AB - Post-anthesis drought affects wheat production worldwide, primarily through the limitation of grain filling. The enhanced remobilization of stem reserves induced by drought can provide considerable carbon sources for grain filling. The aim of this study, which was part of an ongoing wheat-breeding program targeting drought tolerance, was to assess the ability of 20 contrasting common wheat genotypes (2 cultivars, 8 F6:7 families (FAM), and 10 parent genotypes (PAR) used to make the families) to remobilize stem dry matter under water-stressed conditions simulated via defoliation 10 days after anthesis, and to estimate the contribution of stem dry matter remobilization to grain weight. In two-year field trials, the genotypes were scored for agro-physiological and peduncle morpho-anatomical traits. Stem reserve contribution to grain weight per spike was significantly enhanced in defoliated plants but did not differ amongst the groups of genotypes. F6:7 families had higher grain-filling rate and 1000-grain weight but without improvement in grain weight per spike under defoliation compared with parental groups. The total area of chlorenchyma, phloem-area-related traits, and stem reserve contribution to grain weight were positively associated with grain weight per spike under defoliation, whilst in both treatments, the grain-filling rate was determined by stem height. These results imply that the grain-filling rate is a trait desirable for drought tolerance that can be improved during the breeding process. © 2023 by the authors.

AB - A high level of genetic purity in crop varieties must be achieved and maintained for agronomic performance, encouraging investment and innovation in plant breeding and ensuring that the improvements in productivity and quality imparted by breeders are delivered to the consumer. Since the success of hybrid seed production is dependent upon the genetic purity of the parental lines, in this study, the experimental F1exp maize hybrid and its parental inbreeds were used as a model system to examine the discriminative power of morphological, biochemical and SSR markers for seed purity assay. The highest number of off-type plants was estimated by morphological markers. According to the comparison of prolamins and albumins banding patterns of parental and derived F1exp seeds, genetic impurities could not be detected. Molecular analysis detected two types of genetic profile irregularity. Beside its use for verifying varieties of maize, report on umc1545 primer pair ability to detect non-specific bands (i.e., off-types), in both the maternal component and F1exp, which is the first report on this issue yet, strongly supports the recommendation of this SSR marker use for more accurate and time-efficient maize hybrids and parental lines genetic pyrity testing.

AB - Considering the great potential of black soybean seed coat as a source of bioactive compounds, the objective of this study was to investigate the effect of anthocyanin-rich brine from the seed coat on functional properties of pickled baby corn, as well as its sensory properties. Given that the ears of sweet corn, popping corn and semi-flint corn were used for pickling in the pre-pollination phase, the effect of genotype and its growing stage on the chemical composition of Baby corn product was also taken into consideration. The brine of black soybean with a total anthocyanins content of 11,882.9 mg CGE/kg (cyanidin 3-glucoside equivalent) and an antioxidant capacity of 399.5 mmol Trolox Eq/kg determined by QUENCHER method had a positive impact on the functional potential of baby corn products. The content of total anthocyanins in the obtained products ranged from 748.6 to 881.2 mg CGE/kg, the predominant anthocyanin was cyanidin-3-glucoside (184.6 to 247.5 μg/g), while their colour was red. Compared to the commercial sample, baby corn products pickled in the enriched solution had a 26% to 46% and 17% to 26% higher content of total free phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity, respectively. Contrarily, the control sample had higher sugar and fibre content. As established, pickled popping corn had the best sensory properties. © 2023 by the authors.

AB - In order to have successful breeding, it is necessary to introduce new breeding material constantly and to use it through various types of hybridisation to increase the existing variability. Ten (10) lucerne varieties of different geographic origin were used in the study. Six varieties originated from the Republic of Serbia (Kruševačka 22, Kruševačka 28, NS-Banat ZMS II, NS-Mediana ZMS V, Zaječarska 83 and Čačanka 10), three varieties originated from the Republic of Croatia (Osječka 66, Osječka 88 and Osječka 99) and one variety originated from the Republika Srpska (Banjalučanka). A total of 100 seeds per each of 10 (ten) lucerne varieties were placed in Petri dishes to germinate. The dishes were placed in the seed germination chamber with the altering temperature of 20 oС in the dark for 16 h and 30 oС in the light for 8 h for seven days. The first green leaflets of lucerne seedlings (cotyledons) were used for the DNA extraction. The first and the second axes from the principal coordinates analysis accounted for a total of 63.1% of genetic variation, contained in the original dataset. It is clearly observed that the genotype Zaječarska 83 is genetically most distant from other studied lucerne genotypes. These studies confirmed that the observed collection of lucerne varieties is variable enough for the successful breeding process. Using an appropriate breeding model it is possible to breed varieties for certain purposes.

AB - A panel of seven maize inbred lines belonging to Zemun Polje commercial pool were genotypized using SNPs bead chip. 21 hybrids, developed according to the half dialel mating design, were tested in the field together with inbred lines per se. The goal of the study was to determine the genetic distance among seven maize inbred lines and to establish whether there was a significant correlation between the genetic distance among parental inbreds and grain yield, specific combining abilities (SCA) and high-parent (HP) heterosis for the grain yield. The inbred lines ZPL2 and ZPL4 with the genetic distance of 0.487 were the most genetically distant parents, while inbred lines ZPL1 and ZPL2 with the genetic distance of 0.191 were the closest ones. Three subclusters of inbred lines were distinguished in the dendrogram. Inbred lines ZPL5, ZPL6, ZPL3 and ZPL7 were grouped into the first subcluster, while inbred lines ZPL1 and ZPL2, i.e. the inbred line ZPL4 were grouped in the second, i.e. the third subcluster, respectively. The values of the Spearman's rank correlation coefficient between the genetic distance among inbred lines based on the SNP markers, and grain yield, specific combining abilities (SCA) and high-parent (HP) heterosis were positive and statistically significant. The highest correlation coefficient was exhibited between the grain yield and high-parent (HP) heterosis (0.93), and then between the genetic distance and the grain yield (0.92) as well as between the genetic distance and high-parent (HP) heterosis (0.91).

AB - Human health is dependent not just on diet, but mainly on quality of agricultural products as a part of diet. If crops were grown on poorly fertile soils, or they are exposed to severe stresses, lesser amount of mineral elements, particularly essential elements, such as zinc, copper, manganese, magnesium, calcium, iron, and even sulphur, will be absorbed and accumulated, resulting in their deficiency in diets and increased incidence of various chronic diseases. Together with naturally low soil fertility, climate change, intensive agriculture is one of the main contributors of soil depletion. Thus, various long-term strategies, which are sustainable for agricultural plants and soils, at the same time, must be developed. It is of particular importance to increase a level of organic matter, as a source of mineral nutrients from the soil. The application through soil, as well as via plant foliage of various complex and organic fertilizers, containing macro- and micro-elements, and many stimulating compounds, enables better absorption and metabolisation of nutrients required for plants and nutrients essential for humans. Besides, bio-fertilizers, containing beneficial microorganisms have an important role in nutrients mobilization in soils, particularly from poorly accessible forms. Many biofertilizers contain microorganisms that are able to absorb atmospheric nitrogen, thus enriching soil, delivering it to the plants, enabling reduction in amount and costs of nitrogen addition into the soil. Promoting microorganisms are also able to enhance plants ability to absorb water and nutrients by their synergy with roots, resulting in stable and better growth performances of agricultural plants, thus increasing yield and its quality. Some other cropping practices, such as crop rotation, intercropping and use of cover crops, enriches soil with organic matter, reduces losses of nutrients through recycling of harvest residues, therefore increasing soil fertility, as well as quantity and quality of crop yield, at the same time.

abstract = "Human health is dependent not just on diet, but mainly on quality of agricultural products as a part of diet. Some other cropping practices, such as crop rotation, intercropping and use of cover crops, enriches soil with organic matter, reduces losses of nutrients through recycling of harvest residues, therefore increasing soil fertility, as well as quantity and quality of crop yield, at the same time.",

AB - The aim of this study was to observe direct and joint effects of three factors (genotypes, ecological environmental conditions and the applied crop density) on the level of defoliation intensity and yield. Three inbred lines (G) of maize (G1-L217RfC, G2-L335/99 and G3-L76B004) were used in the study. The trials were performed in two years (Y) (Y1 = 2016 and Y2 = 2017) and in two locations (L) (L1 and L2) under four ecological conditions of the year-location interaction (E1-E4) and in two densities (D1 and D2) (50,000 and 65,000 plants ha−1). Prior to tasselling, the following five treatments of detasseling and defoliation (T) were applied: T1-control, no leaf removal only detasseling, T2-T5-removal of tassels and top leaves (from one to four top leaves). The defoliation treatments had the most pronounced effect on the yield reduction in G1 (T1-Tn+1… T5), p < 0.05. The ecological conditions on yield variability were expressed under poor weather conditions (E3 and E4), while lower densities were less favorable for the application of defoliation treatments. The result of joint effects of factors was the lowest grain yield (896 kg/ha) in G3 in the variant E3D1 for T2 and the highest grain yield (11,389 kg/ha) in G3 in the variant E2D2 for T1. The smallest effect of the defoliation treatment was on the kernel row number (KRN).

AB - Savić I., M. Nikolić, A.Nikolić, I. Vico, S. Mladenović Drinić, N. Duduk, S. Stanković (2021). The morfological and molecular identification of Fusarium verticillioides causing fusariosis on wheat grain. - Genetika, Vol 53, No.2, 641-649. During the 2014-2017 period, wheat samples were collected from discoloured spikes affected by Fusarium head blight (FHB) from 20 locations in Serbia. After isolation, fungi were cultivated on potato dextrose agar (PDA) at 25oC for 7 days. Based on the in situ identification on PDA, 36 isolates of the section Liseola were selected for further analyses. The pathogenicity of all isolates was confirmed on wheat leaves. The virulence of isolates was determined by measuring the lengths of spots formed at the inoculation leaf site. In order to prove the presence of the species Fusarium verticillioides, a pair of primers FV-F2/FV-R was used. This pair of primers amplifies the sequence of the gaoB gene, and it proved to be specific for the stated species. Moreover, for the same purpose, a pair of primers VER1-VER2 based on the calmodulin partial gene was used. The reference isolate RBG 1603 Q27 was used as a positive control. The pair of primers VER1-VER2 produced a band of the expected size - 578 bp in 18 isolates, while using FV-F2/FV-R, a 370bp long band confirmed the presence of F. verticillioides in 16 samples. Sixteen out of 18 isolates verified with VER1-VER2 were also identified as F. verticillioides with FV-FS/FV-R. No amplification was observed in a negative control.
