AB - The paper explores media representations of Xylella fastidiosa, the bacterium that causes severe plant diseases, using data from online sources in English which reported on the developments in the bacterium spreading and treatment from 2015 to 2020. Two directions of analysis are pursued, the quantitative and qualitative one. Quantitative analysis reveals that the bacterium and its effects are described via the terms belonging to the lexical fields of fear, diseases, change, the supernatural, hostility, destruction, killing and war, with the latter three being the most dominant statistically speaking. Further, qualitative analysis attests that some of these terms are used metaphorically as instantiations of the war metaphor, which is generally effective in communicating the severity of the X. fastidiosa induced diseases and mobilising the necessary support. Based on the results, it may be argued that the language used in the media for describing X. fastidiosa fits into the prevalent “catastrophe discourse”, with the purpose of raising awareness of the gravity of the threat the bacterium poses, as well as justifying the severe measures undertaken to contain it. © 2022, The Author(s).

AB - U cilju osavremenjivanja nastave stranih jezika struke i povećanja motivacije studenata,
stranih jezika struke.
sredstava u nastavi veoma korisna jer pre svega čini nastavu zanimljivijom a gradivo
AB - In order to modernise the teaching of languages for specific purposes (LSP) and increase
the motivation of students, a constant effort is made to improve both teaching materials and
introduce various tools. In this regard, the paper discusses the advantages of using audio-visual
resources for didactic purposes. For this research, a survey was conducted among LSP
practitioners at the University of Belgrade, as well as among second-year undergraduate
students who attended LSP classes at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Belgrade. The
subject of the research is to examine the attitude of LSP practitioners and students of languages
for specific purposes towards the application of these resources in LSP classes. The research
aims to consider the (non)existence of preconditions for the application of audio-visual resources
in the teaching of languages for specific purposes. These results indicate numerous advantages
of the application of audio-visual resources and the need for their application, as well as for
further research in this area. LSP practitioners, as well as students, believe that the use of audiovisual
resources in teaching is beneficial because, above all, it makes teaching more interesting
and the material clearer, and thus motivates students to learn a foreign language for specific
purposes.

AB - Globalisation, networking and growing interdisciplinarity have resulted in the use of English as a global and vehicular language, as well as perceiving the English language as a lingua franca for decades. The influence of English is particularly noticeable in the increased use of anglicisms, not only in everyday speech and writing, but also in professional and scientific literature, especially when it comes to terminology. This study deals with the use of anglicisms in the abstracts of the research articles of the journal Poljoprivredna tehnika for the period from 2002 to 2018. The main goal was to identify and classify the anglicisms in this particular corpus of abstracts, as well as to discuss the (unjjustifiability of their use. It is shown that a considerably larger number of anglicisms belongs to the category of professional lexis than to general lexis. Furthermore, pragmatic anglicisms have been identified as well. In certain cases, there is parallel use of an anglicism and its appropriate Serbian equivalent. The research results indicate the need for the joint work of language experts and experts from other fields, in this case, agricultural engineering, in order to translate technical terms correctly and fit them into the Serbian language.

AB - The paper analyses the concept of intercultural competence and its presence within teaching foreign languages for specific purposes in Serbia. The aim of this study was to investigate the extent of the presence of intercultural competence within teaching foreign languages for specific purposes at non-philological faculties as well as the existence/nonexistence of awareness about this competence and attitudes towards the importance of intercultural competence. In addition to the theoretical analysis of the research problem, this paper presents the results of a survey conducted among lecturers of foreign languages for specific purposes at non-philological faculties of the University of Belgrade as well as the results of a survey carried out among students of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Belgrade. The survey results indicate that there is a developed awareness and a positive attitude towards intercultural competence. The results show that the importance of intercultural competence is recognised by both lecturers and students. It can therefore be concluded that the development of intercultural competence should occupy an important place in the curriculum of foreign languages for specific purposes at non-philological faculties.
AB - Rad analizira koncept interkulturne kompetencije i njenu zastupljenost u nastavi stranog jezika struke u Srbiji.

AB - Bearing in mind the importance of international communication, globalisation, student mobility and employability, the readiness to use language properly in different social and cultural contexts has become a major priority. It comprises a wide array of skills that make up what is known as intercultural competence. It might be defined as a set of abilities and qualities necessary for understanding of and communication with other people, no matter whether they come from different countries or not. This paper aims to investigate the understanding of and attitudes to intercultural competence of ESP students in Poland and Serbia. Since we live in the age of globalisation, it seems it ought to be quite important for all students to become interculturally competent. Therefore, we also attempted to analyse various factors influencing students' attitudes such as their national BACKGROUND: or experience abroad. The results present a set of issues to be addressed by ESP teachers, as well as similarities and differences observed for Polish and Serbian ESP students. The implications for further research as well as limitations of this study are stated.

AB - The increasing use of the English language leads to the need for harmonisation of scientific terminology in the Serbian language. Although scientific areas as well as the language used for academic purposes are considered to be very precise and clear, when it comes to terminology, the situation is far from ideal. As for the Anglicism’s and their translation equivalents, it appears that expert’s use the terms that they regard as the most suitable. Thus, we might find the examples of terms, directly taken from the English language without any adjustment to the Serbian language, translated or partially translated into the Serbian language, at the same time, referring to the same concept. In this regard, we have listed some possible ways of evaluating alternatives (Anglicism/Serbian translation equivalent) relying on existing models. This paper is aimed at examining the attitudes of agricultural experts towards the use of Anglicism’s and Serbian translation equivalents in scientific papers. The results indicate the need for more comprehensive research and teamwork of linguists and experts in certain scientific fields as well as relevant state institutions in order to harmonize the existing terms and reduce inconsistency, imprecision and vagueness of the scientific terminology.

AB - A Moodle platform can be successfully integrated into any course for the purpose of introducing e-learning as well as blended learning. The aim of this paper was to investigate whether students were content with having the Moodle platform as a part of the course English for Specific Purposes. The respondents were the students of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Belgrade. The primary objective of this research was to see whether students find e-learning, and the Moodle course in particular, favourable to their learning. Furthermore, we were also eager to hear about their attitudes towards communication with other students and the teacher as well as about their preferable form and way of learning. Finally, we wanted to learn how their self-assessment correlated with their attitudes towards e-learning in order to reach some conclusions for further research.

AB - This paper studies the adverbial hedges in scientific discourse in the English and Serbian languages which the authors use so as to avoid expressing the full commitment to a particular proposition or to diminish the strength of the statement. The literature lists various reasons for the use of hedges in scientific papers. The aim of this paper is to investigate the use and frequency of adverbial hedges in academic discourse in the English and Serbian languages based on the material of two genres in the field of agriculture. Analysis of the results indicates the differences between the two genres of academic discourse as well as the differences between the two languages in terms of the use of adverbial hedges. In addition, we discuss the implications that can serve as a starting point for future research as well as guidelines for implementing the obtained results in practice.
