AB - This study investigates the effects of ultrasound, in combination with chemical pretreatments, on the quality attributes (total phenolic and carotenoid content, antioxidant activity (2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay (DPPH)), ferric-reducing ability (FRAP), CIE L* a* b* color, non-enzymatic browning, rehydration ratio, textural and morphological properties) of red pepper subjected to drying (hot air drying or freeze drying). The fractional factorial design was used to assess the impact of factors. The global Derringer desirability function was used to determine the optimal conditions for the best quality attributes of dried pepper. The drying method influenced total phenolic content, a* (redness), and initial rehydration ratio; pretreatment time significantly affected FRAP antiradical activity, a*, chroma and non-browning index, while pH-value had a significant effect on the texture of dried pepper. Non-enzymatic browning was reduced to 72.6%, while the DPPH antioxidant capacity of freeze-dried peppers was enhanced from 4.2% to 71.9%. Ultrasonic pretreatment led to changes in the pepper morphology, while potassium metabisulfite (KMS) was a more effective additive than citric acid.

AB - Gamma irradiation provides an alternative pathway to conventional gold nanoparticle synthesis because it is simple, fast, and economical. Here, we employed gamma irradiation at low doses (1–20 kGy) to obtain gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) anchored onto graphene oxide (GO) sheets. GO was selected as a suitable platform for the nucleation and growth of Au NPs because of its large surface area and good dispersibility in water due to the presence of polar oxygen-containing functional groups in its structure. Gamma irradiation at all the applied doses led to the reduction of chloroauric acid and the formation of evenly distributed Au NPs at the GO surface, simultaneously causing the reduction of GO and partial restoration of the graphene structure. As-prepared Au NPs have predominately spheric shapes and the smallest nanoparticles were reported for the dose of 1 kGy. The increase in the irradiation dose caused either the growth of larger particles (5 and 10 kGy) or the broad distribution of particles’ sizes (20 kGy). All samples showed a temperature increase upon exposure to 800 nm laser and photothermal efficiency was the highest for the sample prepared at 20 kGy.

AB - To investigate the influence of spinel structure and sintering temperature on the functional properties of BaTiO3/NixZn1−xFe2O4 (x = 0, 0.5, 1), NiFe2O4, ZnFe2O4, and Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 were in situ prepared by thermal decomposition onto BaTiO3 surface from acetylacetonate precursors. As-prepared powders were additionally sintered at 1150 °C and 1300 °C. X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used for the detailed examination of phase composition and morphology. The magnetic, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties were investigated. The optimal phase composition in the BaTiO3/NiFe2O4 composite, sintered at 1150 °C, resulted in a wide frequency range stability. Additionally, particular phase composition indicates favorable properties such as low conductivity and ideal-like hysteresis loop behavior. The favorable properties of BaTiO3/NiFe2O4 make this particular composite an ideal material choice for further studies on applications of multi-ferroic devices.

AB - In this paper, the properties of organic-inorganic hybrid polymer materials, which were synthesized from an aluminosilicate inorganic matrix with the addition of brushite and aminosilane grafted on one side and PEI covalently bonded composites on the other side, were examined. The synthesized organic-inorganic hybrid polymers were examined in terms of a structural, morphological, thermo-gravimetric, and adsorption-desorption analysis and also as potential CO2 capturers. The structural and phase properties as well as the percentage contents of the crystalline and amorphous phase were determined by the X-ray diffraction method. The higher content of the amorphous phase in the structure of hybrid polymers was proven in metakaolin and metakaolin-brushite hybrid samples with the addition of amino silane and with 1,000,000 PEI in a structure. The DRIFT method showed the main band changes with the addition of an organic phase and inorganic matrix. Microstructural studies with the EDS analysis showed a uniform distribution of organic and inorganic phases in the hybrid geopolymers. The thermo-gravimetric analysis showed that organic compounds are successfully bonded to inorganic polymer matrix, while adsorption-desorption analysis confirmed that the organic phase completely covered the surface of the inorganic matrix. The CO2 adsorption experiments showed that the amine-modified composites have the higher capture capacity, which is 0.685 mmol·g−1 for the GM10 sample and 0.581 mmol·g−1 for the BGM10 sample, with 1,000,000 PEI in the structure. © 2023 by the authors.

AB - BackgroundAlthough luteolin has been confirmed as potent anticancer agent, its potential application as therapeutic is limited by its water solubility. To overcome this shortcoming nanoparticle technology approach was applied. Owing to their proven low toxicity and the possibility to be easily functionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNP) were the nanosystem of choice used in this study. Novel luteolin capped gold nanoparticles (AuNPL) were synthesized and their anticancer effect towards human cervical adenocarcinoma HeLa cells was investigated in vitro.MethodsAuNPL were synthesized by reducing chloroauric acid by trisodium citrate with subsequent addition of luteoline during synthesis and their physicochemical characterization was done. AuNPL cytotoxicity against HeLa, human malignant melanoma A375, and normal human keratinocytes HaCaT cells was tested by MTT cell survival assay, and their IC50 values were determined. The capability of AuNPL to induce cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in HeLa cells were demonstrated by flow cytometry. The antioxidant activity of AuNPL was assessed by DPPH· and ABTS·+ scavenging assays. Cytoprotective properties of AuNPL towards HaCaT cells were examined by measuring the physiological and H2O2 induced intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels using flow cytometry. Also, genotoxicity of AuNPL in HaCaT cells was investigated by the single cell alkaline comet assay.ResultsSpherical AuNPL, stable in aqueous solution up to six months at 4 °C were obtained in the synthesis. The selectivity in the cytotoxic action of AuNPL on HeLa and A375 cancer cells compared with their cytotoxicity on normal keratinocytes HaCaT was observed. AuNPL exerted their cytotoxic activity against HeLa cells through accumulation of the cells in the subG1 phase of the cell cycle, inducing the apoptotic cell death mediated by the activation of caspase-3 − 8, and − 9. AuNPL antioxidative potential was confirmed by DPPH· and ABTS·+ scavenging assays. IC50 concentration of AuNPL exerted cytoprotective effect against HaCaT cells by the significant reduction of the physiological intracellular ROS level. Additionally, AuNPL were shown as more cytoprotective towards HaCaT cells then luteolin due to the more successful elimination of H2O2 induced intracellular ROS. Moreover, nontoxic concentrations of AuNPL did not cause considerable DNA damage of HaCaT cells, indicating low genotoxicity of the nanoparticles.ConclusionSynthesized AuNPL showed selective cytotoxic activity against HeLa cells, while being nontoxic and cytoprotective against HaCaT cells. The observed findings encourage further investigation of AuNPL as a promising novel anticancer agent.

AB - To investigate the effect of synthesis procedure and sintering temperature on the functional properties of perovskite/spinel ceramics, BaTiO3/CoFe2O4 composites were prepared by thermal decomposition, coprecipitation, and microemulsion method, and sintered at 1150°C and 1300°C. The phase composition and morphology of as-prepared powders as well as sintered ceramics were thoroughly examined by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The dielectric and ferroelectric measurements were performed in detail. Generally, the samples sintered at 1300°C had better performances than those sintered at 1150°C. The composite synthesized by thermal decomposition and sintered at 1300°C stands out among other prepared BaTiO3/CoFe2O4 ceramics, owing to high stability in the wide frequency range and low leakage currents. The obtained results indicate that such composite might be successfully applied as a functional multiferroic.

AB - The phenolic composition and antioxidant activity of wine and fermented pomace (FP) from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes harvested at three ripening stages were evaluated using LC-MS/MS and spectrophotometric analyses. An investigation of grey mold’s (Botrytis cinerea) influence on wine phenolic content modulation was conducted as well. Finally, the influence of the plant’s ripening stage on the dynamics of the phenolic compounds extracted from wine and FP obtained from fully ripe grapes was evaluated. In this study, the content of catechin, epicatechin, quercetin, and p-coumaric, gallic, and syringic acids was analyzed. Wine and FP were obtained after extended maceration during the spontaneous and inoculated fermentation of fully ripe grapes. When comparing the wine and FP obtained from véraison, fully ripe, and overripe grapes, catechin was the most abundant in wine (40.13 ± 3.25 mg/L) and quercetin in FP (10.96 ± 0.14 mg/kg). A decrease in analyzed phenolic compounds was noticed in wine produced from grapes affected by Botrytis cinerea, and the highest depletion was found for quercetin. The use of a winemaking technique that involved differing maceration periods and inoculation using yeasts as well as spontaneous fermentation significantly modulated the phenolic content of derived wines and FP. The dynamics of the phenolic compounds extracted into wine, evaluated using a principal component analysis (PCA), highlighted contents of catechin and epicatechin. After a decrease in maceration, the PCA revealed a notable content of gallic and syringic acids, as well as quercetin, in samples of FP. This study offers a perspective for future research and the development of functional food with a high content of phenolic compounds originating from red grape products, such as wine and fermented pomace.

AB - Despite presenting a practical approach for the characterization of the environmental risk of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) derived from steel production facilities, the analysis of the spatial distribution of bioavailable PTEs concentrations in the soil is frequently overlooked in the management of polluted sites. In this study, the diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA)-extractable forms of PTEs were investigated in soils surrounding the largest Serbian steel production plant. The correlation and geostatistical analysis indicated their pronounced variability suggesting the anthropogenic origin of most investigated elements, apparently from the steel production facility. The detailed visualization of variables and observations derived by self-organizing maps (SOMs) revealed the homologies in PTEs’ distribution patterns, implying the common origin of some elements. These observations were confirmed by principal component analysis (PCA) and positive matrix factorization (PMF). The аpplied approach supports a comprehensive assessment of contaminated sites' ecological and health risks and provides a basis for soil remediation. © 2023 The Authors

AB - In this study, levan from Bacillus licheniformis NS032 was modified in an aqueous medium by octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA), and the properties of the obtained derivatives were studied. The maximum efficiency in the synthesis reaction was achieved at 40 °C and a polysaccharide slurry concentration of 30 %. Increasing the reagent concentration (2–10 %) led to an increase in the degree of substitution (0.016–0.048). Structures of derivatives were confirmed by FTIR and NMR. Scanning electronic microscopy, thermogravimetry, and dynamic light scattering analyses showed that the derivatives with degrees of substitution of 0.025 and 0.036 retained levan's porous structure and thermostability and showed better colloidal stability than the native polysaccharide. The intrinsic viscosity of derivatives increased upon modification, while the surface tension of the 1 % solution was lowered to 61 mN/m. Oil-in-water emulsions prepared with sunflower oil (10 % and 20 %) by mechanical homogenization and 2 and 10 % derivatives in the continuous phase showed mean oil droplet sizes of 106–195 μm, while the distribution curves exhibited bimodal character. The studied derivatives have a good capacity to stabilize emulsions, as they have a creaming index ranging from 73 % to 94 %. The OSA-modified levans could have potential applications in new formulations of emulsion-based systems. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

AB - Arsenite–humic acid-binding process was investigated using the Isothermal Titration Calorimetry
(ITC). The ITC data were successfully (R2=0.996-0.936) interpreted by applying the MNIS model,
enabling thermodynamic parameters to be determined. The MNIS model was adjusted to the arsenite–
HA binding process assuming hydrogen bonding as the dominant type of interaction in the system.
Negative enthalpy change values indicated the arsenite–HAs binding as an exothermic process.
Negative ΔG values (-(27.85-26.83) kJ mol-1) pointed out to spontaneous binding reaction, leading to
the formation of the arsenite–HA complexes. High binding constants values ((7.57-5.02)105 M-1)
clearly demonstrated pronounced binding affinity. As ΔS values (0.041-0.027) kJ mol-1 K-1) were
apparently positive, but close to zero, and ΔH>ΔS, the reaction could be considered enthalpy driven.
Reaction heats and H values (-(18.96-15.64) kJ mol-1) confirmed hydrogen bonds as the most
ascendant interaction type in the arsenite–HA complex. Thermodynamic and reaction parameters
clearly indicated that arsenite–HA complexes are formed at common soil pH values, confirming the
possible influence of humic acids on increased As mobility, and its reduced bioavailability.

AB - Humic acids, belonging to the humic substances, are the most reactive organic compounds in water, soil and sediments. They are known for their role in processes related to soil structure, biology, and chemistry, as well as for their effects on the behavior of environmental pollutants. The effects of humic acids on the environment are strongly influenced by their composition and structure. Humic acids are
used in various fields, especially in agriculture, environmental remediation and medicine. Agricultural
fertilizers containing humic acids as additives are often used to improve plant growth and soil fertility.
The content of heavy metals, metalloids, radionuclides and various organic pollutants can be reduced
by adsorption, complexation, and redox processes involving humic acids. Owing to the ability of
humic acids to form composites with inorganic and organic oxides, pollutants are adsorbed and

water. Various organic pollutants such as pesticides, microplastics and antibiotics can also be
removed from soil and water by adsorption on the composites or humic acids. Various viruses with
positively charged glycoproteins can be bound by the negatively charged humic acids, defining them
as antivirally active. Currently, the humic acids are isolated from various matrices such as coals, peat
and organic wastes. Due to the increasing requirements for the commercial applications of humic
acids, their production and utilization are significantly important and trendy tasks. The humic acid
production with the higher yield is the focus of research today.

abstract = "Humic acids, belonging to the humic substances, are the most reactive organic compounds in water, soil and sediments.
Owing to the ability of
humic acids to form composites with inorganic and organic oxides, pollutants are adsorbed and
removed from water. In addition, the composites formed exhibit pronounced antibacterial activity in
water. Various organic pollutants such as pesticides, microplastics and antibiotics can also be
removed from soil and water by adsorption on the composites or humic acids. Various viruses with

AB - The need for stable, chemical resistant and conductive materials is on the rise in recent times. Graphene shows promising electrical conductivity and chemical stability, but the production of a continual, conductive layer is limited and expensive. Silver nanowires (AgNWs) are both conducive and economically viable, but they are sensitive to water and oxygen. In this study, graphene oxide (GO) and AgNWs were synthesized and combined in different mass ratios (3:1, 2.5:1.5, and 1:1) to obtain chemically stable composites with improved electrical properties. Composites were reduced using ascorbic acid. With the increase of AgNWs to GO mass ratio, the surface of the free-standing composite film improved: the root mean square roughness was lowered from 376 nm for GO to 168 nm for the composite with the mass ratio of GO:AgNWs 1:1, while the sheet resistance was lowered from 146 × 106 Ω/□ to 4 Ω/□. For the first time, the effects of gamma irradiation on the structure of the composites were studied. Doses of 15, 25, and 35 kGy were applied.

AB - Newly designed mesoporous brushite-metakaolin-based geopolymer materials were examined with an idea for using this material as a potential adsorbent for Pb(II) removal from aqueous solutions. As a starting component for geopolymer synthesis, a natural raw kaolinite clay with the addition of 2 wt.%, 4 wt.%, 6 wt.%, 8 wt.%, and 10 wt.% of pure brushite was used. Phase, structural, morphological, and adsorption properties of newly synthesized mesoporous brushite-metakaolin geopolymer materials were examined in detail by the means of XRPD, FTIR, SEM-EDS, BET/BJH, and ICP-OES methods. The ICP-OES results showed that the synthesized material samples with 2 wt.%, 4 wt.%, and 6 wt.% of brushite possess significant adsorption properties and the mechanisms of the adsorption process can be attributed to chemisorption. The most notable result is that brushite-metakaolin-geopolymer with 2 wt.% of brushite have the best efficiency removal, more than 85% of Pb(II).

AB - The rise of innovation in the electrical industry is driven by the controlled design of new materials. The hybrid materials based on magnetite/nanocellulose are highly interesting due to their various applications in medicine, ecology, catalysis and electronics. In this study, the structure and morphology of nanocellulose/magnetite hybrid nanomaterials were investigated. The effect of nanocellulose loading on the crystal structure of synthesized composites was investigated by XRD and FTIR methods. The presented study reveals that the interaction between the cellulose and magnetic nanoparticles depends on the nanocellulose content. Further, a transition from cellulose II to cellulose I allomorph is observed. SEM and EDS are employed to determine the variation in morphology with changes in component concentrations. By the calculation of magnetic interactions between adjacent Fe3+ and Fe2+ ions within composites, it is determined that ferromagnetic coupling predominates.

AB - Due to the growing number of people infected with the new coronavirus globally, which weakens immunity, there has been an increase in bacterial infections. Hence, knowledge about simple and low-cost synthesis methods of materials with good structural and antimicrobial properties is of great importance. A material obtained through the combination of a nanoscale hydroxyapatite material (with good biocompatibility) and titanium dioxide (with good degradation properties of organic molecules) can absorb and decompose bacteria. In this investigation, three different synthesis routes used to prepare hydroxyapatite/titanium dioxide nanomaterials are examined. The morphology and semiquantitative chemical composition are characterized by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX). The obtained materials’ phase and structural characterization are determined using the X-ray powder diffraction method (XRD). The crystallite sizes of the obtained materials are in the range of 8 nm to 15 nm. Based on XRD peak positions, the hexagonal hydroxyapatite phases are formed in all samples along with TiO2 anatase and rutile phases. According to SEM and TEM analyses, the morphology of the prepared samples differs depending on the synthesis route. The EDX analysis confirmed the presence of Ti, Ca, P, and O in the obtained materials. The IR spectroscopy verified the vibration bands characteristic for HAp and titanium. The investigated materials show excellent antimicrobial and photocatalytic properties.

AB - The emerging threat of bacterial resistance to antibiotics prompts the urgent search for biomaterials for the treatment of infectious disease. Here we report on the synthesis and characterization of a multiphasic nanocomposite comprising magnetic iron oxide and silver nanoparticles. The method of synthesis involved the combustion of a metalorganic complex and reduction of the silver ions that were exchanged and/or adsorbed on the surface of iron oxide. Different physical and chemical treatments coupled to the reduction process, including ultrasound and Lugol's iodine solution, respectively, homogenized the distribution of the silver nanoparticles on the iron oxide phase. Remarkably, using ascorbic acid as a reductant enhanced the magnetic properties of the material as a result of the reduction of the magnetic matrix alongside the silver cations. The treatment with ultrasound detached large amounts of silver from the iron oxide phase and resulted in the lowest amount of silver incorporated in the nanocomposite. Despite that, this treatment led to the highest antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains, indicating that the homogeneity of the distribution of silver on the iron oxide matrix is a more important determinant of the antibacterial performance than the amount of silver incorporated in the material. At the same time, the treatment with Lugol's iodine equally increased the distribution homogeneity, but induced excessive ion exchange and crystal lattice substitutions, thereby adversely affecting the antibacterial performance. This has indicated that the mode of binding silver to iron oxide can compensate for the positive effects of homogeneous distribution with respect to the antibacterial performance.

AB - The main goal of this work was to estimate the influence of carboxyl and phenolic groups, as well as aromatic, aliphatic and polysaccharide components, on the soil humic acids (HA) self-aggregation process. Soil HAs (leptosol and regosol) were separated using base resin getting fractions with different functional group contents. Blocking of carboxyl groups was performed using the esterification procedure to estimate the participation of each functional group in the HA aggregation. The presence of HA structural components was evaluated by potentiometric titration and ATR-FTIR. The aggregation was monitored at pH 3 using dynamic light scattering. Results indicated that the higher group content, the HA aggregation is less pronounced. A significant positive correlation of aliphatic C and aggregate size revealed their dominant influence in the HA self-aggregation. A lower abundance of aliphatic C in HA fractions could be considered as not sufficient to start the process. An increase of aromatic C in esters likely pointed out to its participation in hydrophobic bonding and, consequently, more pronounced aggregation. The relation of HA self-aggregate size with carboxyl and phenolic group, as well as aliphatic C, at low pH, could be considered universal regardless of the structural characteristics of the original or modified HA forms.

AB - Abstract: Nickel ferrite nanoparticles were synthesized via thermal decomposition of β-diketonato complexes of nickel(II) and iron(III). The mechano-chemical activation of the complex precursors was used to ensure the increase in the reaction activity and consequently reduce thermal decomposition temperature. The prepared sample was thoroughly characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, FT-IR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). X-ray powder diffraction and FT-IR confirmed the spinel phase of the investigated powder. SEM and TEM revealed the ultrafine nature of nanosized polygonal particles, with a pronounced agglomeration effect. The capacity for electrocatalytic applications was examined using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Electrocatalytic measurements pointed out that the addition of 5% of nickel ferrite as a modifier to carbon paste electrode caused a current increase and a decrease of the EIS semicircle. Further increase in the amount of the modifier decreased heterogeneity of the electrode surface and served as excellent sensor for the detection of gallic acid in the concentration range from 1 to 10 µM with the detection limit of 0.27 µM. This unambiguously indicated the significant improvement in electrode transfer rate and better characteristics of the diffusion layer. © 2022, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

AB - Since recycled technologies usage is mandatory for environmental safety, and in this regard, it is important to examine new materials that can be used in construction and are primarily produced from fly ash. In addition to characteristics such as hardness and compressive strength, the given materials must also be radiologically and environmentally safe. The main concept of engineered geopolymer gel composites based on fly ash residues is focused on developing binder materials via gel formation processes that can replace ordinary cement materials. This study is unique in researching the potential use of fly ash from the Nikola Tesla thermal power plant in Serbia, where the hybrid geopolymeric materials synthesized from fly ash are experimentally examined with the addition 1 wt% and 2 wt% of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). This paper aims to investigate the structural, morphological, mechanical, and radiological properties of hybrid materials with the addition of PVA and without additive in the period of ageing for 28 days at room temperature. The phase composition was investigated using X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) analysis, while morphological characteristics of these materials were examined using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDS). Vibrational spectra of obtained samples are investigated using diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) techniques. The hardness and compressive strength are also examined, indicating that the 1 wt% addition in geopolymeric matrix results in the best mechanical properties. Radiological measurements of investigated all geopolymer samples show decreasing activity concentrations of radionuclides for 50% compared to fly ash.

AB - Humic substances, including humic acids (HAs), are the most abundant fractions of soil organic matter. Their composition, structure and properties, determined by soil formation conditions, can be used as indicators of pedogenetic processes. In this study, elemental composition as very important part of HAs characterization was determined for humic acids isolated from the soils of Serbia developed under different pedogenetic conditions (Chernozem (CH), Smonica/Vertisol (VR), Rendzina/Regosol (RG), Pseudoglej/Planosol (PL) and Prelazni treset/Histosol (HI) and related to soil properties and origin. Soil samples were collected at 0 to 15-30 cm depth. Soil texture, organic C (soil organic matter for HI), and pH were determined by common methods. HA samples were isolated using a modified IHSS method. The C, H, and N contents of HA samples were determined using elemental analyzer (CHNS 628, LECO Corporation, USA) after drying the samples over P2O5 under vacuum. Their percentages were calculated on the ash-free basis. The oxygen content was obtained as the difference. The ash content was determined by a dry combustion method. The C/N, O/C, H/C and O/H atomic ratios were used as indicators of variations in HA properties as a function of HA origin. Internal oxidation degree (ω) was calculated by the equation: ω = (2O+3N-H)/C, where: O, N, H and C are element contents (atomic %). Elemental compositions of investigated HAs fall within the range of average values reported for soil HAs. According to the humification degree obtained, HAs studied are ranged as follows: CH>VR>RG>HI>PL. Both correlations done (H/C versus O/C and H versus C) separate HAs in three groups: CH and VR - the most dehydrogenated and demethylated, i.e. the most stable; RG - the most oxidated; and HI and PL - the most hydrogenated. HAs elemental composition is related to soil organic C and pH, but not related to soil clay. Internal oxidation degree is used as an indicator of plant residue humification progress. Positive ω values point out well drained soils with prevailing oxidizing conditions and negative values reflect anaerobic soil conditions. Internal oxidation degree values are obviously lower in hydromorphic HI and PL HAs compared to terrestrial RG, CH and VR HAs, but positive values indicate predominance of aerobic under anaerobic conditions in surface layer of hydromorphic soils. Results obtained in this study are in agreement with the literature data, indicating characteristics of HAs as particularly dependant on environmental conditions.

AB - This study aimed to evaluate, in vitro, the antioxidative potential of fruit wines produced from berry fruits (i.e., black chokeberry, blueberry, blackberry, and raspberry), cherry, and apple by different technological processes. For this purpose, the activities of antioxidant enzymes (catalase, glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and superoxide dismutase (SOD)) and malondialdehyde (MDA) content as a marker of membrane damage were determined in wine-treated synaptosomes with hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidative stress. All studied wines induced increased antioxidant enzyme activities and decreased MDA levels compared to hydrogen peroxide-treated synaptosomes (i.e., control). The highest SOD activity was observed in synaptosomes treated with blackberry wine (6.81 U/mg), whereas blueberry wine induced the highest catalase and glutathione peroxidase activities (0.058 U/mg and 0.017 U/mg, respectively). Black chokeberry proved to be the best in lipid peroxidation protection with the lowest MDA value (1.42 nmol/mg). Finally, principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis additionally highlighted a higher antioxidant capacity of wines produced from dark-skinned fruits (i.e., blackberry, black chokeberry, and blueberry). The results suggest protective effects of the fruit wines against oxidative damage, and, accordingly, their promising application as functional food.

AB - Eco-friendly and rapid microwave processing of a precipitate was used to produce Fe-doped zinc oxide (Zn1-xFexO,x= 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15 and 0.20; ZnO:Fe) nanoparticles, which were tested as catalysts toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in a moderately alkaline solution. The phase composition, crystal structure, morphology, textural properties, surface chemistry, optical properties and band structure were examined to comprehend the influence of Zn(2+)partial substitution with Fe(3+)on the catalytic activity of ZnO:Fe. Linear sweep voltammetry showed an improved catalytic activity of ZnO:5Fe toward the ORR, compared to pure ZnO, while with increased amounts of the Fe-dopant the activity decreased. The improvement was suggested by a more positive onset potential (0.394 Vvs.RHE), current density (0.231 mA cm(-2)at 0.150 Vvs.RHE), and faster kinetics (Tafel slope,b= 248 mV dec(-1)), and it may be due to the synergistic effect of (1) a sufficient amount of surface oxygen vacancies, and (2) a certain amount of plate-like particles composed of crystallites with well developed (0001) and (0001x304;) facets. Quite the contrary, the OER study showed that the introduction of Fe(3+)ions into the ZnO crystal structure resulted in enhanced catalytic activity of all ZnO:Fe samples, compared to pure ZnO, probably due to the modified binding energy and an optimized band structure. With the maximal current density of 1.066 mA cm(-2)at 2.216 Vvs.RHE, an onset potential of 1.856 Vvs.RHE, and the smallest potential difference between the OER and ORR (Delta E= 1.58 V), ZnO:10Fe may be considered a promising bifunctional catalyst toward the OER/ORR in moderately alkaline solution. This study demonstrates that the electrocatalytic activity of ZnO:Fe strongly depends on the defect chemistry and consequently the band structure. Along with providing fundamental insight into the electrocatalytic activity of ZnO:Fe, the study also indicates an optimal stoichiometry for enhanced bifunctional activity toward the OER/ORR, compared to pure ZnO.
