AB - The aim of this study was to examine the influence of shoot age on the biological and chemical properties of 13 black currant cultivars with different origins and ripening times. Pheno-logical observations together with examined pomological and chemical characteristics were studied in two consecutive years at the experimental field near Belgrade, Serbia. The total content of phenols was estimated spectrophotometrically by the Folin-Ciocalteu method, while quantitative analysis of anthocyanin and flavonols aglycones was performed using a high-performance liquid chromato-graphic (HPLC) method. Principal component analysis was performed to establish differences in biological and chemical properties of black currants. Three-year-old shoots had an earlier start of all examined phenological stages, better generative potential, higher yields, while clusters and berries from 2-year-old shoots had significantly higher values for physical properties, total phenols, anthocyanin and flavanols aglycones and antiradical capacity. Late ripening cultivars had higher contents of all chemical compounds. The berries on 2-year-old shoots had total phenolics that ranged between 123.0 (‘Titania’) and 298.3 mg/100 g fresh weight (FW) (‘Ometa’), while total antho-cyanins ranged between 398.5 (’Ojebyn’) and 1160.8 mg/kg FW (’Ometa’). According to the obtained results, cultivars ‘Ometa’, ‘Ben Lomond’, ‘Tsema’ and ‘Malling Juel’ can be recommended as the most promising for growing in the continental climate because they stood out with higher generative potential and yield, physical traits of cluster and berry, higher level of primary and secondary metabolites and DPPH activity in their berries.

AB - Research background. Considering the importance of consumption of berry fruits with
proven health-beneficial properties and difficulties in quality control of products of specific botanical and geographic origin, a fingerprint method was developed, based on advanced data analysis (pattern recognition, classification), in order to relate the variability
of nutrients in the selected cultivars to primary metabolite profile.
Experimental approach. Forty-five samples of genuine berry fruit cultivars (strawberry,
raspberry, blackberry, black currant, blueberry, gooseberry, chokeberry, cape gooseberry
and goji berry) were characterized according to chromatographic profiles of primary metabolites (sugars, lipids and fatty acids) obtained by three chromatographic techniques
(high-performance thin-layer chromatography, gas chromatography coupled to mass
spectrometry, and high-performance anion-exchange chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection).
Results and conclusions. Comprehensive analysis allowed monitoring and identification
of metabolites belonging to polar lipids, mono-, di- and triacylglycerols, free fatty acids,
free sterols, sterol esters, mono- to heptasaccharides and sugar alcohols. Chemical fingerprint of berry seeds showed the uniformity of primary metabolites within each fruit species, but revealed differences depending on the botanical origin. All three chromatographic methods provided a discriminative, informative and predictive metabolomics
methodology, which proved to be useful for chemotaxonomic classification.
Novelty and scientific contribution. A novel methodology for the identification of bioactive compounds from primary metabolites of natural products was described. The proposed untargeted metabolite profiling approach could be used in the future as a routine
method for tracing of novel bioactive compounds. The knowledge of metabolite composition obtained in this study can provide a better assessment of genotypic and phenotypic differences between berry fruit species and varieties, and could contribute to the development of new breeding programs.

AB - During the two-year period, the characteristics of one-year-old shoots in 11 promising peach hybrids obtained from the cross ‘Flaminia’ × ‘Autumnglo’ were studied. The analyzed characteristics included: length and diameter of shoot, length of internode, number of flower buds and vegetative buds per shoot, ratio of flower to vegetative buds, number of flower buds per node and 1-m length of a shoot. Most of these characteristics varied significantly between the studied hybrids. The highest variability was found for number of flower buds per 1-m length of a shoot and length of internode, and the smallest for diameter of shoots. The length of shoot ranged from 35.1 cm (hybrid FA1) to 51.3 cm (hybrid FA6). The length of internode was consistent with the length of shoot. The highest number of flower buds per shoot and node was found in FA10 hybrid (36.0 and 1.52, respectively), and the lowest in FA5 hybrid (20.3 and 0.79, respectively). The number of flower buds per 1 m length varied from 57.1 (hybrid FA5) to 96.7 (hybrid FA1). Hybrids with the highest density of flower buds (FA1, FA9, and FA10) were singled out as potentially the most yielding. These hybrids may be of interest for growing in areas where there is a risk of frost and in breeding when creating new peach cultivars of high yield potential. © 2022 International Society for Horticultural Science.
bujnost, rodnost i kvalitet ploda devet sorti trešnje ranog vremena sazrevanja.
zrenja plodova u drugoj polovini maja.
Rozita (1,2 kg), a najviši sorta Merchant (4,1 kg).

AB - Almond production in Serbia is very small. The main reason for this is the frequent occurrence
of late spring frosts during flowering. Present study was carried out to evaluate phenological
characteristics (flowering and maturity times), productivity, and characteristics of the nut and the
kernel (nut weight and dimensions, shell thickness, weight of kernel, kernel share, oil and protein
contents) in 13 almond genotypes of a different origin growing in the region of Belgrade. The
average flowering time was the second half of March and the first decade of April. The
flowering began first in ‛Nessebarʼ, ‛Selection 25ʼ, and ‛Tétényi kedvencʼ (16th of March), and
latest in ‛Francoliʼ, and ‛Texasʼ (29th of March). Beginning of the fruit maturity was recorded in
the range of 13 days, from August 15th (‛Tétényi bőtermőʼ and ‘Tétényi keményhéjúʼ) to August
28th (‛Glorietaʼ). The average productivity was the lowest in ‛Glorietaʼ and ‛Francoliʼ and the
highest in ‛Tuonoʼ. In March 2017 late spring frost that significantly reduced yield in early
flowering cultivars was recorded. Nut weight ranged from 1.95 g (‛Budatétényʼ) to 5.58 g
(‛Marconaʼ). Shell thickness varied from 1.71 mm (‛Budatétényʼ) to 5.06 mm (‛Marconaʼ).
Kernel weight was the lowest in ‛Selection 25ʼ (0.80 g) and ‛Tuonoʼ (0.81 g), and the highest in
‛Texasʼ (1.30 g). Kernel share was the lowest in ‛Selection 25ʼ (16.03%), and the highest in
‛Budatétényʼ (57.93%). Oil content ranged from 44.35% (‛Glorietaʼ) to 57.52% (‛Budatétényʼ),
and protein content ranged from 21.72% (‛Budatétényʼ) to 30.51% (‛Selection 25ʼ). Obtained
results indicate that Belgrade region is suitable for growing of late flowering almond cultivars.

abstract = "Almond production in Serbia is very small.
Obtained
results indicate that Belgrade region is suitable for growing of late flowering almond cultivars.",

AB - This paper presents the results of the two-year (2015-2016) research of changes in fruit quality of quince fruits during cold storage. The investigations were conducted in eight quince cultivars: ‘Vranjska’, ‘Leskovacka’, ‘Morava’, ‘Pazardzijska’, ‘Hemus’, ‘Asenica’, ‘Portugal’ and ‘Triumph’. The fruits of the quince were kept in cold storage with normal atmosphere for five months, from October 20 to March 20, in temperature 0-2°C and air humidity 80%. After this period, changes in fruit quality were determined. The highest fruit weight loss was found in the cultivar ‘Pazardzijska’ (16.33%), and the lowest in ‘Asenica’ and ‘Morava’ (6.66 and 7.98%, respectively). Also, in ‘Pazardzijska’, the biggest soluble solids content (SSC) decrease (14.70%) was determined, while the smallest SSC decrease was determined in ‘Leskovacka’, ‘Morava’ and ‘Portugal’ (below 4%). The total acid content decrease varied from 33.05% in ‘Leskovacka’ to 63.75% in ‘Pazardzijska’. The losses in fruit firmness were smallest in ‘Pazardzijska’, and the largest in ‘Portugal’. The occurrence of flesh browning was lowest in ‘Asenica’ and ‘Hemus’, and largest in ‘Pazardzijska’. Of the investigated quince cultivars, the best results during the cold storage were determined in ‘Leskovacka’, ‘Morava’ and ‘Asenica’, and the worst in ‘Pazardzijska’.

AB - Pruning is the most important pomotechnical measure in intensive sweet cherry cultivation, that significantly affects fruit quality. The objective of this study was to examine the influence of pruning intensity on biological characteristics of sweet cherry trees. The experimental orchard was situated on the Fruška Gora mountain, near Novi Sad, in the north of Serbia. Three sweet cherry cultivars were examined: ‘Burlat’, ‘Carmen’ and ‘Summit’. All cultivars were grafted on ‘Oblačinska’ sour cherry rootstock. Experimental orchard was established in 2012 with planting distance 3.85×2.5 m. During a two-year period (2017-2018) the following characteristics were studied: time of flowering and ripening, trunk diameter, number of spurs tree-1, fruit weight and yield. Pruning was applied in September with two intensities: intensive pruning (IP) and moderate pruning (MP). After pruning, number of spurs tree-1 was counted and calculated in relation to trunk cross-sectional area (TCSA). Number of spurs cm-2 of TCSA in IP variant was in the range of 2.03-2.18, and in MP variant it ranged 3.16-3.45. The results indicate significant effect of pruning intensity on fruit weight. Average fruit weight on IP trees in all three cultivars was significantly higher than on MP trees. Yield was also under influence of pruning intensity, and IP mostly leads to yield decreasing.

AB - Effect of irrigation on fruit quality and yield of Red Cap apple variety depending on crop load were studied. The aim of the paper is to determine how many apple fruits can be left on trees in third vegetation, growth under different irrigation treatments (without irrigation, normal irrigation - control and increased irrigation - double irrigation rate). For the Red Cap variety in the third year after planting, in order to achieve good fruit quality and satisfactory yield, it is necessary to leave a maximum of 25 fruits per tree, or 3.5 fruits per cm2of trunk cross-sectional area (TCSA). Different irrigation treatments have influence on the fruit size, the proportion of first class fruits, as well as the degree of ripeness of the fruits. Increased irrigation during the months of July and August affects these parameters, but to a lesser extent than the crop load. The largest irrigation effect on the increase of fruit size had trees from crop load III, who had 5,5 fruits per cm2 of TCSA. Increased irrigation during July and August had no statistically significant effect on tested parameters on trees that had less than 4,5 fruits per cm2 of TCSA and trees that had more than 6,5 fruits per cm2 of TCSA.

AB - The focus of our research was to evaluate different apples cultivars in terms of their biological properties and bioactive compounds content, and determine the levels of their resistance (or susceptibility) to fire blight. The properties of 10 scab-resistant apple cultivars were examined on the Zica monastery estate (West Serbia) during the period from 2011 to 2015. The biological and chemical properties such as firmness, maturity stage, total soluble solids, total acids, total and reducing sugars, ascorbic acid content and surface blush of apple fruits were monitored. Various phenolic compounds in the tested samples were tentatively identified by LC-MS analyses. A study of generative properties included: number of flowerbuds, fruit mass and width, crop load, yield efficiency and yield. During the period of blooming and intensive shoot growth, artificial inoculations were carried out. For each cultivar, a fire blight score was determined by dividing the average length of necrotic tissue by the average total shoot length. In the study period, the cultivars 'CroldRush' (41.1 t ha(-1)) and 'Florina' (35.9 t ha(-1)) produced the highest yields, and the cultivars 'Discovery' (19.0 t ha(-1)) and Selection 25/63 (15.1 t ha(-1)) the lowest. The cultivar 'William's Pride' produced the largest fruits, with an average fruit mass of 206.8 g. The earliest harvest period was recorded for the cultivar 'Discovery' (end of July), and the latest for the cultivar 'CroldRush' (beginning of October). The cultivar 'Enterprise' had the highest value of total phenols (432.2 mg 100 g(-1) FW), while the cultivar 'Topaz' had the highest value of total flavanols (145.2 mg 100 g(-1) FW). The highest degree of susceptibility to fire blight was found in Selection 25/63, and the greatest resistance was manifested by the cultivar 'CroldRush'. In the five-year study period, the cultivars 'GoldRush', 'Rewena' and 'Enterprise' exhibited better bio-chemical properties and higher levels of resistance to fire blight than the remaining cultivars.

AB - In Serbia, in the majority of sweet cherry orchards, vigorous rootstocks (Mazzard and Mahaleb seedlings and clonal rootstock ‘Colt’) are used. Cherry trees grafted on these rootstocks are characterized by vigorous growth and the subsequent late coming into bearing. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of the combined use of two bioregulators: Prohexadione-calcium and Ethephon on vigor of sweet cherry cultivars. Studies were carried out in a cherry orchard in Grocka (near the Belgrade) on five cultivars: ‘Bigarreau Hatif Burlat’, ‘Sunburst’, ‘Carmen’, ‘Kordia’ and ‘Regina’ grafted on the rootstock ‘Colt’. There were two treatments with Prohexadione-calcium (250 mg/l) and Ethephon (175 mg/l). The first treatment was done when the shoots were 8-10 cm long, and the second one three weeks later. At the end of the growing season were conducted measurements of the following parameters: length of shoots, diameter of shoots, number of nodes per shoot, leaf area, and the number of spurs per tree. All parameters of vigor had less values on the trees treated with bioregulators. Length of the terminal shoots on treated trees was lower by 24-35% comparing to control. In addition, bioregulators influenced significant increase in the number of spurs (by 12-74%) in all tested cultivars, except for the cultivar ‘Burlat’.

AB - This experiment was designed to investigate effects of chemical thinning on fruit set, yield, return bloom and fruit quality of apple cultivars ‘Golden Reinders’, ’Gala Royal Beaut’, ’Red Cap Deliciou’' and ’Red Jonaprince’ in 2014. The orchard was established in spring 2013 with high-quality 2-year-old nursery trees that contained 7 or more lateral branches (except the cultivar ’Red Cap Delicious’). For chemical thinning the following chemicals were used: auxine naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), cytokinin 6-benzyladenine (BA), insecticide carbaryl (‘Sevin’) and photosynthesis inhibitor metamitron (‘Brevis’) and their mix combinations. The most intensive fruit thinning for all cultivars were obtained in treatments with metamitron used either alone or in combination with NAA, and in the combination BA + NAA. Due to the decrease in the number of fruits per tree, in these treatments was recorded the largest increase in fruit weight compared with the control. Application of bioregulators in two-year old orchard depending on the cultivar had a greater or lesser effect on apple bloom in the next spring. Effect of chemical thinning on flowering in the next spring was not significant in cultivars ‘Royal Gala Beaut’ and ‘Red Jonaprince’. In the cultivar ‘Golden Reinders’ number of fruits over 6 per cm2 of trunk cross-sectional area (TCSA) resulted in absence of flowers, while in the cultivar Red Cap that number was 3 per cm2 of TCSA.

AB - The main goal of breeding and testing of rootstocks for sweet cherry is to obtain small and
productive trees and to improve precocity. The objective of this study was to examine the influence
of six rootstocks on vigor and productive characteristics of young sweet cherry trees. The
experimental orchard is situated at the Experimental farm “Radmilovac”, of the Faculty of
Agriculture (near Belgrade). Three sweet cherry cultivars: ‘Kordia’, ‘Karmen’ and ‘Regina’ were
grafted on six rootstocks: Prunus mahaleb L. seedlings, ‘Colt’, ‘Ma×Ma 14’, ‘Gisela 6’, ‘Gisela 5’ and
‘Oblačinska’ sour cherry. During a two-year period (2015-2016) the following characteristics were
studied: scion diameter above the grafting union, rootstock diameter under the grafting union,
length and diameter of shoots, height of the tree and the number of spurs per tree. The results
showed different influence of rootstocks on the tree vigor, spur formation and precocity. The
average diameter of the scion in all tested cultivars was the largest on the Mahaleb rootstock. The
largest average number of spurs per tree in the second year was recorded on cherry trees grafted on
the rootstocks ‘Gisela 6’ and ‘Oblačinska’ sour cherry (28 and 23 respectively). The lowest average
number of spurs (6) was found on trees grafted on the rootstock ‘Colt’.

AB - This paper presents the results of a three-year research (2010-2012) of unusual growth of pollen tubes in the ovary in eight cultivars of quince in two pollination variants (self-pollination and open-pollination). Unusual behavior of pollen tubes growth could be seen in all parts of the ovary, and it was most often manifested by larger or smaller branching and the formation of bundle in the ovary, without signs of further penetration of pollen tubes to the ovule. In addition, in a small number of cases, branching of the pollen tubes, as well as bypassing micropyle and forming swellings at the tips of the pollen tube was noticed. There were also the cases where the pollen tube filled embryo sac forming a bundle in it. The occurrence of unusual growth of pollen tubes in the quince ovary was primarily dependent on the genotype and pollination type. This phenomenon was more expressed in open-pollination than in self-pollination variant in all examined cultivars. Leskovacka cultivar was characterized by the highest percentage of unusual growth of pollen tubes in both variants of pollination, as follows: 13.23% (self-pollination) and 15.89% (open-pollination).

AB - The objective of this study was to determine the fruit characteristics of peach and nectarine cultivars in a new training system (Sloping Leader). High-density orchard (2,800 trees ha(-1)) was established by planting vineyard peach seedlings at a 3.5 x 1 m spacing. Grafting was performed at a height of 50 cm. The central leader was bent at the angle of 65 degrees. The standard experimental plot was planted with nursery trees and two training systems: Fusetto (4x2 m) and Open Vase (4x4 m) were applied. The influence of three different training systems on fruit characteristics of three peach cultivars:. Early O'Henry',. Sunprince', and. Autumn Glo', and two nectarine cultivars:. Stark Redgold' and 'Max 7' was studied during the three-year period (20092011). A small tree spacing reduced fruit size of peach cultivars 'Early O'Henry' and 'Sunprince' and nectarine cultivar 'Max 7'. Unlike, in 'Autumn Glo' and. Stark Redgold' differences in fruit size between training systems were not significant.

AB - The goal of this study was to examine the variability and correlation between vigor, yield and fruit quality components in 'Oblacinska' sour cherry. Plant material used in this trial comprised of 41 genotypes, while the experiment was done in three consecutive years. An important diversity has been found in the set of evaluated genotypes and significant differences were found among them in most traits studied. Observed differences between years of study for almost all examined traits, indicate a high influence of environmental conditions on these parameters. Also, significant positive or negative correlation were found between some properties. Principal component analysis (PCA) analysis suggested that leaf dimension, fruit weight, yield efficiency, vigor and fruit set could be sufficient for determination of genotypes. Cluster analysis (CA) grouped genotypes in two main clusters, with numerous sub-clusters. Genotypes with low tree growth and high yield potential were proved to be interesting for following breeding programs and cultivation.

AB - BACKGROUND: Changes of environmental factors, created under the influence of various shading nets, could significantly affect the biological characteristics of plants grown in such conditions as well as biosynthesis of primary metabolites and ascorbic acid. Five blackcurrant cultivars - 'Ben Sarek', 'Ben Nevis', 'Ben Lomond', 'Ometa' and 'aanska Crna' - were cultivated in the shade of two green polyethylene nets and exposed to direct sunlight during two experimental seasons. RESULTSIn the control treatment, all cultivars contained the highest amounts of soluble solid content and number of flower buds per shoot in both years of cultivation. The bushes exposed to direct sunlight had the highest sunburn damage to the berries and leaves, and loss of yield. The greatest yield loss caused by berry damage in the present study during the experimental period was in cultivar 'Ben Sarek': 9.0% in 2010 and 15.4% in 2011. Growing in the shade of light-green net contributed the highest content of ascorbic acid. Control bushes and those shaded by light-green net had significantly higher radical scavenging activity, with values between 1.15 and 1.22 mg mL(-1). CONCLUSIONPlants shaded by nets in both years of cultivation had lower damage to leaves and berries and percentage of loss of yield, and usage of the net would be economically advantageous to growers. Fruit of blackcurrant cultivars grown in shading conditions still represent a good source of valuable nutritive and biologically active compounds.

AB - One unusual aspect of resistance to sharka (Plum Pox Virus, PPV) has been discovered and studied in plum trees in the six consecutive years. The absence of sharka symptoms in some of primary branches of infected plum trees characterized as resistance. Symptoms appearance was observed and PPV presence was checked serologically by DAS- ELISA test as well as by grafting transmission. That aspect of resistance mainly appears in a portion of the tree crown, i.e. on some primary branches of young plum trees and it is diminishing in following years. That distinct resistance to sharka (PPV) was found in trees of Čačanska rodna, Stanley and Crvena ranka cvs. In selected plum trees in the parts with such resistance no sharka symptoms appeared nor PPV was proved. The absence of sharka symptoms as well as PPV in a portion of a plum tree otherwise diseased by sharka is considered as a sign of resistance. For such aspect of resistance the name “Sectorial Resistance” is proposed. It is continues more and detail research on sectorial resistance of plum to PPV are in progress.

It is continues more and detail research on sectorial resistance of plum to PPV are in progress., Kod stabala šljive sorti Čačanska rodna, Stenli i Crvena ranka obolelih od virusa šarke šljive (VŠŠ, Plum pox virus - PPV) uočeno je prisustvo tipičnih simptoma u određenim delovima krune, a odsustvo u drugim.

AB - The effects of partial rootzone drying (PRD), deficit irrigation (DI) and control irrigation (CI) on fruit quality during storage of 'Granny Smith' apples were studied during a two-year period. Trees were planted in 120-L plastic pots. Fruits achieved earlier maturing at DI treatment, compared with fruits from PRD and CI treatments. Regulated drought has a positive effect on fruit firmness and weight loss during storage. After six months of cold storage, the highest decrease of flesh firmness was found in fruits from CI treatment. Effect of irrigation on changes in contents of soluble solids and total acids during storage were not found. Positive effect of DI on fruit firmness, compared with PRD, was not determined. The weight loss on PRD and DI was similar. Positive effects of DI on fruit storage were not found compared with PRD. Contrary, PRD showed good effects on fruit size and yield, compared with DI treatment.

AB - This paper presents the results of four-year study (2010-2013) of the fruit physical and chemical characteristics of eight quince cultivars in the region of Belgrade. Control cultivar for comparison was ‘Leskovacka’. All cultivars were characterized by significantly higher fruit weight and dimensions compared to the control cultivar. The shape of the fruit of most cultivars was round, which is the most suitable for processing. Most of the tested cultivars has exceeded the control in terms of fruit quality. Among tested quince cultivars, ‘Triumph’, ‘Morava’ and ‘Asenica’ can be recommended for growing in the region of Belgrade.

AB - Creating genotypes that will be characterized by high yields, good quality and other favorable agronomic characters is a major objective of most currant breeding programs worldwide. For easier and faster achievement of these goals and identification of superior genotypes suitable for use as parents in future hybridization programs, study of genetic parameters seems to be obligatory. In this regard, the aims of our study were to estimate components of variability and heritability, and do correlation analysis for yield components in order to determine efficient strategies for improving yield in black currant breeding programs. Significant differences between cultivars were established for all studied traits. A high proportion of genotypic variance was found with bush width, no. of shoots per bush, bunch weight and berry weight indicating that genetic improvement for these traits through breeding was achievable. Opposite, seasonal variance was high for bush height, no. of bunch per bush and yield. The high heritability coefficients (0.80-0.94) detected for all traits studied reflect the close agreement between their phenotypic and genotypic values. Also, most pairs of traits were similarly correlated at both phenotypic and genotypic levels. So, yield was significantly and positively correlated with bush height, no of bunch per bush and bunch weight. These results imply a rapid response of black currants to selection.

AB - The effects of 5 crop load levels (all fruit removed and 10, 20, 30, and 40 fruit per tree) in the second growing year on vegetative growth, productivity, and fruit quality were studied in apple cultivars Gala and Braeburn on M9 rootstock in the second and the third leaf. An increase in vegetative growth was observed on the defruited trees in the second growing year. The highest crop load of 40 fruits per tree reduced average fruit weight by 18.7% in Gala compared to those obtained on the trees carrying the lowest crop load (10 fruits per tree). The reduction in average fruit weight was compensated by the increase in yields. Yield per tree in the treatment with the highest crop load was 2.4-fold higher in Gala and 2.7-fold higher in Braeburn than the treatment with the lowest crop load. Yield efficiency (kg cm(-2) trunk cross-section area) in both tested cultivars ranked the highest on the trees carrying the heaviest crop. The highest crop load in the second growing year did not have negative consequences on the yield and fruit quality obtained in the third growing year.
