Rootstock effect on some quality characteristics of almond cultivars 'Troito', 'Marcona' and 'Texas'

AB  - This study was carried out in order to determine the rootstock effect on content of oil and most abundant fatty acids (oleic acid and linoleic acid), oleic acid/linoleic acid ratio, total phenolic content (TPC) and radical-scavenging activity (RSA) of almond kernels. The experimental orchard was established in 2006 in Surduk (North Serbia). Cultivars 'Troito', 'Marcona' and 'Texas' were budded (grafted) on myrabalan plum seedlings and 'GF 677'. Results revealed significant influence of rootstock on evaluated characteristics. Except content of oleic acid and oleic acid/linoleic acid ratio all other parameters had higher values when cultivars were grafted onto myrabalan plum. As expected, significant differences were also determined among studied cultivars. Except content of linoleic acid, for all other parameters the lowest values were found in 'Marcona', while highest for 'Texas'. Obtained results can be used for improving of almond quality in agroecological conditions of Serbia.

Evaluation of some almond cultivars and selections in Serbia

AB  - This research was conducted to compare biological and pomological characteristics of 15 almond selections from Serbia with cultivars 'Marcona', 'Texas' and 'Troito'. The evaluation of bloom and harvest times, yields and pomological characteristics of nuts and kernels was done during the five year period (2010-2014) in Surduk (northern Serbia). The earliest bloom time was observed in the selections '15/03' and '23/03' (March 26) and the latest in the cultivar 'Texas' (April 5). The average harvest time was the last week of August or the first week of September. The highest yield tree(-1) was recorded for the cultivars 'Marcona' and 'Texas'. Fruit weight ranged from 3.8 to 6.2 g, kernel weight from 0.6 to 1.3 g, and kernel percentage from 13.4 to 32.3%. On the basis of all observed characteristics, the selections '12/03', '24/03', '25/03', '28/03' and the cultivars 'Troito' and 'Texas' can be recommended for growing in the region of Surduk and considered for growing in other parts of Serbia.

Morphological fruit properties of some F1 peach hybrids

AB  - Results of the most important morphological properties of the fruit and stone in four promising peach hybrids of late ripening time in the two-year period of research (2010- 2011) are shown in this paper. Selected hybrids obtained from the crossing combination Flaminia x Summerset. All of the traits of the examined hybrids were compared with a standard cultivar -Summerset. Statistically significant differences between investigated hybrids were found in terms of morphometric properties of the fruit and stone. Fruit weight ranged from 96.41 g (hybrid FS4) to 167.25 g (hybrid FS2). Stone weight was related to fruit weight, and stone share in the fruit weight ranged from 5.87% (hybrid FS2) to 8.24% (hybrid FS6). In terms of descriptive properties of fruit investigated hybrids are mainly exceeded the standard cultivar. Based on the late ripening time, weight and color of fruit, hybrids FS2 and FS3 were selected, which may be of interest as candidates for the recognition of new peach cultivars or further breeding work.
AB  - U ovom radu prikazani su rezultati dvogodišnjih istraživanja (2010-2011) najvažnijih morfoloških osobina ploda i koštice kod četiri perspektivna hibrida breskve poznog vremena sazrevanja. Izdvojeni hibridi dobijeni su iz kombinacije ukrštanja Flaminia x Summerset. Sve osobine ispitivanih hibrida upoređivane su sa standard sortom - Summerset. Između proučavanih hibrida utvrđene su statistički značajne razlike u pogledu morfometrijskih osobina ploda i koštice. Masa ploda se kretala u intervalu od 96,41 g (hibrid FS4) do 167,25 g (hibrid FS2). Masa koštice je bila povezana sa masom ploda, a udeo koštice u masi ploda je varirao od 5,87% (hbrid FS2) do 8,24% (hibrid FS6). U pogledu opisnih osobina ploda proučavani hibridi su uglavnom prevazišli sortu standard. Na osnovu poznog vremena sazrevanja, mase i obojenosti ploda izdvojili su se hibridi FS2 i FS3, koji mogu biti interesantni kao kandidati za priznavanje novih sorti breskve ili dalji oplemenjivački rad.

Influence of vineyard peach selections on vigour and initial yield in peach and nectarine

AB  - Seedlings (progenies) of eight selected vineyard peach genotypes obtained by self and open pollination were examined in this study during three consecutive years. Two progenies from unselected vineyard peach genotypes with different geographic origin were used as a standard. Peach cv. Autumn Glo and nectarine cv. Stark Red Gold were grafted on F1 generation of eight vineyard peach selections and two standard progenies. Analysis of variance indicated statistically significant differences in vigour and fruit productivity between fruit trees grafted on different progenies of vineyard peach selections. A high correlation was found between rootstock vigour and fruit production of grafted cultivars. In addition, the principal component analysis made it possible to establish similar groups of rootstocks, depending on its influence to vigour, productivity and indexes of efficiency of grafted peach and nectarine cultivar. The most promising rootstocks for those two cultivars were PSK and 7S because grafted AG and SRG have high fruit weight, initial yields and very satisfactory rootstock, scion and canopy efficiency.
AB  - U radu su ispitivani sejanci (potomstvo) osam selekcionisanih genotipova vinogradske breskve nastali samooplođenjem i slobodnim oplođenjem. Dva potomstva neselekcionisane vinogradske breskve različitog geografskog porekla su predstavljala standard u ogledu. Breskva Autumn Glo i nektarina Stark Red Gold su okalemljene na F1 generaciju osam selekcija vinogradske breskve i dva standardna potomstva. Srednje vrednosti parametara bujnosti i rodnosti stabala kalemljenih na različita potomstva selekcija vinogradske breskve, su se značajno razlikovale. Potvrđeno je postojanje značajne korelacije između bujnosti podloge i rodnosti okalemljenih sorata. Okalemljene sorte su imale umerenu bujnost i najbolje proizvodne rezultate na podlogama selekcija PSK i 7S.

The influence of high density planting on the quality characteristics of peach and nectarine cultivars

AB  - The influence of three different planting densities on the quality characteristics of peach cultivars ‘Autumn Glo’, ‘Early O’Henry’ and ‘Sunprince’, and nectarine cultivars ‘Stark Redgold’ and ‘Max 7’ were studied. In high density planting, seedlings of vineyard peach were planted at 3.5 x 1 m (2,800 trees ha-1) and grafted a fixed place on 50 cm height. The trees were trained as a Sloping Leader. In standard experimental plot, one- year old peach trees were planted. Applied training systems were Fusseto (4 x 2 m - 1,250 trees ha-1) and Open Vase (4 x 4 m - 625 trees ha-1). The following characteristics were studied: physical, organoleptic and chemical properties for three consecutive years. A small row spacing displayed negative influence on peach fruit weight of ‘Early O’Henry’ and ‘Sunprince’ and nectarine ‘Max 7’, while fruits of the cultivars ‘Autumn Glo’ and ‘Stark Redgold’ had identical fruit weight in all row spacing. High-density planting sys­tem did not demonstrate negative effects on fruit organoleptic and chemical properties. Obtained results on the influence of high density on fruit weight and attractiveness were pointed out importance of cultivar characteristics. Based on this fact cultivars can be divided into two groups: one are suitable and other that can’t be recommendable for high density plantings. In order to select suitable cultivars for this system, it is necessary to evaluate more cultivars in the same experimental field of high density planting.
AB  - Ispitivan je uticaj guste sadnje na kvalitet ploda sorti breskve Autumn Glo, Early O’Henry i Sunprince i nektarine Vinčanka i Max 7. U gustoj sadnji, sejanci vinogradske breskve su posadeni na rastojanju 3,5 x 1 m (2.800 st/ha). Kalemljenje je obavljeno na stalnom mestu na visini od 50 cm a stabla su formirana u obliku kose vodice. Standardni deo ogleda je podignut sa klasičnim sadnicama i gajen u uzgojnom obliku fuzeto (4 x 2 m - 1.250 st/ha ) i kotlasta kruna ( 4 x 4 m - 625 stiha). Ispitivane su fizičke, organoleptičke i hemijske osobine ploda u trogodišnjem periodu. Manji razmak sadnje je ispoljio negativan uticaj na masu ploda sorti breskve Early O’Henry i Sunprince i nektarine Max 7, dok su plodovi sorti Autumn Glo i Stark Redgold imali ujednačenu masu ploda na stablima u svim razmacima sadnje. Sistem guste sadnje nije ispoljio negativan efekat na organoleptičke i hemijske osobine plodova ispitivanih sorata.

abstract = "The influence of three different planting densities on the quality characteristics of peach cultivars ‘Autumn Glo’, ‘Early O’Henry’ and ‘Sunprince’, and nectarine cultivars ‘Stark Redgold’ and ‘Max 7’ were studied. In high density planting, seedlings of vineyard peach were planted at 3.5 x 1 m (2,800 trees ha-1) and grafted a fixed place on 50 cm height. The trees were trained as a Sloping Leader. In standard experimental plot, one- year old peach trees were planted. Applied training systems were Fusseto (4 x 2 m - 1,250 trees ha-1) and Open Vase (4 x 4 m - 625 trees ha-1). The following characteristics were studied: physical, organoleptic and chemical properties for three consecutive years. A small row spacing displayed negative influence on peach fruit weight of ‘Early O’Henry’ and ‘Sunprince’ and nectarine ‘Max 7’, while fruits of the cultivars ‘Autumn Glo’ and ‘Stark Redgold’ had identical fruit weight in all row spacing. High-density planting sys­tem did not demonstrate negative effects on fruit organoleptic and chemical properties. Obtained results on the influence of high density on fruit weight and attractiveness were pointed out importance of cultivar characteristics. Based on this fact cultivars can be divided into two groups: one are suitable and other that can’t be recommendable for high density plantings. In order to select suitable cultivars for this system, it is necessary to evaluate more cultivars in the same experimental field of high density planting., Ispitivan je uticaj guste sadnje na kvalitet ploda sorti breskve Autumn Glo, Early O’Henry i Sunprince i nektarine Vinčanka i Max 7. U gustoj sadnji, sejanci vinogradske breskve su posadeni na rastojanju 3,5 x 1 m (2.800 st/ha). Kalemljenje je obavljeno na stalnom mestu na visini od 50 cm a stabla su formirana u obliku kose vodice. Standardni deo ogleda je podignut sa klasičnim sadnicama i gajen u uzgojnom obliku fuzeto (4 x 2 m - 1.250 st/ha ) i kotlasta kruna ( 4 x 4 m - 625 stiha). Ispitivane su fizičke, organoleptičke i hemijske osobine ploda u trogodišnjem periodu. Manji razmak sadnje je ispoljio negativan uticaj na masu ploda sorti breskve Early O’Henry i Sunprince i nektarine Max 7, dok su plodovi sorti Autumn Glo i Stark Redgold imali ujednačenu masu ploda na stablima u svim razmacima sadnje. Sistem guste sadnje nije ispoljio negativan efekat na organoleptičke i hemijske osobine plodova ispitivanih sorata.",

AB  - During the 2012. in experimental field of Faculty of agriculture 'Radmilovac' was examined the susceptibility of varieties of quince on late spring frost. Low temperature (-3.02°C) was recorded on 10th April 2012. By analysis of obtained results there were found significant differences between the varieties in terms of susceptibility of flower buds on late spring frosts. The greatest damage from late spring frosts (above 70.0%) was found in varieties: Hemus, Rea's Mammoth, Asenica and Vranjska, and minimum damage in the varieties: Mehelnica and Leskovačka (below 10.0%). The degree of injuries was higher in flower buds of quince that were more developed and in the varieties that earlier begin with the flowering.
AB  - Tokom 2012. godine na Oglednom dobru 'Radmilovac' Poljoprivrednog fakulteta u Beogradu ispitivana je osetljivost sorti dunje na pozni prolećni mraz. Niska temperatura (-3,02°C) je zabeležena 10. aprila 2012. godine. Analizom dobijenih rezultata, utvrđene su vrlo značajne razlike između ispitivanih sorti u pogledu osetljivosti cvetnih pupoljaka prema poznim prolećnim mrazevima. Najveće štete od poznih prolećnih mrazeva (preko 70,0%) registrovane su kod sorti: Hemus, Rea's Mammoth, Asenica i Vranjska, a najmanje kod sorti: Mehelnica i Leskovačka (ispod 10,0%). AB  - The almonds are the rich source of energy, nutrients, fiber, vitamins, minerals and phytosterols, which makes them well-balanced food product. It contains no cholesterol. They are a particularly important source of mono unsaturated fatty acids such as oleic and palmitic, which help lower LDL or 'bad cholesterol' and increase HDL or 'good cholesterol'. Daily consumption of raw almonds with skin in the quantity of 56 g reduces the risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer. In addition hull has medicinal characteristics too.
AB  - Jezgra badema bogat su izvor energije, nutrijenata, celuloze, vitamina, minerala i fitosterola što ih čini dobro izbalansiranom namirnicom. Ne sadrži holesterol. Posebno su značajan izvor mono nezasićenih masnih kiselina kao što su oleinska i palmitinska koje pomažu snižavanju LDL ili 'lošeg holesterola' i povećanju HDL ili 'dobrog holesterola'. Svakodnevnom konzumacijom badema sa pokožicom u količini od 56 g smanjuje se opasnost od srčanih bolesti, dijabetesa i kancera. Osim jezgre lekovita svojstva ima i klapina.

Effect of winter and spring frost on the freezing injury of peach and almond cultivars

AB  - The susceptibility of peach, nectarine and almond cultivars to winter and spring frosts was studied during 2012 year at two sites (Experimental farm 'Radmilovac' of the Faculty of Agriculture in Belgrade, and the Institute 'PKB Agroekonomik' in Padinska Skela). At the site 'Radmilovac', winter frost (-20.7°C on 9 February) caused the average injury of 25.4%, 26.6%, and 13.4% of flower buds in peach, nectarine and almond respectively. Spring frost (-2.4°C on 10 April) caused the average injury of 60.4%, 75.6%, and 72.1% of fruitlets in peach, nectarine and almond respectively. The lowest frost injury had peach cultivars 'Redhaven', 'Romestar', and 'Autumn Glo', nectarine cultivars 'Maria Lucia' and 'Caldesi 2000', and the almond cultivar 'Icar'. Despite of the occurrence of both winter and spring frosts, these cultivars gave an optimal crop load. At the site Padinska Skela, where absolute minimum temperature in the winter was -28.3°C (9 February), and in the spring was -5.1°C (10 April), there were no yield at all in peach, nectarine and almond cultivars.

Kernel Characteristics of the Almond Genotypes Selected in Northern Serbia

AB  - This study was initiated to determine morphological and pomological traits, together with chemical compounds of kernels from 19 almond genotypes selected in the spontaneous seedling population in northern Serbia. The lowest variation was obtained for dry matter (CV=0.5%) and the highest for kernel weight (CV=18.4%). The overall mean values of pomological traits, contents of crude protein and mineral matter, showed significant differences between the genotypes. Genotype 25/03 had the lowest (0.69 g), whilst 28/03 had the highest kernel weight (1.29 g). The kernel/nut ratio ranged from 12.4 to 33.5%. The percentage of oil varied from 45.82 to 56.14% and most genotypes showed a high level of crude protein that varied from 20.94 to 26.85%. The most interesting for further studies were genotypes with kernel over 1 g: '29/03', '16/03', '28/03', '1/03', 'B/04', then genotypes '10/03', '11/03', and '17/03' with high kernel oil content (over 55%), as well as genotypes '18/03', '19/03', '22/03', having crude protein content of more than 25%.

Influence of planting density on vigor in peach and nectarine orchard

AB  - Peach production in highly developed countries (France, USA, Greece, Italy) is about 20 t/ha, but average yield in Serbia is much lower. One of the main prerequisite to obtain regular and high yields in peach and nectarine orchard of Serbia is to introduce new training systems. Investigations were done in Fruit research station of the Institute PKB Agroekonomik in Padinska Skela near Belgrade. Orchard was done with vineyard peach seedlings planted and grafted directly on place. Sloping leader was used as training system. Planting distance was 3.5 x 1 m and 3.5 x 1.5 m. In standard trial one year old fruit trees were planted at distance 4 x 2 m with fuseto and at 4 x 4 m with open vase as training systems. Results of three year research how planting distance was influenced on tree vigour parameters of the peach Autumn Glo and clone of nectarine Stark Red Gold was shown. Planting density has significant influence on diameter of epibiote and hypobiote trunk so as on decreasing of central leader vigor.
AB  - Prosečni prinosi breskve u zemljama sa razvijenom voćarskom proizvodnjom (Francuska, SAD, Grčka, Italija) su oko 20 t/ha, dok su prosečni prinosi breskve u Srbiji značajno manji. Jedan od osnovnih preduslova za postizanje redovnih i visokih prinosa breskve i nektarine u Srbiji je uvođenje novih sistema gajenja i uzgojnih oblika. Istraživanja su obavljena u ogledno-proizvodnom zasadu Instituta PKB Agroekomik u Padinskoj Skeli. Podizanje zasada je obavljeno sadnjom i kalemljenjem sejanaca vinogradske breskve na stalnom mestu na rastojanju 3,5 x 1 m i 3,5 x 1,5 m , i formiranjem uzgojnog oblika kosa vođica. Standardni deo ogleda je podignut sadnjom jednogodišnjih sadnica na rastojanju 4 x 2 m uz primenu fuzeta, i 4 x 4 m uz primenu kotlaste krune. Ispitivan je uticaj gustine sadnje na bujnost stabala breskve Autumn Glo i klona nektarine Stark Red Gold. U radu su prikazani trogodišnji rezultati ispitivanja parametara bujnosti. Gustina sadnje je ispoljila značajan uticaj na prečnik debla podloge, prečnik debla sorte i visinu ispitivanih stabala.

AB  - The paper presents the results of three year (2004-2006) study of chemical composition in 19 almond genotypes, selected from Slankamen hill. The aim of this work was selection of the genotypes having high kernel quality. The lowest total dry matter was established for genotype 1/03 (92.64%), and highest for genotype 29/03 (94.44%). Significant variability was obtained for content of oil (45.82% to 56.14%) and of crude protein (20.94 do 26.85%). Mineral matter in kernel varied from 3.21% to 4.33%. Considering nutritive value, the most interesting are genotypes with high kernel oil content (over 55%) 10/03, 11/03, 17/03 as well as genotypes 18/03, 19/03, 22/03 having crude protein content of more than 25%. .
AB  - U radu su prikazani rezultati trogodišnjeg (2004-2006) ispitivanja hemijskog sastava 19 genotipova badema koji su selekcionisani na području Slankamenačkog brega. Cilj rada je bio izdvajanje genotipova koji se odlikuju visokim kvalitetom jezgre. Najmanji sadržaj suvih materija utvrđen je za genotip 1/03 (92,64%), a najveći za genotip 29/03 (94,44%). Značajna variranja utvrđena su za prosečan sadržaj ulja (45,82% do 56,14%) i za prosečan sadržaj sirovih proteina (20,94 do 26,85%). Prosečan sadržaj mineralnih materija bio je u intervalu od 3,21% do 4,33%. Sa aspekta nutritivne vrednosti izdvajaju se genotipovi 10/03, 11/03 i 17/03 sa visokim sadržajem ulja u jezgri (preko 55%) kao i genotipovi 18/03, 19/03, 22/03 sa sadržajem sirovih proteina preko 25%. .

AB  - The objective of this study was to analyze phenological traits of newly cultivars of strawberry from early ripening group: Clery, Queen Elisa and Madeleine. Plants were grown on black mulch foil, at the distance 30x30 cm, with fertirigation. The planting was done at the end of July 2004. in the Institute PKB Agreokonomik. During the period of 2005-2007 flowering and ripening time was observed the open field and under a high plastic tunnel. The earliest flowering and ripening time had cultivar Clery. Compare to open field, in the plastic tunnel start of flowering was 11 and ripening 10 days early for all cultivars.
AB  - Cilj rada je ispitivanje fenoloških osobina novijih sorti jagode ranijeg vremena zrenja: Clery, Queen Elisa i Madeleine. Jagode su gajene na crnoj foliji, sa razmakom sadnje 30x30 cm, uz obezbeđenu fertirigaciju. Sadnja je obavljena krajem jula 2004. god. na Oglednom polju Instituta PKB Agroekonomik. U periodu 2005-2007. praćeno je vreme cvetanje i sazrevanja kod biljaka gajenih na otvorenom polju i u plasteniku. Najranije vreme cvetanja i sazrevanja imala je sorta Clery. Sve ispitivane sorte počinju da cvetaju i sazrevaju prosečno 11, odnosno 10 dana ranije u plasteniku nego na otvorenom polju.

AB  - Due to the importance of obtaining almond cultivars adapted to the agroecological conditions of Serbia, in the period 2005-2006 pollen viability and self-(in)compatibility in 19 almond genotypes selected from the seedling population on Slankamen hill, were studied. All analyzed almond genotypes had good (50-70%) or high (over 70%) pollen germination. The study of self-(in)compatibility was done by monitoring of the fruit set in the field and observing self-pollen growth by fluorescence microscopy. Self-incompatibility was confirmed in all the 19 genotypes by both methods. Pollen tube penetration was stopped mostly at the upper third of the style of all genotypes, with characteristic irregularities.
AB  - U cilju stvaranja sorti badema prilagođenih agro-ekološkim uslovima Srbije u periodu 2005.-2006. godine proučavana je klijavost polena i auto (in)kompatibilnost 19 genotipova badema odabranih iz populacije sejanaca na Slankamenačkom bregu. Svi ispitivani genotipovi badema imali su dobru (50-70- %) ili visoku klijavost polena (preko 70%). Ispitivanja auto (in)kompatibilnosti su obavljena praćenjem zametanja u poljskim uslovima i metodom fluorescentne mikroskopije. Auto inkompatibilnost je u oba slučaja bila izražena kod svih 19 genotipova. Kod svih genotipova polenove cevčice su zaustavljale rast najdalje u gornjoj trećini stubića uz karakteristične petlje, zadebljanja i krivudanja.
