AB  - Content of individual sugars, organic acids, total phenolics (TPH), some important phenolic compounds (kaempferol, myricetin, quercetin, and ellagic acid) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) in the fruits of strawberry, raspberry and blackberry were studied. A comparison was made between cultivars and wild relatives of each species (Fragaria vesca L., Rubus idaeus L. and Rubus fruticosus L.). The main sugars found were fructose and glucose both in the fruits of wild species and the studied cultivars. Citric acid was determined to be the major organic acid in most of tested berries with the exception of blackberry cultivars, where malic acid was dominant. The content of individual phenolic compounds varied among the wild species, as well as among the studied cultivars. Ellagic acid content was higher in F. vesca, R. idaeus and R. fruticosus (122.5 mu g/g FW, 12.71 mu g/g FW and 61.7 mu g/g FW, respectively) than that obtained in analyzed cultivars. Overall, TPH expressed higher values in the wild strawberry and blackberry species in comparison to the studied cultivars, and consequently, the highest levels of TAC were recorded in F. vesca (5.78 mg asc/g FW), followed by R. fruticosus (4.95 mg asc/g FW).

Evaluation of different methods for determining growing degree-day thresholds in apricot cultivars

AB  - The aim of this study was to examine different methods for determining growing degree-day (GDD) threshold temperatures for two phenological stages (full bloom and harvest) and select the optimal thresholds for a greater number of apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.) cultivars grown in the Belgrade region. A 10-year data series were used to conduct the study. Several commonly used methods to determine the threshold temperatures from field observation were evaluated: (1) the least standard deviation in GDD; (2) the least standard deviation in days; (3) the least coefficient of variation in GDD; (4) regression coefficient; (5) the least standard deviation in days with a mean temperature above the threshold; (6) the least coefficient of variation in days with a mean temperature above the threshold; and (7) the smallest root mean square error between the observed and predicted number of days. In addition, two methods for calculating daily GDD, and two methods for calculating daily mean air temperatures were tested to emphasize the differences that can arise by different interpretations of basic GDD equation. The best agreement with observations was attained by method (7). The lower threshold temperature obtained by this method differed among cultivars from -5.6 to -1.7A degrees C for full bloom, and from -0.5 to 6.6A degrees C for harvest. However, the "Null" method (lower threshold set to 0A degrees C) and "Fixed Value" method (lower threshold set to -2A degrees C for full bloom and to 3A degrees C for harvest) gave very good results. The limitations of the widely used method (1) and methods (5) and (6), which generally performed worst, are discussed in the paper.

Pomological and antioxidant properties of red currant cultivars (Ribes rubrum L.)

AB  - Three red currant cultivars ('Heinemanns Rote Spatlese', 'Rondom' and 'Red Versailles') were assayed for pomological and antioxidant properties in the period of 2004-2006. It was found out that cv 'Rondom' was superior with regard to physical properties of bunch and fruit, whereas cv 'Heinemanns Rote Spatlese' expressed significantly lower values for these traits. However, the best chemical fruit composition was obtained by cv 'Heinemanns Rote Spatlese'. Regarding the content of some individual phenolic compounds (kaempferol, myricetin, quercetin, and ellagic acid) as well as the total phenolics, great variability was observed among the studied cultivars. Total phenolics expressed the highest value in cv 'Heinemanns Rote Spatlese' (1,70 mg GA g-1), and consequently the highest level of antioxidant capacity was recorded in this cultivar (2,13 mg ask g-1). The significant linear correlation observed between total phenolics and antioxidant capacity in cvs 'Heinemanns Rote Spatlese' (r = 0,71) and Rondom (r = 0,80) indicates that phenolic compounds had significant contribution in expressed antioxidant activities. No significant correlation was only observed in cv 'Red Versailles', which points to the fact that some another compounds might contribute to an overall antioxidant capacity.
AB  - Rad prikazuje rezultate trogodišnjih ispitivanja pomoloških osobina i antioksidativnog kapaciteta ploda kod tri sorte crvene ribizle (Industrija, Rondom i Versajska crvena). Ustanovljene su značajno niže vrednosti mase grozda (4,73 g), dužine grozda (6,85 cm), broja bobica u grozdu (9,1) i mase bobice (0,60 g) kod sorte Industrija, dok u pogledu hemijskog sastava ploda, odnosno sadržaja ukupnih prostih šećera (208,7 mg g-1) i ukupnih kiselina (0,45 mg g-1), ova sorta je pokazala superiornost. Rezultati sadržaja individualnih fenolnih jedinjenja (flavonola i elaginske kiseline) ukazuju da je sorta Versajska crvena ispoljila najviše prosečne vrednosti sadržaja miricetina (1,28 μg g-1), kvercetina (3,14 μg g-1) i elaginske kiseline (6,02 μg g-1), ali istovremeno i najni- ži prosečni sadržaj ukupnih fenola (0,82 mg GA g-1). Niska korelaciona zavisnost registrovana između sadržaja ukupnih fenola i antioksidativnog kapaciteta ploda kod ove sorte, pri čemu koeficijent korelacije nije bio statistički značajan, ukazuje na činjenicu da su određena jedinjenja imala različit doprinos u ispoljenoj antioksidativnoj aktivnosti. Međutim, kod sorte Industrija se zapaža suprotna tendencija, odnosno najviše vrednosti sadržaja ukupnih fenola (1,70 mg GA g-1) i antioksidativnog kapaciteta ploda (2,13 mg ask g-1) su registrovane u plodovima ove sorte, kao i statistički značajna korelaciona zavisnost između pomenutih parametara (r = 0,71).

Examining self-compatibility in plum (Prunus domestica L.) by fluorescence microscopy

AB  - Self-compatibility in 18 European plum cultivars was examined using the method of fluorescence microscopy. According to selfcompatibility, cultivars were divided into two groups: self-compatible and self-incompatible. In self-compatible cultivars the number of pistils, where pollen tubes reached the base of the style varied from 32.00% (Anna Späth) to 91.18% (Wangenheims Frühzwetsche). Mean number of pollen tubes at the base of style in these cultivars ranged from 0.52 to 3.97. Cultivars were considered self-incompatible if pollen tubes stopped their growth in the style along with forming characteristic swellings at their tips. Of the studied cultivars, 13 were found to be self-compatible: Wangenheims Frühzwetsche, Cacanska Lepotica, Valjevka, California Blue, Cacanska Rodna, Italian Prune, Stanley, Požegaca, Herman, Bluefre, Jelica, Ruth Gerstetter and Anna Späth, while 5 were found to be self-incompatible: Cacanska Rana, Zimmers Frühzwetsche, Cacanska Najbolja, Pacific and President.
AB  - Kod 18 sorti domaće šljive ispitivana je samooplodnost metodom fluorescentne mikroskopije. Na osnovu samooplodnosti sorte su podeljene u dve grupe: autokompatibilne i autoinkompatibilne. Kod autokompatibilnih sorti broj tučkova kod kojih su polenove cevčice stigle do osnove stubića varirao je od 32,00% (Ana Špet) do 91,18% (Vangenhajmova). Prosečan broj polenovih cevčica u osnovi stubića kod ovih sorti je bio od 0,52 do 3,97. Sorte su smatrane autoinkompatibilnim ako su polenove cevčice zaustavljale rast u stubiću tucka uz formiranje karakterističnih zadebljanja na njihovim krajevima. Među proučavanim sortama 13 su se pokazale kao autokompatibilne: Vangenhajmova, Čačanska lepotica, Valjevka, Kalifornijska plava, Čačanska rodna, Italijanka, Stenli, Požegača, Herman, Blufri, Jelica, Rut geršteter i Ana Špet, a 5 kao autoinkompatibilne: Čačanska rana, Cimerova rana, ČaČanska najbolja, Pacifik i Prezident.

AB  - The content of some important phenolic compounds (kaempferol, myricetin, quercetin, and ellagic acid), total phenolics (TPH), vitamin C, and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) in the fruit of three black currant cultivars (Ben Lomond, Ben Sarek and Malling Juel) were studied. The content of individual phenolic compounds showed variability among the studied cultivars. The main flavonol found in cv. Malling Juel was kaempferol (1.60 μg g-1 FW), whereas the lowest values of myricetin (5.46 μg g-1 FW) and quercetin (7.65 μg g-1 FW) were also observed in the fruit of this cultivar. Ellagic acid content was the highest in cv. Ben Lomond (12.90 μg g-1 FW), which is also characterized by lower values of individual flavonols compared to other cultivars tested. However, the highest TPH level was recorded in cv. Ben Lomond (4.71 mg g-1FW). Vitamin C content in fruit of cv. Malling Juel was at a very high level (141.4 mg 100g-1), whereas cv. Ben Lomond expressed the highest level of TAC (7.60 mg asc g-1 FW). Overall, the content and profile of phenolic compounds in the black currant cultivars showed significant contribution to the expressed antioxidant capacity which was confirmed by positive correlation between TPH and TAC obtained in this study. Besides total phenolics, vitamin C is also a significant contributor to the measured antioxidant capacity in black currant fruit indicating that some cultivars with lower phenolic content may express high TAC.
AB  - Rad prikazuje rezultate trogodišnjih ispitivanja sadržaja važnih fenolnih jedinjenja (flavonola - kampferola, miricetina i kvercetina, elaginske kiseline i ukupnih fenola), vitamina C, kao i vrednosti antioksidativnog kapaciteta registrovane u plodu tri sorte crne ribizle Ben lomond, Ben sarek i Moling džuel. Istraživanja su realizovana u periodu od 2004. do 2006. godine u laboratorijama Katedre za voćarstvo Poljoprivrednog fakulteta Univerziteta u Beogradu i Instituta za multidisciplinarna istraživanja iz Beograda. Ustanovljeno je variranje u sadržaju pojedinih individualnih fenolnih komponenti između ispitivanih sorti crne ribizle, pri čemu je kod sorte Moling džuel registrovan najveći prosečni sadržaj kampferola (1,60 μg g-1), ali i najniže prosečne vrednosti sadržaja miricetina (5,46 μg g-1) i kvercetina (7,65 μg g-1). Među ispitivanim sortama crne ribizle najveći sadržaj elaginske kiseline imala je sorta Ben lomond (12,90 μg g-1), koja se odlikuje nešto nižim vrednostima sadržaja flavonola u plodu, ali i najvećim sadržajem ukupnih fenola za ispitivani period (4,71 mg g-1). U pogledu sadržaja vitamina C, sorta Moling džuel je pokazala superiornost (141,4 mg 100g-1), dok se najvećim antioksidativnim kapacitetom ploda za trogodišnji period ispitivanja odlikuje sorta Ben lomond (7,60 mg ask g-1). Na osnovu većine analiziranih parametara može se konstatovati da sadržaj i profil fenolnih komponenata prisutnih u plodovima ispitivanih sorti crne ribizle, ima značajan doprinos u ispoljenoj antioksidativnoj aktivnosti, što potvrđuje i pozitivna korelativna zavisnost između sadržaja ukupnih fenola i antioksidativnog kapaciteta ploda. Pored ukupnih fenola, značajan doprinos antioksidativnom kapacitetu ploda daje i vitamin C. To objašnjava pojavu da su neke sorte posedovale visok antioksidativni kapacitet ploda uz, istovremeno registrovan, umeren sadržaj fenolnih jedinjenja.

Cross-(in)compatibility in apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.)

AB  - Eight apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.) cultivars and selections were self- and cross-pollinated in order to determine their pollen and stylar compatibility. Overall, 40 pollination combinations were examined. Pollen-tube growth in pistils pollinated in the laboratory was analysed using fluorescence microscopy. Three inter-incompatiblity groups of cultivars were found, of which two had not been described previously, while an existing group was expanded with one additional cultivar. The first group consisted of three Hungarian cultivars ('Ligeti Orias', 'Cegledi Orias', and 'Szegedi Mammut') and a Moldavian cultivar ('Kostjuzhenskyi'). The second group consisted of two American cultivars ('Stark Early Orange' and 'Nugget'). The third group consisted of two Serbian selections (Novi Sad Early' and 'Frushka Gora Early'). In the incompatible cultivar combinations, pollen-tube growth stopped in the style with the formation of the characteristic swelling. In the compatible combinations, the pollen tubes reached the ovary in the majority of the pistils examined.

AB  - Isoenzyme polymorphism was studied in 20 almond (Prunus dulcis [Mill.] D. A. Webb) genotypes selected from seedling populations of unknown almond cultivars in the region of northern Serbia (Vojvodina). Fourteen enzyme systems were studied using the method of vertical polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Ten systems were polymorphic in twelve loci. This polymorphism allowed unique identification of all studied genotypes. The most useful enzyme for analysis of almond genetic variability was menadione reductase. Polymorphism identified for alkaline phosphatase, formate dehydrogenase, glutamate dehydrogenase, malic enzyme, and menadione reductase was reported for the first time in almond. Cluster analysis was used to construct a dendrogram on which five clusters with different number of genotypes could be identified.

Influence of planting density on vigor in peach and nectarine orchard

AB  - Peach production in highly developed countries (France, USA, Greece, Italy) is about 20 t/ha, but average yield in Serbia is much lower. One of the main prerequisite to obtain regular and high yields in peach and nectarine orchard of Serbia is to introduce new training systems. Investigations were done in Fruit research station of the Institute PKB Agroekonomik in Padinska Skela near Belgrade. Orchard was done with vineyard peach seedlings planted and grafted directly on place. Sloping leader was used as training system. Planting distance was 3.5 x 1 m and 3.5 x 1.5 m. In standard trial one year old fruit trees were planted at distance 4 x 2 m with fuseto and at 4 x 4 m with open vase as training systems. Results of three year research how planting distance was influenced on tree vigour parameters of the peach Autumn Glo and clone of nectarine Stark Red Gold was shown. Planting density has significant influence on diameter of epibiote and hypobiote trunk so as on decreasing of central leader vigor.
AB  - Prosečni prinosi breskve u zemljama sa razvijenom voćarskom proizvodnjom (Francuska, SAD, Grčka, Italija) su oko 20 t/ha, dok su prosečni prinosi breskve u Srbiji značajno manji. Jedan od osnovnih preduslova za postizanje redovnih i visokih prinosa breskve i nektarine u Srbiji je uvođenje novih sistema gajenja i uzgojnih oblika. Istraživanja su obavljena u ogledno-proizvodnom zasadu Instituta PKB Agroekomik u Padinskoj Skeli. Podizanje zasada je obavljeno sadnjom i kalemljenjem sejanaca vinogradske breskve na stalnom mestu na rastojanju 3,5 x 1 m i 3,5 x 1,5 m , i formiranjem uzgojnog oblika kosa vođica. Standardni deo ogleda je podignut sadnjom jednogodišnjih sadnica na rastojanju 4 x 2 m uz primenu fuzeta, i 4 x 4 m uz primenu kotlaste krune. Ispitivan je uticaj gustine sadnje na bujnost stabala breskve Autumn Glo i klona nektarine Stark Red Gold. U radu su prikazani trogodišnji rezultati ispitivanja parametara bujnosti. Gustina sadnje je ispoljila značajan uticaj na prečnik debla podloge, prečnik debla sorte i visinu ispitivanih stabala.

AB  - The influence of agril foil utilization on the parameters of production value (flowering and ripening time, yield and physical fruit traits) and fruit quality attributes (chemical properties, total antioxidant capacity and sensorial traits) of strawberry cultivar 'Clery' were studied. Investigations were carried out during 2009. on the private strawberry field located in Grocka. Strawberry plants covered with agril foil weighing 19 g/m2 at the beginning of March 2009. with goal to stimulate their intensive growth and to provide frost protection during the flowering season. Earlier flowering and ripening time were registered in cv 'Clery' grown under agril foil (03.04. and 01.05., respectively), but also mentioned phenological phases lasted longer. A positive influence of agril foil was observed in number of fruits per plant (40,4), however better results regarding yields and physical fruit properties were obtained without foil applying. In this case, higher yield obtained per plant (1.029,9 g) can be explained by larger fruits registered on the plants without agril foil (29,8 g). The soluble solids content ranged from 7,5% (control) to 8,10 % (with agril foil). The same trend can be observed with total phenolic content achieving higher value in the fruit of cv 'Clery' grown under agril foil (2,25 mg GA/g FW). Consequently, the highest total antioxidant capacity, which is of importance not only for maintaining the nutritional value and sensorial fruit quality, but also because of considerable health benefits was also obtained in cv 'Clery' with agril foil utilization.
AB  - U radu je ispitivan uticaj primene agril termozaštitne tkanine na parametre proizvodne vrednosti (fenologija cvetanja i zrenja, rodnost i fizičke osobine ploda) i kvaliteta ploda (hemijske osobine i antioksidativni kapacitet ploda) sorte jagode 'Clery'. Ispitivanja su izvedena 2009. godine, u privatnom zasadu jagode koji se nalazi u Grockoj. Agril termozaštitna tkanina težine 19 g/m2 postavljena je preko biljaka početkom marta 2009. godine sa ciljem ubrzavanja njihovog rasta i zaštite u fenofazi cvetanja tokom kritičnog perioda sa mogućim pojavljivanjem mraza. Raniji početak fenofaze cvetanja (03.04.) i zrenja (01.05.) registrovan je kod sorte 'Clery' pod agrilom, ali i duže trajanje pomenutih fenofaza. Pozitivan uticaj primene agril termozaštitne tkanine registrovan je i kod broja plodova po bokoru (40,4), međutim u pogledu visine prinosa i fizičkih osobina ploda bolji rezultati su ostvareni bez primene agrila. Zahvaljujući većoj masi ploda registrovanoj u kontrolnoj varijanti (29,8 g) ostvaren je i nešto veći prinos po bokoru (1.029,9 g) u poređenju sa prinosom dobijenim pod agrilom (960,1 g), ali značajnost razlika u dobijenim vrednostima nije ustanovljena. Sadržaj rastvorljivih suvih materija u plodu bio je 7,5% u kontroli i 8,1% u tretmanu sa agrilom. Nešto viši sadržaj ukupnih fenola takođe je registrovan u plodu sorte 'Clery' pod agrilom (2,25 mg GA/g sveže mase ploda), kao i viša vrednost antioksidativnog kapaciteta ploda (1,63 mg asc/g sveže mase ploda). Značaj antioksidativnog kapaciteta ploda se ogleda ne samo u očuvanju hranljive vrednosti i senzoričkog kvaliteta ploda, već i u zdravstvenoj korisnosti za ljudski organizam.

AB  - Due to the importance of obtaining almond cultivars adapted to the agroecological conditions of Serbia, in the period 2005-2006 pollen viability and self-(in)compatibility in 19 almond genotypes selected from the seedling population on Slankamen hill, were studied. All analyzed almond genotypes had good (50-70%) or high (over 70%) pollen germination. The study of self-(in)compatibility was done by monitoring of the fruit set in the field and observing self-pollen growth by fluorescence microscopy. Self-incompatibility was confirmed in all the 19 genotypes by both methods. Pollen tube penetration was stopped mostly at the upper third of the style of all genotypes, with characteristic irregularities.
AB  - U cilju stvaranja sorti badema prilagođenih agro-ekološkim uslovima Srbije u periodu 2005.-2006. godine proučavana je klijavost polena i auto (in)kompatibilnost 19 genotipova badema odabranih iz populacije sejanaca na Slankamenačkom bregu. Svi ispitivani genotipovi badema imali su dobru (50-70- %) ili visoku klijavost polena (preko 70%). Ispitivanja auto (in)kompatibilnosti su obavljena praćenjem zametanja u poljskim uslovima i metodom fluorescentne mikroskopije. Auto inkompatibilnost je u oba slučaja bila izražena kod svih 19 genotipova. Kod svih genotipova polenove cevčice su zaustavljale rast najdalje u gornjoj trećini stubića uz karakteristične petlje, zadebljanja i krivudanja.

AB  - Isoenzyme polymorphism was studied in 20 almond (Prunus amygdalus Batsch.) genotypes, selected in the region of northern Serbia (Vojvodina). Five enzyme systems: alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), formate dehydrogenase (FDH), glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH), malate dehydrogenase (MDH) and shikimate dehydrogenase (SDH) were studied using the method of polyacrilamide gel electrophoresis. Three systems (FDH, GDH and SDH) were found to be polymorphic. This polymorphism allowed unique identification of five genotypes, while the remaining 15 genotypes were divided into five groups. Cluster analysis (UPGA method) was used to construct a dendrogram on which two clusters with different number of genotypes could be separated. Obtained results indicate that isoenzyme polymorphism in almond is higher than previously found. Studied enzyme systems, FDH, GDH and SDH, can be used to identify genetic variability in almond.
