THE SEED VIGOUR OF SPELT PRODUCED AT THE MAIZE RESEARCH INSTITUTE “ZEMUN POLJE”

AB  - Spelt (Triticum spelta L.) has been increasingly attracting producers due to the biological properties and chemical composition of its seeds. As high-quality seeds are necessary for successful production, the vigour of organically and conventionally produced spelt seeds has been studied and results are presented in this paper. The seeds of the variety Nirvana produced by both methods at the Maize Research Institute “Zemun Polje” in 2015 were observed. According to the results, the germination energy of conventionally and organically produced seeds amounted to 30% and 69%, respectively. The total germination of conventionally and organically produced spelt seeds amounted to 99% and 93%, respectively. The percentage of abnormal seedlings of spelt produced by both methods amounted to 1% on average. The participation of diseased and dead seeds was higher in organically produced seeds (6%) than in conventionally produced seeds (0%). After the seed accelerated ageing test, a higher germination was observed in conventionally produced seeds (75%) than in organically produced seeds (68%). The electric conductivity of conventionally produced seeds amounted to 189.4 μS/cm and 195.2 μS/cm in the first and the second replication, respectively, while the values of organically produced seeds amounted to 95.5 μS/cm and 98.6 μS/cm, in the first and the second replication, respectively. The results obtained by the electrical conductivity test indicated that the conventionally produced spelt seeds (32.33 µS/cm g) were classified into the category of low vigour seeds in comparison to organically produced spelt seeds (27.65 µS/cm g). © 2022 University of Belgrade - Faculty of Agriculture. Effects of different production methods on content of some microelements in spelt seed (Triticum spelta)

AB  - Numerous worldwide studies have shown that there is a difference in the
mineral composition between organically and conventionally produced plants
and their products. Spelt (Triticum spelta), alternative grain from the family
Poaceae, occupies a very important place in the production of healthy food.
Also, spelt represents commonly grown organic crops due to the ideally
balanced ratio of nutrients. In addition to the macroelements, for the survival
and normal plant function some microelements are also needed. The aim of
this study was to determine the existence of differences in the content of
microelements and (B, Ba, Cu, Li, Mn and Se) in organically and
conventionally produced spelt seeds, in period of 2015-2017. The
determination of these elements was conducted by using Inductively Coupled
Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) with previous digestion of
samples and results were expressed as mg/kg of dry weight. In samples
collected during 2015 and 2016, B and Ba were not detected. In conventional
spelt seed, higher quantity of Ba (2.366 mg/kg), Cu (6.356 mg/kg) and Mn
(55.878 mg/kg) was determined, while organic spelt seed contained higher
content of B (0.875 mg/kg), Li (14.77 mg/kg) and Se (0.275 mg/kg) compared
to conventionally grown sample. The obtained results for the examined
elements revealed that the lowest content in analyzed seeds was for Li
(conventional seed from 2017, 0,008 mg/kg), while Mn was quantified in the
highest amount (conventional seed from 2017, 55.878 mg/kg).

AB  - A three-year experiment was conducted to determine the influence of ripening, variety and the production year (2017-2019) on seed and fruit quality of eggplant. The 1000 seed weight, germination capacity, the total protein and oil content of seeds as well as the total protein and sugar content of fruits were determined in three ripeness phases across three production years. All examined varieties exhibited significant differences in the weight of 1000 seeds during ripening, which varied from 1.44 to 4.42 g. Seeds extracted from fruits that reached commercial ripeness did not germinate. As the fruit ripens, its total sugar and protein content decreases, while the reverse is detected in the case of total protein and oil content of seeds. The full ripeness phase was the optimal time for harvesting fruits to obtain high germinating seeds.

AB  - The aim of the current study was to determine the content of several primary metabolites: total soluble sugars, starch and lipids, soluble sugars, fatty acids and triacylglycerols profile, and secondary metabolites: total phenolics and flavonoids, in the grains of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) cultivar ‘Kaća’. Additionally, grain antioxidant properties were assessed using ABTS•+ scavenging capacity and ferric reducing power (FRP) assays. Soybean was developed and grown in Serbia under two cultivation systems (conventional and organic) during two growing seasons (2016 and 2017). In both growing seasons and cultivation systems, soybean grains were characterised by reduced lipid content (8.16–14.34%) and as an excellent source of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Triacylglycerols (TAGs) with 44 equivalent carbon numbers (ECN44) represented the main fraction (30.95–32.79%) followed by ECN46 TAGs (23.27–26.36%). Low total soluble sugars (2.36–11.51%) content was determined. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis revealed a significant prevalence of non-reducing disaccharides (1.41–6.57%) among the individual sugars. Soybean grains were proved as a good source of phenolic (2493.9–4419.5 mg kg-1) and flavonoid (292.7–500.9 mg kg-1) compounds with the dominance of free (extractable) fractions. Strong positive correlations were observed between both cultivation systems and growing seasons indicating no clear differences for the majority of analysed parameters. All examined extracts possessed a significant ability (27.6–38.2%) to neutralize ABTS•+ radicals, while in the case of FRP assay a significant ability for iron ions (Fe3+) reduction was recorded for the samples from the second growing season.

AB  - Triacylglycerols (TAGs) and free fatty acids (FAs) present an important part of the grain lipid fraction. Knowing about its composition can be important information for both chemotaxonomic and nutritional parameters. The aim of the present study was to determine the TAG and FA profiles (and their similarities/differences) of several important crops (maize, spelt, buckwheat) grown under dissimilar agroecological systems - conventional and organic. Fatty acid composition was determined by applying the GC-FID method while HPLC method was used for the determination of the triacylglycerol profile of selected grains. To the best of our knowledge, the TAG profile of spelt grains was determined for the first time. Ten different FAs were identified in examined samples with a predominant presence of linoleic acid, except in the case of buckwheat (oleic acid) grains. Uniformly, buckwheat grains stood out due to the predominance of triglycerides with an equivalent carbon number of fifty (ECN 50) or forty-eight (ECN 48). In contrast, other samples contained ECN 44 and ECN 46 TAGs as the most represented triglycerides. Based on the principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster statistical analysis results, there is no uniformity in the differences between organic and conventional production growing systems.

To the best of our knowledge, the TAG profile of spelt grains was determined for the first time. Ten different FAs were identified in examined samples with a predominant presence of linoleic acid, except in the case of buckwheat (oleic acid) grains. Uniformly, buckwheat grains stood out due to the predominance of triglycerides with an equivalent carbon number of fifty (ECN 50) or forty-eight (ECN 48). In contrast, other samples contained ECN 44 and ECN 46 TAGs as the most represented triglycerides. Based on the principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster statistical analysis results, there is no uniformity in the differences between organic and conventional production growing systems.",

In organic agricultural production, with the purpose of protecting crops against pathogens and weeds, the application of synthetic pesticides is not allowed, due to which crops are exposed to greater contamination with mycotoxins. In this regard, the aim of the study was to observe the content of mycotoxins in seeds of maize, spelt wheat and soya bean organically and conventionally produced in 2015, 2016 and 2017. Seed samples were analysed for the presence of deoxynivalenol, zearalenone and aflatoxins B1, B2, G1 and G2 (by using methods liquid chromatography - HPLC/DAD and HPLC/FLD). It was established that the highest number of samples was not positive for the presence of these mycotoxins. Deoxynivalenol (101.53 μg/kg) and aflatoxin B1 (1.16 μg/kg) were detected only in seeds of organic maize produced in 2015 in concentrations less than prescribed by the Regulation on the maximum allowable residues of pesticides in food and feed, and on feed and food for which the maximum allowable residue content is determined, Official Gazette of the Republic of Serbia No. 22/2018 and 90/2019. On the basis of the obtained results, since only one sample of organic maize seed was positive for the presence of mycotoxins, it can be concluded that different production methods did not significantly effect to the content of mycotoxins in investigated types of seeds.

AB  - Usled izuzetno povoljnih prehrambenih, medicinskih i agronomskih karakteristika, kao i povoljnog hemijskog sastava semena koje je u skladu sa najsavremenijim nutritionističkim zahtevima, proizvodnja spelte dobija sve veći značaj, naročito u organskoj proizvodnji hrane. Veoma važan nutritivni faktor namirnica predstavlja sadržaj masnih kiselina u njima, neophodnih za pravilno funkcionisanje ljudskog organizma. Cilj ovog rada bio je da GC-FID metodom ispita sadržaj masnih kiselina u organskom i konvencionalnom semenu spelte, poreklom iz 2015 i 2016. godine. Sadržaj masnih kiselina izražen je kao % sadržaj u odnosu na ukupne masne kiseline. Detektovano je deset masnih kiselina. Kod obe vrste semena, u najvećoj količini se nalaze linolna (C18:2n-6) i oleinska (C18:1n-9) kiselina. Najveći udeo polinezasićenih masnih kiselina sadrži seme konvencionalne spelte (59.46 %), dok se u organskom semenu iz 2016. godine nalazio najveći udeo zasićenih (18.33 %) i mononezasićenih masnih kiselina (26.71 %).
AB  - Due to the extremely favorable nutritional, medical and agronomic characteristics, as well as the favorable chemical composition of seed which is in accordance with the current nutritional requirements, spelt production is gaining increasing importance, especially in organic food production. The fatty acids (FAs) content is a very important nutritional factor. Adequate FAs daily intake is necessary for the proper functioning of the human body. The aim of this paper was to examine fatty acids content in organic and conventional spelt seeds produced during 2015 and 2016 year. GC-FID method was used for FAs determination. FAs content is expressed as % of content in relation to the total fatty acids. Ten fatty acids were detected. Both types of seeds contained linoleic (C18:2n-6) and oleic acid (C18:1n-9) as predominant. Conventional spelt seed possessed higher content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (59.46 %) while organic seed from 2016 contained higher amount of saturated (18.33 %) and monounsaturated fatty acids (26.71 %).

AB  - The aim of this work was to determine elements composition and bioaccumulation process in ripe tomato fruits influenced by zinc feeding of plants which was applied in three different doses. Macro- and microelement content in growing soil, seeds, and fruits was determined by ICP-OES method. Health risk assessment was calculated according to the presence of some toxic elements. It was found that predominant macroelements were phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and magnesium followed by other ten determined elements. The presence of five potentially toxic elements (cadmium, chromium, lead, nickel, and strontium) in seed and fruits was detected. Bioaccumulation differences (especially in case of potassium) for some elements in seed and fruit were established. In both cases, calcium and lead were the only elements with antagonistic effect towards zinc feeding process. Health risk assessment has shown that acute risk is low for all toxic elements (according to acute hazard quotient (HQ) calculation) except for cadmium in fruit seed, where it can be characterized as moderate. Long-term hazard quotient calculation showed moderate risk in the case of lead (fruit skin and seed) and low values for other toxic elements. Since the most part of toxic elements was accumulated in tomato fruit skin and seed, peeling of fruits can significantly reduce health risk.

AB  - The paper discusses Serbia's neutrality policy in the current geopolitical relations between the United States and Russia. It also gives an overview of the European practice of neutrality policy and the Yugoslav experience of non-alignment, which preceded the proclamation of Serbia's military neutrality. Russia's attitude towards the neutrality of Serbia, in particular within the framework of Plan B4, as well as the future of Serbian neutrality, are also addressed.
AB  - U radu je razmotrena politika neutralnosti Srbije u aktualnim geopolitičkim odnosima SAD i Rusije. Dat je i osvrt na evropsku praksu politike neutralnosti i jugoslovensko iskustvo nesvrstanosti koji su prethodili proglašenju vojne neutralnosti Srbije. Razmotren je i odnos Rusije prema neutralnosti Srbije, posebno u okviru plana B4, kao i budućnost srpske neutralnosti.

AB  - In this paper we discuss the cooperation of the Serbian agricultural institutes, faculties and seed
industry which are deserved for the development of seed science and technology and its
applications in the sector of agriculture. It is particularly emphasized the connection between
research and educational institutions in the field of biotechnology and the importance of their
alienation. In addition, it raised a question concerning the reorganization of the existing
universities and research institutes in Serbia after the Bologna reform.
AB  - Univerzitet i polјoprivredni instituti u drugoj polovini ХХ stoleća izveli su uspešan prenos
znanja iz razvijenih zemalјa u SFRJ. Pre dvadesetak godina zapoĉela je tranzicija drţava istoĉne
i jugoistoĉne Evrope što je dovelo do znaĉajnih promena polјoprivrede i obrazovanja. Mnoga
velika srpska polјoprivredna preduzeća nestala su sa privredne scene a njihovo mesto zauzele su
strane kompanije. Promene su zahvatile i oblast visokog obrazovanja te se danas oseća potreba
da se aktualizuje veza izmeĊu naših univerziteta, istraţivaĉkih istitucija u oblasti polјoprivrede i
industrije semena kao vaţnog dela javnog ţivota. Naime, sredinom prošlog veka na prostoru
SFRJ obrazovana je mreţa polјoprivrednih istraţivaĉkih instituta i preduzeća koja su postigla
znaĉajne uspehe u oblasti selekcije i proizvodnje semena. U senci ovog uspeha ostala je ĉinjenica
da su polјoprivredni instituti od univerziteta preuzeli znaĉajan deo istraţivanja što je ograniĉilo
univerzitete, budući da je veći deo laboratorija i opreme bio u institutima. Univeziteti su zajedno
sa institutima imali sve: studente, nastavnike, laboratorije, istraţivaĉku opremu, ali oni su tada,
kao i danas, bili organizaciono odvojeni te ni jedni ni drugi nisu mogli da ostvare veće rezultate.
U uslovima društvene svojine ovaj naĉin rada bio je odrţiv. Danas je takvo razdvajanje smetnja
njihovom razvoju te se polјoprivredni instituti prilagoĊavaju privredi u kojoj dominira privatna
svojina. Shodno promenama u društvu, postojeća drţavna univerzitetska mreţa pretrpela je
promene primenom bolonjske reforme kojom je srpsko visoko obrazovanje upodoblјeno
eropskom školskom prostoru. Na osnovu dosadašnjeg iskustva naziru se tri scenarija ureĊenja
univerziteta. Prvi je oĉuvanje postojeće organizacije (pluralizam uz tihe, evolutivne promene),
drugi je ukidanje privatnih univerziteta (radikalno rešenje), treći je podela postojećih univerziteta
na manje celine prema nauĉnim oblastima (tehniĉki, biotehnološki i td). Moguća regionalizacija
Srbije nametnuće pitanje poloţaja univerziteta u odnosu na lokalnu samoupravu (gradove) tj. da
li su univerziteti isklјuĉivo nacionalne (drţavne) institucije?
Buduće promene visokog obrazovanja morale bi da poĊu od toga da će se jedan deo instituta
pridruţiti univerzitetima dok će ostali oĉuvati svoju pravnu samostalnost i postati ono što su
uvek i bili – preduzeća koja se bave proizvodnjom i prodajom semenske robe. Ova
transformacija olakšala bi ureĊenje odnosa izmeĊu polјoprivrednih instituta (semenskih
preduzeća), univerziteta i banke bilјnih gena. To je od posebnog znaĉaja budući da u postojećim
istraţivaĉkim programima instituta, koje finansira vlada, nema jasne orijentacije na semenarstvo.
Ne ĉudi što struĉna terminologija u oblasti semenarstva slabo razvijena a što bi se moglo
pobolјšati udruţenim delovanjem predstavnika akademske zajednice i semenske industrije i
podizanjem nivoa domaćih struĉnih ĉasopisa u ovoj oblasti. Pred industrijom semena i
univerzitetom stoje brojna pitanja koja su od znaĉaja za dalјi razvoj semenarstva i polјoprivrede.

Germination and seedling growth response on sunflower seeds to priming and temperature stress

AB  - The present paper shows results obtained on effects of priming of sunflower seeds, subjected to accelerated ageing and the cold test, on seed vigour. Seeds were primed with distilled water, the potassium nitrate solution (0.2%) and the gibberellic acid solution (0.04%). The following parameters were tested: energy of germination, germination, proportion of abnormal seedlings, lengths of roots and shoots of normal seedlings. Accelerated ageing in the course of 3 and 5 days resulted in a statistically significant reduction in energy of germination and germination; it adversely affected the length of roots and shoots and it increased the proportion of abnormal seedlings. Seed priming with all three solutions mitigated adverse effects of 3-day accelerated ageing on energy of germination. Furthermore, seed priming with gibberellic acid prior to 3-day accelerated ageing positively affected seed germination and neutralized a negative effect of accelerated ageing on the number of abnormal seedlings, as well as on lengths of shoots and roots of normal seedlings. The cold test (at 5°C for 7 days) negatively affected energy of germination and the root length, increased the proportion of abnormal seedlings and did not affect seed germination. Priming of seeds with distilled water prior to the cold test completely neutralized the adverse effect of low temperatures on energy of germination. Finally, priming of seeds with all three solutions completely neutralized the adverse effect of cold test on the root length.

AB  - Vigour is defined as the potential of seeds to germinate rapidly and uniformly under adverse and
optimum conditions. These criteria imply that vigorous seeds will establish early field stands

povolјnim i u nepovolјnim uslovima. Ona izraţava obim oštećenja koja se vremenom nakuplјaju
u semenu. Razliĉiti metodi ispitivanja ţivotne sposobnosti semena izvode se tako da u relativno
kratkom roku, jednostavno i pouzdano daju sliku kvaliteta semena i dopune rezultate dobijene
ispitivanjem klijavosti. Partije semena koje imaju visoku klijavost ali slabo nicanje u polјu imaju
nisku ţivotnu sposobnost. Razlike u ţivotnoj sposobnosti semena takoĊe se odraţavaju na brzinu
klijanja i razvoja klijanaca bilo u povolјnim bilo nepovolјnim uslovima.

ispitivanja ţivotne sposobnosti i obiĉno prate nivo jedne od posledica starenja. U ovu grupu
ispitivanja spadaju merenje elektroprovodlјivosti sadrţaja osloboĊenog iz semena (pasulј, soja,
bob); zatim procena enzimske aktivnosti u semenu koja se boji tetrazolijumom (ţita, soja,
pamuk, grašak, detelina) ili merenje aktivnosti dekarboksilaze glutaminske kiseline (soja, pasulј).
Struĉna literatura poznaje brojne metaboliĉke markere pogodne za biohemijska ispitivanja
ţivotne sposbnosti što zalazi u genomiku, proteomiku i druge uske discipline koje mogu pruţiti
korisne, merlјive parametre ţivotne sposobnosti semena. Direktne i indirektne metode ispitivanja
ţivotne sposobnosti dalјe će se razvijati kako u pogledu osobina koje prate tako i u pogledu
bilјnih vrsta na koje se primenjuju te je od posebnog znaĉaja njihova sistematizacija i
standardizacija.

AB  - The four-replicate trial with a local variety Domaci oranz (Local orange) was set up according to the randomised complete-block design in four locations (Gorobilje, Arilje, Pancevo and Kacarevo) and two variants of fertilizing (200 kg ha(-1) KAN with 27 % of nitrogen and 400 kg ha(-1) NPK 15:15:15) and the control without fertilizing. According to the three factorial analysis of variance for all observed traits it was determined that there were very significant differences within growing locations and fertilizing variants and their interaction (L x F). The highest seed yield (672.84 kg ha(-1)) was detected in the variant with 400 kg NPK ha(-1). The significantly lower seed yield (579.84 kg ha(-1)) was obtained in the variant with KAN at the rate of 200 kg ha(-1) and the control variant (344.88 kg ha(-1)). The highest total seed germination of 91.84% and the 1000-seed weight (6.83 g) were obtained in the variant with 400 kg NPK ha(-1). Total seed germination (85.87) and the 1000-seed weight (5.82 g) obtained in the control were significantly higher than total seed germination (83.31%) and the 1000-seed weight (5.42 g) obtained in the variant with 200 kg ha(-1) KAN.

Cultural pattern of geopolitical parasitism

AB  - This study analyzes the Yugoslav geopolitical transition and its impact on the rise of corruption in the Balkan region, with special reference to the role of the JNA. Geopolitical parasitism has evolved and taken root in the period 1945-1980 because the communist state has managed to provide international recognition and has won a large number of people to their side. Corruption was conceived in the centre of the military and state security apparatus. Shortly before the breakdown of Yugoslavia it has grown and has exploded into all the countries of the former Yugoslavia.
AB  - U tekstu je analizirana jugoslovenska geopolitička tranzicija i njen uticaj na pojavu korupcije na balkanskom prostoru s posebnim osvrtom na ulogu JNA. Geopolitički parazitizam razvio se i ukorenio u vreme 1945-1980 i to stoga što je komunistička država uspela da obezbedi spoljnopolitičko priznanje i da za svoj projekat pridobije veliki broj stanovnika. U središtu vojnog i bezbednosnog aparata začeta je korupcija koja se pred raspad SFRJ razvila i razbuktala u svim državama nastalim na prostoru bivše SFRJ.

Seed priming with antioxidants improves sunflower seed germination and seedling growth under unfavorable germination conditions

AB  - The results of studying the effects of sunflower seed priming with an aqueous solution of ascorbic acid (A), tocopherol (T), and glutathione (G) performed prior to accelerated ageing and a cold test are presented in this paper. Germination, the percentage of abnormal seedlings, and the lengths of both roots and shoots were monitored. The results showed that the cold test caused a drastic drop in germination, an adverse effect on the shoot length, an increase in the percentage of abnormal seedlings, and no effect on the root length. Germination of seeds primed with the solution of A, T, and G (A+T+G) on which the cold test was then performed did not differ from seed germination of the control. Moreover, seed priming with the A+T+G solution of antioxidant substances prior to the cold test annulled the adverse effect of the cold test on shoot length, as well as on the percentage of abnormal seedlings. Seed priming with the A+T+G solution of antioxidants did not affect root length. Accelerated ageing resulted in a statistically significant decrease in seed germination and root length, but neither shoot length nor the percentage of abnormal seedlings was affected by accelerated ageing. The obtained results show that seed priming with the solution of antioxidant substances performed prior to accelerated ageing had a positive effect on the length of both roots and shoots. Seed priming with the solution of antioxidant substances performed prior to accelerated ageing did not affect germination, but it did increase the percentage of abnormal seedlings. The effect of antioxidant solution priming on the vigor of sunflower seeds exposed to the cold test was significantly more pronounced than that on seeds exposed to accelerated ageing.

Germination, the percentage of abnormal seedlings, and the lengths of both roots and shoots were monitored. The results showed that the cold test caused a drastic drop in germination, an adverse effect on the shoot length, an increase in the percentage of abnormal seedlings, and no effect on the root length. Germination of seeds primed with the solution of A, T, and G (A+T+G) on which the cold test was then performed did not differ from seed germination of the control. Moreover, seed priming with the A+T+G solution of antioxidant substances prior to the cold test annulled the adverse effect of the cold test on shoot length, as well as on the percentage of abnormal seedlings. Seed priming with the A+T+G solution of antioxidants did not affect root length. Accelerated ageing resulted in a statistically significant decrease in seed germination and root length, but neither shoot length nor the percentage of abnormal seedlings was affected by accelerated ageing. The obtained results show that seed priming with the solution of antioxidant substances performed prior to accelerated ageing had a positive effect on the length of both roots and shoots. Seed priming with the solution of antioxidant substances performed prior to accelerated ageing did not affect germination, but it did increase the percentage of abnormal seedlings. AB  - The oil content and fatty acids, unsaponifiable composition and antioxidant activities of the seed oil from three Malvaceae species (Malva sylvestris L., Malva sylvestris L. var. mauritiana and Althaea officinalis L.) from Serbia were determined. The oil yields from the seeds varied from 7.18 to 9.60%. The main fatty acids of the seed oils were linoleic acid (44.14-54.49%), oleic acid (13.00-16.99%) and palmitic acid (11.45-24.29%). A small amount of cyclopropenoid acids, up to 1.85% was also established. The predominant sterol in all seed oils was β-sitosterol (11.51-17.34 mg/g of oil). The antioxidant potential of all the investigated seed oils was evaluated by radical scavenging activity using 2,2-diphenyl-1- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay.

Fatty acids and tocopherol content in sunflower seeds affected by accelerated ageing and priming with antioxidant solutions

AB  - Effects of accelerated ageing on the contents of both, fatty acids and tocopherol in sunflower seeds, and the influence of priming with antioxidant solutions on the tocopherol content were observed in the present study. Accelerated ageing did not affect contents of linoleic (C18:2), oleic (C18:1), stearic C18:0) and palmitic (C16:0) acids. It was determined that the contents of alpha-, beta- and gamma-tocopherol decreased in seeds subjected to accelerated ageing and in seeds primed prior to accelerated ageing. Priming with antioxidant solutions prior to accelerated ageing differently affected the contents of alpha-, beta- and gamma-tocopherol in seeds. Furthermore, seeds primed with a solution of a lower concentration of tocopherol and simultaneously primed with a solution of all three antioxidant substances (ascorbic acid, tocopherol and glutathione) had a higher content of alpha-tocopherol after accelerated ageing in relation to seeds which were not primed. Seeds primed with solutions of ascorbic acid, tocopherol (higher concentration) and glutathione had a lower content of alpha-tocopherol than seeds which were not primed prior to accelerated ageing. The total content of beta- and gamma-tocopherol in primed seeds were significantly lower (p >= 0.05) than in seeds which were not primed prior to accelerated ageing, except in seeds simultaneously primed with the solution of all three antioxidant substances.

AB  - The aim of this study was to determine the effects of substrates and temperatures on Cynara cardunculus seed germination. The tests encompassed the following substrates - filter paper, sand and compost. The follow-ing temperature regimes were applied on each substrate used for germination tests: 20/30°C (T 1), 20°C (T 2) and 25°C after 10-day chilling at 10°C (T 3). The analysis of variance showed that there were statistically significant differences between the first counts and the total seed germination, depending on the substrate type, tempera-ture regime and medium × temperature regime interaction The highest germination was detected on filter paper, whereas the lowest was on sand. Furthermore, the highest germination was determined at a constant temperature of 20°C (T 2), while the lowest, at a temperature regime of 25°C after 10-day chilling at 10°C (T 3).

AB  - In this paper the results of the research of marsh-mallow seed germination on three substrates: filter paper, sand and soil are presented. The part of seeds was germinated on the substrate soaked by potassium nitrate (treatment) and the other one was germinated on the non-treated substrate (control). The first count was determined after seven days and total germination was determined twenty days after seed was germinated. The obtained results show that filter paper is more suitable substrate for marsh-mallow research than sand or soil, which is confirmed by the results of the first count and total germination. Potassium nitrate stimulated marsh-mallow seed and increased germination in comparison with the control of all investigated substrates. The highest germination was in the seed treated by potassium nitrate on filter paper substrate. .
AB  - U radu su prikazani rezultati ispitivanja klijavosti semena belog sleza na tri podloge: filter papiru, pesku i zemljištu. Deo semena naklijavan je na podlozi natopljenoj kalijum nitratom (tretman), a drugi na netretiranoj podlozi (kontrola). Energija klijanja utvrđena je posle sedam dana a ukupna klijavost nakon 20 dana od stavljanja semena na klijanje. Dobijeni rezultati pokazuju da je filter papir pogodnija podloga za ispitivanje belog sleza od peska ili zemljišta što potvrđuju rezultati energije klijanja i ukupne klijavosti. Kalijum nitrat delovao je stimulativno na seme belog sleza i povećao klijavost u odnosu na kontrolu na svim ispitivanim podlogama. Najvišu klijavost imalo je seme tretirano kalijum nitratom ispitivano na podlozi od filter papira. .

Cilj eksperimenta bio je određivanje temperature i dužine sušenja za ispitivanje vlažnosti semena belog sleza. Primenjivane su temperature od 105 do 130°C u trajanju od 2 do 17 sati. Na osnovu rezultata ispitivanja konstatovano je da se stabilizacija mase semena postiže na 130°C. AB  - This paper discusses seed vigour as the most important seed characteristic the seed lot quality depends on. In Serbian, the terms such as vigor, viability and germ inability are used in various ways, depending on the author, which leaves room to possible misunderstanding in interpretation of research results and misuse of expert terminology. The modest lexical fund, compared to that of the English language, for instance, greatly contributes to the problem, and so does the absence of terminological standardization. Since the current technology and research level in seed science and technology requires appropriate terminology, this article offers an outline of basic seed traits related expert terminology as a foundation of future seed research and technology development.
AB  - U ovom raduje definisana životna sposobnost semena kao najvažnije svojstvo semena od koga zavisi kvalitet partije semena. Na srpskom govornom području se pojmovi kao što je životna sposobnost, klijavost i kapacitet klijanja upotrebljavaju na različit način, zavisno od autora, što dovodi do nedoumica u interpretaciji istraživačkih rezultata i neprecizne upotrebe stručnih termina. Tome posebno doprinosi skromnija leksika u odnosu na, recimo, englesko govorno područje i odsustvo terminološke standardizacije. Kako postojeći nivo tehnologije i istraživanja u oblasti semenarstva traži uspostavljanje odgovarajuće terminologije u ovom članku su skicirana osnovna svojstva semena kako bi se upotpunio stručni jezik kao osnova daljeg razvoja istraživanja i tehnologije semena.
