AB  - In this study, levan from Bacillus licheniformis NS032 was modified in an aqueous medium by octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA), and the properties of the obtained derivatives were studied. The maximum efficiency in the synthesis reaction was achieved at 40 °C and a polysaccharide slurry concentration of 30 %. Increasing the reagent concentration (2–10 %) led to an increase in the degree of substitution (0.016–0.048). Structures of derivatives were confirmed by FTIR and NMR. Scanning electronic microscopy, thermogravimetry, and dynamic light scattering analyses showed that the derivatives with degrees of substitution of 0.025 and 0.036 retained levan's porous structure and thermostability and showed better colloidal stability than the native polysaccharide. The intrinsic viscosity of derivatives increased upon modification, while the surface tension of the 1 % solution was lowered to 61 mN/m. Oil-in-water emulsions prepared with sunflower oil (10 % and 20 %) by mechanical homogenization and 2 and 10 % derivatives in the continuous phase showed mean oil droplet sizes of 106–195 μm, while the distribution curves exhibited bimodal character. The studied derivatives have a good capacity to stabilize emulsions, as they have a creaming index ranging from 73 % to 94 %. The OSA-modified levans could have potential applications in new formulations of emulsion-based systems. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

AB  - Mushrooms are experiencing a kind of renaissance as a part of the contemporary human diet. These valuable organisms are more than food, they fit in perfectly as a novel market group known as nutra-mycoceuticals. Immune-balancing mushroom dietary fibers and secondary metabolites such as polyphenols are the main focus of the healthcare industry. Wellness and cosmetic companies are increasingly using mushroom extracts rich in these ingredients. This review considers the basic molecular immunomodulatory mechanisms of action of the most commonly used mushroom dietary fibers, β-glucans. The literature data on their bioavailability, metabolic transformations, preclinical and human clinical research, and safety are discussed. Immunomodulatory mechanisms of polyphenol ingredients are also considered. These molecules present great potential in the design of the new immunity balancer formulations according to their widespread structural diversity. Finally, we draw attention to the perspectives of modern trends in mushroom nutraceutical and cosmeceutical formulations to strengthen and balance immunity. © 2022

Lignicolous mushroom Fomitopsis pinicola as a potent inhibitor of lipid peroxidation

AB  - Excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) often results in irreversible cell
damage and leads to a number of disorders such as hypertension, heart disease, diabetes,
inflammation, premature aging and cancer. Considering the importance of diet in prevention
of diseases associated with oxidative stress, this study was conducted to evaluate antioxidant
activity of the methanol extract of wild lignicolus mushroom Fomitopsis pinicola as natural
source of functional food ingredients. Nowadays functional food products based on the
lignicolous mushroom species are increasingly available on the market. Their powders and
extracts are consumed as dietary supplements in the form of capsules or tablets and as
additives in the formulation of healthier food products.
Antioxidant capacity of F. pinicola methanol extract was evaluated in vitro by the inhibition
of lipid peroxidation (LPx) in the linoleic acid model system. Results were normalized and
expressed as EC50 values (μg/mL). The Folin-Ciocalteu reaction adapted for a 96-well
microplate reader was used to determine the total phenol content (TPC) and result was
expressed as mg of gallic acid equivalent (GAE) per g of dry weight (DW) of extract.
Phenolic profile of the extract was analyzed by the liquid chromatography coupled with
tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Based on the analysis, TPC of the methanol extract
was reported to be 133.11 mg GAE/g of DW. Among hydroxybenzoic acids, the most
abundant was gallic acid, represented by 951.12 μg/g of DW. Also, presence of ellagic,
protocatechuic, p-hydroxybenzoic and syringic acid was observed. Among hydroxycinnamic
acids, chlorogenic acid was the most prevalent, with 0.76 μg/g of DW. With regard to
antioxidant activity and inhibition of LPx, EC50 value for F. pinicola methanol extract was
20.0 μg/mL.
The results of the present study suggest that methanol extract of the wild lignicolus
mushroom F. pinicola acts as natural antioxidant in the prevention of LPx. This mushroom
may be a good source for the development of antioxidant additives.

AB  - Phellinus linteus is a popular medicinal mushroom that is widely used in Asian countries. A number
of studies have confirmed that P. linteus possesses exceptional biological potential useful for
pharmacological applications, including anticancer and anti-inflammatory activities, as well as
antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, and neuroprotective effects. The objective of the present study was to
evaluate antioxidant and immunomodulatory activities of hot water polysaccharide extract obtained
from the medicinal mushroom Phellinus linteus (Berk. et Curt.) Teng. FT-IR was used to study the
polysaccharide profile of the extract. Its antioxidant potential was measured by the conjugated
diene method in the linoleic acid model system. Immunomodulation was tested in vitro by
measuring the synthesis of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) in healthy human peripheral blood
mononuclear cells (PBMCs) using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The FT-IR
spectrum of P. linteus hot water extracted polysaccharides showed a typical carbohydrate pattern. A
small amount of proteins was also observed with characteristic absorptions at 1635, 1540 and 1412
cm-1
. Measurements of antioxidant properties in linoleic acid model system revealed relatively high
antioxidant activity with EC50 value of 7.11 mg/mL. After 48 h of P. linteus polysaccharide extract
incubation, the IFN-γ titer displayed immunosuppressive effect, 32.6 pg/mL. The IFN-γ titer for the
suspension of PBMCs in PBS, which was used as a positive control, was found to be 135.2 pg/mL.
Differences in IFN- γ contents in P. linteus extract vs. model control were strongly significant (p <
0.05). The results of this study suggest that the polysaccharide extract of P. linteus acts as a natural
antioxidant and possesses immunomodulatory properties. Therefore, it can be a suitable raw
material for the development of antioxidant food additives. In addition, due to the possible
immunosuppressive effect P. linteus polysaccharide extract is particularly interesting and could find
application in suppression of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis.

AB  - The health promoting effects of hot water extracts obtained from fruiting bodies of the commercially cultivated mushroom Agaricus bisporus (AbHW) and the wild-growing mushroom Ganoderma resinaceum (GrHW) originating from northern Serbia are presented in this research. These abilities were compared in vitro by the prevention of lipid peroxidation (LPx) in a linoleic acid model system, inhibition of the angiotension converting I enzyme (ACE) that could help in the maintenance of a normal blood pressure level and strengthening the ability of the central cholinergic neuron by inhibiting the activity of acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Cytotoxic activities were observed towards selected human malignant (HeLa and K562) cell lines and normal-human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). GrHW contains higher phenolics (5.9 g (100 g)(-1)), inhibition of LPx (EC50 = 1.07 mg mL(-1)), ACE (IC50 = 0.54 mg mL(-1)) and AChE (IC50 = 0.37 mg mL(-1)), and exhibited a significant selectivity in the antitumour action against HeLa (IC50 = 0.14 mg mL(-1)) and K562 (IC50 = 0.11 mg mL(-1)) cells. AbHW contained higher total protein (6.4 g (100 g)(-1)), carbohydrate (75.4 g (100 g)(-1)) and beta-glucan (55.1 g (100 g)(-1)) contents and induced significant proliferation of healthy PBMC from 152-116 % in the concentration range of 0.047-0.187 mg mL(-1). The difference in the biological activity of the extracts provides guidance on their use as functional food.

AB  - Total quality index approach was used to reflect the quality of Pleurotus ostreatus
mushroom, cultivated on grape pomace (P) as food waste substrate and wheat straw
(S), in four different combined ratios: 100P; 80P20S; 50P50S; and 20P80S, with
100S, serving as control substrate. This approach involved two directions of mushroom
analysis. The whole mushroom fruiting bodies analysis introduced a single total
quality index (TQIM) based on 11 quality parameters. The mushroom water extracts
analysis was presented by another single total quality index (TQIE), with seven quality
parameters. This mathematical model revealed that the mushroom extracts have a
better overall quality score with higher pomace content in substrate mixture, compared
to the whole mushroom quality changes throughout the observed shelf life
period. Future research may pay attention to the phytotoxicity of grape pomace as a
food waste, as well as the influence of grape pomace on glucan content, as a healthbeneficial
compounds.

Ganoderma lucidum as a cosmeceutical: antiradical potential and inhibitory effect on hyperpigmentation and skin extracellular matrix degradation enzymes

AB  - Three different polysaccharide extracts of a wild European source of the mushroom Ganoderma lucidum were screened for their free radical-blocking potential, which could strengthen the skin's barrier function, and provide a skin-lightening effect via potential inhibition of tyrosinase. The anti-collagenase and anti-elastase activities, which can help to restore skin elasticity and tensile strength, were also evaluated for the three extracts. Carbohydrates were the most abundant components of the extracts, followed by smaller quantities of proteins, phenols and flavonoids. The glucan fraction represented between 48% and 61% of carbohydrate content in all three extracts. None of the analyzed extracts showed overt toxicity to spontaneously-transformed immortal human keratinocytes (HaCaT) at concentrations up to 2 mg/mL, and displayed superior scavenging ability on 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals. The hot water crude polysaccharide extract (HWCP) and partially purified fraction (HWPP) were found to be effective inhibitors of lipid peroxidation (LPx), with an almost two-fold increased inhibition of LPx compared with ascorbic acid (EC50 = 1.65 +/- 0.08 mg/mL), a common additive in cosmeceutical formulations and used at mg levels. Among the investigated extracts, HWCP showed the strongest inhibition potential on tyrosinase and skin extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation enzymes. These diverse functionalities indicate that G. lucidum may represent a promising source of natural cosmeceutical ingredients.

AB  - Novel macromolecular graft copolymers were synthesized by reaction of the hydroxyl groups of the microbial polysaccharide levan, produced using Bacillus licheniformis, with polystyrene (Lev-g-PS). Synthesis was performed by the free radical reaction using potassium persulfate (PPS) as initiator. The prepared copolymer was characterized by FTIR, SEM, TG/DTA, XRD and C-13 NMR. The influence of the different conditions (reaction temperature, air or nitrogen atmosphere, reaction time, type of amines and ascorbic acid (AA) concentration) on the grafting reaction was investigated. Results showed that maximum percentage of grafting (58.1%) was achieved at a reaction temperature 70 degrees C, in a nitrogen atmosphere and using dimethylethanolamine (DMEA) as the amine activator. On the basis of the obtained results, the likely reaction mechanism was proposed. Synthesized copolymers have better thermal stability in comparison with their initial components. Copolymers such as Lev-g-PS could potentially have many applications, such as compatibilizers and material for membranes.

AB  - Oxidative stress caused by an imbalanced metabolism and an excess of reactive oxygen species (ROS) lead to a range of health disorders in humans. Our endogenous antioxidant defense mechanisms and our dietary intake of antioxidants potentially regulate our oxidative homeostasis. Numerous synthetic antioxidants can effectively improve defense mechanisms, but because of their adverse toxic effects under certain conditions, preference is given to natural compounds. Consequently, the requirements for natural, alternative sources of antioxidant foods identified in edible mushrooms, as well as the mechanistic action involved in their antioxidant properties, have increased rapidly. Chemical composition and antioxidant potential of mushrooms have been intensively studied. Edible mushrooms might be used directly in enhancement of antioxidant defenses through dietary supplementation to reduce the level of oxidative stress. Wild or cultivated, they have been related to significant antioxidant properties due to their bioactive compounds, such as polyphenols, polysaccharides, vitamins, carotenoids and minerals. Antioxidant and health benefits, observed in edible mushrooms, seem an additional reason for their traditional use as a popular delicacy food. This review discusses the consumption of edible mushrooms as a powerful instrument in maintaining health, longevity and life quality.

Our endogenous antioxidant defense mechanisms and our dietary intake of antioxidants potentially regulate our oxidative homeostasis. Numerous synthetic antioxidants can effectively improve defense mechanisms, but because of their adverse toxic effects under certain conditions, preference is given to natural compounds. Consequently, the requirements for natural, alternative sources of antioxidant foods identified in edible mushrooms, as well as the mechanistic action involved in their antioxidant properties, have increased rapidly. Chemical composition and antioxidant potential of mushrooms have been intensively studied. Edible mushrooms might be used directly in enhancement of antioxidant defenses through dietary supplementation to reduce the level of oxidative stress. Wild or cultivated, they have been related to significant antioxidant properties due to their bioactive compounds, such as polyphenols, polysaccharides, vitamins, carotenoids and minerals. Antioxidant and health benefits, observed in edible mushrooms, seem an additional reason for their traditional use as a popular delicacy food. This review discusses the consumption of edible mushrooms as a powerful instrument in maintaining health, longevity and life quality.",

AB  - Partially purified polysaccharides (FP) and hot alkali extract (FNa) obtained from fruiting bodies of the wild basidiomycete Grifola frondosa were examined for their antimicrobial, antioxidant and cytotoxic activity. The structural properties of FP and FNa samples were investigated by FT-IR and high resolution 1H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. From a group of various G- and G+ bacteria the antibacterial effects were highest against the G + B. cereus. FNa was the better antioxidant shown by the lower EC50 values of DPPH scavenging ability, ferric-reducing antioxidant power and ferrous ion-chelating ability. Ferric-reducing antioxidant power and ferrous ion-chelating ability were mostly linked to total polysaccharides, total- and beta-glucan content, as well as total protein content. Both extracts displayed a moderate dose dependent antiproliferative action towards malignant human breast cancer MDA-MB-453, cervical adenocarcinoma HeLa and myelogenous leukemia K562 cells not observed in the non cancer derived MRC-5 fibroblasts. The highest effect was found in HeLa cells for FP extract. The mean diameter of Ca-alginate bead loading FP was 960.7 mu m while the mean diameter of beads encapsulating FNa extract was 1051.7 mu m.

AB  - The methanolic extract of the wild edible mushroom Cantharellus cibarius Fr. (chanterelle) was analyzed for in vitro antioxidative, cytotoxic, antihypertensive and antibacterial activities. Various primary and secondary metabolites were found. Phenols were the major antioxidant components found in the extract (49.8 mg g(-1)), followed by flavonoids, whose content was approximately 86% of the total phenol content. Antioxidant activity, measured by four different methods, was high for inhibition of lipid peroxidation (EC50 = 1.21 mg mL(-1)) and chelating ability (EC50 = 0.64 mg mL(-1)). The antioxidant activity of the C. cibarius methanol extract was achieved through chelating iron compared to hydrogen atom and/or electron transfer. The extract showed good selectivity in cytotoxicity on human cervix adenocarcinoma HeLa, breast carcinoma MDA-MB-453 and human myelogenous leukemia K562, compared to normal control human fetal lung fibroblasts MRC-5 and human lung bronchial epithelial cells BEAS-2B. The extract had inhibitory activity against angiotensin converting I enzyme (ACE) (IC50 = 0.063 mg mL(-1)). The extract revealed selective antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria with the highest potential against E. faecalis. The medicinal and health benefits, observed in wild C. cibarius mushroom, seem an additional reason for its traditional use as a popular delicacy food.

AB  - Polysaccharides of the European strain of A. brasiliensis were obtained by hot water extraction and ethanol precipitation (HWPE I) of fruiting bodies, and further purified by dialysis (HWPE II) and pronase incubation (PPE). These polysaccharides consisted mainly of (1 -> 6)-beta-D-glucans. PPE was free of proteins and polyphenols as demonstrated by quantitative assays and NMR profiling. They showed a clear IFN-gamma inducing activity in human PBMCs, which suggests these polysaccharides to have proinflammatory effects. Treatment by beta-glucosidase caused the polysaccharides to be degraded into smaller fragments and at the same time increased their IFN-gamma inducing activity in PBMCs fourfold. In vitro, PPE showed a dose-dependent inhibition of the proliferation of the human leukemia Jurkat cell. At 100 mu g/mL the cells' viability was decreased by appr. 51% compared to the control. EPR spin trapping demonstrated a high antioxidative activity against (OH)-O-center dot and (center dot)O2(-) radicals of HWPE land PPE. Further, the results of the antioxidant assays indicated that antioxidant activity against (OH)-O-center dot radicals in the Fenton system was achieved through scavenging or through chelating iron mechanisms. The good immunomodulating and antioxidative properties of A. brasiliensis polysaccharide extract obtained by hot water extraction and ethanol precipitation make it suitable for everyday use as an inexpensive dietary supplement.

AB  - The fungal polysaccharides attract a lot of attention due to their multiple challenging biological properties, such as: anti-tumor, anti-viral, anticomplementary, anticoagulant, hypolipidemic, immunomodulatory and immune-stimulatory activities, which all together make them suitable for application in many quite distinctive areas, such as food industry, biomedicine, cosmetology, agriculture, environmental protection and waste water management. This article presents results with respect to biological properties, structure and procedures related to the isolation and activation of polysaccharides of higher fungi. It is considered and presented along with a review of the critical antioxidative activity and possible influence of the structural composition of polysaccharide extracts (isolated from these higher fungi) upon their antioxidative properties.
AB  - Polisaharidi gljiva privlače veliku pažnju zbog svojih interesantnih bioloskih svojstava kao sto su: antitumorno, antivirusno, antikomplementarno, antikoagulaciono, hipolipidemijsko dejstvo, kao i imunomodulatorska i imunostimulativna aktivnost, sto ih sve čini pogodnim za primenu u mnogim oblastima, među kojima su i prehrambena industrija, kozmetika, biomedicina, poljoprivreda, zastita životne sredine i otpadnih voda. Oksidativna ostecenja prirodnih i industrijski pripremljenih namirnica predstavljaju veliki ekonomski problem na globalnom nivou, s obzirom da direktno utiču na promenu organoleptičkih osobina proizvoda, pri čemu dolazi i do stvaranja potencijalno toksičnih jedinjenja. Zbog toga se danas sve veća pažnja posvećuje istraživanjima novih prirodnih izvora antioksidanasa, među kojima su veoma značajni i polisaharidni ekstrakti različitih bazidiomiceta. U ovom radu su prikazana bioloska svojstva, struktura, kao i postupci izolovanja i aktivacije polisaharida visih gljiva. Dat je i pregled antioksidativne aktivnosti polisaharidnih ekstrakata visih gljiva i razmatran je uticaj strukturnih karakteristika ovih ekstrakata na antioksidativna svojstva.

AB  - Hot water extract (LN), partially purified polysaccharides (LP) and hot alkali extracted polysaccharides (LNa) obtained from fruiting bodies of the wild basidiomycete Laetiporus sulphureus were examined for their antioxidant activities. LNa was the most active antioxidant, as shown by the median effective concentrations (EC50 values) of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity (0.5 +/- 0.2 mg/ml), reducing power (4.0 +/- 0.3 mg/ml) and ferrous ion-chelating ability (1.5 +/- 0.1 mg/ml). LNa contained the highest level of alpha-glucan (17.3 +/- 1.2 g/100 g dw), whereas LP contained mostly beta-glucans (66.8 +/- 1.3 g/100 g dw). The prevalent monosaccharide in all extracts was glucose. The EC50 values of all three antioxidant activity assays were well-correlated with the alpha-glucan content. Strong and significant correlation was found between total phenolic compounds and DPPH scavenging ability and also reducing power. The three investigated extracts (at concentrations of 0.1-10 mg/ml) were not toxic to HTR-8/SVneo trophoblast cell line.

AB  - Fruiting bodies of some wild and cultivatable mushrooms contain medicinal compounds which are being used in traditional medicines and cosmetics. Champignon mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) is the most widely cultivated species of edible mushroom worldwide. This paper focuses on antioxidant and antimicrobial importance of A bisporus. Water-soluble polysaccharide-enriched fraction was isolated from the dry carpophores of Agaricus bisporus. Antioxidant activities were investigated using in vitro assay systems: 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging and chelating ability on ferrous ions. Antimicrobial activity was tested against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria in vitro by disk diffusion method in order to determine the zones of inhibition. At concentrations of 0.1-10 mg/ml, the scavenging abilities of A bisporus ranged between 12.3-75.5 %. The radical scavenging ability of the positive controls-tocopherol and ascorbic acid, at the concentrations of 0.1-20 mg/ml, were between 79.9-80.8 and 80.6-91.1 %, respectively. Polysaccharide extract from A bisporus showed steadily increasing chelating ability as concentrations increased to 88.2 % at 20 mg/ml. The chelating ability of the citric acid was between 7.2-10.7 %, at the concentrations of 0.1-20 mg/ml. The study of antimicrobial potential of polysaccharide extract showed more potent activity against Gram-positive Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 49532 (26.7 ± 0.2 mm), Bacillus cereus 10876 (27.5 ± 0.4 mm), Geobacillus stearothermophylus ATCC 7953 (22.8 ± 0.3 mm) than Gram-negative bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 35032 (10.4 ± 0.6 mm), Proteus hauseri ATCC 13315 (12.1 ± 0.1 mm) Escherichia coli (0157:H7) 35150 (12.7 ± 0.4 mm) with exception of Klebsiella pneumoniae ATCC 27736 (22.3 ± 0.2 mm).

AB  - Antioxidant activities of polysaccharide extracts of four of the most widely known mushrooms often used in medicinal applications as well as in tea and food, namely Ganoderma applanatum, Ganoderma lucidum, Lentinus edodes and Trametes versicolor, were studied. G. applanatum and L edodes extracts were the strongest DPPH scavengers, i.e. EC50  lt  0.1 mg/mL. G. applanatum extract had the highest chelating ability of ferrous ion (EC50 = 3.58 mg/mL), inhibition of lipid peroxidation (EC50 = 2.07 mg/mL) and had the highest reducing power, EC50 = 0.18. All four polysaccharide extracts showed a strong correlation between the reducing power and the total amount of phenols and alpha-glucans: no such correlation was found between the reducing power and the amount of total polysaccharides and proteins. The extracts contained a mixture/complex of polysaccharides, proteins and polyphenols, still present after hot water treatment, ethanol precipitation and dialysis. Glucose was the prevalent monosaccharide of all polysaccharides and samples contained both alpha- and beta-glucans. Total glucan contents varied considerably, i.e. from 35% for G. applanatum to 83% for G. lucidum. Uronic acid was found in the G. applanatum polysaccharides. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analysis showed strong aromatic and ester peaks next to the different sugar and polysaccharide signals.

AB  - Partially purified polysaccharides were obtained from four medicinal mushroom species, Agaricus bisporus, Agaricus brasiliensis, Phellinus linteus and Ganoderma lucidum by hot water extraction, followed by ethanol precipitation. The four samples contained varying amounts of both alpha- and beta-glucans as determined by FT-IR and by quantitative estimation after prior partial hydrolysis (Megazyme beta-glucan assay kit). EC50 values of the DPPH scavenging activity of the polysaccharides from G. lucidum spores and P. linteus fruiting bodies were found to be particularly low, i.e. EC50  lt  0.1 mg/ml. For A. brasiliensis and A. bisporus, EC50 values were 0.27 and 2.0 mg/ml. EC50 values of the antioxidant activity were 7.07 mg/ml for G. lucidum, 13.25 mg/ml for A. brasiliensis and >20 mg/ml for A. bisporus polysaccharide, respectively. EC50 values of the chelating activity of ferrous ions ranged from 0.59 mg/ml for G. lucidum to 7.80 mg/ml for A. bisporus. The EC50 values of the extracts in the reducing power assay ranged from 0.47 to 14.83 mg/ml. A correlation was found between EC50 values of the chelating and reducing power abilities and the amount of total glucans content in the extracts. In vitro measurements of immunomodulatory capacity of polysaccharide extracts showed that A. bisporus, A. brasiliensis fruiting bodies and G. lucidum spores extracts express an immunostimulating effect on activated human PBMCs and induce synthesis of IFN-gamma. The polysaccharide extract of P. linteus fruiting bodies showed an immunosuppressive effect.

abstract = "Partially purified polysaccharides were obtained from four medicinal mushroom species, Agaricus bisporus, Agaricus brasiliensis, Phellinus linteus and Ganoderma lucidum by hot water extraction, followed by ethanol precipitation. The four samples contained varying amounts of both alpha- and beta-glucans as determined by FT-IR and by quantitative estimation after prior partial hydrolysis (Megazyme beta-glucan assay kit). EC50 values of the DPPH scavenging activity of the polysaccharides from G. lucidum spores and P. linteus fruiting bodies were found to be particularly low, i.e. EC50  lt  0.1 mg/ml. For A. brasiliensis and A. bisporus, EC50 values were 0.27 and 2.0 mg/ml. EC50 values of the antioxidant activity were 7.07 mg/ml for G. lucidum, 13.25 mg/ml for A. brasiliensis and >20 mg/ml for A. bisporus polysaccharide, respectively. EC50 values of the chelating activity of ferrous ions ranged from 0.59 mg/ml for G. lucidum to 7.80 mg/ml for A. bisporus. The EC50 values of the extracts in the reducing power assay ranged from 0.47 to 14.83 mg/ml. A correlation was found between EC50 values of the chelating and reducing power abilities and the amount of total glucans content in the extracts.
