AB - The aim of the current research was to assess the effects of the feed additive made of lyophilised melon juice (source of superoxide dismutase, SOD) and inactivated live Saccharomyces cerevisiae (strain R397) cells added to the feed via the product containing high levels of organically bound selenium (source of selenium-dependant glutathione peroxidase, Se-GPx) on the semen quality of bulls in heat stress conditions. The 15 bulls chosen for the experiment were assigned to three equal groups (control-group C; treated group M, given the source of SOD; and group A, treated with the source of Se-GPx). The research was conducted in summer. The activities of SOD and Se-GPx in seminal plasma were determined spectrophotometrically. Computer-assisted semen analysis was done to determine the sperm counts, motility and velocity. The temperature and humidity were recorded with a digital data logger. The average SOD activity in the control bulls was significantly lower than in M (p<0.001) and A (p<0.001), whilst the average activities in the treated groups did not differ significantly (p=0.784). Higher average SOD activity compared to the control in the treated groups showed that both feed additives increased the antioxidative capacity of the seminal fluid. The average GPx activity in the control was significantly lower than in groups A (p=0.001) and M (p=0.005), whilst the two treatments did not lead to significantly different results (p=0.701). The analysis of relations between the activity of each enzyme and sperm motility and progressive motility in each of the bulls failed to detect a significant correlation. The analysis of the relation between THI (temperature-humidity index) and the activity of the antioxidative enzymes revealed that the increase in THI coincided with the decrease in the SOD activity in the control group, but with its increase in the treated groups (p>0.05). In all of the three groups with the increase in THI there was an increase in GPx activity (p>0.05). It can be concluded that in all of the three groups of bulls there was an increase in the activity of both enzymes in the seminal plasma, but the increase was significantly lower in the control. Thus, the antioxidative capacity of the seminal plasma of untreated bulls was proven to be lower in comparison with those of the treated animals.

AB - Depending on the infection level and colony strength, Nosema ceranae, a microsporidian endoparasite of the honey bee may have significant consequences on the health, reproduction and productivity of bee colonies. Despite exerting some side effects, fumagillin is most often used for Nosema control. In this study, in a cage experiment, N. ceranae infected bees were treated with fumagillin or the extract of Agaricus blazei mushroom, a possible alternative for Nosema control. Bee survival, Nosema spore loads, the expression levels of immune-related genes and parameters of oxidative stress were observed. Fumagillin treatment showed a negative effect on monitored parameters when applied preventively to non-infected bees, while a noticeable anti-Nosema effect and protection from Nosema-induced immunosuppression and oxidative stress were proven in Nosema-infected bees. However, a protective effect of the natural A. blazei extract was detected, without any side effects but with immunostimulatory activity in the preventive application. The results of this research suggest the potential of A. blazei extract for Nosema control, which needs to be further investigated.

AB - Calf rearing practices vary in different countries and may be affected by many factors. Poor management is related to diseases outbreak and death in calves. This study aimed to analyze practices in calf rearing and the occurrence of common calf diseases on family farms in two European countries and to examine the characteristics of a farmer and his farm as factors that may affect the way of performing practices related to calves’ health. Area of study: Slovenia and Serbia. Material and methods: For collecting data, the same questionnaire-based survey was distributed among cattle farm owners in Slovenia and Serbia. Main results: The following factors showed a significant influence (p<0.05) on certain rearing practices: farm size (on time for checking calves, milk reheating, and providing rehydration fluids to the calf with diarrhea in Slovenia), specialization of the production (on preventive antiparasitic treatments and restriction of drinking water for calves with diarrhea in Slovenia, and the time for checking calves in Serbia), breeder’s age (on colostrum quality checking in Slovenia), and breeder’s education (on time for checking calves and checking colostrum quality in Serbia). The results pointed out the rearing practices to be improved in both countries, Slovenia and Serbia, such as colostrum management and prevention strategies of calf diseases. Research highlights: Characteristics of the farmer and his farm may affect many aspects of calves’ rearing. Continuous education of farmers and appropriate production planning can contribute to better farm productivity and better health and welfare of calves.

AB - The quality of fish feed and its nutritional value are important for fish production. From an economic point of view it is vital to ensure a cheaper final product while from the nutritional aspects it is essential to fulfill the requirements of fish. The aim of this study was to investigate the digestibility and effect of feed mixtures with different protein content on growth of carp fry. The experiment was carried out at the Laboratory for fish nutrition of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Belgrade, for 90 days. Fish were fed with concentrate mixtures having 38% (A), 41% (B) and 44% (C) of proteins. The bigger share of the protein part in A were plant proteins (PP), in C fish meal (FM), while in B the share of FM and PP was approximately the same. Results showed significant differences between digestibility of different feed mixture. The digestibility of protein and fat were higher in fish fed diets with higher protein content. Digestibility of nitrogen-free extracts (NFE), energy and digestible energy was not statistically significant (p> 0.05) regardless of the level of protein in the diet. The results indicate that the increase in the digestibility of proteins is in accordance with the increase in protein content in the diet e.g. diets with higher content of FM.

AB - The study was carried out to examine morphological and physiological effects of different levels of fat in compound extruded feed for carp. A 90 days experiment was performed in tanks with water flow 0.34 L min(-1), stocked each with 29 specimens of carp, average weight 15.4 +/- A 4.2 g. The fish was fed 3 diets containing 38 % protein and 8, 12 or 16 % of fat (feed L8, L12, and L16, respectively). Body weight gain, specific growth rate, food conversion ratio, feed efficiency ratio, condition factor, liver and intestine histology and morphometry and some blood biochemical parameters were analysed. At the end of the experiment, a difference was established between the fish fed L8 feed compared to carp fed L12 and L16 feed for all growth parameters. For several other parameters, nuclear area of hepatocytes, nuclear/cytoplasm ratio, enterocytes height and intestinal folds' length, a difference between carp fed feed L8 compared to feed L16 was found. The histological analysis revealed that normal structure of the liver and intestine prevailed, but changes were observed regardless of the diet type. In the hepatopancreas, more prominent changes were found around pancreatic tissue-particularly, increased number and size of adipocytes. Although blood biochemical parameters were within normal values, a difference between L8 and L16 diet-fed carp was found for plasma levels of triglycerides and total proteins. According to the results obtained in this study, the best results were achieved using a feed with 8 % fat.

AB - U uslovima intenzivnog gajenja kalifornijske pastrmke (Oncorhynchus mykiss), troškovi ishrane čine 50 do 70% ukupnih troškova u proizvodnji.

AB - This paper presents the results of the application of phosphate glass with the addition of Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu in the production of pepper plants of Capsicum annuum L. The experiment was conducted in the greenhouse of the Faculty of Agriculture in Belgrade during the year of 2011 within the Project TR 34001 'Development of the glass with the controlled release of ions for the applications in agriculture and medicine'. The plants were produced in polystyrene containers and polypropylene pots. The effect of the phosphate glass doses of: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 g/l on the following properties of pepper plants development: height, leaf number, aboveground weight, weight and root length was examined. Research results indicate that the best effect on the examined parameters of the pepper plants development was found in the phosphate glass dose of 1g/l of substrate. The obtained results indicate a need for further research of the effect of the phosphate glass in the production of other vegetable crops, flowers, aromatic, spice and medicinal plants.
Dobijeni rezultati ukazuju i na potrebu daljeg istraživanja efekata fosfatnog stakla u proizvodnji drugih povrtarskih kultura, cveća, aromatičnog, začinskog i lekovitog bilja.

AB - Growth and histology of intestine and liver of carp fed diets with or devoid of fish meal (FM) was studied. Carp were fed four experimental diets formulated to contain 38% protein for 90 days. FM was incorporated at 30% in feed A, 15% in feed B and C, and was completely replaced with a mixture of plant proteins in feed D. Feed C and D were supplemented with methionine and lysine. The results showed that carp fed feed D had the lowest weight gain, length and height compared to the other three diets, whereas no differences were observed between A, B and C for the measured morphometric parameters. Inclusion of methionine and lysine tended to improve SGR of carp fed feed C compared to those fed feed B, but growth rate was lower than carp fed feed A. FCR differed for nearly 90% between the FM rich and solely plant protein diet. No major pathological changes were recorded. At the end of the study shortening of intestinal folds' length was found for all groups, except for fish fed feed D. The height of enterocytes was significantly lower for carp fed diet D compared to other diets. According to the results obtained the best diet is feed A, but feed C with 15% FM and added methionine and lysine represents an acceptable replacement due to its lower price and effect on growth that are the most similar to feed A.

AB - The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of different level of fat in diets on body dimensions and weight gain of carp fry. Fish diets contained 38% protein and 8,12 or 16% of fat. The experiment was carried out in triplicates, (3 tanks per treatment, 9 tanks in total) for 90 days at the Laboratory for Fish Nutrition, at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Agriculture. Every tank has a usable volume of 120 gallons of water and water flow of 0.34 Lmin-1. After adjusting fish to laboratory conditions, every tank was stocked with 29 fish, average weight 15.4 g. Based on data of body length and height of fish, obtained in 30- to daily intervals, statistical analysis showed that there were differences among fish from different treatments. Fish fed diets with 8% fat achieved 46.8% higher weight gain than fish fed with food containing 12% fat and 65.4% higher weight gain than fish fed with feed containing 16% fat. Additionally, fish fed with less fat in diet had a more elongated body form and less pronounced body height as well as lower values for fish condition. Based on obtained results, it can be concluded that the diet with lower level of fat is justifiable to use, both from an economic and consumer perspective.

AB - This paper investigates the possibility and justification of controlled release glass application as a new ecological material in the production of plants-seedlings of French marigold (Tagetes patula L.). During the investigation its influence on the development of the produced plants-seedlings was monitored. The seedlings were produced in poly-propylene containers (speedling system) and poly-propylene pots (pot system). The trial was conducted in the greenhouse at the Faculty of Agriculture in Belgrade during 2011. In the course of seedling production the glass granulation of lt 0.5 mm was added in the following doses: 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 g/l. The results of the research show a positive effect of controlled release glass application in the production of French marigold seedlings, since high quality seedlings were produced justifying its application. The best effect on the analyzed parameters of plant-seedling development was found when substrate was applied in the dose of 1 g/l.

Brew. 116(4), 440-444, 2010 The possibility of producing a beverage by wort fermentation enriched with grape must was examined. Must, from two different varieties of grapes, was added to conventional brewer's wort. The fermentation was carried out using a traditional method for lager beer production with the entire process taking thirty days. Following the fermentation process, a sensory analysis of the final product was performed and the total polyphenol content was determined. The results obtained suggest that it is possible to produce a pleasant beverage with some sensory properties similar to conventional beer. In addition to acceptable sensory properties, this drink was characterized by a higher alcohol (7-7.5% v/v) and polyphenol content.

AB - The success of production in aquaculture depends on the water quality, the fish fry but also on the skillfulness of the producers in achieving a profitable production while applying the most optimal technology. One of the producer's dilemmas, when applying feed, is the dynamics of supplemental feeding of fish. This was the reason for carrying out an experiment at the laboratory for fish nutrition at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Belgrade (Serbia). In three experimental groups, during 60 days, carp weight in correlation to the dynamics of feeding was studied. For the first group, feed was available to fish once a day, during 60 min, the second group had feed available twice a day, during 60 min, and the third group had feed available during 12 hours continuously. The results showed that there was a significant difference in the weight between the three experimental groups. The weight of fish from the first group was 41.47%, for the second group was 50.42%, and for the third 87.79%, respectfully, in relation to the stocking ichthyomass. According to the t-test the average weight of the first and second group was not statistically different but they were very significantly lower from the average weight of fish that had feed available 12 hours daily.

AB - In the era of growing demand for sustainable usage of water, all types of aquaculture systems are under reconsideration. Until recently semi-intensive production was concerned to be one of the least polluting. Nowadays, this fact has been reassessed especially in many countries culturing carp in this way. One of the most significant influences on a fish pond ecosystem in semi-intensive carp production is changing its characteristics by adding low quality supplemental feeding. Therefore, the type of fish feed, its physical and chemical characteristics can considerably change the water quality of a fish pond. Aiming to analyze the effect of commonly used feeds (cereals, pelleted and extruded feed) in semi-intensive production on the water quality, an experiment was carried out at three fish ponds during one production season. Even though the results of physical, chemical and biological parameters showed that there were no statistically significant differences in the water quality between fish ponds with different supplemental feed, looking at the overall picture it could be concluded that the pond that had the lowest quality of feed (row cereals), having high organic mater and chlorophyll a during most of the trial period as well as the specific phytoplankton successions including potentially harmful blue-green alga, had consequently the lowest water quality.

AB - Genoderma lucidum among all other cultivated mushrooms is unique for its medicinal, rather than nutritional value. A woody mushroom for centuries highly regarded in oriental folk medicine in recent years came in to focus of numerous pharmacological and medical researchers. The paper gives a brief overview of the obtained results and state of the art of knowledge about its bioactive components and pharmacological functioning indicating its possible use in brewing as a raw material for the production of beer with improved functional properties. It deals with the procedure for Ganoderma extract production, determination of main bioactive substance contents, procedure for beer enrichment and sensory evaluation of the final products. The consumer's acceptance test was carried out by 105 untrained young subjects. The results indicate that both male and female tasters evaluated the enriched beer similar or even better than initial commercially produced Pilsner beer. Male tasters especially showed great affinity for new sensory properties, particularly the body, liveliness, and taste. Female tasters evaluated both beers quite similarly. According to their opinion, beer with Ganoderma compared with initial beer differs statistically significantly better only by its bodiness.

AB - The paper highlights the facts about the possibilities of improving the functionality of beer with extracts of thyme (Thymus vulgaris), lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) and mushroom Ganoderma lucidum. It briefly summarizes the most important data about possible positive action of moderate beer consumption and the benefits of beer as a base for developing a variety of products with enhanced functionality. It gives an overview about the mentioned herbs and the mushroom, their use in traditional medicine, chemical composition, pharmacodynamic properties and possible benefits from the brewing point of view. Procedures for extraction of biological material, experimental results of antimicrobial properties, antioxidant capacity and sensory evaluation of beer enriched with these extracts are given. Experimental results indicate that commercially produced and bottled pils beer enriched with tinctures of Thymus vulgaris and Melissa officinalis shows improved antimicrobial and antioxidative properties. Ganoderma is particularly important because of its unique functional properties and sensory compatibility with beer. Products obtained like this could fulfill several goals: developing novel beer types, developing products with health-promoting properties that meet market needs and eventually gain new beer consumers. Alcohol content of such products depends on the type and alcohol content of initial beer.

AB - Since the area of the southeastern Srem was extremely endangered by excess water, several drainage water systems had to be built. In order to define the efficiency of the drainage systems constructed in the fifties of the twentieth century, field investigations of the groundwater regime in southeastern Srem were initiated. The very first results have indicated that the groundwater regime in southeastern Srem is very complex. Apart from the influence of the constructed drainage systems, the regime of groundwater depends upon several natural (precipitation, evapotranspiration, hydraulic and hydrological) characteristics of the Sava river, which represent the boundary of investigated area and anthropogenic factors. This paper present the results of analyses of the influence of drainage canal network on groundwater regimes in the catchments of Galovica and Petrac, in southeastern Srem.

AB - In the design of reclamation systems, there are frequent cases of discontinuous measurements of precipitation. As precipitation can have rather non-uniform temporal and spatial distributions the objective of this paper is to identify the main characteristics of precipitation for the region of Southeastern Srem, to calculate the correlation between the data from different gauging stations, so as to be able to supplement the data in the part of the area where the measurements are missing. The precipitation amounts recorded at the study pluviometric stations show a good correlation with the precipitation amounts recorded at the basic meteorological stations both for annual precipitation, and for monthly precipitation. The correlation is the strongest in autumn and winter (up to 0.99), and because of spring and summer storms, often of strong intensity, correlation coefficients are a little lower in these seasons. It should be concluded that there is a very good agreement between the results of: arithmetic mean method - 633.3 mm, Thiessen polygon method 628.08 mm and isohyetal method 632.8 mm. This is explained by the fact that the terrain is flat and that the selected stations cover the area uniformly. The missing data can be supplemented based on regression equations. .

AB - Assessment of water quality at Radmilovac estate near Belgrade that is used for irrigation of cultures and as a water supply for experimental fish farm and hatchery was performed by using aquatic invertebrates (zooplankton and macrozoobenthos) and fish gill histology as bioindicators. Two open wells and a stream were monitored during a three year investigation. A total of 25 and 31 species of zooplankton were found in open wells and 11 and 12 taxa of macrozoobenthos at two sites of stream Sugavac. The saprobity index (S) was used to evaluate the water quality of these four sites. Statistical analysis showed that site S2 was the most polluted, with Oligochaeta and Chironomidae larvae dominating. Overall, beta mesosaprobic organisms have been prevailing at all four sites indicating that the water was polluted at moderate levels. All analyzed fish gills showed predominantly normal structure. Identified histopathological changes of gill structure indicated mild and reparable alterations. The results obtained imply that these water resources can be used as a supply for carp fish farm. We suggest that the type of biological water assessment depends on waterbodies characteristics.

AB - Considerable damping-off of the seedlings of several commercial Apiaceae plant species was observed in Serbia. The infection of a total of 48 seed samples of nine vegetable and spice plants with phytopathogenic Alternaria spp. was established using the deep-freeze-blotter method. Identification of Alternaria species was performed using both conventional methods and PCR. Four different plant-pathogenic Alternaria species were detected in Serbia: A. dauci, A. radicina, A. petroselini, and A. alternata, all of which caused reduction of carrot, parsley, parsnip, and celery seed emergence. Alternaria dauci, A. radicina, and A. petroselini were relatively more aggressive compared to A. alternata. Substantial seed infection levels and strong influence of Alternaria spp. on seed emergence indicated that production of Apiaceae seed needs to be improved in order to obtain pathogen-free seed.

abstract = "Considerable damping-off of the seedlings of several commercial Apiaceae plant species was observed in Serbia. Alternaria dauci, A. radicina, and A. petroselini were relatively more aggressive compared to A. alternata. Substantial seed infection levels and strong influence of Alternaria spp. on seed emergence indicated that production of Apiaceae seed needs to be improved in order to obtain pathogen-free seed., U proizvodnji nekoliko useva biljaka izfamilije Apiaceae, uočeno je intenzivno propadanje sejanaca u Srbiji. AB - The work has examined the influence of slow disintegrating fertilizers' dosages of Scotts (Osmocote Exact) formulation 15:9:9:MgO + Me on quality of Pelargonium hortorum. seedlings. The seedlings of Pelargonium hortorum. is produced in polystyrene containers (speedling system) and polypropylene pots (pot system). During the production of seedlings the fertilizer has been applied in dosages (0, 1, 2, 3, 4g i 5g/l). The results show that the fertilizer's dosage of 3g/l of substrata influences on qualitative properties of Pelargonium hortorum. seedlings.

Sezonalna dinamika zooplanktona se karakterisala dominacijom dve Rotatoria, Brachionus angularis i Keratella tropica i malom Cladocera Bosmina longirostris u sva tri bazena. Makrozoobentos je imao malu gustinu i biomasu, a larvame Chironomidae su dominirale tokom cele sezone.
