AB  - The first few weeks after broilers hatch are the period of most intense bone growthand development, and the time when they are most susceptible to the in fluence ofvarious external and internal factors. Research in the recent decades has focused on theinvolvement of melatonin in bone development during early life in chickens. Melatoninrelease from the pineal gland has a circadian rhythm, with the highest levels circulatingduring the night and decreasing during the light phase of the day. Various types oflighting are used in intensive broiler production. In this study, the effects of melatoninon the tibial structure and growth of broilers were investigated. During the first twoweeks of life, two groups of chickens were kept under continuous light and fed thesame diet, with the experimental group receiving melatonin in the amount of 0.03 g/kg of feed. The results obtained showed that the addition of melatonin in the diet hadpositive effects on the development and growth of the tibia, which was expressed ina signi ficantly greater thickness of the diaphysis and cortical bone of the diaphysis,higher breaking force and higher values of alkaline phosphatase activity. The corticalbone mineral density of the tibia did not differ signi ficantly between the groups ofchicken.

AB  - Intensive broiler chicken production involves different lighting regimes, which affects a natural cycle of secretion of melatonin, a hormone included in multiple physiological processes in a bird's body. This research aimed to determine the effects of dietary melatonin supplementation during the first two weeks of broiler chickens' life, bred under constant 24 h lighting, on their health and some hematological, biochemical, and production parameters. The study lasted 6 weeks. Three hundred and twenty 1-day chickens were divided into two groups (control-C and experimental-M), with four replications and 40 chickens in each replica. In the first two weeks (the first phase of the study), a continuous lighting mode 24L: 0D was applied. Group M was receiving a diet supplemented with 30 mg/kg synthetic melatonin only during the first phase. Group C had a diet without melatonin supplementation throughout the whole study. Melatonin addition had a statistically significant effect (P<0.01) on the mean values of body weight and daily weight gain at the end of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th week. The chickens of the experimental group have had a significantly higher value of the European Production Efficiency Factor (EPEF) (P<0.05). The results presented in this paper indicate a direct benefit in stress relief in broilers and a value of the organism's antioxidant system promotion, manifested by improved production performance and fattening efficiency. © 2022, Ankara University. Influence of litter size on growth and structure of m. semitendinosus in newborn piglets and slaughter pigs

AB  - Modern meat production has to meet the requirements of profitability, while meeting the demands of consumers in terms of meat quality at the same time. Huge scientific work has been done in order to find balance between quantity and quality of meet. Most authors agree that piglets of lower birth weight have less muscle fibers within muscle, grow slower, compensating the muscle growth with increase of muscle fiber diameter and accumulating carcass fat. In recent years, selection in pig production has been directed towards increase of piglet number per litter. Since the inverse relation of litter size and birth weight has been well documented, the purpose of this work was to investigate the possible effects of litter size as a factor on pig growth and m. semitendinosus characteristics. Except the statistically significant difference (p=0,05) in number of primary fibers among piglets from small litter (15053) and large litter (11347), litter size did not influence birth weight, or other observed morphological and histological characteristics of the muscle significantly. Similarly, results of this research show that litter size as a factor did not affect final weight, morphological characteristics or fiber type distribution within the muscle in slaughter pigs.
AB  - Savremena proizvodnja mesa usmerena je na profitabilnost sa jedne strane uz istovremeno odgovaranje zahtevima potrošača u pogledu kvaliteta mesa sa druge. Isrcpna naučna istraživanja obavljaju se u cilju pronalaženja balansa između količine i kvaliteta mesa. Najveći broj autora slaže se da prasad manje porođajne mase ima manji broj mišićnih vlakana u skeletnim mišićima, sporije raste, kompenzujući mišićni porast povećanjem prečnika mišićnih vlakana i deponovanjem veće količine masti u trupu. Poslednjih godina selekcija u svinjarstvu bila je usmeravana u pravcu povećanja broja prasadi u leglu. Obzirom da je utvrđena inverzna korelacija između veličine legla i mase prasadi na rođenju, cilj ovog rada bio je da se prouče mogući uticaji veličine legla kao faktora na porast svinja i karakteristike m. semitendinosus-a. Osim utvrđene statistički značajne razlike (p=0,05) u broju primarnih vlakana kod prasadi iz malog legla (15053) u odnosu na prasad iz velikog legla (11347), analiza nije pokazala uticaj veličine legla na masu prasadi pri rođenju i druge posmatrane morfološke i histološke osobine mišića. Slično tome, ni kod tovljenika nije utvrđen uticaj veličine legla kao faktora na klaničnu masu, morfološke karakteristike ispitivanog mišića ili na zastupljenost pojedinih tipova mišićnih vlakana u mišiću.

Comparison of m. semitendinosus morphometry and structure in gilts and barrows at market age

AB  - The aim of this paper was to investigate the differences in morphometric characteristics and histological structure of m. semitendinosus, between gilts and barrows of German Landrace breed at the end of the fattening period. Morphometric characteristics (weight, length, diameter and cross sectional area) of m. semitendinosus were not significantly different, while gender as a factor influenced the histological properties of this muscle. A very high statistical difference (p lt 0.01) in the total number of muscle fibers in m. semitendinosus was determined, with gilts having a higher total fiber number. The cross sectional area of fast twitch oxidative (FTO) fibers was significantly higher (p lt 0.05) in barrows. Gender did not affect the distribution of different fiber types: in both gender, the most present fiber types (48-52 %) were fast twitch glycolitic (FTG), FTO fibers represented 27-30 % of the total fiber number, while slow twitch oxidative fibers (STO) were the least represented (≈ 20 %).
AB  - Cilj ovog rada je bio da se ispita postojanje razlika u morfometrijskim osobinama i strukturi m.semitendinosus, između ženki i kastriranih mužjaka svinja Nemačkog landrasa, na kraju tova. Morfometrijske osobine (masa, dužina, obim i površina poprečnog preseka) m. semitendinosus, nisu bile statistički značajno različite između polova. Histološka analiza strukture mišića je pokazala da postoje neke razlike između polova. Ukupan broj mišićnih vlakana u m. semitendinosus bio je veoma značajno (p lt 0.01) veći kod ženki nego kod kastriranih mužjaka. Površina poprečnog preseka FTO vlakana bila statistički značajno veća (p lt 0.05) kod kastriranih mužjaka nego kod ženki. Procentualni udeo (zastupljenoost) tipova mišićnih vlakana u m.semitendinosus, se nije značajno razlikovao između polova. Kod oba pola najveći udeo (oko polovinu od svih tipova vlakana) su imala bela brzo kontrahujuća glikolitička (FTG) vlakana (48-52 %). Od crvenih, oksidativnih vlakana najmanji udeo (20.23-20.68 %) su imala sporo kontrahujuća (STO) vlakna dok su brzo kontrahujuća (FTO) vlakna bila zastupljena u većem procentu (27-30 %).

AB  - Herbal teas are an important part of traditional medicine in Serbia. The objective of the present study was to determine the activity concentrations of K-40 and Cs-137 in herbal tea, using the gamma spectroscopy method. The samples were collected during the period 2011-2012 in three mountain regions in Western and Central Serbia. The activity concentrations of K-40 and Cs-137 were found to be in the range of 130-1160 and 0.7-124 Bq kg(-1), respectively. The average annual effective dose equivalents from ingestion of K-40 and Cs-137 for an adult person consuming one cup of herbal tea daily were found to be 588.4-5250.2 nSv for K-40 and 4.0-706.1 nSv for Cs-137. Our investigation showed that the herbal teas originating from Maljen, Zlatibor and Tara mountains are radiologically safe for human consumption.

The effect of raw soybeans in mixtures for laying hens on production performance and the relative weight of the pancreas

AB  - The study was conducted on Isa Brown hybrid hens at the age of 49-57 weeks. The effect of using different levels of share of raw soybean of two varieties in mixtures for feeding hens on egg production, body weight, food consumption, the occurrence of defective eggs, mortality and the relative weight of the pancreas was studied. The possibility of replacing the heat-treated soybean grains, varieties Lana, with reduced trypsin inhibitor (TI) and Lydia with a standard level of TI, with raw soybean grains was examined. The research was conducted on the principle of two factorial experiment 2 x 4 (2 varieties x 4 levels of share of raw grain in the mixture) with a total of 8 diet treatments and 4 replicates per each treatment. In the first 5 weeks of the study, the differences in the number of eggs produced under the influence of tested factors were not significant. Under the influence of soybean varieties, the level of share of raw soybean and interaction of the studied factors showed significant differences (p lt 0.01) after 53 week of age. The use of soy with lower TI in the diet for laying hens resulted in a significantly greater capacity compared to standard variety. The share of raw soybean grains of 8 % in the mixtures significantly reduced the number of eggs laid. The differences in body weights, food consumption, occurrence of defective eggs and the relative weight of the pancreas were not significantly influenced by the studied factors or by their interaction effect.
AB  - Cilj ovih istraživanja je bio da se ispitaju mogućnosti zamene termički obrađenog sojinog zrna, sorte Lana sa smanjenim sadržajem tripsin inhibitora (TI) i sorte Lidija sa standardnim nivoom TI, sirovim zrnom. Ispitan je efekat korišćenja različitog nivoa učešća sirove soje obe sorte u smešama za ishranu kokoši nosilja hibrida Isa Brown na proizvodnju jaja, telesne mase, konzumaciju hrane, pojavu defektnih jaja, mortalitet i relativnu masu pankreasa. Istraživanje je izvedeno po principu dvofaktorijalnog ogleda 2 x 4 (2 sorte soje x 4 nivoa učešća sirovog zrna u smeši) sa ukupno 8 tretmana ishrane i 4 ponavljanja po tretmanu. U prvih 5 nedelja ispitivanja razlike u broju ukupno snešenih jaja pod uticajem ispitivanih faktora nisu bile značajne. Pod uticajem sorte soje, nivoa učešća sirovog sojinog zrna i interakcije ispitivanih faktora utvrđene su značajne razlike (p lt 0,01) nakon 53. nedelje uzrasta. Korišćenje soje sa nižim nivoom TI u ishrani nosilja uticalo je na značajno bolju nosivost u odnosu na standardnu sortu soje. Sa učešćem sirovog sojinog zrna od 8 % u smešama značajno se smanjio broj ukupno snešenih jaja. Razlike u ostvarenim telesnim masama, konzumaciji hrane, pojavi defektnih jaja i relativnoj masi pankreasa koje su se javile nisu bile pod značajnim uticajem ispitivanih faktora kao ni pod uticajem njihovog interakcijskog dejstva.

Changes in body proportion of roe deer with age

AB  - The aim of the present study was to estimate the development of body and some body parts and internal organs of roe deer, from 1 year of age (fawn) to 2-3 years of age (Buck). Average body mass of fawn was 16.6 kg and of buck 26.4 kg. Body mass of buck was by 1.6 times greater than body mass of fawn. Similar growth intensity was established for body parts (thighs shoulders, loin and back). The proportion of parts in body and carcass mass was same in fawn and buck. The mass of internal organs (liver, lungs, heart and spleen) increased with age, but proportion in regard to body mass was same in case of fawn and buck. During the first three years of age, no significant changes in body proportion of roe deer were registered.
AB  - Cilj rada je bio da se izvrši analiza razvijenosti pojedinih delova tela i organa srneće divljači u različitom uzrastu, od jedne do preko dve godine. Utvrđeno je da je prosečna telesna masa lanadi iznosila 16, 6 kg, a srndaća 26, 4 kg. Masa tela srndaća je za 1, 6 puta bila veća od mase tela lanadi. Intenzitet porasta, izražen kroz ovaj odnos, je isti za trup kao i delove trupa (butove, plećke, bubrežnjak i leđa). I kod lanadi i kod srndaća ispitivani delovi trupa imali su jednaku zastupljenost u masi tela i trupa. Masa unutrašnjih organa (jetra, pluća, srce, slezina) povećavala se sa uzrastom, ali se udeo mase unutrašnjih organa u masi tela i trupa srneće divljači nije značajno menjao sa uzrastom. Ustanovljeno je da sa uzrastom od 1 do 2-3 godine ne dolazi do značajnih promena u telesnim proporcijama.
