Redox-controlled release dynamics of thallium in periodically flooded arable soil

AB  - To our knowledge, this is the first work to mechanistically study the impact of the redox potential (EH) and principal factors, such as pH, iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), chlorides (Cl-) and sulfates (SO42-), on the release dynamics of thallium (Tl) in periodically flooded soil. We simulated flooding using an automated biogeochemical microcosm system that allows for systematical control of pre-defined redox windows. The EH value was increased mechanistically at intervals of approximately 100 mV from reducing (-211 mV) to oxidizing (475 mV) conditions. Soluble Tl levels (0.02-0.28 mu g L-1) increased significantly with increases in E-H (r = 0.80, p  lt  0.01, n = 30). Thallium mobilization was found to be related to several simultaneous processes involving the gradual oxidation of Tl-bearing, sulfides, reductive dissolution of Fe-Mn oxides and desorption from mineral sorbents. Manganese oxides did not appear to have a considerable effect on Tl retention under oxidizing conditions. Before conducting the microcosm experiment, Tl geochemical fractionation was assessed using the modified BCR sequential extraction procedure. The BCR revealed a majority of Tl in the residual fraction (77.7%), followed by reducible (13.3%) and oxidizable fractions (5.9%). By generating high levels of Tl toxicity at low doses, Ti released under oxidizing conditions may pose an environmental threat. In the future, similar studies should be conducted on various soils along with a determination of the Tl species and monitoring of the Tl content in plants to achieve more detailed insight into soluble Tl behavior.

Levels of macro and trace elements in vegetable crops as influenced by metallurgical slag addition to marginal soil

AB  - Through the vegetative experiments performed in semi-controlled conditions the influence of calcium containing metallurgical slag, a by-product from the Steel factory, as well as the effects of selected commercial lime materials and fertilizers, on macro (N, P, K, Ca, Mg) and trace elements (Fe, Zn, Cu, Cd) content in common spinach, cabbage and radicchio grown on Stagnosol (a soil with high acidity), was studied. P was determined by spectrophotometer, K-by flame emission photometry and N-using elemental CNS analyzer Vario EL III. In the determination of Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, Cu and Cd, atomic absorption spectrometry was used. The results of the paper indicate that all lime materials studied, along with the studied metallurgical slag, showed positive effects on the content of main and beneficial biogenic macroelements in aboveground biomass of the tested vegetables. There is a noticeably tendency of a little increase in the content of P in all tested plants and Ca in spinach and cabbage in the treatment with mineral fertilizer, manure and metallurgical slag in relation to the control. Regarding the concentration of trace metals in tested vegetables, there was not found higher accumulation of Fe in tested plants in the treatments where metallurgical slag was applied in spite of its significant content in this liming material. As for Cd, its concentrations were within the safety limits and allowed concentrations in all the treatments, which is a highly desirable outcome.

Assessment of quality seeds introduced genotypes of basil (Ocimum basilicum L.)

AB  - Furthermore, mycobiota was identified on the seed. All examined genotypes were characterized by high average values for seed germination. The highest average seed germination was determined in the genotyp Siam queen and amounts to 96.8%. The greatest mass of 1000 seeds was determined in genotyp Genovese it was 1.75g. The seed of examined populations is characterized by high content of fatty oil. The greatest content was recorded in genotype Lattuga and it was 20,33%. The analysis of seed dimensions established significant differences between average values for length, width and thickness, i.e. plumpness of seeds. Genotype Genovese is was characterized by largest seeds. Four fungi genders were isolated and identified on the seed. Species from Alternaria gender were identified in the seed samples of all examined basil genotypes. Species from Penicillium and Gonatobotrys genus were isolated from the sample of seeds of one genotypes. In a sample of semen from two genotypes were identified fungi of the genus Cladosporium.
AB  - U radu je izvršena ocena kvaliteta semena introdukovanih genotipova bosiljka. Analizirani su sledeći parametri: energija klijanja, ukupna klijavost, masa 1000 semena, sadržaj masnog ulja u semenu i krupnoća semena (dužina, širina i debljina). Takođe, identifikovana je i mikobiotana semenu. Svi ispitivani genotipovi se odlikuju visokim prosečnim vrednostima klijavosti semena. Najveća prosečna klijavost semena utvrđena je kod genotipa Siam queen (96,8%). Kod genotipa Genovese utvrđena je najveća masa 1000 semena (1,75g).Seme ispitivanih populacija karakteriše se i visokim sadržajem masnog ulja. Najveći sadržaj je zabeležen kod genotipa Lattuga (20,33%). Analizom dimenzija semena utvrđene su značajne razlike prosečnih vrednosti za dužinu, širinu i debljinu, odnosno krupnoću semena.Genotip Genovese se odlikuje najkrupnijim semenom.Na semenu je izolovano i identifikovano četiri različitih rodova gljiva.U uzorcima semena svih ispitivanih genotipova bosiljka identifikovane su vrste iz roda Alternaria.Vrste iz roda Penicilliumi Gonatobotryssu izolovane iz uzoraka semena jednog genotipa.U uzorku semena dva genotipa je identifikovana gljiva iz roda Cladosporium.

AB  - Market significance of cucumber for fresh consumption and the new technology of growing make it one of the most attractive vegetable variety. Interest of producers is higher every day, while the selection of new varieties is very low. The aim of this research was the selection of cucumber intended for fresh consumption with good agronomic traits intended for growing in the greenhouses and in the open field. The researchers of the Institute for Vegetable Crops, Smederevska Palanka created new cucumber hybrid which was recognized by Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Water Management of the Republic of Serbia, Department for Plant protection in 2013, under the name 'Kralj'.
AB  - Tržišna značajnost salatnog krastavca i nove tehnologije gajenja čine da on postaje jedna od najatraktivnijih povrtarskih vrsta. Zainteresovanost proizvođača je sve veća a domaća selekcija sorata na ovoj povrtarskoj vrsti je jako oskudna. Cilj ovog istraživanja je selekcija salatnog krastavca sa dobrim agronomskim osobinama namenjenog za gajenje u zaštićenom prostoru i na otvorenom polju. Novi hibrid salatnog krastavca Kralj, kreiran je u Institutu za povrtarstvo, Smederevska Palanka. Hibrid je priznat kod MPVŠ, RS, Uprava za zaštitu bilja, 2013 godine pod nazivom Kralj.

AB  - Until now the production of sage nursery production in warm beds has been meeting the needs with regard to the herb. However, the ever-increasing interest for the plant has initiated the need to enhance the technology of seedling production. Container nursery production being intensive has a number of advantages and is used in both vegetable and flower production. The "speedling system", i.e. the system of polystyrene containers with pots of different volumes for substrate and seed sowing is known to be the most rational and practical container production system. The objective of the study was to develop a model for sage nursery production production under controlled conditions using containers of various sizes. The sage nursery production was analyzed with respect to its growing under field conditions and consumption as a fresh spice. The seedlings were grown in containers of seven different sizes. The most favourable sage nursery production quality for field production was obtained in the largest sized containers cells 76 cm3.The highest sage fresh weight yield per m2 was obtained in 22 cm3 cell containers.
AB  - Dosadašnja proizvodnja rasada žalfije u toplim i hladnim lejama zadovoljavala je postojeće potrebe za ovom biljnom vrstom. Povećanjem interesa za žalfijom nameće se potreba intenziviranja proizvodnje rasada. Kontejnerska proizvodnja rasada ima brojne prednosti u odnosu na klasičnu proizvodnju. Kao najracionalniji i najpraktičniji sistem kontejnerske proizvodnje pokazao se "speedling sistem", odnosno sistem polistirenskih (polipropilenskih) kontejnera sa ćelijama različite zapremine. Cilj ovog rada je određivanje najpovoljnijeg modela proizvodnje rasada žalfije u stakleniku korišćenjem kontejnera sa različitim zapreminama ćelija. Rasad žalfije je proizveden u sedam različitih kontejnera. Analizirani su sledeći parametri kvaliteta rasada žalfije: visina biljke, broj listova, masa biljke, masa korena i ukupna produkcija sveže mase žalfije po jedinici površine. Najbolji kvalitet rasada žalfije dobijen je proizvodnjom u kontejnerima sa najvećom zapreminom ćelije 76 cm3. Najveći prinos sveže mase žalfije po jedinici površine dobijen je proizvodnjom u kontejnerima sa zapreminom ćelije od 22 cm3.

AB  - The aim of this study was to determine the effect of height of the first fertile floor on the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of soybean seeds. For qualitative traits the focus was on the energy of germination and seed germination of the studied genotypes investigated per soybean plant and the first fertile floor of the plant. Results of research indicated that there were significant differences between genotypes observed by morphological characteristics (plant height, height of first fertile floor, number of fertile floors, number of pods and seeds, seed weight, etc.) as well as qualitative properties (energy of germination and seed germination). Cultivar Gorštak, with genetically incorporated height of the first fertile floor (12.38 cm), was superior to other two genotypes. A similar trend was found in other morphological analyses. Based on energy of germination and seed germination of all fertile floors per plant, there were no significant differences between soybean genotypes. However, of paramount importance are the established values of these parameters relevant to the first fertile floor. Cultivar Gorštak had significantly higher energy of germination (90.46%) and total germination (91.00%) compared to the other two genotypes.
AB  - Cilj istraživanja bio je utvrđivanje uticaja visine PRVE rodne etaže na kvalitativno-kvantitativna svojstva semena soje. Kod kvalitativnih svojstava akcenat je stavljen na energiju klijanja i ukupnu klijavost semena istraživanih genotipova posebno po biljci i prvoj rodnoj etaži. Sumiranjem rezultata istraživanja, utvrđene su značajne razlike između genotipova, posmatrano po morfološkim karakteristikama (visina biljaka, visina prve rodne etaže, broj rodnih etaža, broj mahuna i semena, masa semena i dr) kao i kod kvalitativnih svojstava - energije klijanja i ukupna klijavost semena. Sorta Gorštak sa genetički inkorporiranom visokom prvom rodnom etažom (12,38 cm) bila je dominantna u odnosu na druga dva genotipa. Sličan trend je utvrđen i kod drugih morfoloških analiza. Energija klijanja i ukupna klijavost semena svih rodnih etaža, posmatrano po genotipovima, nije pokazala značajne razlike. Međutim, od izuzetnog značaja su utvrđene vrednosti ovih parametara kada je reč o prvoj rodnoj etaži. Sorta Gorštak imala je vrlo značajnu veću vrednost energije klijanja (90,46%) kao i ukupnu klijavost semena (91,00 %) u odnosu na druga dva genotipa.

AB  - We have studied the effect of nitrogen supply on growth as well as relation on adaptation to light interception of leek (Allium porrum L.,) hybrid Alita, genotype of known genetic BACKGROUND: . During the vegetative and generative plant growth phases, besides genetic potential many factors affect their productivity. The aim was to investigate genome expression dependent on nitrogen nutrition and light interception. Nitrogen in correlation with light availability has important effect on the growth of plants and the formation of leaf area, what it is necessary for yield of dry matter. Investigation has been done in open field grown leek commercial hybrid Alita (Allium porrum L.,) to consider the way of its genotype response to correlation of light interception and nitrogen nutrition. Investigated traits are leek crop productivity, light interception and chemical analyses of plants. Leek crop productivity was determined through the dry matter production, leaf area development and light interception. Analyses of leek plants comprehended chemical determination and calculation of total nitrogen concentration, nitrogen critical concentration in dry matter, nitrogen demand and, nitrogen uptake in leek crop. Correlation among investigated parameters was assigned to comprehensive hypothetical model of growth and productivity of leek crop grown at open field.It was shown that for nitrogen uptake (Nu), nitrogen demand (ND) and total nitrogen concentration (Nt) parameters variants of mineral nutrition plays significant role (pNu=0.002; pND=0.045; pNt=0.011). Obtained results indicated that correlation of nitrogen and light interception could be used as criteria in plant breeding.
AB  - Dobijeni rezultati u ispitivanjima hibrida praziluka na genotipsko ispoljavanje prinosa, pomoću utvrđivanja intercepcije svetlosti lisnog pokrivača praziluka gajenog na otvorenom polju u uslovima dodatne mineralne ishrane azotom. Pokazano je da uticaj varijante đubrenja nije značajno statistički povezano sa produktivnošću useva, ali srednje odstupanje pokazuje da je za ostale ispitivane parametre varijanta 125 +125 efikasnija od varijante 250+0 prilikom berbe 91. dana od dana rasađivanja. U navedenim ispitivanjima posebna pažnja je posvećena ulozi genotipa i dinamici parametara azota u suvoj materiji useva praziluka kroz intercepciju svetlosti, koja može da pruži informacije o optimalnoj ishrani azotom u različitim fazama rastenja i razvića biljaka praziluka tokom vegetacionog perioda.

AB  - Field experiments were conducted to study green garlic response to the following plant densities: 300,000; 450,000; 600,000; 750,000 and 900,000 plants/ha. The experiment lasted for two years. Plant measurements started 40 days after planting (DAP) and were performed at ten-day intervals. Eight measurements per year were made in total and the following traits were measured: leaf number per plant, leaf surface area and leaf area index (LAI). These parameters were used to determine the effects of stand density on the photosynthetic apparatus of the garlic plant. These effects were found to be present, but to varying degrees. Stand density had the strongest effect on LAI and the smallest on leaf area. The data collected during the experiment and the appearance of the garlic plants themselves showed that the crop performed best at moderate stand densities (600,000 and 750,000 plants/ha). At such densities, garlic developed a powerful photosynthetic apparatus and the bulbs were large and uniform.

AB  - Tomato yield depends on two components viz., fruit weight and number of fruit per flower branch. These traits are quantitative and therefore influenced by multiple genes. The objective of this study was to estimate the main gene effects ( additive, dominant and digenic epistasis) and to determine the mode of inheritance for yield components and yield in three tomato cross combinations by generation mean analysis. The trial included genotypes differing in morphology and yield: line DAT, cultivar SP-109 and local population KGZ. The analyzed genotypes belong to tomato germplasm collection of the Institute for Vegetable Crops, Smederevska Palanka, Serbia. Six families per hybrid, including parents, have been tested. Besides, the additive and dominance gene effects, non-allelic gene interactions have been detected for yield components and yield. Duplicate type of epistasis was confirmed for fruit weight and yield in all cases characterized by significant dominance and dominance/dominance effects, which diminishes the effect of dominant genes and makes breeding for yield increase more difficult. Therefore, number of fruits per flower branch increase would be the most efficient strategy for increasing tomato yielding ability.

AB  - Analysis in growth, productivity and yield in two maize genotypes (DTP drought tolerant population and line В 73) have been done in rainfed field conditions. The trial was carried out during different stages of development and several parameters of water status (water potential and soil water content), crop growth and productivity (relative leaf expansion rate - RLER relative growth rate - RGR, net assimilation rate - NAR and leaf area ratio - LAR) and components of yield (ear length, row number per ear, grain number per row, ear weight, kernel weight and weight of 1000 kernel) were measured. Obtained results of crop water status pointed out that plants were exposed to mild stress field conditions and also indicated that in this conditions investigated plants may have a chemical signaling regulation mechanism. Growth and productivity analysis of both genotypes showed that leaf area and total biomass were increased during the season and reached maximal values at milky stages. The highest values of RLER, RGR and LAR were observed in the vegetative stage and decreased during the end of season. Drought had smaller effect on inhibition of leaf growth, productivity and yield in drought tolerant population DTP Comparing to drought susceptible line В 73.
AB  - Analiza rastenja, produktivnosti i prinosa kod dva genotipa kukuruza (DTP populacija tolerantna na sušu i linija В 73) urađena je u polju u uslovima suvog ratarenja. Eksperiment je izveden u različitim fazama ontogeneze ispitivanih biljaka. Praćeni su parametri vodnog režima (vodni potencijal i sadržaj vode u supstratu), rastenja i razvića (relativna brzina lisne ekspanzije - RLER, relativna brzina rastenja - RGR, brzina neto asimilacije - NAR i relativna lisna površina -LAR) i komponente prinosa (dužina klipa broj redova po klipu, broj zrna po redu, masa klipa, masa zrna i masa 1000 zrna). Rezultati merenja parametara vodnog režima su pokazali da su biljke u poljskim uslovima bile izložene umerenom stresu suše, kao i da su fiziološki procesi u tim uslovima bili pod dejstvom mehanizama hemijske regulacije. Analiza rastenja i produktivnosti kod oba genotipa je pokazala da su se ukupna lisna površina i biomasa povećale u toku sezone i dostigle maksimalne vrednosti u fazi mlečnog zrenja. Najveće vrednosti RLER, RGR i LAR su utvrđene u vegetativnoj fazi i one su opadale do kraja sezone. Suša je imala slab efekat na inhibiciju rastenja listova, produktivnosti i prinosa kod populacije tolerantne na sušu u poređenju sa linijom В 73 koja je genotip osetljiv na delovanje suše.

AB  - Experiment with leek (Allium porrum L.) was carried out in the field conditions, on a cambic soil. The aim of the experiment was to establish relationships among nitrogen uptake, leaf area index and light interception of leek crop. Nitrogen fertilizer, urea, was applied in amount of 250 kgN/ha. before transplanting (250 kgN/ha+0) and twenty days after transplanting leek (0+250 kgN/ha). Our results obtained that the second way of nitrogen fertilizer applying had a great influence on leaf area development, dry matter production and nitrogen uptake. Increasment of these parameters directly or indirectly had a great effect on increment of leaf area index and light interception of leek crop. .
AB  - U cilju proučavanja mineralne ishrane praziluka (Allium porrum L.) azotom predmet istraživanja bio je mehanizam delovanja usvajanja azota (Nu) na indeks lisne površine (LAI) i intercepciju svetlosti (I) kao značajnih pokazatelja produktivnosti u biljnoj proizvodnji. Praziluk je gajen na zemljištu tipa gajnjače, a za đubrenje useva upotrebljeno je sporo-delujuće azotno đubrivo urea u dozi od 250 kg N/ha, neposredno pre, odnosno dvadeset dana posle rasuđivanja praziluka. Povećano usvajanje azota, kao i jaza ontogeneze u uslovima đubrenja imali su značajan efekat na povećanje lisne površine, indeksa lisne površine i intercepciju svetlosti, stoje rezultiralo i povećanom produkcijom suve materije (W) useva praziluka. .

AB  - We investigated the combining ability, genetic effects and the mode of inheritance of earliness in diallel crossings of 5 divergent pepper genotypes,. The time period from the initial stage of emergence to the initial stage of flowering was used as the earliness indicator. The combining ability was calculated by applying Griffing (1956) method 2, model 1, and the analysis of genetic variance was carried out using Hayman (1954) and Jinks (1956) method, while regression analysis was done using Mather and Jinks method (1971). We tested the mean values of F1, generation comparing them with parental mean values in order to estimate the overdominance and dominance of an early ripening parent. The variance analysis of combining ability showed highly significant differences in the general combining ability (GCA) and in the specific combining ability (SCA). The analysis of the components of genetic variance suggested that the main part of the variance concerning the earliness belonged to the dominant component and that the dominant alleles prevailed over the recessive ones. On the basis of the mean degree of dominance and the data obtained from regression analysis, it can be said that overdominance was the mode of inheritance of the earliness trait in all crossing combinations.
