AB - In this article the influence of ball miling process on structure of MgO-TiO2 system was investigated. The mixtures of MgO-TiO2 powders were mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill for the time period from 0 to 120 minutes. The influence of mechanical activation on the lattice vibrational spectra was studied by Raman spectroscopy at room temperature. Structural investigations have been performed on produced powders. Nitrogen adsorption method was used to determine the BET specific surface area and pore size distribution. Unusual results have been obtained: specific surface area continuously decreased up to 40 minutes of activation and increased after that, reaching its minimun value of 5.5 m2/g. The Raman spectra of activated powders have shown that anatase modes have been decreasing in intensity and broadening as the time of activation extended. Also, the additional modes attributed to TiO2 II, srilankite and rutile phases started to appear as a consequence of activation.

AB - Ferroelectric ceramic barium strontium titanate (Ba0.77Sr0.23TiO3), BST, was prepared by solid-state reactions using starting powders of barium carbonate (BaCO3), strontium carbonate (SrCO3) and titanium dioxide (TiO2-anatase). Non-activated and mechanically activated mixtures with high-energy planetary ball mill (0, 5, 10, 20, 80 and 120 minutes) were sintered at 1100, 1200, 1300 and 1400 °C for two hours in air. The maximum value of ceramic density is about 86.20% TG. X-ray diffraction analysis was used to obtain information on the phase composition, as well as determining the influence of mechanical activation on the half height width of the diffraction lines (111) BST isothermally sintered samples at 1400 °C during two hours. Defects and the beginning process of sintering on the microstructure were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Electrical measurements (loss tangent of the angle, Nyquist diagrams and influence the activation time dependence of XC = f (log ν)) are made of ceramics sintered at 1400 °C for two hours.

AB - Strontium-titanate powder was mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill for 0, 5, 10, 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes. Non-isothermal sintering of non-activated and activated SrTiO3 powder samples in the temperature interval from 50 to 1300 0C with three different heating rates (10, 15 and 20 0C/min) was investigated on a dilatometer. X-ray powder diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to determine the phase composition, lattice microstrains and microstructure morphology of the samples. XRD results showed the presence of new phases: SrCO3 (strontuim-carbonate) and TiO2 (anatase) after 30 minutes of mechanical activation.

Raman spectroscopy of sintered samples indicates a presence of two phases, while varieties in spectra were explained with different ratio of present phases. Effect of activation and sintering process on microstructure was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Electrical measurements showed difference in dielectric constant (εr), loss tangent (tgδ) and specific resistance (ρ) as a function of time of mechanical treatment.

AB - Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 was prepared from the starting materials BaCO3, SrCO3 and TiO2 through solid state reaction. Mixtures of these oxides were mechanically activated using a high-energy ball mill at different time intervals from 0 to 120 minutes. X-ray diffraction was employed in order to determine the crystal structure and gave information about composition of phase variation. It was observed that after 40 minutes early synthesis of Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 phase occurred. Particle size distribution along with scanning electron microscopy gave very useful information about powder morphology.

AB - Starting mixtures of BaCO3, ZnO and TiO2 powders were mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill for various periods of time. The powders obtained were sintered nonisothermally to temperatures between 1100 and 1300°C and then held at those temperatures for 120 min. Results of structural characterization using X-ray powder diffraction method, DTA analyses and SEM analyses were conducted for activated and sintered samples. These results were correlated with the results of electric resistivity, capacitance and loss tangent of the samples and it was found that with increasing in milling time, the increase in values of electrical properties was noticed.

AB - The aim of this paper was to analyse the sintering kinetics and microstructure evolution of ZnO. Powder was isothermally sintered (15, 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes) in the temperature range from 800 to 1200oC. The values of Lenel parameter were used to analyze both densification and mass transport processes. Scanning electron microscopy was performed in order to determine the microstructure evolution and dependence of average grain size on temperature and time of sintering. These results will enable development of new phenomenological equations that can be applied in analyses of sintering kinetics.

AB - In this paper the changes that occured in differently activated ZnO-SnO(2) and sintered samples were investigated using photoacoustic spectroscopy. ZnO and SnO(2) powders, mixed in the molar ratio 2:1, were mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill for 10-160 min. The mixtures were pressed and isothermally sintered at 1300 degrees C for two hours. X-ray diffraction analysis of the obtained sintered samples was performed in order to investigate changes of the phase composition and confirmed only the presence of a pure zinc stannate (Zn(2)SnO(4)) phase in all the sintered samples as a result of the solid state reaction and reaction sintering between the starting ZnO and SnO(2) powders. The microstructure of the sintered samples was examined by scanning electron microscopy and showed that mechanical activation leads to the formation of a structure with reduced particle size which accelerates spinel formation. Grain growth of the spinel phase slows down the densification process and together with the agglomerates formed during mechanical activation causes the appearance of a porous microstructure. The photoacoustic (PA) phase and amplitude spectra of the sintered samples were recorded as a function of the chopped frequency of the laser beam used (red laser with a power of 25 mW, lambda = 632 nm) in a thermal-transmission detection configuration. PA experimental data were analyzed using the Rosenzweig-Gersho thermal-piston model, which enabled determination of the thermal diffusivity, D(T) (m(2) s(-1)), diffusion coefficient of the minority free carriers D (m(2)s(-1)) and the optical absorption coefficient (m(-1)). The detected differences of the measured thermal-electrical properties of the obtained Zn(2)SnO(4) ceramics indicate changes in the material induced by the different preparation procedure of the starting powders before the sintering process.

AB - In this article low temperature sintering of mechanically activated BaCO3-TiO2 system was studied. A stoichiometric mixture of BaCO3 and TiO2 powders was mechanically activated in a high-energy vibromill for 0, 30, 90 and 180 min, calcined at 800oC for 1 h and reaction sintered at 1100oC and 1200oC for 2 h (heating rate of 10oC/min). Phase compositions and crystallographic data of initial, activated, calcinated and sintered specimens were obtained by the XRPD method. It was noticed that mechanical activation enhanced and lowered the temperature of the formation of tetragonal BaTiO3. Scanning electron microscopy was used to study and characterize microstructures of the samples.
AB - U ovome radu je proučavano niskotemperaturno sinterovanje mehanički aktiviranog sistema BaCO3-TiO2. Prah BaCO3 i TiO2 u stehiometrijskom odnosu je mehanički aktiviran u visokoenergetskom vibracionom mlinu tokom 0, 30, 90 i 180 min, kalcinisan na 800oC tokom jednog časa i reakciono sinterovan na 1100 i 1200oC tokom dva časa (brzina zagrevanja je iznosila 10oC/min). Fazni sastav i kristalografski podaci početnih i aktiviranih smesa, kao i kalcinisanih i sinterovanih uzoraka dobijeni su rendgenskom metodom. Skanirajućom elektronskom mikroskopijom proučena je mikrostruktura uzoraka. Utvrđeno je da mehanička aktivacija ubrzava proces sinterovanja, uz snižavanje temperature formiranja tetragonalnog barijum-titanata.

AB - The sintering behavior of BaTiO3 with LiF showed that it was possible to sinter barium titanate at temperatures below 1000 degrees C. Different combinations of the sintering powders were prepared by adding 1 to 5 w% LiF and sintering at the temperature of 950 degrees C for 20 hours. The grain growth of LiF fluxed BaTiO3 was studied, and electron microscopy was used to investigate and characterize the microstructure of the samples. The dielectric constant and dielectric losses were determined. It was shown that the composition of the liquid phase formed during this process had a prominent influence on the grain growth and on the formation of BaTiO3 with better dielectric properties.
