AB - This paper examined the effect of adding the ground defatted apple seed cakes (DASC) to chemical characteristics, colour, antioxidant potential, the textural and sensory quality of wheat bread. Adding 5% and 20% DASC of three varieties of apples (Golden Delicious, Idared and Sumatovka) to the total amount of wheat flour significantly increased insoluble fibre and protein content in the tested bread samples, primarily in the bread sample supplemented with 20% DASC of Sumatovka (7.21% and 15.99%, respectively). The highest total polyphenol content and the best antioxidant potential was found in the samples supplemented with 20% DASC. In comparison, the best sensory characteristics and textural properties were found in the samples supplemented with 5% DASC. The bread samples supplemented with 20% Sumatovka had the highest content of insoluble fibre, proteins, total polyphenol content, antioxidant potential and the lowest change in freshness, while the bread samples supplemented with 5% Golden Delicious had the highest content of soluble fibre, brightness and chewiness. Finally, we obtained enriched bread with proteins and fibre, low energy value, high antioxidant potential, good texture and very acceptable sensory characteristics. The variety of apples and the share of DASC affected the tested characteristics.

AB - The possibility of removal of pharmaceutically active substances, atenolol, diclofenac sodium and salicylic acid, from water solutions using hierarchical form of zeolite ZSM-5 is investigated in this paper. Mesopore formation in ZSM-5 was achieved using alkaline treatment. Zeolitic samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, low temperature nitrogen adsorption, solid-state 27A1 MAS NMR, point of zero charge determination and microcalorimetry - volumetry of ammonia adsorption. Adsorption isotherms of pharmaceutically active substances were obtained and liquid calorimetric experiments were used to evaluate the strength of interactions. The capacity for salicylic acid adsorption measured for the mesoporous sample did not significantly differ from the results obtained for the parent ZSM-5. However, in the case of atenolol and diclofenac sodium, mesoporous ZSM-5 exhibited increased adsorption capacities. Calorimetric data revealed higher heats of atenolol adsorption on mesoporous ZSM-5, compared to the parent. Based on similar acidity and surface charge determined for the two samples, our results show that geometry and dimensions of both zeolite pores and adsorbing molecules play a crucial role in the studied adsorption processes and that tailoring ZSM-5 porosity by desilication can be used to expand its applicability in depollution processes.

AB - The work presented in this paper was dedicated to the investigation of the influence of the alkaline treatment parameters on the formation of mesopores in zeolite ZSM-5, SiO2/Al2O3=50. Concentration of NaOH, temperature and tretment duration were varied. The obtained samples were characterized using low temperature nitrogen adsorption, X ray diffraction and solid state 27Al MAS NMR spectroscopy. Formation of mesopores was found to be a process sensitive to changes of treatment parameters, which can lead to creation of hierarchical zeolites with different mesopore surfaces and distributions of pore size diameters. Also, treatment duration was found to have a lesser influence on the process, compared to other two investigated parameters. Mesopore introduction resulted in partial crystallinity reduction, in all modified samples. No significant buildup of extraframework Al was detected.

AB - The use of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) cryogel as a model hydrogel for iontophoretic transdermal investigations is proposed. Due to the excellent combination of its properties, it could be used for evaluating iontophoretic transdermal delivery of variety of drugs, regardless of pK(a), pH or presence of auxiliary ions. Applicability of PVA Cryogel for drug delivery purposes was compared to those of polyacrylic acid/polyvinyl alcohol (PAA/PVA) and polyacrylic acid/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PAA/PVP) adhesive interpenetrating networks. Swelling properties of PVA Cryogel were shown to be almost independent on pH and NaCl concentration, while swelling of PAA-based gels was significantly affected. Addition of PVA and PVP to PAA decreased swelling degrees and increased adhesivity and compression moduli. Iontophoretic experiments were performed using a donor gel/skin/receptor gel configuration; current density and delivery duration were varied. Dexamethasone sodium phosphate was used as model drug molecule. PVA Cryogel was used for investigating the influence of NaCl concentration, which can alter the amount of current carried by the drug ions and, therefore, the delivery rate. By using PVA Cryogel it was possible to easily determine the amount of drug permeated through the skin into the receptor gel, the amount retained by the skin and the amount remained in the donor hydrogel. Decreasing NaCl concentration in PVA Cryogel resulted in higher total amounts of drug delivered and significantly enhanced drug permeation through the lower layers of the skin into the receptor hydrogel.

AB - Two different ways of extracting antioxidative compounds (including soluble polyphenols) from rusks made from wheat flour with added millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) were compared, i.e., solvent extraction and in vitro digestion. Wheat flour was replaced by millet flour in amounts of 10, 20 or 30 wt. % (per dry mass). Solvent extraction was realized using a mixture of ethanol and water in different percentages, with or without the addition of formic acid. The total content of phenolic compounds (TPC) was determined using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent, while the antioxidative capacity was measured by the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) assay. The efficiency of solvent extraction was enhanced by the addition of formic acid. The addition of millet flour in amounts up to 20 % enhanced the antioxidative properties. It was shown that in vitro digestion was more efficient in the extraction of antioxidative compounds, in comparison with solvent extraction.

AB - The competitive adsorption of aromatic hydrocarbons (benzene, methyl- and ethyl-benzene) and water on FeZSM-5 zeolites have been investigated by means of temperature-programmed desorption coupled with mass spectrometry (TPD/MS). The incorporation of iron in zeolite was done by aqueous ion exchange using dilute solutions of Fe complexes (ferric citrate and ferrous oxalate) and ferric nitrate. Diffuse reflectance UV-Vis spectroscopy and temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) were applied to characterize active sites on investigated zeolites. The existence of different iron species on FeZSM-5 zeolites was revealed. It has been demonstrated that the activity of the Fe exchanged zeolite depends on the iron salt used for ion exchange. The isolated, dispersed ions, which are often considered to be essential for adsorption and catalysis, were obtained with high yield only by ion exchange in the presence of ferrous oxalate. TPD/MS measurements show that aromatic hydrocarbons adsorb on specific, strong active sites in hydrated zeolites. The binding occurred when organic molecules replace water previously adsorbed at the same sites. Benzene showed non-dissociative adsorption/desorption, while new mass fragments were recorded during methyl-benzene and ethyl-benzene desorption implying their dissociative adsorption/desorption on active sites in hydrated zeolites.

abstract = "The competitive adsorption of aromatic hydrocarbons (benzene, methyl- and ethyl-benzene) and water on FeZSM-5 zeolites have been investigated by means of temperature-programmed desorption coupled with mass spectrometry (TPD/MS). Benzene showed non-dissociative adsorption/desorption, while new mass fragments were recorded during methyl-benzene and ethyl-benzene desorption implying their dissociative adsorption/desorption on active sites in hydrated zeolites.",

AB - Two types of zeolites-natural clinoptilolite (NZ) and synthetic zeolite A (A)-were enriched with approx. 0.25 mmol of Cu(II), Zn(II), or Ag(I) ions, and the obtained materials (M-Z) were tested against three different isolates of Escherichia coli. Two isolates were environmental isolates from waters in Serbia whereas the third one was DSM 498. Antibacterial activity was studied in different water media-nutrient-rich media (peptone water), water from Sava Lake, and commercially available spring water. The Ag-containing zeolites showed bactericidal activity in the nutrient-rich peptone water after 1 h of contact. Cu- and Zn-containing zeolites showed bactericidal activity in real water samples. Antibacterial activity of the M-Z decreases in all three examined water media in the following order: Ag-NZ ae Ag-A > Cu-NZ ae Cu-A > Zn-NZ >>> Zn-A, suggesting that mainly the metal type and not the zeolite type have a role in the antibacterial activity. Leaching experiments showed small amounts of the leached Cu(II) and Zn(II) ions, indicating that the antibacterial activity is not due to the metal ions but should be attributed to the M-Z itself. However, leached amounts of Ag(I) from Ag-NZ and Ag-A in peptone water indicate that the released Ag(I) could be mainly responsible for the bactericidal effect of the Ag(I)-containing zeolites. Since no loss of cellular material was found, the antibacterial activity is not attributed to cytoplasmic membrane damage.

AB - Room temperature adsorption of CO and N2O using isothermal calorimetry and in situ FTIR spectroscopy on bimetallic and monometallic forms of Cu, Fe and Mn exchanged zeolite ZSM-5 was studied. The two complementary techniques allowed the assessment of the strengths of interactions as well as the identification of the cations active in adsorption. In bimetallic samples containing Cu, a synergistic effect was observed for CO adsorption, i.e higher strengths of adsorption were detected than for corresponding monometallic samples. Such an effect was not detected for N2O. Furthermore, FTIR measurements revealed that N2O adsorption was somewhat restricted for the cation which was introduced the first in bimetallic samples. These findings imply the importance of the order of cation introduction and the procedure of ion exchange process for the adsorptive properties of bimetallic ZSM-5 and, consequently, catalytic reactions where adsorption of N2O is an important reaction step.

AB - In this study, the adsorption of pharmaceutically active compounds - salicylic acid, acetylsalicylic acid, atenolol and diclofenac-Na onto activated carbons has been studied. Three different commercial activated carbons, possessing similar to 650, 900 or 1500 m(2) g(-1) surface areas were used as solid adsorbents. These materials were fully characterized - their textural, surface features and points of zero charge have been determined. The adsorption was studied from aqueous solutions at 303 K using batch adsorption experiments and titration microcalorimetry, which was employed in order to obtain the heats evolved as a result of adsorption. The maximal adsorption capacities of investigated solids for all target pharmaceuticals are in the range of 10(-4) mol g(-1). The obtained maximal retention capacities are correlated with the textural properties of applied activated carbon. The roles of acid/base features of activated carbons and of molecular structures of adsorbate molecules have been discussed. The obtained results enabled to estimate the possibility to use the activated carbons in the removal of pharmaceuticals by adsorption.

AB - In this work, the values of entropy changes related to n-hexane adsorption onto cation exchanged Y zeolite were calculated from differential heats. Various transition metal cations (Co2+, Ni2+, Zn2+ and Cd2+) were introduced into the lattice of the parent NaY, and the existence of enthalpy-entropy compensation effect related to n-hexane adsorption, id. est, the linearity of -triangle H vs. -triangle S plots was examined. The compensation effect was confirmed for all investigated zeolites. The compensation effect can be comprehended as governed by ion-induced dipole interaction between highly polarizing cationic centers in zeolite and nonopolar n-hexane molecules. Finally, the compensation effect and so the compensation temperature were found to depend on the type of charge-balancing cation (charge, size and electronic configuration).

AB - Besides its importance concerning fundamental studies on gas adsorption in narrow pores, investigation of the commensurate freezing of a fluid within a zeolite is of practical importance in the application of zeolites in the processes of adsorption, separation and catalysis. In this work, the adsorption of n-hexane on HZSM-5 and its transition metal ion-exchanged modified forms was studied at 303 K by means of microcalorimetry. The thermal molar entropies changes of adsorption were calculated and thereby, the freezing-like behaviour of n-hexane inside the structure of the zeolite as a confinement media was noticed. This effect is governed by the attractive interactions between n-hexane molecules and the pore walls, and is influenced by the length of the pores and the nature of the charge-balancing cations. Among the investigated zeolites, a solid-like phase of n-hexane in the pores of zeolites with Fe(II) ions was the most similar to solid bulk n-hexane, while Cu(II) ions contributed to the lowest ordering of the obtained solid-like n-hexane phase.

AB - Clinoptilolite-rich tuff (NZ) from the Zlatokop deposit (Vranjska Banja, Serbia) was studied as a nitrogen carrier for grass production. The mechanism of binding ammonium cations present in aqueous solutions by NZ was examined, as well as the possibility of adsorption of ammonia released in fresh cattle manure during its fermentation. The NH4+ binding from solutions proceeded via an ion-exchange process that followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. Adsorption isotherms studied at 298-318 K followed the Freundlich isotherm equation. The NZ readily adsorbs ammonia liberated from manure and the addition of 10 wt. % of NZ to manure can preserve up to 90 % of ammonia. The potential benefit of this effect was examined in greenhouse pot experiments with Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum, var. Macho) using three different types of soil (silty, clayey and sandy). The zeta potential measurements showed that the stability of their colloidal dispersions differed mutually and that the addition of NZ affected the stability and nitrogen cycling differently. All results indicated that NZ could be applied in grass production.

The zeta potential measurements showed that the stability of their colloidal dispersions differed mutually and that the addition of NZ affected the stability and nitrogen cycling differently. All results indicated that NZ could be applied in grass production.",

AB - The goal of this work was to investigate the relationship between antioxidants' content and the oxidative stabilities of grape seed oils obtained from the Cabernet Sauvignon variety. The samples of grape seed oils were obtained by ultrasound assisted extraction. The time of extraction was varied, while the other relevant parameters: extraction temperature, solvent to solid ratio and sonication power were kept constant. For the sake of comparison, the extraction was also done using the conventional Soxhlet method. For all the oil samples obtained, the contents of total phenolic compounds (TPC), alpha-tocopherol and fatty acids were determined using relevant analytic methods. Importantly, in the present study, the modern analytical techniques for estimation of antioxidant capacity (measuring the chemiluminescence intensity of a luminol-hemin solution) and oxidative stability [differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), coupled with thermogravimetry (TG)] were proposed. The obtained results prove that ultrasonic irradiation enables effective extraction of grape seed oil. It was shown that the extractive yields and the amounts of total phenolic compounds and alpha-tocopherol increase with time of extraction; the optimum time was determined. Results obtained in this work show that, for both oxidative stability and antioxidant capacity, TPC have a more important role then alpha-tocopherol.

AB - The acidity of hierarchical USY, Beta and ZSM-5 zeolites obtained by alkaline treatment was investigated. Samples were characterized by low temperature nitrogen adsorption, X ray diffraction and solid-state (27)AI MAS NMR. Acidity of parent and mesoporous samples was estimated through the adsorption of typical probe molecules - measurements were conducted in both gas phase (microcalorimetry/volumetry of ammonia adsorption, FTIR spectrometry of pyridine adsorption/desorption) and aqueous phase (calorimetry of phenylethylamine adsorption). Quantitative distributions in strength of the acid sites were determined, as well as acid sites concentrations. No significant changes in total acidity were detected for ZSM-5. Acid sites strength was decreased in modified Beta and USY zeolites. The samples were probed as catalysts for the dehydration of fructose. Higher selectivities towards 5-hydroxymethylfurfural were detected for all modified zeolites, compared to the parent ones.

AB - Se(IV) and Se(VI) anions are the dominant species of Se existing in aqueous systems. In this study, the iron(III)-modified natural zeolitic tuff (Fe-CLI) from the Serbian deposit Zlatokop has been investigated as an adsorbent for the Se oxyanions. Fe-CLI shows adsorption activity for both Se(IV) and Se(VI) which decreases with increasing pH. The adsorption capacity of Fe-CLI is found to be higher for Se(IV) than for Se(VI). Kinetics data follow the pseudo-second-order model and the obtained parameters k indicate that the rates of adsorption and desorption are higher for Se(VI). Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) analyses reveal that Se is bound at the zeolite surface forming not only the Se-O-Fe but also Se-O-Si bonds. The adsorption mechanism depends of the type of oxo ions. Samples of zeolitic tuff which contain Se were tested as soil supplements for the cultivation of Pleurotus ostreatus mushrooms. The fungus adsorbed the inorganic Se from zeolitic tuff transforming it to a more valuable organically bound form.

AB - In this study, adsorption of salicylic acid, acetylsalicylic acid and atenolol from aqueous solutions onto clinoptilolite modified with sorbed metallic cations (Cu(II), Zn(II), Ni(II) or Mn(II)) have been probed. Natural clays (kaolin and bentonite, pure or ion-exchanged by octadecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride) have been also probed as adsorbents. The adsorption was studied at 30 degrees C by titration microcalorimetry, employed to obtain the heats evolved as a result of adsorption. Adsorption experiments were performed under the same conditions, the equilibrium adsorbate concentrations were determined by fluorescence spectrophotometry. The maximal adsorption capacities of investigated solids against target pharmaceuticals lie in the range of 10(-5)-10(-6) mol/g. Modified minerals have shown different capacities in comparison with natural ones. The adsorption capacities are dependent on the characteristics of pharmaceutically active compound. The results obtained in this work show that natural materials can be used effectively in the removal of investigated pharmaceuticals by adsorption.

AB - The influence of the alkaline treatment on the acidity of zeolite ZSM-5 (SiO2/Al2O3 = 23, 50 and 80) modified by desilication was investigated. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, low temperature adsorption of nitrogen and solid-state Al-27 MAS NMR. Acidity of the samples was investigated using microcalorimetry-volumetry of ammonia adsorption at 423 K. Acid sites accessibility and intracrystalline diffusion were estimated by the thermokinetic parameter. The desilication process was shown to be Si/Al ratio dependant. Relative enhancement of mesopore surface decreased in the following order of SiO2/Al2O3: 50 >80 >23. Pore size distribution broadened and mesopore sizes increased with increasing Si/Al ratio. For samples with SiO2/Al2O3 = 50 and 80 almost full preservation of acid sites strength and distribution was achieved. Significant alteration of the acidity was found for the mesoporous sample with SiO2/Al2O3 = 23. Thermokinetic parameter values indicate facilitated intracristalline diffusion for mesoporous samples.

AB - In this work, the values of entropy changes related to n-hexane adsorption onto ion-exchanged ZSM-5 zeolites were calculated from differential heats, obtained from microcalorimetric experiments. The existence of enthalpy-entropy compensation effect, evidenced by the linearity of -Lambda H vs. -Lambda S plots and characteristic for all investigated ZSM-5 zeolites, was found. In the case of ZSM-5 structure, modifying the zeolite structure by ion-exchange gives rise to changes in the heats of adsorption and adsorption entropy in the same manner. The factors that can influence the appearance of entropy-enthalpy compensation were discussed. It was found that compensation effect is governed by ion-induced dipole interaction between highly polarizing cationic centres in zeolite and nonopolar n-hexane molecules, and hence, depends on the size, charge and electron configuration of the cation. It was found also that the compensation temperature is in correlation with the number of zeolites' strong acid centres. Contrary to the adsorption of n-hexane on ZSM-5 zeolites, compensation effect was not found for the adsorption of the same gas on faujasite-type zeolites.

It was found also that the compensation temperature is in correlation with the number of zeolites' strong acid centres. Contrary to the adsorption of n-hexane on ZSM-5 zeolites, compensation effect was not found for the adsorption of the same gas on faujasite-type zeolites.",

AB - This work reports results on phenol adsorption from aqueous solutions on synthetic BEA (beta) and MFI (ZSM-5) zeolites, studied by heat-flow microcalorimetry. For the sake of comparison, the adsorption was performed on activated carbon, a solid customarily used for removal of phenol from water. The obtained values of heats evolved during phenol adsorption indicate the heterogeneity of active sites present on the investigated systems for the adsorption of phenol. In addition, the amounts of adsorbed pollutant were determined and presented in the form of adsorption isotherms, which were interpreted using Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Astakov and Sips' equations. The latter was found to express high level of agreement with experimental data. The results obtained in this work reveal that the adsorption of phenol on zeolites depends on both Si/Al ratio and on the pore size. Hydrophobic zeolites that possess higher contents of Si show higher affinities for phenol adsorption. Among investigated zeolites, zeolite beta possesses the highest capacity for adsorption of phenol. The possibility of regeneration of used adsorbents was investigated by thermal desorption technique. It has been shown that in the case of beta zeolite the majority of adsorbed phenol is easily released in the low temperature region.
