AB - For the establishment and exploitation of alfalfa, the seed must be of high purity, germination, and high genetic value. Most of these requirements is realized through processing or removal of foreign matter and seeds of lower quality. Alfalfa seed processing comprises a number of operations from which the most significant are: cleaning, packaging into ambalage, labeling, storage, disinfection and disinsection. In combine harvesting of alfalfa seeds, the obtained material is a mixture of seed of grown plant, seeds of other plants-cultivated and weed, and various impurities of organic and inorganic origin. The task is to remove all foreign matter and various impurities from the natural seed and extract pure grain of primary culture. The importance of processed seed is reflected in the fact that the seed must be prepared for sowing in the most favorable condition, quality and germination. In this study natural alfalfa seed was processed on three different equipment. The aim of this research was to determine relevant parameters of all tested equipment for alfalfa seed processing. Relevant parameters that define the characteristics of equipment for seed processing were: pure seed (%), weed seeds and seeds of other crops (%), inert matter (%), the quantity of processed seed (kg), seed processing time (h), consumption of active energy (kWh) and reactive energy (kVArh), seed losses (%) and output (%). Testing was conducted at the processing center of the Institute of Forage Crops in Globoder-Kruševac, with three replications. Natural alfalfa seed with purity of 78.0%, with an extremely high content of quarantine dodder weed (Cuscuta spp.), was processed. Based on these results it is possible to select an appropriate equipment and optimize and rationalize the alfalfa seed processing.

AB - During post-harvest maturation, different species vary in the length of dormancy breaking or germination increases. Seed dormancy and slow seedling development often limit establishment of forage grass stands. Seed germination and seedling vigour of Italian ryegrass (Lolium italicum A. Braun, Synonym Lolium multiflorum L.), cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.) and timothy (Phleum pretense L.) were observed after harvest and storage. After harvest in June, seeds were stored under standard storage conditions and sampled every 30 days after harvest (DAH), up to 270 DAH, and then every 60 days up to 990 DAH. At each date, seeds were tested for final germination percentage and for seedling vigour traits. Timothy seeds had a maximum germination (88%) and the best seedlings vigour at 90 DAH, which implies that early autumn (September-October) is the best sowing period for freshly harvested seeds of timothy. Timothy seed germination was poor from 270 DAH (73%). The best germination and vigour of Italian ryegrass and cocksfoot seedlings were between 270 and 330 DAH, which equates to spring sowing time (March-April) in the succeeding year. Cocksfoot and Italian ryegrass seeds maintained satisfactory germination levels up to 630 DAH (81%) and 810 DAH (81%), respectively. The data can serve for the determination of a proper storage duration management between harvest and sowing of the tested species under ambient conditions of south-eastern Europe.

AB - A survey on the presence of the halophytic grass Puccinellia limosa in numerous plant communities distributed on salt affected soils in Serbia indicated a general preference of this halophyte for moderately to highly salinized and very alkalinized soils, mainly of solonetz and sodic solonchak type. Responses to the salinity in P. limosa were studied by soil-plant relations, estimated through alterations in ions concentration, bothin soil saturation extract and in root and shoot of plants collected in their typical community, the ass. Puccinellietum limosae (Rapes.) Wend., found in the salt marsh situated in the middle Banat (Vojvodina, Serbia). Soil salt content gradually increased during thevegetation season of the plant, reaching a maximum of 0.64%, corresponding to ECe of 25.1 mmhos/cm. Concentration of ions in root and shoot off! limosa (umol/g DW) significantly differed, whereas in the root the highest values had sodium (172.83 ± 94.86), potassium (147.26 ± 25.65) and calcium (139.66 ± 20.05), and in theshoot chlorides (186.68 ± 57.51), potassium (158.74 ± 50.2) and sodium (130.09 ± 58.84). The root/shoot ratio gradually increased during the investigated period, and was correlated with Na/K of the root, suggesting a significance of salt exclusionand control of transport of salts towards the shoot, operating at the root level. Statistical processing of data showed that factors assigned as age of the plant, corresponding to increasing soil salinity, and plant part (root and shoot), individually and mutually, had a significant effect on salt accumulation and related ions allocation in P. limosa.

AB - An analysis of participation of weed species in the floristic composition of the meadow community ass. Danthonietum calycinae spreading on Mount Stol was carried out in order to estimate the quality and management of its grassland. The percentage of weed species in the investigated community amounted to 56.91 %. Among the poisonous species, the most abundant were Rhinanthus rumelicus Velen., Euphrasia stricta Wolff ex Lehm, Colchicum autumnale L., Digitalis ambigua Miller and Euphorbia cyparissias L. With regard to the number of undesirable and harmful species, this community is less suitable as a source of forage. For improving forage quality in this community, management measures are recommended.

AB - Changes in grassland flora and vegetation Caused by inadequate management, primarily under-grazing and grass-lands abandonment were studied in the south-east region of Serbia - Mt. Stara Planina, the largest mountain massif of the country. This mountain is one of the major centres of tertiary and endemic-relict plant species that remains in ravines, and glacial relics and mountain endemic species. The paper presents an analysis and comparison of previous (about 30 years ago) and current biodiversity of the most common grasslands, such as: ass. Festuco-Agrostietum vulgaris, Agrostio-Asphodeletum albae. Koelerietum montanae, Agrostietum vulgaris, Festucetum spadiceae, Nardetum strictae, Poetum molinerii-Plantaginetum carinatae, Poetum violaceae and Seslerietum coerulantis. Both environmental and human impacts on grassland vegetation were discussed and a proposal of sustainable grassland use and management is given.

AB - Salt affected soils especially in the arid arid semi-arid regions of the world exhibit a significant increasing tendency. The relationship between plant/vegetation richness and soil salinity was assessed for 2 1 grassland asscociations arid one sub-association of Serbia. Among Studied grasslands, the ass. Halo-Crypsidetum aculeatae, Suaedetum maritimae and Salicornieto-Suaedetum maritimae were found to be indicators of the extremely saline soils (solonchak), whereas the ass. Lepidio crassifolio-Festucetum pseudovinae, Trifollietum subterranei and Peucedano-Asteretum punctati were typical indicators of sodic soils (solonetz). Management and use of grasslands of salt affected soils arid evaluation of pastoral value arid salinity tolerance of the studied grasslands was performed.
