AB  - Diplotaxis tenuifolia (L.) DC, recognized by its common name of wild rocket, has a notable role within the Brassicaceae family. The leaves of this plant offer a unique flavor that enhances culinary preparations, alongside their influence on improvement in overall human well-being due to their nutrient and bioactive compound content. Wild rocket possesses a wide range of antioxidants, incorporating vitamins such as C and E, along with carotenoids, glucosinolates, and flavonoids. The objective of this study was to assess the antioxidant properties of the fresh leaves from three wild rocket hybrids: Marte F1, Venere F1, and T&T F1. Using an 80% acetone solution as the solvent, powdered plant material was subjected to a 3-h extraction period at a ratio of 1:10 (plant material/solvent). After the extraction process, the antioxidant properties of the extracts were assessed spectrophotometrically using four distinct assays: DPPH⦁, ferric reducing power (FRP), in vitro phosphomolybdenum total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC). Phytochemical analyses disclosed a variation in the quencher assay results among hybrids, ranging from 5.42 to 6.19 μmol Trolox/g. Nevertheless, the statistical analysis indicated a lack of statistically significant differences among the hybrids within this specific quencher assay. Similarly, no statistically significant differences were found among the samples in relation to the TAC results. The T&T hybrid achieved the highest results in both the FRP and the CUPRAC assays (2.79 mg/g AAE and 17.73 mg/g AAE respectively). Notably, there were no statistical differences observed between the T&T and Venere hybrids. However, both the T&T and Venere hybrids exhibited statistically significant differences when compared to the Marte hybrid. The overall results showed variations among the chosen hybrids regarding their antioxidant properties, while indicating the potential of fertilization in the enhancement of the bioactive compound profile and biological activity.

AB  - Endive (Cichorium endivia L.) is a leafy vegetable with excellent nutritional 
composition and bitter taste. Unlike in Southern and Western Europe, the 
vegetable is little known in Serbia. In an experiment conducted in the 
greenhouse in the fall of 2022 (August-October), the influence of mulch and 
bioregulators on the production characteristics of the narrow-leaved curly 
endive cultivar "Cigal" (C.e. var. crispum) was studied. An extract of the 
seaweed Ecklonia maxima, trade name Kelpak, was used as a bioregulator. 
Endive was grown on raised beds with and without PE mulch film. The 
bioregulator was applied in several ways, from watering the seedlings to foliar 
treatment. The best results were obtained with the combination in which the 
seedlings were irrigated with bioregulator before planting and then treated with 
it for 10 days. The total weight of the endive leaf rosette was 658.1 g for this 
combination, while it was 550.7 g for the control. The plants grown on the 
mulch film showed a statistically very significant increase in the total weight 
of the leaf rosette. All other parameters studied behaved similarly: the number 
of leaves in the rosette, the height and width of the leaf rosette, and the mass 
of the tree. The commercial yield of endive after removal of the oldest leaves 
ranged from 32.7 to 40.4 t/ha. Based on these studies, it can be recommended 
for production practice to grow endive on dams and with mulch film, and to 
treat the plants with natural bioregulators from planting to preharvest.

AB  - Leafy greens play a vital role in promoting a well-balanced and nourishing diet. They represent an 
abundant source of nutrients, as well as several health promoting bioactive compounds. Wild rocket 
(Diplotaxis tenuifolia (L.) DC.) is an herbaceous plant belonging to the Brassicaceae family. It is 
primarily cultivated for its pungent-tasting leaves, which are widely utilized in salads and culinary 
preparations. Wild rocket has a rich historical background in medicinal applications, serving various 
purposes such as anti-inflammatory, astringent, purifying, diuretic, digestive, soothing, invigorating 
and laxative. Gaining insights into the health-promoting properties can offer valuable knowledge 
regarding its purpose as a functional food and its potential impact on disease prevention and overall 
well-being. The leaves of wild rocket are highly nutritious and serve as a rich source of both macro 
and microelements such as calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, zinc and manganese. The consumption 
of leaves can complement and enhance the daily intake of these vital elements, contributing to a well rounded and balanced nutritional profile. It also contains significant amount of vitamin C, the essential 
vitamin renowned for its indispensable role in supporting immune system function, acting as a potent 
antioxidant, aiding in wound healing and maintaining the health of the skin. Although present in lower 
concentrations, Vitamin E and Vitamin A are also found in the leaves and have a notable impact on 
human health as they combat oxidative stress which is associated with neurodegenerative conditions 
such as Alzheimer’s disease. The presence of carotenoids and flavonoids in wild rocket enhances its 
total antioxidant capacity and contribute to healthy vision and help reduce the risk of age-related 
macular degeneration. Never the less, glucosinolates contained in wild rocket leaves and their metabolites 
have demonstrated the ability to inhibit the growth and proliferation of cancer cells.

Biofortification: an agrotechnical measure in the production of functional food

AB  - Fortification - the process of enriching products with essential nutrients has been used for many years
in various branches of the food industry. However, the term biofortification is more recent and refers
to increasing the concentration of essential nutrients, especially vitamins and microelements, in edible
plant parts. The idea of biofortification as a measure in agricultural production was developed with
the aim of reducing the consequences of “hidden hunger”, which is particularly pronounced in
underdeveloped countries, and refers to insufficient intake of essential nutrients. Current research
shows that more than two billion people in the world are affected by a deficiency of microelements,
particularly zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), selenium (Se) and vitamin A. In the context of biofortification, there
are several methods that can be used to improve the nutritional value of plant products, namely:
transgenic breeding methods (genetically modified crops), conventional breeding methods (selection
and crossing) and agrobiofortification (application of fertilizers containing microelements).
Agrobiofortification can be done in several ways: soil or foliar application of fertilizers or by treating
seed before sowing. Agrobiofortification is considered as an efficient, economically justified and simple
method that can be applied to all crops with known cultivation technology, with the aim of obtaining
functional food. The specificity of agrobiofortification is reflected in the knowledge of the affinity of
the plant species for the adoption of certain elements, in order to implement mineral nutrition in a way
that ensures optimal growth and development of plants with the simultaneous accumulation of necessary
elements in the edible plant parts. In addition, it is necessary to determine the optimal dose of fertilizer
that is ecologically and economically justified, as well as the optimal timing of fertilizer application,
that is, to determine the phase of plant development when the uptake of plant nutrients is greatest.

AB  - Marigold (Calendula officinalis L.) from the Asteraceae family is annual or perennial
plant with many purposes: pot or garden ornamental plant, an ingredient in cosmetic
products, medicinal plant and edible food decoration. Marigold flowers are source of
bioactive compounds beneficial to human health. About that, in this study 80% methanol and
80% acetone extracts were used for spectrophotometric determination of photosynthetic
pigments chlorophyll a and b, and total carotenoid content (TCC), total phenolic (TPC),
flavonoid (TFC), and hydroxycinnamic acid derivative (HCAs) content (Tab. 1) and
antioxidant activity by TAC (in vitro phosphomolybdenum), FRP (ferric reducing power),
CUPRAC (cupric reducing antioxidant capacity), DPPH⦁ (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl
radical scavenging) assays (Tab. 2). The obtained results were analyzed by one-way analysis
of variance (ANOVA) and post hoc Tukey`s HSD test and the results were expressed as
mean ± standard deviation (SD). The obtained indicated statistically significantly higher content of all tested
parameters in acetone extracts compared to methanol extracts. The content of photosynthetic
pigments was lower compared to other edible flowers pigment content from the Asteraceae
family. Regarding the antioxidant activity of marigold flowers, in TAC and FRP assays
acetone extract also had higher antioxidant activity, while in CUPRAC and DPPH⦁ assays
there is no statistically significant difference between the tested extracts. Based on their
phytochemical properties, marigold flowers can be classified as functional food.

AB  - Wild rocket, scientifically known as Diplotaxis tenuifolia (L.) DC is a leafy green
plant from the Brassicaceae family. Native to the Medditerian region, today this perennial
plant is cultivated worldwide, owing to the distinctive pungent taste of its deeply lobed green
leaves. Beyond their culinary uses, the leaves of wild rocket exhibit potential for
pharmaceutical applications due to their rich bioactive compounds profile. These include
vitamins, pigments (chlorophyll a and b, carotenoids), phenolics, and glucosinolates (GLSs),
all exhibiting strong antioxidant and anti-cancer activities. This study aimed to evaluate the
effects of biofortification, employing biostimulant Kelpak and two distinct foliar fertilizers
(iron and potassium-enriched) in comparison to a control group, on the phenolic and
glucosinolate content in the leaves of wild rocket hybrid T&T F1. Using an ultra-highperformance
liquid chromatography (UHPLC) system, coupled with a quadrupole time-offlight
mass spectrometry (Q-ToF-MS), a total of twenty-three plant phenolics was quantified,
and the relative content of four glucosinolates was evaluated in 70% methanol extracts.
Concerning the overall content of phenolic compounds, treatment involving iron application
showed the highest levels at 3549.1 mg/kg of fresh weight (FW), while the control group
exhibited the lowest content (2171.4 mg/kg FW). Moreover, the most prominent phenolics
included quercetin-3,4'-di-O-hexoside-3'-O-(6"-sinapoyl)-hexoside (ranging from 527.2 to
651.8 mg/kg FW among groups) and 1,8-dipropoxyanthraquinone (278.3-558.5 mg/kg FW).
The control and iron-enriched samples exhibited the presence of kaempferol-3,7,4'-tri-Ohexoside
+ HCOOH and isorhamnetin-3-O-hexoside-4'-O-gentobioside, in addition to the
non-identified sinapic acid hydroxide in the Kelpak treated group. Additionally, the
determination of relative GLSs content of glucosativin, glucoerucin, neoglucobrassicin, and
DMB-GLS revealed that glucosativin was the dominant compound, with proportions ranging
from 79.8% (Kelpak treatments) to 89.1% (iron treatments). In conclusion, selected hybrid
biofortification treatments, notably through the use of iron foliar fertilizers, enhanced
phenolic and glucosinolate leaf content, highlighting its potential significance in nutrition and
medicine.

AB  - Myristica fragrans (fam. Myristicaceae) – the source of the spice nutmeg, is evergreen tree
widespread in warm and humid tropical climate. Indonesia is the largest nutmeg world
producer. Nutmeg seeds are valuable due many uses: in cooking (spice in sweet or salt dishes),
traditional medicine (diseases of the nervous, digestive and dentistry), additive in the products
of the pharmaceutical and perfumery industry. Nutmeg seed is a good source of primary
(carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, vitamins) and secondary metabolites (terpenes, phenolics,
organic acids). The main components are lipids (30-40%) and essential oil (10-15%). Scientific
sources indicate on many pharmacological effects of nutmeg: antidepressant, hepatoprotective,
antioxidant, anticancer, etc. Climatic conditions have significant impact on flavor and
therapeutic effect of nutmeg. In this research the content of total phenolics (TPC), total
flavonoids (TFC), total hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives (THCAs) and total carotenoids
(TCC) was determined by spectrophotometrically methods, in order to evaluate the potential
healing effect of nutmeg. Tested extracts were prepared from dried and ground nutmeg seed
commercially purchased, using two solvents (80% acetone and warm water - 50°C) and two
extraction techniques (solvent extraction (SE) and ultrasound assisted extraction (USE)). The
obtained results indicate a rich content of carotenoids and phenolics in acetone extracts.
Precisely, the TCC was 49.94 ± 0.70 μg/g in extract prepared by SE and 53.01 ± 1.28 μg/g in
extract prepared by UAE. The TPC in acetone extracts prepared by SE and UAE was similar,
28.93 ± 0.18 mg GAE/g of DW and 28.78 ± 0.07 mg GAE/g of DW, respectively, which is
statistically significantly higher than the TPC achieved in water extracts (2.97 ± 0.14 mg GAE/g
of DW for SE extract and 3.00 ± 0.21 mg GAE/g of DW for UAE extract). The TFC and THACs
achieved in acetone extracts was statistically significantly higher than TFC and THACs
observed in water extracts, where in the case of both solvents, the extraction technique does not
influence statistically significantly on the TF and THACs content. The TFC and THACs in
acetone extracts prepared by SE was 1.50 ± 0.06 mg CE/g of DW and 6.13 ± 0.08 mg CGAE/g
of DW, while acetone extracts prepared by UAE contained TF 1.59 ± 0.00 mg CE/g of DW and
THACs 5.96 ± 0.27 mg CGAE/g of DW, respectively.

AB  - Allium species are known as a rich source of many compounds with potential healing effects. Biofortification is recognized as an effective agrotechnical measure for raising the level of biogenic elements—especially microelements in the edible parts of these species, so Allium can be considered as a ‘natural dietary supplement’. The aim of this research was to test the effects of foliar application of Se fertilizer (Na2SeO4) in different doses (control—0, 10, 20 and 30 g per ha) on the content of macro, microelements and secondary metabolites (SMs)—free phenolics, flavonoids and hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives in the edible parts, i.e., leaves of two selected Allium species in Serbia (A. odorum and A. schoenoprasum), which grew in open field conditions over the course of two growing seasons. The bioaccumulation factor (BAF), as an indicator of the ability of plants to accumulate biogenic elements, was also determined. Although with no full regularity, the dose of 10 g of Se per ha yielded the highest content for the most biogenic elements for both alliums in the first growing season, i.e., a dose of 20 g of Se per ha for A. schoenoprasum, and a dose of 30 g of Se per ha for A. odorum in the second growing season. The obtained results justified the Se-biofortification of different alliums. The BAF values indicated the ability of both Allium species to accumulate S, K and P in their leaves during both growing seasons. The accumulation of potentially toxic elements was not recorded for either species, emphasizing the safety of the produced plant material for human consumption. Additionally, Se-treated plants had higher SM contents compared to control plants. The growing season also showed an impact on SM content; i.e., in the second season, characterized as drought-stressed, the synthesis of SMs was significantly higher compared to that in the first season. Further research should be directed towards finding the appropriate dose of Se, expanded in the sense of conducting research in controlled conditions, as well as different ways of applying Se fertilizer. The idea of this study was also to popularize the examined Allium species, which are rarely grown in the territory of Serbia. © 2023 by the authors.

Biofortification is recognized as an effective agrotechnical measure for raising the level of biogenic elements—especially microelements in the edible parts of these species, so Allium can be considered as a ‘natural dietary supplement’. The aim of this research was to test the effects of foliar application of Se fertilizer (Na2SeO4) in different doses (control—0, 10, 20 and 30 g per ha) on the content of macro, microelements and secondary metabolites (SMs)—free phenolics, flavonoids and hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives in the edible parts, i.e., leaves of two selected Allium species in Serbia (A. odorum and A. schoenoprasum), which grew in open field conditions over the course of two growing seasons. The bioaccumulation factor (BAF), as an indicator of the ability of plants to accumulate biogenic elements, was also determined. Although with no full regularity, the dose of 10 g of Se per ha yielded the highest content for the most biogenic elements for both alliums in the first growing season, i.e., a dose of 20 g of Se per ha for A. schoenoprasum, and a dose of 30 g of Se per ha for A. odorum in the second growing season. The obtained results justified the Se-biofortification of different alliums. AB  - Nutmeg is the spice from evergreen-tree Myristica fragrans from family Myristicaceae, obtained 
by peeling seeds from cover (mace). Nutmeg is sold as whole seed or ground spice, and is also a 
raw material for several commercial products: essential oil and nutmeg butter. The modern 
lifestyle in many ways contributes to the generation of free radicals and other reactive oxygen 
species (ROS), which leads to the appearance of oxidative stress in the human body. Since 
oxidative stress is found in the pathophysiology of many current diseases, (cardiovascular, 
diabetes, cancer, atherosclerosis) supplementation of products rich in antioxidants is resorted to. 
Plants, including spices, are recognized as an excellent source of natural antioxidants. Many 
studies have reported a wide range of pharmacological properties of nutmeg spice, including 
antioxidant, hepatoprotective, anti-inflamatory, antifungal, antibacterial. The antioxidant activity 
of nutmeg is attributed to the rich content of total phenolics, especially caffic acid and catechin. In 
this research, local purchased ground nutmeg spice was used to prepare extracts in 80% acetone 
and warm water (50 ºC), using ultrasound assisted extraction and without ultrasound assisted 
extraction technique. The aim of study was to determine antioxidant activity of nutmeg spice by 
using spectrophotomtric assays: 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH⦁
) radical scavenging, 
cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC), ferric reducing power (FRP) and in vitro 
phosphomolybdenum assay. The highest antioxidant capacity was observed in acetone extract 
obtained by UAE, in DPPH⦁ assay (57.49 ± 5.01 % Inh). The lowest antioxidant capacity was 
measured in water extracts, in FRAP assay, and obtained results was same for both extraction 
techniques (0.20 ± 0.00 mg/g ascorbic acid equivalents (AAE)). In general, acetone extracts 
exhibited a stronger antioxidant activity compared to water extracts, regardless of the applied 
extraction technique.

AB  - Indoor flowers are an unavoidable element in modern interior design. In addition to
enriching the living and working space in terms of decoration, flowers also have a beneficial
effect on people: it improves mood and increases productivity at work. The benefits of growing
flowers in the interior are numerous and of particular importance for human health is the fact
that they improve air quality and reduce the concentrations of many pollutants. Pollutants in
the interior can be divided into non-biological and biological according to the source. In most
cases, external pollution is mentioned as the main source of increased concentrations of nonbiological indoor air pollutants. The assumption is that the mechanism of air purification
implies the absorption of volatile compounds by plant leaves, which are then transported to the
roots, and where they are then decomposed by microorganisms. On the other hand, it is
supposed that certain compounds characterized as air pollutants are degraded and used in plant
metabolism. Research shows that the ability to remove organic volatile compounds from the
air into the interior is different and depends on the type of flower species. Indoor flowers that
have been shown to be effective in air purifying are from the following families: Moracae,
Araceae, Arecaceae, Araliaceae, Orchidaceae, etc. The choice of flowers to alleviate indoor air
pollution depends not only on their ability to clean the air, but also on their needs for care, light
and finally of personal taste.

AB  - Lettuce, or Lactuca sativa L., is a leafy vegetable from Asteraceae family, that 
has great nutritional value and it is beneficial for human health. Leaves of this 
annual plant are great source of fiber in addition to bioactive compounds and 
are mostly consumed fresh, whereas in some cultures stems are also being 
prepared as meals. Cultivars of this cool-seasoned vegetable differ by the leaf 
number, color, size, shape and edges, stem and rosette development, etc. In this 
study, five lettuce cultivars were analyzed in order to inspect their impact on 
morphological properties and yield: Aleppo (type Lollo Bionda), Carmesi
(Lollo Rosso), Murai (Red Oak leaf), Kiribati (Green Oak leaf) and Tourbillon 
(Crystal). The experiment was conducted in plastic greenhouse, using the 
method of randomized block design, where each of four repetitions consisted 
of eight plants. The analyzed traits were: number of leaves, fresh leaves weight, 
stem weight, diameter and height of plants, rosette diameter and height, whole 
plant weight. Statistical analyses pointed out significant differences for each 
examined morphological aspect. The largest diameter of the rosette was 
measured in cultivar Crystal (26.6 cm), as well as the diameter (25.9 mm), 
weight (7.3 g) and the height of the stem (44.6 mm). Further, cultivar Green 
Oak leaf was formed the largest number of leaves (39.7) in addition to greatest 
fresh leaves weight (343.5 g) and whole plant weight (347.0 g). Cultivar Lollo 
Rosso was achieved the highest rosette (18.5 cm) among others, whereas the 
lowest values in all parameters were obtained from Red Oak leaf cultivar.

AB  - The objective of this study is to assess the possibility of using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) multispectral imagery for rapid monitoring, water stress detection and yield prediction under different sowing periods and irrigation treatments of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris, L). The study used a two-factorial split-plot design, divided into subplots. There were three sowing periods (plots; I—mid April, II—end of May/beginning of June, III—third decade of June/beginning of July) and three levels of irrigation (subplots; full irrigation (F)—providing 100% of crop evapotranspiration (ETc), deficit irrigation (R)—providing 80% of ETc, and deficit irrigation (S) providing—60% of ETc). Canopy cover (CC), leaf area index (LAI), transpiration (T) and soil moisture (Sm) were monitored in all treatments during the growth period. A multispectral camera was mounted on a drone on seven occasions during two years of research which provided raw multispectral images. The NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), MCARI1 (Modified Chlorophyll Absorption in Reflectance Index), NDRE (Normalized Difference Red Edge), GNDVI (Green Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) and Optimized Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (OSAVI) were computed from the images. The results indicated that NDVI, MCARI1 and GNDVI derived from the UAV are sensitive to water stress in S treatments, while mild water stress among the R treatments could not be detected. The NDVI and MCARI1 of the II-S treatment predicted yields better (r2 = 0.65, y = 4.01 tha−1; r2 = 0.70, y = 4.28 tha−1) than of III-S (r2 = 0.012, y = 3.54 tha−1; r2 = 0.020, y = 3.7 tha−1). The use of NDVI and MCARI will be able to predict common bean yields under deficit irrigation conditions. However, remote sensing methods did not reveal pest invasion, so good yield predictions require observations in the field. Generally, a low-flying UAV proved to be useful for monitoring crop status and predicting yield and water stress in different irrigation regimes and sowing period.

AB  - Wild garlic (Allium ursinum L.) has been used as nutrition and medicine for centuries. Although this plant species is a typical spring geophyte that grows spontaneously in moist, steep, shady beech forests, but information on phytochemical and antioxidant properties under various soil types are scarce. This study aimed to assess the phytochemical composition and antioxidant potential of the leaves of A. ursinum grown on different soil types, but under identical climatic conditions of South Banat, Serbia. For the purpose of reproduction, A. ursinum bulbs were collected from two different locations in Serbia and then planted on different types of soil, namely: Arenosol, Fluvisol, Cambisol and Chernozem. Fresh leaves of sprouted plants were sampled at the beginning of spring, morphologically analysed and stoma was counted. The leaf extract was prepared and its phytochemical composition and antioxidant potential were assessed. Regardless of the origin of the reproductive material (bulbs), the leaves of A. ursinum plants cultivated in Chernozem soil had the best morphological characteristics and the largest number of stomata. Phytochemical analyses revealed the following ranges for selected bioactive compounds (expressed on fresh weight, FW): chlorophyll content (289.9-642.4 μg/g for chlorophyll a i.e. 358.2-458.6 μg/g for chlorophyll b), total carotenoid content (TCC, 91.2-263.2 μg/g), total phenolic content (TPC, 1.43-1.98 mg/g GAE), total flavonoid content (TFC, 0.36-1.28 mg/g QE), and total dihydroxycinnamic acid derivative content (HCA, 0.53-0.59 mg/g CGAE). The highest values were obtained on Chernozem (chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and TPC and HCA) and Cambisol (TCC and TFC). Chernozem appeared to be the best soil type during three applied standard antioxidant assays (CUPRAC, TAC and FRP) while DPPH radical quenching assay revealed no significant differences among all examined soil types. Based on the obtained results it could be assumed that Chernozem exhibited the most desirable physico-chemical properties for optimal development of A. ursinum (in particular its green parts) as a source of different antioxidants. Correlation analysis of phytochemical parameters has proved significant influence of total chlorophylls, phenolics, flavonoids and duhydroxycinnamic acid derivatives on antioxidant activity of A. ursinum leaves (unlike total carotenoid content) with the highest correlation between HCA and FRP assay (r2= 1.00). In addition, PCA analysis clearly determined Chernozem type of soil as the best choice for optimal leaf growth and development. © 2023,Journal of Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management. AB  - A field experiment was set up in central Banat, the village of Aleksandrovo, in the period
2017/2018. year. The influence of planting density and size of planted bulb (excerpt) on the
production of onion seeds of the variety „Dutch yellow“ (Stuttgarter Reisen) was
investigated, using four fractions of onions with a diameter: 3-4; 5-6; 7-8 and 8-9 cm. They
were planted in densities of 98,000 to 168,000 plants/ha (A), 140,000-196,000 plants/ha (B)
and 280,000-350,000 plants/ha (C). The harvest of flower stalk (seeds) was carried out on
July 23, when certain measurements were performed, of which we single out here: the
number of flowering stalks per bulb and hectars, the number of fruits in inflorescence, the
number of seeds in inflorescence and seed yield per hectare (kg).
Larger bulbs in all densities had a larger number of formed flower stalks (bulls), and their
number ranged from 1.53 to 3.10. Contrary to this parameter was the number of fruits in the
flower stalks. Accordingly, the highest seed yield was achieved in the densest crops
(1.615 kg ha-1 и 1.591 kg ha-1) by using medium-sized bulbs that were 3-4 and 5-6 cm in
diameter. Dense planting of mother bulbs reduces the lodging of plants, and the competition
caused by that density leads plants for onion seed production to focus their energy on the
growth of generative organs, not leaves.

and flavour which influence consumer preference. Carrot is one of the most important and consumed vegetables in the world, and a critical source of α- and β-carotene. Commonly grown carrot
cultivars (Maestro, Bolero, Natuna and Naval) were obtained from Begeč location in Serbia. Raman
spectroscopy was applied as a fast chemical evaluation tool which provided information about the
carrot cultivars differences. Raman spectra of the root of four carrot cultivars exhibited three
dominant carotenoid signals, mainly related to α- and β-carotene, in the three distinct regions: from
1510-1515 cm-1
, 1149-1154 cm-1 and 1001-1007 cm-1
. According to the PCA of the Raman spectra it is
indicated that the PC1 and PC2 are responsible for 94.06% of data variance and it suggested the
existence of two groups along PC1 axis. Variables with the positive and negative contribution along
PC1 indicate the differences between Maestro and Bolero from Natuna and Naval, which are
mainly based on carotenoids, phenolic compounds and in the lower extend in carbohydrates.

AB  - Cinnamon spice is obtained by peeling the inner bark of an evergreen tree Cinnamomum zeylanicum
(fam. Lauraceae), native to Sri Lanka. It is one of the earliest known spices on the Asian continent.
Today, it is highly valued and widely used all around the world, as a whole (bark sticks), ground
spice or essential oil. Cinnamon has a long tradition of use in cooking (as flavoring agent),
aromatherapy (as fragrant agent), traditional medicine (for treatment toothache, dental problems,
bad breath, diabetes, rheumatism), and is also recognized in official medicine (show antioxidant,
antidiabetic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory activities). The biological activity of cinnamon is
attributed to a number of bioactive compounds, and as the most important stood out
cinnamaldehyde and trans-cinnamaldehyde (Cin). In this study, dry, ground cinnamon was
analysed to determine the content of: total phenolics (TPC), total flavonoids (TFC), total
hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives (HCAs) and total carotenoids (TCC). Bioactive compounds were
extracted by solvent extraction (SE) and ultrasound assisted extraction (USE) in 80% acetone and
warm water (50 °C). The content of bioactive compounds were determined spectrophotometrically.
The TPC in acetone extracts prepared by UAE was the highest (29.83 ± 0.02 mg GAE/g of DW),
but did not show a significant difference in comparison to TPC achieved in acetone extract obtained
by SE (29.79 ± 0.11 mg GAE/g of DW). The highest TFC (1.41 ± 0.17 mg CE/g of DW) and HCAs
(14.59 ± 0.79 mg CGAE/g of DW) were observed in acetone extract prepared by SE, while the
highest TCC (277.10 ± 4.82 μg/g) was acquired in acetone extract prepared by UAE. Also, the
content of tested bioactive compounds of cinnamon in water extracts was higher compared to some
spices described in recent studies, which places cinnamon as a good source of bioactive compounds
with potential health benefits.

AB  - Species of the genus Allium are used for different purposes: as food (vegetables, spices, flavor agent
in the bakery industry), medical agent in folk medicine, and as decorative perennials. Effect of
onion, garlic and leek on human health have been described in many studies. The presence of
compounds with potential antioxidant activity are considered responsible for their health effect.
Other species of this genus have been intensively studied in recent years in order to estimate their
nutritional value and healing effect. In this paper, the antioxidant activity of edible parts of two
Allium species (Allium nutans and A. odorum) was determined, by DPPH. and ABTS..+ scavenging
assays. The tested species were grown in Serbia, in open field conditions and were foliar treated
with selenium fertilizer (Na2SeO4) in four doses (0, 10, 20 and 30 g per ha), in the phase of
intensive growth. Antioxidant activity was determined spectrophotometrically, by reading the
absorbances of the samples at 515 nm in the case DPPH. assay and at 734 nm in the ABTS.+ assay.
The obtained results were expressed as a percentage of inhibition of DPPH radicals and ABTS
radical cations caused by the action of the extract of the tested Allium species. A. nutans had the
highest antioxidant activity in control variant – without Se treatment (23.77% ± 0.19) in DPPH.
assay, and in variant II - 10 g of selenium fertilizer per ha (69.05 ± 6.06) in ABTS.+ assay. The
highest antioxidant activity of A. odorum was detected in variant IV - 30 g of selenium fertilizer per
ha (25.75 ± 0.28) in DPPH assay. In A. odorum there was no significant difference in antioxidant
activity in the control variant (33.41 ± 0.38) and variant III - 20 g of selenium per ha (33.79 ± 0.46),
in ABTS assay.

AB  - In this study, the optimal stratification duration of wild garlic (Allium ursinum) seeds was examined, in order to shorten the period of physiological dormancy. Collected, cleaned and dried seeds were subjected to the stratification method. Apart of the gathered seeds was placed in Petri dishes on dry filter paper, while the remaining fraction was placed in Petri dishes on wet filter paper. The previously mentioned seed placement had undergone treatments during the stratification period of 0, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 weeks. Each treatment contained four repetitions of hundred seeds respectively. Seeds in Petri dishes on dry filter paper had a higher percentage of germination (52%) in contrast to others, placed in Petri dishes on wet filter paper (31%). During the stratification period of 12 weeks, the highest percentage of germinated seeds was attained, as well as the shortest length of the average germination time, along with the highest synchronicity.

AB  - The research was conducted at the end of February 2021 in the Institute for Medicinal Plant Research "Dr Josif Pančić" in Belgrade, with the aim of analyzing the impact of growth bioregulators on the seed germination potential of some medicinal and aromatic plant species. Germination potential of Ocimum basilicum, Levisticum officinale, Calendula officinalis and Coriandrum sativum were analyzed following the ISTA guidelines. The seeds were treated with liquid growth bioregulators Ekobuster 1 and Slavol S for 10 minutes, while seeds in the control were treated with distilled water. Seeds of Ocimum basilicum, Levisticum officinale, Calendula officinalis and Coriandrum sativum treated with three different treatments: Ekobuster1, SlavolS and distilled water, were sown in three different containers. The seeds were sown in styrofoam containers with 160 cells with a mixture of peat moss substrate. The experiment was performed in the laboratory conditions. Containers were placed inside a polythene tent for plant propagation under artificial lighting and kept under air temperature of 23 oC with occasional wetting of the substrate. During the experiment, seedling emergence and development control as well as their pathogenicity control were performed every seven days. There was no occurrence pathogenicity on the examined plants.Based on the obtained results, germination of Coriandrum sativum seeds treated with Ecobuster 1 was 85%, while in seeds of Ocimum basilicum, Levisticum officinale and Calendula officinalis the highest germination was recorded with the use of Slavol S 82.5%, 90% and 82%, respectively; in relation to control treatment

AB  - Alliums are nutritionally and economically important agriculture crops in many coun tries around the world. Edible parts of alliums are widely usein fresh, dried, boiled or 
fried forms, mostly as vegetables or as a spice in salads, dishes, dressings, etc. In addition to 
flavoring properties, they are known as a source ofminerals, sulphur-containing compounds 
and their precursors and otherbioactive compounds (phenolic acids, flavonoids, etc.). The 
benefitial impact of alliums on human health are well explained in the scientific literature 
and are attributed to the rich chemical composition of these plants.Information on the rec ommended daily intakeof this vegetable is important as nutritional parameter.In several 
scientific studies, recommended daily intake of garlic and onionis set on 20 and 50 g, respec tively. The aim of this study was to estimate the daily intake of zinc (Zn), iron (Fe) and seleni um (Se), three important micro/trace elements,by consuming allium spicesbiofortified with 
selenium in different doses (0, 10, 20, 30 g per ha). Edible parts of six allium species (leaves 
of Allium nutans, A. odorum and A.schoenoprasum; whole plants of A. fistulosum; cloves of 
A.sativum var.saggitatum and A. ampeloprasum var. ampeloprasum)which were produced in 
open field conditions, were used for this study. The determination of mineral content were 
performed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES). The 
estimate daily intake of Zn, Fe and Se was calculated on the basis of the above recommended daily consumption of alliums and was expressed as a percentage.The obtained results show 
that, by consumption of all tested allium species,daily intake of Se was the highest compared 
with recommended dietary intakes,compared to Zn and Fe. The highest daily intake of Zn 
(1.30 - 1.42% of RDA per 50 g), Fe (7.74 - 12.28% per 50 g) and Se (2.55 - 372. 64% per 50 
g) was achieved by consuming A.schoenoprasum. The lowest daily intake of Zn (0.57 - 0.61% 
of RDA per 20 g), Fe (0.97 - 1.28% per 20 g)and Se (0.33 - 16. 84% per 20 g) was achieved by 
consuming A.ampeloprasum. In the production of functional food, biofortification can be 
used as an effective method for enriching agricultural crops with essential microelements.

AB  - Spring onions are a popular and very common vegetable in the human diet during the early 
spring months. In the Serbian markets there are an offer of green onion (Allium cepa) and 
spring garlic (A. sativum), while in better supplied markets the assortment also includes A. 
ursinum, popularly known as wild garlic, ramsons or bear’s garlic. In this paper, the influence 
of two extraction techniques, with application of 80% MeOH (solvent extraction and 
ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) on the content of total phenolics (TPC) and flavonoids 
(TFC) in samples of spring onions (A. cepa and A. ursinum) was investigated, with the aim to 
find an extraction technique that would ensure more efficient isolation of these bioactive 
compounds, which would enable a more precise assessment of the quality of the examined 
plants. Total phenolic content (TPC) was determined using the standard spectrophotometric 
Folin-Ciocalteu method. The obtained results are expressed as mg of ferulic acid equivalents 
(FAE) per g of fresh weight. The content of total flavonoids (TFC) was determined by the 
standard spectrophotometric aluminum chloride method, and the obtained results were 
expressed as mg of quercetin equivalent (QE) per gram of fresh weight. The lowest content of 
TPC (0.79 mg/g FAE) and TFC (0.10 mg/g QE) was determined in A. cepa using solvent 
extraction, while the highest content of TPC (4.32 mg/g FAE) and TFC (0.64 mg/g QE) was 
obtained in A. ursinum, by using UAE. Spring onions available in the Serbian market, in 
addition to being popular vegetables, are also a good source of bioactive compounds with 
potential phytotherapeutic effects

AB  - In this paper was examined the influence of organo-mineral fertilizer (OMF) on the quality of 
seedlings of perennial flower species: Gaillardia aristata Pursh (Arizona sun), Delfinium 
elatum L. (Magic Fountains Mix) and Lupinus polyphillus L. (Lupini Mix ApeX). The 
research was conducted during 2021 in the greenhouse of the Faculty of Agriculture, 
University of Belgrade. The paper examines the effect of application of commercial organo mineral fertilizer Fitofert humstart 4:12:5 in different doses: control (without application), 
0.1%, 0.3%, 0.6% and 1.4% on the following developmental characteristics of selected 
plants: plant height (cm), above ground mass (g), number and mass of leaves (g), number of 
flower branches, number and size of flowers/inflorescences (cm). 
The results indicate that with the application of OMF were obtained well-developed plants 
seedlings. The best quality of Gaillardia aristata seedlings was achieved when OMF was 
applied in doses of 0.6 - 1.4%, Delfinium elatum in doses of 0.3% - 1% and Lupinus 
polyphillus in doses of 0.1 - 0.6%. Also, the obtained results indicate the need for further 
research, through the inclusion of a larger number of species in order to find the most optimal 
dose of application from the point of both the quality of produced plants and economic 
viability.

Seasonal water requirements of maize in the region of Vojvodina

AB  - Global climate changes, which are characterized by an increase in temperature, reduction of precipitation, especially during the summer months, significantly affect the overall production of spring sowing crops. Maize is the predominant crop in Serbia. It is grown in about 1 million hectares with average yield about 7,9 t/ha. Precisely for that reason, in this paper, the analysis of water deficit on the maize fields in the region of Vojvodina was performed. The total used agricultural land of the surveyed area is about 1,574,365.71 ha, while the maize grown area occupies about 551,028 ha (35%). A series of meteorological data from the previous 20 years (2000 - 2019) from 7 meteorological stations of the Administrative Districts from the regions covered by the survey were used for the analysis. Evapotranspiration, crop evapotranspiration (maize), effective rainfall and water deficit were calculated using FAO-56 methodology. The amount of water consumed during the evapotranspiration process in the vegetation period averaging about 625.07 mm (from 597.4 mm in the North Bačka District to 646.8 mm in the West Bačka District). Maize has the greatest water requirement during the tasseling and silking phases, in July, when the largest water deficit is observed, which averages 152.51 mm (from 143.6 mm in the South Banat District to 159.2 mm in the Srem District). The seasonal water deficit averages 347.24 mm (from 310.8 mm in the area of South Bačka District to 369 mm in the area of West Bačka District). As the availability of water is a key factor for high and stable maize yields, this research aimed to examine the water requirements in the area where the maize represents more than half of the total production.

Seasonal water requirements of maize in the region of Vojvodina

AB  - Global climate changes, which are characterized by an increase in temperature, reduction of precipitation, especially during the summer months, significantly affect the overall production of spring sowing crops. Maize is the predominant crop in Serbia. It is grown in about 1 million hectares with average yield about 7,9 t/ha. Precisely for that reason, in this paper, the analysis of water deficit on the maize fields in the region of Vojvodina was performed. The total used agricultural land of the surveyed area is about 1,574,365.71 ha, while the maize grown area occupies about 551,028 ha (35%). A series of meteorological data from the previous 20 years (2000 - 2019) from 7 meteorological stations of the Administrative Districts from the regions covered by the survey were used for the analysis. Evapotranspiration, crop evapotranspiration (maize), effective rainfall and water deficit were calculated using FAO-56 methodology. The amount of water consumed during the evapotranspiration process in the vegetation period averaging about 625.07 mm (from 597.4 mm in the North Bačka District to 646.8 mm in the West Bačka District). Maize has the greatest water requirement during the tasseling and silking phases, in July, when the largest water deficit is observed, which averages 152.51 mm (from 143.6 mm in the South Banat District to 159.2 mm in the Srem District). The seasonal water deficit averages 347.24 mm (from 310.8 mm in the area of South Bačka District to 369 mm in the area of West Bačka District). As the availability of water is a key factor for high and stable maize yields, this research aimed to examine the water requirements in the area where the maize represents more than half of the total production.
