AB - We present the results of the optical emission spectroscopy study of the Ar I 517.753 nm spectral line, observed at different positions in the cathode sheath of an abnormal DC Grimm-type glow discharge source operated in argon. The line profiles were recorded parallel to the cathode surface (side-on view), along the discharge axis from the cathode towards the negative glow. The spectra show a red line shift, which diminishes with the distance from the cathode surface and decreasing electric field. This allows experimental determination of the coefficient C in quadratic relation, Δν = CE2, between the wavenumber Stark shifts, Δν, and electric field strength, E. The above relation is a low-field (up to 25 kV/cm) approximation of the quadratic dependence of the upper-level shift, measured for a large set of argon lines at high electric fields (up to 700 kV/cm) by Windholz (Phys Scr 21:67–74, 1980). One of these lines, Ar I 537.349 nm, is used here for independent measurement of the electric field E and correlated with the Ar I 517.753 nm upper-level wavenumber shift Δν to obtain a line-specific coefficient C. In this way, the Ar I 517.753 nm spectral line complements the set of argon lines suitable for Stark spectroscopy diagnostics of the electric field distribution and cathode sheath length, the knowledge of which allows for a better understanding and description of the glow discharge processes through various theoretical models. AB - We report a study of the cathode sheath (CS) space of the argon glow discharges in the abnormal DC regime by means of the iterative kinetic model. By matching the model shapes of the side-on spectra with the experimental data for the Ar II 460.954 nm line obtained via optical emission spectroscopy, we have estimated the thickness of the CS space and the distributions of the electric field strength and gas temperature over the entire CS space of discharge. AB - We present a series of optical emission spectroscopy (OES) measurements of the stable correlation in characteristic features of spectral line shapes of neutral neon and argon, recorded in the Grimm-type plane cathode DC glow discharge (GD) source from two positions: (1) perpendicular to the cathode surface from the end of the discharge, in line with the discharge axis (end-on view) and (2) side-on cathode view, parallel to the cathode surface and perpendicular to the discharge axis, at the position of the maximum external electric field Fmax in the cathode sheath (CS), close to the cathode surface. Side-on view recording enables spatially resolved OES in the CS, where the Stark effect decisively determines the splitting and shifting of line components relative to the unshifted zero-field line. On the other hand, commonly available end-on view spectra recording in standard analytical Grimm-type sources collects integral light emission from the different layers of the discharge, both CS and negative glow (NG). However, distinct Stark components of several Ne I and Ar I lines' splitting and shifting in the CS are preserved as characteristic excessive wings broadening features in the end-on recordings as well. Following spectral measurements of six Ne I and four Ar I lines in a broad range of discharge conditions (pressure, voltage, current) and cathode materials, we report on a sustained correlation coefficient of 1.083 in neon and 1.129 in argon between the side-on recorded components shift Δλs at the position of maximum field Fmax in the CS, and the end-on recorded wings broadening characteristic features shift Δλe. Individual Ne I and Ar I lines' correlation coefficients Δλs/Δλe are reported also. These coefficients can be used to estimate the maximum CS electric field Fmax and the CS thickness dc within reasonable margins of uncertainty in a standard analytical Grimm-type GD source with an end-on view available only.

AB - We report results of an experimental and theoretical study of complex UV line shapes of Ne II 369.421 nm, Ne II 370.962 nm, Ne II 371.308 nm, and. Ne II 372.711 nm lines in the cathode sheath (CS) region of an abnormal DC glow discharge in pure neon. Two sets of experimental profiles and electric field distributions, one for discharge with tungsten and the other with titanium cathode, were obtained by means of the optical emission spectroscopy (OES) and theoretically studied by the iterative CS kinetic model. It is shown that our theoretical model enables the determination of the most important CS parameters (e.g. the thickness of the CS region, and the theoretical distributions of electric field and gas temperature) and thereupon based accurate theoretical predictions of the experimentally observed profiles of the studied lines.

AB - We present an iterative kinetic model of the cathode-fall region in an abnormal glow
discharge of pure neon, which enables determination of the distribution of electric
field strength E, the distribution of the number densities of Ne atoms and Ne+ ions
together with the spectral shapes of Ne I and Ne II lines recorded end-on and side on at various distances from the cathode. We compare our model predictions with
corresponding experimental electric field strength distributions determined from Ne
I 515.443 nm line recorded side-on under same experimental conditions. These Ne I
line recordings enable experimental determination of the electric field distribution via
measurement of the Stark shift ∆λ and by using the Stark shift coefficient C in a well
known quadratic relation ∆λ = −λ
2CE; the value of C is reported in Ivanovi´c et al.
2017. Furthermore, we compare the model prediction for the shape of Ne II 371.308
nm spectral line which serves as a test for validity of our theoretical model

AB - The cathode sheath (CS) region is the most important part of abnormal glow discharge
(GD), where various processes relevant for the operation and application occur. The most important
parameter of the CS is the distribution of electric field strength E which is of crucial importance for
charged particles acceleration, their trajectories, kinetic energies, and collisions with other particles
and cathode sputtering. All these processes are relevant for the operation of GD as well as for
numerous applications in the field of spectroscopic analysis, plasma etching, thin film deposition,
and depth profiling of cathode material. Thus, the importance of non-perturbing technique for E
distribution measurement in the CS region was recognized long time ago. Within this article, a simple
technique based on standard optical emission spectroscopy (OES) and typical laboratory equipment
has been used for E mapping in the CS region of an abnormal glow discharge.

AB - We report the initial results of a study of the Ne I 503.775 nm spectral line profiles in an abnormal Grimm glow discharge of pure neon. The profiles were recorded under same experimental conditions both end-on (i.e. along the discharge axis) and side-on (i.e. in a direction parallel to the cathode surface). We show that Our findings may have a considerable importance for the elemental trace analysis performed with the aid of optical emission spectroscopy of the end-on radiation profiles preventing possible misinterpretation of the profile wavy features as a weak radiation emitted by some elements that are contained in traces in the samples under study.

Balmer the Hα line in external magnetic field. Hydrogen atoms were excited in a
hollow cathode glow discharge operating in gas mixture of argon and hydrogen
(vol. 99.2% Ar + 0.8% H2). Homogenous magnetic field is generated along the
axis of Helmholtz coils, which generated homogenous magnetic field where the
hollow cathode glow discharge was located. The influence of magnetic field
(B=30, 50, and 70 mT) to the parameters of hollow cathode glow discharge, total
intensity, change in relative contributions and the energy of individual
components of the Hα line was studied. It is shown that not only the changes in
line intensity are detected, but also significant changes in the relative
contributions and energy of individual components of the Hα line occur.

of several visible neon atomic lines Ne I (503.135nm; 507.421 nm; 511.367 nm;
515.196 nm; 515.443 nm; 520.390 nm; and 520.886 nm) recorded in the cathode
sheath region of an abnormal glow discharge operated in neon with a small
admixture of hydrogen. The electric field (up to 13.4 kV cm−1) is measured from
the π-polarized profile of the hydrogen Balmer line Hα using Stark polarization
spectroscopy technique. Within the low electric field range, the Ne I lines exhibit
a quadratic Stark effect. The values of the coefficients, correlating Stark shift and
electric field strength, were determined, which enable their future use for electric
field strength measurements in discharges with neon.

AB - One of the distinguished features of the cathode sheath (CS) region of abnormal
glow discharges (GD) is the distribution of electric field strength F, which is of
crucial importance for charged particles acceleration, their trajectories, kinetic
energies and collisions with other particles and cathode sputtering. All these
processes are relevant for the operation of GD, as well as for numerous
applications in the field of spectroscopic analysis, plasma etching, thin film
deposition and depth profiling of cathode material. Thus, the importance of nonperturbing
technique for F distribution measurement in a tiny CS region was
recognized long time ago.
Within this work, a simple technique, based on the standard optical
emission spectroscopy (OES) and standard laboratory equipment, has been used
for F mapping in the CS region of abnormal GDs of Grimm type in argon and
neon. This is in essence the well known Lo Surdo technique used for studies of
Stark effect, but employed with a modern CCD detector [1-3].
The profiles of two neutral argon lines (Ar I 518.775 nm and
522.127 nm) and several neutral neon lines were observed in the CS region sideon
to the discharge axis. It was found that some of the studied lines manifest the
Stark splitting, and that all lines exhibit Stark shifts, whose measured values are
subsequently used for estimating the distributions of the electric field strength in
the cathode sheath region of the studied glow discharges.

AB - Animal fat in all-chicken frankfurters (control) was replaced with pretreated linseed oil to provide 50 and 100% of recommended daily alpha-linolenic acid intake. Linseed oil was pretreated with multifunctional corn ingredient (E25 and E50) and alginate mixture (G25 and G50). No impairments in water binding properties of the modified frankfurter matrix were observed. Significant increase in b* and h values was observed, intensively in G treatments. Significantly higher hardness was observed in E25 and chewiness in both E treatments. During storage, an increase in yellowness, hardness, cohesiveness, and chewiness was recorded in all treatments including control. Significant improvement of fatty acid profiles was recorded in all modified frankfurters. Observed differences in some parameters of technological characteristics were not confirmed in sensory evaluations. The results of sensory analysis indicate that the level of fat replacement with linseed oil and the manner of pretreatment did not lead to unacceptability. Practical applicationsFrankfurters are well-known comminuted meat products usually made from pork and beef, but despite a considerable increase in poultry meat production over the past two decades, research on all-poultry frankfurters with fat partly replaced by pretreated oil are rare. The results of this current study showed that all-chicken frankfurters with 50% of recommended daily intake of ALA had very similar characteristics to control, while increasing content of linseed oil (to 100%) potentially can impair sensory characteristics, depending of oil pretreatment, but not below the acceptability. Since data in literature are scarce in terms of all-chicken frankfurters with fat partly replaced by pretreated oil, the results of this research complement the results of the research on pork and beef frankfurters and the results of the study on the use of linseed oil in other meat products.

AB - The analysis of DC Stark shift for NeI 511.367 nm
line was previously reported by Jäger and Windholz
[1] who found that the line splits into three Stark
components, shifted towards larger wavelengths
(i.e. smaller wave numbers). In a wide range of
electric field (>50 kV/cm), they successfully fitted
measured Stark shifts with eq. 2, using the Stark
coefficients listed in table 2, see [1].
Unfortunately, this neon line exhibits small Stark
shifts, which require high spectral resolution for
reliable electric field strength measurement in the
cathode sheath (CS) region of neon glow discharge
(GD). Fortunately, there are another neutral neon
lines, such as NeI 503.134 nm, which have much
larger Stark shifts, but there are no experimental data
for determination of algebraic coefficients for
electric field strength evaluation.
To measure the Stark shifts of the
NeI 511.367 nm line, we have fitted its experimental
profiles with the model function developed for this
purpose. The aim of this work are measurements
Stark shift of NeI 511.367 nm and comparison with
results obtained in [1].

AB - We present the results of an experimental study of the DC Stark shift for seven visible NeI
lines in the plane cathode sheath region of an abnormal glow discharge operated in neon with
a small admixture of hydrogen. The electric field (up to 13.4 kV cm−1) in the cathode sheath
region is measured from the π-polarized profile of the H alpha line of hydrogen using the
Stark polarization spectroscopy technique. Within the realized range of the electric field, the
NeI lines exhibit a quadratic Stark effect. The values of coefficients, correlating Stark shift and
electric field strength, were determined, enabling their future use for unknown electric field
strength measurements. Among the studied lines, so far only the Stark effect analysis of the
NeI 511.367 nm line has been reported, in which case our results are in good agreement with
the best fit formula proposed by Jäger and Windholz (1984 Phys. Scr. 29 344) for one out of
three Stark components detected under our experimental conditions.

spectral range from 500 nm to 550 nm have been recently studied in an abnormal
glow discharge of Grimm type (Majstorovi¶c et al. 2013, ·Si·sovi¶c et al. 2014). Spectral

phenomena observed in end-on line shapes in Grimm type glow discharge are related
quantitatively to dc Stark e®ect in the cathode fall region and plasma line broadening
in negative glow region. Namely, the side-on spectra showed spectral line shifting and
sometimes simultaneous shifting and splitting in the cathode fall region of the glow

e®ect may be used for estimate electric ¯eld strength in the cathode fall region of

AB - We report the results of Ar I and Ne I line shapes study in Grimm type glow discharge operating with iron or aluminium cathode in argon and neon. The spectral lines were observed along the axis of cylindrical abnormal glow discharge parallel (side-on) and perpendicular to the cathode surface (end-on). The side-on spectra show spectral line shifting and sometimes simultaneous shifting and splitting in the cathode fall region of glow discharge. The results of measured line shift with available data for dc Stark effect are used for measurement of electric field strength in the cathode fall region of glow discharge.

AB - Glow discharges are successfully used as an excitation source for analytical spectroscopy of metal and alloy
samples [1, 2]. These glow discharge sources (GDS) are usually built on the basis of the Grimm original
design [3] with direct current (dc) and more recently with radio frequency (RF) excitation.
With the growing number of applications of GDSs in optical emission spectroscopy (OES) it became evident
that reliable wavelength tables of glow discharge spectra are needed. A group of authors decided to
overcome this lack of data and began the formidable task of measuring and comparing GD wavelengths and
line intensity data with other available sources of information [4]. One of used instruments was a high
spectral resolution Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS). As a light source a Grimm-type GDS with 4mm
anode hole operated in argon or neon was utilized. A discharge voltage of 720V and discharge current of
20mA are kept constant in all experiments, while the pressure is varied depending on the cathode material
and working gas. All discharge observations are carried out end-on through the anode opening, i.e.
perpendicular to the cathode surface. The lines of several cathode elements are studied and some of them
are used as wavelength standards (Fe I lines for example). A considerable part of this study is devoted to
argon and neon lines, i.e. gases which are used most frequently to operate an analytical GDS. Recently, it
has been noted that some Ar I and Ne I lines have large widths, exceeding 4–5 times the instrumental half-
width, and in addition to line broadening red shifting of lines has also been detected [5].
In order to determine the origin of large widths and shifts detected in [5], Ar I and Ne I line shapes in an
abnormal argon or neon glow discharge were observed along the axis of a cylindrical glow discharge parallel
(side-on) and perpendicular (end-on) to the cathode surface [6]. The side-on spectra show spectral line
shifting and sometimes simultaneous shifting and splitting in the cathode fall region of the glow discharge.
The results of the measured line shift with available data for the dc Stark effect are used for measurement of
electric field strength in the cathode fall region of the glow discharge. The end-on recorded line profiles show
10–40% larger half-widths than the side-on recorded line profiles. This effect is a result of the superposition
of line emission in the cathode fall region under the influence of the dc Stark effect on the line profile from
the negative glow.
The explanation is of importance for the application of new wavelength tables and may be of some value for
characterization of other discharges.
