research was carried out in order to determine intraregional development of this sector in AP Vojvodina, and then, using cluster analysis, grouping municipalities of AP Vojvodina according to development level SMEs in agribusiness was performed. Based on applied cluster analysis, Vojvodina municipalities are classified in five clusters (groups), and two other municipalities are left outside the cluster. The aim of this study is to determine to what extent each of the observed performance indicators, as well as all together, contribute to the separation of the observed groups of Vojvodina municipalities in separate clusters, based on the coefficient of separation power (separability coefficient). The determined values of separability coefficients indicate a very good separation of clusters in AP Vojvodina, which is the result of both an adequate choice of business indicators, as well as adequate separation of Vojvodina municipalities into clusters.
AB - Rad predstavlja nastavak istraživanja koje smo ranije sproveli i utvrdili nivo razvijenosti malog i srednjeg preduzetništva u oblasti agrobiznisa u Republici Srbiji.

AB - Systematic and continuous process of measuring and comparing business results of companies regarding to business results of leaders, in order to obtain information that will help the company to take action to improve its performance, is in a function of improving business operations. Accordingly, the first objective of this paper is, based on the coefficient of separability, to determine which indicators of business conditions and business results have the greatest impact on differences in the business operations of the observed SMEs operating in the food industry. The second objective of this work is to make the ranking of companies based on the business conditions and business results using discriminant analysis (I-distance), and then, to determine the overall rank of companies using general ranking coefficient (Ker). The results show that companies are significantly separated according to business results rather than to business conditions, and in addition, the business results also had a crucial impact on the overall rank of each company.

AB - The analysis of the production capacities of family farms holds an important place in an effort to perceive the economic and social factors which are important for their development. The agriculture of the Republic of Serbia and the agricultures of the countries in the region have a similar trait consisted in the participation of a large number of small estate farms. The ownership structure of family farms is one of the key factors of agricultural business efficiency. In the conditions of small-estate ownership structure, small farm area is a limiting factor in the application of contemporary agrotechnical measures. Apart from crop production, livestock fund has also had negative results per hectare of used area in the process of transition in the Republic of Serbia. It is reflected on the low level of agricultural productivity, as well as on the negative financial results of the farms. The paper provides a comparison between the family farms production capacities and the EU-28 countries, in order to be able to take necessary and timely measures and to reform and structurally adjust the agrarian sector to the demands of the EU.

AB - Agricultural production is very diverse and gives the great opportunities for various activities of small and medium enterprises. There is a great competition for placement of agricultural and food products, on both, domestic and international food markets. In a situation where there is a hyper production of agricultural products in the European market, the export of agricultural and food products is possible only if it offers organic products, for which there is a great demand. Organic production in Serbia is more popular and economically more important. Thanks to potentials that are reflected primarily in the fragmented property and land that is not contaminated with harmful substances, this type of agriculture can contribute significantly to development of rural areas and agriculture in general. Therefore, organic farming is set as one of the priorities for development of agriculture, and an integral part of the strategy for rural and agricultural development in the Republic of Serbia. Development level of organic production in Serbia is low, and the reasons are: a low level of environmental awareness, lack of state support to the agricultural sector, decline in living standards of the population, and therefore the reduced purchasing power. Organic products are becoming increasingly important goods in world terms, and there is a growing participation of these products in global trade flows. It is evident that the presence of organic food in the growing number of consumers around the world is not just a fashion fad, but the constant striving to consume better quality products, and thus contribute to the preservation of the environment and our health. These products represent a great opportunity for the promotion of small and medium enterprises in domestic and especially in foreign markets.

AB - Aims: The selection of cv. Merlot clones performed in the Grocka winegrowing region, Republic of Serbia, and the study of agrobiological and technological traits of three selected clones and Merlot standard. Methods and results: The selection of clones was done using the method of individual clone selection in four phases over 15-20 years (Cindric, 2003). O.I.V. methods were used in determining the most important agrobiological and economic-technological traits of grapes. The results of studied traits of grape and wine suggest that the quality of the clones surpassed the quality of the standard. Although the highest values for most of the studied traits were obtained for clone 025, there was no statistically significant difference between the clones. Indeed, the significant distinction between the clones was obtained for total polyphenol content (TPC) and total anthocyanin content (TAC) in wines : the wine of clone 025 had the highest TPC and TAC values. According to the tasting scores, wines of the clones may be classified as quality wines with geographical indications. Conclusion: The selected clones were characterised by good quality grapes and wines. Improved viticultural parameters, versus the mother vine, indicate the need for further research work on the chemistry of both grapes and wines, aiming to better understand the characteristics of the selected clones and their market potential. Significance and impact of the study: The development of new clones (namely 022, 025 and 029) of better quality than the mother vine will, in the long term, lead to the introduction of the best clone(s) in viticultural practices and production. Until today, the clonal selection of Merlot has not been done in the Republic of Serbia and there are no recognised clones.

AB - The most important aspect of any business is efficiency. The goal is to achieve a greater output results using less inputs, i.e. to maximize the use of available inputs. Numerous mathematical and statistical procedures, such as DEA technique (Data Envelopment Analysis), take an important place in the process of the effective management of the company and its business activities. This paper illustrated the application of DEA technique in assessing the business efficiency of SMEs in agribusiness in Vojvodina Measuring the efficiency of business operations of SMEs is based on the values of the following indicators: fixed assets, working capital, number of companies, number of employees, total income, profit and loss. The data used to calculate the values of indicators of business efficiency were obtained from the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia, based on the annual accounts of SMEs in agribusiness for four-year average (2008-2011). The aim of this paper is statistical assessment of business efficiency of SMEs in agribusiness using DEA technique, and then, based on the results obtained, to perform the ranking of Vojvodina municipalities in which observed SMEs were located, and finally, based on 4 models, to show sensitivity of DEA technique compared to different combination of input / output indicators, so therefore, caution is needed when this method is used. If the combination of parameters in the model is better, the results are more realistic, since if a key parameter is omitted, wrong decisions could be made.
Brojne matematičko-statističke procedure, poput tehnike DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) analize, zauzimaju značajno mesto u procesu merenja efikasnog upravljanja preduzećima i njegovim aktivnostima.

AB - Trail with sugar beet was set up during three years. Yield parameters were analyzed on five different origins of sugar beet varieties. Variety had a statistically significant affect on the yield sugar beet. The average yield for all tested varieties was 54.25 t ha-1. The highest average yield was achieved by varieties Chiara, 72.58 t ha-1, and Otis, 64.55 t ha-1 the variety Severina the lowest, 36.76 t ha-1. The variety Severina had the highest average crystal sugar content, 16.65%. Crystalline sugar yield, as the most important indicator of sugar beet yield, statistically significantly depended on the variety. Quality, namely technological root value largely depends of variety. Coarseness of the root was in inverse proportion to the content of sugar.

Regional aspect of agribusiness SMEs development in Serbia: Opportunity to reduce unemployment

AB - Changes of the political and economic concept initiated during the 1980s and still ongoing have significantly altered the strategy of agribusiness development. The direction has switched from the development of the agro-industrial complex that is focused on socialization of agriculture and creation of large corporate business systems towards a completely opposite concept, which implies privatization and development of small and medium enterprises. Current state of small and medium size agricultural entrepreneurship in Serbia is far below its potential and below satisfactory. Underused economic potential of agriculture is a great opportunity for the development of both SMEs and the agribusiness. The ranking of districts based on the prominence level of examined parameters will enable a formation of related groups and a determination of similarities or differences in the observed regions. In this study, we used cluster analysis to determine how the districts in Serbia are grouped according to development level of small and medium agribusiness enterprises in order to obtain insight into the current state of regional development of this sector, as well as into the possibility for developing the least developed regions in Serbia. Cluster analysis yielded five homogeneous groups, whereby each cluster has its own special characteristics in terms of prominence of certain observed indicators.

AB - The paper represents continued research by the group of authors (Maletić et al., 2011, 2012) conducted on the same data with the objective to apply new statistical methodologies to measuring entities' business efficiency and their ranking. For these purposes the distance based analysis (DBA method) was applied in order to estimate the agribusiness efficiency of SMEs in Vojvodina. Ranking of municipalities was first conducted based on Ivanovic distance, separately for input and output indicators, which were then normalized by L metrics. The final estimation of SMEs' business efficiency and the ranking of municipalities were determined by dividing the obtained normalized values. A comparative analysis of the results of the two applied methodologies (Ivanovic distance and DBA) showed significant discrepancies, i.e. that they produce inconsistent results. Although statistical indicators indicated relatively close relationship between the resulting ranks, further research showed that the deviations are significant. Therefore, it was concluded that the choice between the two methods depends only on the decision-makers and the research objectives.

AB - To successfully investigate slaughter characteristics of fattening pigs fed in different ways, this experiment was carried out on Experimental Farm of the Institute for Animal Husbandry, Belgrade-Zemun. Investigation of correlation between slaughter traits of pigs fed with different additives in their nutrition was done by factorial analysis. Slaughter characteristics in three groups of fattening pigs fed in different ways were observed. The first group (variant 1) consisted of fatteners fed diets without any special additives. The second group (variant 2) consisted of pigs fed diets containing enzyme Rovabio, and the third group (variant 3) probiotic Lacture Microbond. This study was aimed at coming to conclusion based on the results of factorial analysis of the observed traits to the greatest extent which determined slaughter traits of pigs fed diets containing different additives. The results obtained in general, that is, the structure of separated factors showed that different slaughter characteristics are realized with different nutrition.

AB - Current state of small and medium-sized enterprises in agribusiness in Republic of Serbia is beneath possible and satisfied level. Underuse of economic potential of agriculture is a great opportunity for development of SMEs on the one side, and for development of agribusiness on the other. Cluster analysis is a method used to determine how the municipalities in the Republic of Serbia are grouped according to the level of development of small and medium size enterprises in agribusinesses. Also, in this way we get insight into current condition of regional development of this sector, as well as possibility for development of least developed municipalities in Serbia. At the end, nine homogeneous groups of municipalities were formed, and in addition, each cluster has its own special characteristics in terms of the intensity of some of the observed indicators.

AB - Inclusion of rural population into social trends and development processes is of key importance for Serbia, considering that rural regions make 85% of its territory, participating in the gross national product with 41%, and rural population makes 42% of total population. Inclusion of rural population is important at the same time from the perspective of quality of life, realization of rights and development of the potential of rural population, as well as from the aspect of sustainable development of rural communities. Rural labour market in Serbia was devastated during transition, which as a consequence had dislocation of surpluses of industrial labour into sector of agriculture and increase of hidden unemployment and poverty on holdings. Therefore, in this paper, some of the facts which could considerably mitigate current poverty situation in Serbia are presented. .

AB - In this paper, the development level of field crop production in municipalities of AP Vojvodina was observed, in the period from 1989 to 2008, through indicators of presence of harvested areas, total production and production per ha of main field crop cultures: wheat, corn, sugar beat, sun flower, clover and alfalfa. The tendency of change of observed traits of main field crop cultures was monitored. Ranking of the municipalities of AP Vojvodina is not uniform based on presence of observed field crop cultures. Therefore, Spearman correlation coefficient indicates medium, but statistically very significant level of compliance of formed rankings based on individual field crop cultures. Statistical significance was not demonstrated only in the case of presence of surfaces under sugar beat, clover and alfalfa, as well as sunflower and clover. Based on the test of the independence of the rankings, on the territory of the municipalities of AP Vojvodina, it was recorded that investigated field crop productions were mutually independent. Considering that the level of development of the municipalities of AP Vojvodina was analyzed through several indicators of field crop production for determination of the synthetic ranking which would show which of the municipalities is most developed in regard to observed field crop productions, Idistance was used in the paper.

AB - Development of small and medium enterprises (SME) represents primary goal of every modern economy. It is complex challenge which includes great number of directly concerned parties in every sector of the state and economy. SME stimulate private ownership and entrepreneurship. Their characteristic is that they are flexible and can easily adjust to changes in supply and demand on the market. At the same time they open possibilities for increase of employment, promote diversification of economical activities, support sustainable growth and give significant contribution to export, trade and increase the competitiveness of the entire economy. Importance of SME for economy is undisputable. All research show that globally, more than 90% of all business activities are realized by SME. SMEs employ two thirds of total labor of European Union. Approaching to European Union presumes harmonization of the systematic environment and improvement of the climate of entrepreneurship, private initiative, development of SME. This determination has strongpoint in current world processes that prefer the development of SME, utilizing their profit efficiency and established advantages relating to the adaptability of small business to dynamic changes in economy. Problem of Human resources management is very sensitive issue in SMEs. Namely, in big companies there are entire teams of agencies or consultants are hired for selection and education of new employees, whereas in SMEs this work is done by owner or manager. Therefore, in this paper several facts were pointed out which need to be considered in selection of new employees, since every mistake in this activity can cause far-reaching consequences on functioning of SME.

AB - The economic development of Serbian republic is more and more connected with development of small and medium sized enterprises, which represent one of the main bases of Serbian economy. The economic potential of agriculture imposes the need of analyzing the condition in area of small and medium sized entrepreneurship which should be the carrier of future development of agribusiness. By ranging and grouping of Serbian republic municipalities (by discrimination and cluster analysis) according to level of development of small and medium sized entrepreneurship in agriculture, the clear view is got in current state of regional development of this agricultural sector as the possibilities of future development. By development of small and medium sized enterprises in agriculture it is possible to achieve strategic goals of Serbian republic agro development and for realization of these goals it is necessary to ensure the stable economic ambient, appropriate pre conditions as measures of support which will be stimulating for development of agribusiness.
