AB - Traditional crop varieties are useful sources of desirable characteristics for developing new
cultivars with improved nutritive and sensory attributes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the
fruit-quality parameters in three traditional tomato genotypes: pink, yellow and dark colors. The
results showed that yellow-colored tomatoes had the highest TSS/TTA ratio and antioxidative activity,
but the lowest content of lycopene and β-carotene. The genotypic differences in the carotenoid
components were also confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. The advantage of the yellow-tomato
genotype related to fruit-quality compounds compared to the other genotypes indicated its potential
in a breeding program.

AB - To assess the effects of ABA deficiency on tomato fruit growth, the ABA mutant flacca was grown in an optimal soil water regime and various analyzes were performed, including morphological (fruit number, diameter and fruit biomass), physiological (duration of growth and fruit growth rate), biochemical (ABA accumulation, enzyme cell wall peroxidase activity) as well as proteomics. The fruit growth analysis showed that the slower fruit growth rate and development resulted in smaller flacca fruits in comparison to the wild-type fruits. The comparison of the temporal dynamics of cell wall peroxidase activity and ABA content in our experiment indicated an opposite relationship during fruit development. Proteomic analysis and the down-regulation of most proteins from carbon and amino acid metabolism, the translation and processing of proteins, energy metabolism and cell wall-related metabolism in the flacca fruits compared to the wild type, indicated reduced metabolic flux which reflected a slower fruit growth and development and reduced fruit size in the ABA mutant. These findings also indicated that ABA limited carbon sources, which could be responsible for the reduced fruit growth and size of ABA-deficient tomato fruits. The up-regulation of sulfur and oxygen-evolving enhancer proteins in the flacca fruits implicated the maintenance of photosynthesis in the late expansion phase, which slows down transition to the ripening stage. The majority of antioxidative and stress defence proteins were down-regulated in the flacca fruits, which could be related to the role of ABA in the activity of different antioxidative enzymes as well as in regulating cell wall expansion and the cessation of fruit growth.

AB - Water deficit triggers physiological, biochemical, and molecular changes in leaves that could be important for overall plant adaptive response and it can affect
tomato yield and quality. To assess the influence of longterm moderate drought on leaves, four tomato accessions
from MAGIC TOM populations were selected on the basis
of their differences in fruit size and were grown in a
glasshouse under control and water deficit conditions.
Drought affected stomatal conductance more in large fruit
genotypes compared to cherry genotypes and this could be
related to higher abscisic acid (ABA) leaf content. Compared to large fruits, cherry tomato genotypes coped better
with water stress by reducing leaf area and maintaining
photochemical efficiency as important adaptive responses.
Accumulation of soluble sugars in the cherry genotypes
and organic acid in the leaves of the larger fruit genotypes
indicated their role in the osmoregulation and the continuum of source/sink gradient under stress conditions. Longterm moderate drought induced upregulation of NCED
gene in all four genotypes that was associated with ABA
production. The increase in the expression of ZEP gene
was found only in the LA1420 cherry genotype and indicated its possible role in the protection against photooxidative stress induced by prolonged water stress. In
addition, upregulation of the APX genes, higher accumulation of vitamin C and total antioxidant capacity in cherry
genotype leaves highlighted their greater adaptive response
against long-term drought stress compared to larger fruit
genotypes that could also reflect at fruit level.

AB - BACKGROUND: and objectives Quinoa is considered to be a "natural functional food" due to a lot of bioactive compounds that are beneficial for human health by helping prevent the risks of different diseases. The aim of this study was to test the health-promoting characteristics of Puno and Titicaca quinoa seeds grown in Serbia by assessing their phenolic and flavonoid content, antioxidant activities, and potential anticancer effect on human colorectal cancer cells. Findings Thirteen phenolic compounds were identified and quantified in the seeds of both cultivars, but their profile and concentration of individual phenolic compounds differed. Cytotoxic activities were present in both cultivars, whereas the pronounced concentration and time-dependent effects were more expressed in Puno extracts. Conclusions The extracts of the seeds of both cultivars are a rich source of phenolic and flavonoid compounds and with high antioxidant activities. Potent anticancer activity against the human colorectal cancer was expressed in both investigated cultivars. Significance and novelty The study confirmed the health benefit potential of Puno and Titicaca quinoa cultivars, grown in Serbia. These results are the first to demonstrate a potent anticancer activity of quinoa seed extract against the human colorectal cancer cell line HCT-116, as well as the presence of 7 new phenolic and flavonoid compounds.

AB - The reaction of leaf growth to drought stress is controlled by various hormones, among which ABA is one of the most important. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of ABA deficiency on tomato leaf response under severe drought stress. Therefore, ABA-mutant (flacca) and wild type (Ailsa Craig) were selected for research and in the stage of second flower truss anthesis plants were exposed to severe water deficit. The effects of severe drought on wild-type leaves and flacca mutant showed that, as a result of reduced ABA concentrations, flacca plants were exposed to a higher degree of stress than wild-type leaves, which had a negative impact on the examined physiological and biochemical parameters. Severe drought caused stomatal closure, decreased water potential, specific leaf area, and chlorophyll concentrations in the leaves in both genotypes, but this was more pronounced in the mutant. Wild-type plants have accumulated more vitamin C and ABA and have a higher total antioxidant capacity in the leaves in dry conditions than flacca mutants, which contribute to their better adaptive response to stress. Based on this, it can be assumed that the ABA mutation has led to a decrease in the capacity for oxidative stress products caused by severe drought stress.

AB - The aim of this study was to investigate the quinoa fruit and seed microstructure, as well as to determine the qualitative composition of quinoa whole seed spatial localisation of food reserves in cultivars Puno and Titicaca using two complementary spectroscopic techniques (Fourier Transform infrared and Raman). The analyses of the seeds also included measurements of the crude proteins and starch contents. The experiment was carried out during the 2016 growing season in rain-fed conditions in the north of Serbia. The analysis of the scores of the principal components based on the Raman spectra revealed two groups in both seed parts (cotyledons and perisperm). The analysis of the loadings highlighted the spectrum region that contributed to the differentiation, e.g. the band at 472 cm(-1) was related to the amylopectin content in the perisperm region. As for the cotyledons, the spectral range from 1100 to 1650 cm(-1) was responsible for genotype differences and it included both the most important bands derived from Amide I, II and quinoa protein with globoid crystals composed of phytin. IR analysis, similar to the analyses of the crude proteins and starch contents in the seeds, failed to reveal any differences in biochemical composition between two analyzed genotypes.

abstract = "The aim of this study was to investigate the quinoa fruit and seed microstructure, as well as to determine the qualitative composition of quinoa whole seed spatial localisation of food reserves in cultivars Puno and Titicaca using two complementary spectroscopic techniques (Fourier Transform infrared and Raman). IR analysis, similar to the analyses of the crude proteins and starch contents in the seeds, failed to reveal any differences in biochemical composition between two analyzed genotypes.",

AB - The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of long term moderate drought stress on fruit yield and quality of four parents of the MAGIC TOM population and to gain insight into the differences in sensitivity to drought between large fruited and cherry tomatoes. Results showed that long term water deficit had a negative effect on fresh mass and fruit diameter that were more expressed in cherry tomatoes than in large fruited ones. Long term moderate water deficit can improve fruit taste in large fruited tomato genotypes by active metabolic accumulation of soluble sugar and organic acid (sucrose and citric acid), which are also osmotic active compounds. The reduction in fruit growth of cherry tomatoes compared to large fruits could be compensated for by improving fruit nutritional value (ascorbic acid, carotenoids and antioxidant activity) through both concentration and metabolic responses.

AB - Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) is considered as a very important agricultural crop due
to its nutritional value and tolerance to different stress factors. The aim of this study was to
investigate the differences in yield, the content of starch and protein in the seed of two
introduced genotypes of quinoa (Puno and Titicaca) and the possibility of their cultivation in
Serbian agroecological conditions. The experiment was carried out during the 2017 growing
season in the rain-fed condition in Subotica, Republic of Serbia. The seeds were sowed in the
first part of April. Sowing was done at a depth of 2 centimeters, the distance between the rows
was 50 cm and between the plants in the row 5 cm. The crops were harvested in the first half
of August when quinoa seeds were mature and the amount of moisture in seed was 12%. The
harvest of Puno and Titicaca seeds was made by hand. The content of crude proteins was
determined according to the Kjeldahl method, while for starch measurement the Ewers
polarimetric method was used. Obtained results showed that the yield of plants Titicaca
genotype (24.4 g/plant) was higher compared to the yield of plants Puno genotype (21.3
g/plant). Our results did not show significantly different values in protein content between the
seeds of Puno (14.1%) and Titicaca (14.0%). Also, the seeds of Titicaca and Puno contained
similar starch content (54.1 and 55.6%, respectively). These results indicate that both
investigation genotypes can be grown in Serbian agroecological conditions.

AB - Due to climate changes and increased demands of different water users (agriculture, industry, domestic) water becomes scarce resources worldwide. Since irrigated agriculture is the one of the largest consumer of these resources (so-called blue water footprint), irrigation management must be shifted from maximal production per crop area to maximal production per unit of water used by crops. Among the strategies for reducing water footprints, changing the full irrigation to the reduced crop's water supply (deficit irrigation techniques) is one of the options. In this mini-review, we present the latest advances of partial root-zone drying (PRD) applications in different agricultural plants, with the special emphases on the PRD effects on increasing WUE, yield and yield quality. We describe two PRD practical approaches (alternate and fixed), BACKGROUND: of PRD induced increase in yield and water use efficiency and improved understanding about nutrient use efficiency. The evidence of PRD effect on the increase in nutritional and health attributes of yield in different species is also presented. Because of limited available data, further research is needed to understand complex biosynthetic pathway and synthesis of nutritive- and health-related metabolites and antioxidants in PRD-treated plants. Practical application and promotion of this knowledge will allow farmers in water scarce areas to adapt PRD not only as a strategy for saving water, improving nutrient use and increase/sustain yield, but also for producing food with enhanced nutritive and health characteristics.

AB - Raman microscopy/spectroscopy is a method for non-destructive qualitative and quantitative
sample analysis and have recently been used for analysing of compounds in plant materials.
The aim of presenting study was to investigate potential of Raman spectroscopy in the
tomato fruit quality characterization, with special attention to carotenoids and vitamin C
analysis.
An experiment was conducted in plant growth chamber in controlled conditions at the Faculty
of Agriculture, University of Belgrade. Fruits of wild-type tomato Ailsa Craig and its mutant
flacca were harvested in red-ripe stage and sliced with microtome blades. Slices were
analysed by Raman spectroscopy (Raman Horiba XploRA), with a laser excitation lines 532 and
785 nm and 1-5 s integration time. The filter was set to 100 % and we used 100 x LWD.
The results indicated that Raman spectroscopy has the great potential for fast, nondestructive analysis of fruit quality, especially of carotenoid content. Analysis of carotenoids
resulted in several strong peaks which could be also used for screening different tomato
genotypes both in optimal and stress conditions. Thus, Raman spectroscopy could be a useful
tool for fruit phenotyping.

AB - Tomato fruit growth and productivity are complex processes depending on the interaction between physiological, genetic and environmental factors. Under current climate conditions of drought and scarce water supply, the challenge is to increase water use efficiency and to sustain tomato yield. Partial root-zone drying technique (PRD) is one of the irrigation methods with the potential to increase the water use efficiency and sustain the yield of many crops including tomato. The aim of presented results was to investigate the effects of PRD on tomato fruit growth, the activity of cell wall-associated peroxidase and ABA content in pericarp of tomato cultivar Ailsa Craig. The experiment was done in controlled conditions and plants under PRD received 70% of water given to full irrigated plants (FI) plants. In PRD irrigation is applied to one half of the root system while the other half dried down and then the treatment was reversed. ABA content in fruit pericarp was measured by ELISA test and cell wall-associated peroxidase activity by a guaiacol test. Fruit growth parameters showed that the maximal growth rate was significantly higher in FI plants than PRD but because the longer period of cell expansion the final diameter of PRD tomato fruits was slightly higher in PRD than in FI fruits. ABA content in tomato pericarp declined during the tomato development until the end of cell growth phase without significant differences between PRD and FI treated plants. The activity of peroxidase was significantly higher in PRD compared to FI. The significantly increase in the activity of enzyme cell wall-associated peroxidase in tomato fruit pericarp under PRD conditions coincided with the end of cell growth and the beginning of the ripening process. These results pointed out that this enzyme may control tomato fruit maturation.

This review paper addresses several aspects of tomato fruit growth and development including its specific phases, control by water regime, cell wall enzymes, plant hormones and metabolic processes.

AB - Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) is a highly nutritious Andean seed crop which shows great potential to grow under a range of different stress environments. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of drought on water regime and the growth of quinoa variety KVL52 in controlled conditions. The results of the present experiment indicate that the reaction of quinoa plants to drought are based on drought avoidance mechanisms: reduced transpiration and sustained water uptake. Transpiration was reduced due to the decrease of stomatal conductance and leaf area development. These results could be of practical importance for testing the possibility of growing quinoa as a new drought resistant crop in Serbia.

AB - This review paper addresses possible adaptation strategies to mitigate drought effects on plants that will increase under climate change. The focus will be on two approaches: use of water-saving deficit irrigation methods (partial root-zone drying-PRD and regulated deficit irrigation-RDI) and breeding of genotypes with increased drought resistance. Both approaches are based on knowledge of plant stress physiology.

AB - The purpose of this research was to blend quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.), buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Möench) and pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo L.) seed kernels at 40% level with wheat flour and to examine the effect of this blend on nutritional and sensory quality and also energy values of the pan bread. Hydrothermal preparation of these supplements is included. Chemical composition of the investigated materials, wheat bread and supplemented bread, was determined using relevant AOAC methods. Chemical composition of supplemented bread with an increase in protein, oil and crude fiber was superior in comparison with control wheat bread. Sensory properties of supplemented bread such as specific volume, appearance, crust and crumb texture, aroma-odor and color were evaluated and found excellent.

AB - Investigation comprised 41 tomato genotypes originating from the population of domestic and domesticated genotypes collected in Serbia and belonging to the tomato collection of the Institute of Vegetable Crop Science, Smederevska Palanka. The aim of collection screening was to choose the genotypes tolerant to drought during plant intensive growth stage, whereby the process of selection would set out to obtain the recombinant genotypes for this abiotic factor. The screening criteria were established for genotype divergence in plant height and shoot-root ratio under conditions of optimal irrigation regime and drought. Divergence was estimated using cluster analysis with Euclidean distance as a measure of distance, with a complete gene attachment to grouping. Drought tolerance is expressed by the stress susceptibility index (SSI). Various results were obtained based on the screening of genotypes grown under optimal and dry conditions. As a measure of stress susceptibility, based on SSI, genotypes having different drought tolerance level were determined. On the grounds of the analyses carried out, 10 genotypes were segregated (G102, G104, G107, G109, G110, G119, G125, G126, G128 and G141) to represent a basis to obtain the recombinant genotypes and to initiate the selection for drought resistance.

AB - The effects of drought (partial root-zone drying-PRD and regulated deficit irrigation-RDI) and full irrigation (FI) on the expression of ABA biosynthetic genes (TAO1 and NCED), EIL1 gene and ABA content in the leaves of tomato wild-type (WT) and flacca mutant were investigated. Results confirmed differences in the expression of the investigated genes under the investigated treatments, during treatment duration as well as between investigated WT and flacca plants. The most significant differences between WT and flacca were found under PRD treatment. The similar expression pattern of all genes in the WT plants could indicate synergistic signaling pathways for ABA and ethylene. In flacca, reduced NCED and significant EIL1 expression might reflect the increase in ethylene production, which could influence the ABA signaling and production that occurred under PRD. Drought also induced an increase in ABA content that is most expressed in flacca under RDI.

AB - Quinoa is an Andean seed crop of many potential uses. In 2009 a field trial was carried out to explore the potential for quinoa growing in climatic conditions of South Eastern Europe. Even under rainfed conditions, without fertilization, a seed yield as high as 1.721 t ha(-1) was obtained. Seed quality was remarkably good, with protein content ranging from 15.16 to 17.41 % on a dry weight basis, depending on whether seeds were processed. Amino acid and mineral composition revealed the potential of quinoa seeds as a valuable ingredient in the preparation of highly nutritious foods. Quinoa seeds had higher contents of most essential amino acids, especially lysine, than wheat flour. Dehulled quinoa seeds, devoid of saponins, were included into wheat bread formulations, with up to 20%, which resulted in a positive effect on the rheological characteristics of dough. Furthermore, protein content in bread was increased by around 2%. Sensory characteristics of breads were excellent also at the 20% supplementation level. The study of bread supplemented with quinoa seeds could enable the development of a range of new baking products with enhanced nutritional value.

AB - The effects of partial root-zone drying (PRD) on tomato fruit growth and proteome in the pericarp of cultivar Ailsa Craig were investigated. The PRD treatment was 70% of water applied to fully irrigated (FI) plants. PRD reduced the fruit number and slightly increased the fruit diameter, whereas the total fruit fresh weight (FW) and dry weight (DW) per plant did not change. Although the growth rate was higher in FI than in PRD fruits, the longer period of cell expansion resulted in bigger PRD fruits. Proteins were extracted from pericarp tissue at two fruit growth stages (15 and 30 days post-anthesis [dpa]), and submitted to proteomic analysis including two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry for identification. Proteins related to carbon and amino acid metabolism indicated that slower metabolic flux in PRD fruits may be the cause of a slower growth rate compared to FI fruits. The increase in expression of the proteins related to cell wall, energy, and stress defense could allow PRD fruits to increase the duration of fruit growth compared to FI fruits. Upregulation of some of the antioxidative enzymes during the cell expansion phase of PRD fruits appears to be related to their role in protecting fruits against the mild stress induced by PRD.

AB - Climate change is one of the most serious problems facing the world today. Agriculture is highly sensitive to climate and climate change could have negative impacts on production of many crops and vegetables, including potato. The predictions are that the special climate impact will have the increased concentration of atmospheric CO2, the level of mean temperature, distribution of precipitation, and number and frequency of extreme weather events. In presented chapter, we review the impacts of climate change on potato as the most important vegetable in a South East European region. Increased agricultural drought is one of the most important consequences of climate change in South East European region. Although drought is not as severe and long as in Mediterranean, agricultural drought in the most countries of South East European region could be more serious because of rising temperature and falling rainfall during summer period. During summer period growth and productivity of a lot of agricultural plants, including potato, are in the most sensitive phase to drought. The special emphases in this chapter were done on the effects of drought on potato. This is of special importance because for many potato cultivars even short periods of drought stress can cause significant reductions in tuber yield and quality and thus, irrigation is required for production of high potato yield. However, the South East European region is facing with the water scarcity and increased competitions for water resources between different sectors (agriculture, industry or domestic consumption). The increase of water use efficiency of agricultural crops and saving of water resources are becoming of strategic importance for the whole region. Furthermore, contamination of water for irrigation is also current problem in the whole region. In presented chapter the aspects of water scarcity and contamination of water for irrigation in the South East European region will be reviewed as well as the possibility to save water for irrigation of potato using deficit irrigation strategies. The chapter also aims to provide an overview of the efforts made to produce potato genotypes resistant to abiotic stresses. In addition, the focus will be also on stress-related genes responsible for specific potato traits promoting stress resistance and identification of molecular markers.

AB - The objective of this work was to compare the nutritional characteristics of wheat bread and the bread produced of wheat flour, with seeds of quinoa, buckwheat and flaxseed as supplements. Bread making properties of these blends were analyzed in order to provide their ability to make molded bread. Quinoa seeds (Chenopodium quinoa Will.) were produced in the vicinity of Belgrade, and the other seeds were collected from the local market. The addition of seeds of cereals and a selected technological process, which include hydrothermal preparation of supplements, possessed a remarkable effect on nutritive value of bread. Moisture, protein, lipid, dietary fiber, ash and starch content of breads were determined. The quinoa proteins are rich in amino acids like lysine and methionine, which are deficient in cereals, and in combination with other cereals might easily replace meat and more ecological food habits. The other ingredients, flax were primarily used as a complement for the polyunsaturated fatty acids, and the buckwheat for increasing protein content. Sensory properties, appearance, crust texture, crumb texture, aroma-odor of crust and crumb and aroma-taste of crust and crumb were also appraised. Sensory characteristics of evaluated bread were excellent with an increase in specific volume of 2%.

AB - Regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) is a water-saving irrigation method that is now undergoing extensive trials worldwide but novel for Serbia and other countries of South East European region. In order to asses the possible application of RDI method in climate conditions of South East European region, the experiments were carried out in vineyard (variety Riesling) and RDI plants received ca. 60% of the water that was applied to fully irrigated (FI) plants. Thus, the significant amount of water for irrigation was saved. Data concerning yield and the soluble solids in the berries did not showed significant differences between RDI and FI plants, while the titrable acidity and antioxidant activity in the berries and IWUE were significantly increased under RDI. Economic analyses was also done to asses the effect of RDI on profit of grape production.

AB - The aim of paper was to asses the use of regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) for production of two tomato cultivars (Cedrico and Abellus) in polytunnels in Serbia. RDI plants received 60% of the water that was applied to FI plants and significant saving of water for irrigation and increased in irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE) were achieved. Yield data for Cedrico cultivar showed no differences between RDI and FI, while due to the bigger sensitivity to drought, yield of Abellus was reduced under RDI. In general, fruit quality (soluble solids, titrable acidity) was sustained or improved in both cultivars under RDI. Economic analyses showed that due to the current low prices of water and electricity in Serbia, the profit increase of Cedrico, similarly to the previously trialed cultivar Amati, was not high under RDI comparing to FI. Reduction of yield and consequent profit for Abellus, indicated that for future commercial growing of tomato under RDI should be used drought resistant cultivars.

AB - Tomato is a crop of worldwide economic importance, and the factors controlling its fruit growth and quality attracted considerable research interest. The aim of this paper was to investigate the effects of deficit irrigation methods (partial root-zone drying (PRD) and regulated deficit irrigation (RDI)) on the yield, water use efficiency (WUE) and quality of tomato fruit and to compare these results with the results obtained of fully irrigated (Fl) plants. Under PRD and RDI tomato plants were irrigated with 60% of the water that was applied to Fl. At the end of the vegetation season, analyses of total yield, fruit quality and WUE were carried out. WUE was calculated on the basis of fruit dry weight and the amounts of water used by the crop. Tomato quality was characterized on the basis of fruit fresh weight by measuring soluble solids, titrable acidity and antioxidant activity. Results showed that with both deficit irrigation methods is possible to increase WUE without significant reduction of tomato yield or yield quality. Comparison between deficit irrigation methods showed: an increase in antioxidative activity in tomato fruits under PRD and thus indicated that for tomato PRD method could be more beneficial irrigation method than RDI.
