AB - Significant genotype x environment interaction for quantitative traits, such is grain yield, reduces the usefulness of genotype means, over all environments, for selecting superior genotypes. AMMI model is a valuable statistical tool in identifying systemic variation contained in the interaction effect. Obtained data could be applied in maximizing yield potential in every environment based on both narrow and wide genotype adaptability, without the necessity of developing breeding programs for smaller targeted environments. Precise assortment of superior genotypes, with the assistance of AMMI model, leads to the better recommendation of newly bred hybrids, and thus increasing maize grain yield in a targeted environment. In this research genotype x environment interaction and yield stability of 36 maize hybrids of FAO 300-700 maturity group was investigating. The trial was set according to Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). Data were processed in order to obtain average estimates of grain yield, and yield stability was assessed by the method of AMMI analysis. The highest average grain yield was achieved in 2011 (11.62 t/ha), and the lowest in the most stressful and dry 2012 (6.90 t/ha). In the region Loznica L2 the highest average yield was noticed (13.81 t/ha), while at L7 (Sremska Mitrovica) average grain yield was the lowest (6.97 t/ha). Results of AMMI analysis gave precise recommendation for production of maize hybrids in certain environments, by determining winning areas of hybrids H20, H11 and H36. Medium early maturing and high yielding hybrids (H11 and H20) are therefore considered more favorable for production in environments with lower precipitation, while high yielding and more stable hybrids H21 and H35 are suitable for a wider range of environments. Hybrid H36 (FAO 700) showed its full potential at L2, and L3 which did not suffer from a lack of moisture. This hybrid also expressed its best potential in environments with favorable conditions.

AB - Twenty-seven maize inbreds (12 commercial and 15 developing lines) from Maize Research Institute breeding program were subjected to microsatelite analysis. The aim was genetic diversity determination, establishing relationships among tested lines and assigning them to heterotic groups according to molecular marker data. Number of alelles detected was 97, with an average of 3.23. Major allele frequency was in a range from 0.33 to 0.82 (average 0.55). The highest value for observed heterozygosity was 10% for several developing lines. Mean values for gene diversity and PIC were 0.56 and 0.48, respectively. Frequency-based distances were calculated using Roger's coefficient and average value of 0.57 indicates high genetic diversity in analyzed maize inbreds. Distance matrices were subjected to cluster analysis and PCA. Multivariate analysis methods showed considerable concurrency with pedigree data. Results of analysis with 30 microsatellite markers could be useful for defining/redefining heterotic groups but should be complemented with field testing data.

AB - Characterisation of bean genotypes, particularly local landraces is important for ongoing breeding programs, especially for drought tolerance. Susceptibility to drought is emphasized when bean is grown as a stubble crop and sown at the middle of summer. The aim of this study was to compare variability of ten bean genotypes to optimal (25 degrees C) and higher (30 degrees C) temperatures in combination with optimal (80%) and reduced (40%) field water capacity (FWC), from the point of growth (root and shoot length and fresh matter accumulation) and thermodynamic parameters of free energy (calculated parameter after drying at 60 degrees C, 105 degrees C and 130 degrees C) during the early seedlings stage. Significant and positive correlation between root length and fresh matter with free energy at symplast and chemically bound water occurred under temperature stress (i.e. 30 degrees C). Root growth and elongation were affected by drought stress, i.e. under a combination of high temperature (30 degrees C) and water deficit (40% FWC). Based on higher energy consumption, the ability of shoot to continue a growth in stressful conditions could be possible to achieve, as was confirm through significant and positive correlation between evaluated growth parameters in shoot and free energy of free water. It could be concluded that most of the examined dry bean accessions expressed some sensitivity to stress applied. Among genotypes tested, local landrace zecak expressed lesser susceptibility to stresses applied. Accession Maksa was more tolerant to changes at cytoplasmic level, while Medijana and Sataja 425 expressed root i.e. shoot stress tolerance. Those accessions could be considered as potentially drought tolerant genotypes.

AB - Six maize inbred lines for which we assumed that have a similar genetic BACKGROUND: were selected for the study. Inbred lines were crossed according to incomplete diallel design and fifteen hybrid combinations were obtained. Hybrid combinations and their parental lines were used in our study. The objective of the study was to examine genetic polymorphism of parental lines, as well as to determine relationships between SSR genetic distance and values of high parent heterosis and specific combining abilities for grain yield. By using 19 SSR primers we classified inbred lines in two groups. First cluster consists of inbred lines L1, L2, L3, L4 and L5, while inbred line L6 formed second cluster, indicating different heterotic BACKGROUND: in comparison to the other five inbred lines. The Spearman's correlation coefficients between SSR based genetic distance and specific combining abilities for grain yield had a value of (r=0,53*), while positive correlation were also found between genetic distance and high parent heterosis (r=0,57*).

AB - Herbicide application in seed maize requires special attention due to their larger sensitivity than hybrid maize. The aim of study was to examine and define the sensitivity/tolerance of the five maize inbred lines with different susceptibility to herbicides (belonging to different heterotic groups), based on alterations of secondary metabolites (phenolics, protein sulfhydryl groups, phytic and inorganic phosphorus). Two groups of herbicides: triketons (mesotrione and topramezone) and sulfonylureas (rimsulfuron and foramsulfuron) were tested. Lines from independent heterotic group, which were sensitive to herbicides expressed visible damages together with significant reduce in grain yield, mainly induced by sulfonylurea herbicides. Parallel with that, significant increase in phenolics, phytic and inorganic phosphorus, as well as drop in protein sulfhydryl groups were observed in their leaves. Tolerant lines (belonging to Lancaster group) had mainly insignificant grain yield reduce, also with lesser variations in sulfhydryl groups, content of phytic and inorganic phosphorus, as well as increase in phenolics content. Among examined secondary metabolites, phytate is the main factor, contributing to herbicide tolerance in maize lines. Owing to lesser yield decrease and variation in content of examined secondary metabolites, expressed in treatments with triketone herbicides, they usage could be safe in maize lines.

AB - Plus-hybrid effect refers to a combined effect of cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) and xenia in maize (Zea mays L.) It could be used in commercial production by growing a mixture of 80% CMS hybrid and 20% of another fertile hybrid. The aim of this research was to examine individual and combined CMS and xenia effects on two hybrids widely grown in Serbia. Sterile and fertile versions of ZP 1 and ZP 2 hybrids (three-way; Iodent x Lancaster dents) were used as females, while ZP 1, ZP 2, ZP 3, ZP 4, and ZP 5 (three-way or single cross; Iodent (BSSS) x Lancaster dents) were used as pollinators. All of them belong to medium maturity group. The trial was set up at one location in Serbia (Zemun Polje) in 2009, 2010, and 2011. Molecular analysis of the five genotypes was done using simple sequence repeat (SSR) primers. Plus-hybrid effect on grain yield ranged from -6.2% to 6.2%; on thousand kernel weight from -1.7% to 5.2%; on number of kernels per area from -1.0% to 8.0%. The poor response could be due to a use of three-way instead of single cross hybrids in S type of sterility. Modified Rogers' distance between hybrids was in the range 0.211 to 0.378 and was not relevant for the effect, which depended mostly on the sterile hybrid genotype and the fertile hybrid pollinator ability. This approach should be more suitable for female hybrids with slightly poorer performance, already being produced on a sterile base.

abstract = "Plus-hybrid effect refers to a combined effect of cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) and xenia in maize (Zea mays L.) It could be used in commercial production by growing a mixture of 80% CMS hybrid and 20% of another fertile hybrid. AB - The study was conducted on the in vitro pollen germination at 26 degrees, 28 degrees, 32 degrees and 35 degrees C for 24h of male parental lines, pollen tube growth in vivo in cross pollination of female and male parental lines that make couples in four hybrids: ZP 504 su (female ZPPL 51 x male ZPPL 67); ZP 677 (female ZPPL 17 x male ZPPL 201); ZP 704 (female ZPPL 109 x male ZPPL 79), ZP 611 k (female ZPPL 126 x male ZPPL 105), and the open pollination of female parental lines of the above mentioned hybrids. Pollen germination in vitro and pollen tube growth dynamics in vivo showed different genotypic specificities with the tests applied. The obtained results were discussed in the context of reproductive biology of ZP maize lines and aimed to create the preconditions for successful management and direction of the process in practice -seed production in certain environmental conditions.

AB - Geneticists have been trying to explain adaptability and stability of a genotype in terms of a desirable combination of alleles expressed via epistasis. Stability determined in one set of data is very often stability of a genotype to a prevalent stress factor in a moment of carrying out the experiment. However, grain stability of a certain genotype can be a result of different factors, such as tolerance to drought, or to some important diseases and pests. Yield and yield stability of 15 maize hybrids were observed in 24 environments. The level of the interaction effect of studied maize hybrids was identified by the AMMI analysis, while a number of bands positively related to yield and stability of studied maize hybrids were identified by a genetic characterization by RAPD markers. Bands positively related to yields were present to a greater extent in parents originating from the BSSS population, while bands positively related to stability were more present in parents originating from the Lancaster population.
AB - Gentičari pokušavaju da objasne adaptabilnost i stabilnost genotipa u smislu poželjne kombinacije alela ispoljenih kroz epistazu.

AB - Eight maize inbred lines of different cycles of selection, originating from synthetic populations BSSS and BSCB1, were observed in the present study. The aim of the study was to evaluate inbreds and to determine which ones have the greatest relative values of favourable alleles for the improvement of the kernel row number in the elite single cross maize hybrid. Based on the estimated estimators: mu G, UBND, PTC and NI, it was determined that the greatest number of favourable dominant alleles for the improvement of the kernel row number was detected in the inbred lines B73(C-5) and B84(C-7) originating from the synthetic population BSSS and in the inbreds B91(C-8) and B90(C-7) originating from the synthetic population BSCB1. These inbreds are of the later cycles of recurrent selection and have proven to be better donors of favourable alleles than inbreds of earlier cycles of selection. The rank correlations among used estimators were positive and highly significant, while the highest values of correlations for the kernel row number were determined between mu G and PTC, mu G and UBND and PTC and NI. The greatest kernel row number was determined in the hybrid B73(C-5) x B84(C-7).

AB - Efficacy of maize breeding program based on maize grain and choice of breeding method depend on effects of genes included in expression of this trait. The objective of this study was to determine genetic parameters for grain yield using generation mean analysis (GMA) in two maize single-cross hybrids with one parent in common. Dominance gene effects were the most important in the inheritance of the grain yield. Significant values of two-gene epistasis were obtained. Interaction between dominant genes was in most instances of duplicate type, and was associated to a smaller effect of dominant genes. Less importance was estimated for epistatic effects between additive genes and additive and dominant genes which varied a large degree depending on the hybrid under consideration and on the environment. Higher values obtained for the interaction with the environment of the dominant in comparison to additive genes showed that it is not possible to predict with greater confidence the performances of the grain yield in both hybrids, so that successful estimation of the value of each inbred line can be derived only based on its performance in the particular hybrid combination.

AB - It is generally known that a phenotype is formed on the basis of the capacity of its genotype affected by environmental factors. Yield stability is statistically expressed through the GxE interaction. The interaction is a part of the trial variation that includes the factor of the genotype and the factor of the environment. The presence of the qualitative interaction significantly makes difficult the selection of the best genotypes in the process of breeding. As long ago as the early 1960s, many researchers noticed that the application of linear regression could, in many cases, define adaptability and stability of a genotype. However, in cases when data are not well adjusted to the linear model, better results can be gained by the application of the multivariate models (PCA, AMMI, GGE). The estimated maize hybrid stability was compared in this study by linear (Finlay and Wilkinson and Eberhart and Russell models) and multivariate statistical models (AMMI model). Very similar results were obtained by all three models. It was probably due to one dominant factor in the hybrid x environment interaction (different precipitation sums for the environments and the length of the growing season for hybrids). The advantage was given to the AMMI model, as the model with one axis analyses the interaction equally well as linear models, while the model with two axes extracted another part of systemic variation of the interaction effect not adjusted to the linear model.
U ovim istraživanjima izvršeno je poređenje procene stabilnosti hibrida kukuruza pomoću linearnih (Finlay i Wilkinson, Eberhart i Russell, modeli) i multivarijacionog modela statistike (AMMI model).

abstract = "It is generally known that a phenotype is formed on the basis of the capacity of its genotype affected by environmental factors. The advantage was given to the AMMI model, as the model with one axis analyses the interaction equally well as linear models, while the model with two axes extracted another part of systemic variation of the interaction effect not adjusted to the linear model., Opšte je poznato da se fenotip formira na osnovu kapaciteta svog genotipa pod uticajem faktora spoljašnje sredine. Prisustvo kvalitativne interakcije značajno otežava izbor najboljih genotipova u procesu selekcije. Još su ranih šezdesetih godina istraživači primetili da se primenom linearne regresije može, u velikom broju slučajeva, definisati adaptabilnost i stabilnost genotipa. Međutim, u slučajevima kada podaci nisu dobro prilagođeni linearnom modelu bolji rezultati se postižu primenom multivarijacionih modela (PCA, AMMI, GGE). U ovim istraživanjima izvršeno je poređenje procene stabilnosti hibrida kukuruza pomoću linearnih (Finlay i Wilkinson, Eberhart i Russell, modeli) i multivarijacionog modela statistike (AMMI model). Sva tri modela su dala veoma slične rezultate. Prednost se ipak daje AMMI modelu jer model sa jednom osom podjednako dobro kao i linearni modeli analizira interakciju, dok je model sa dve ose izdvojio još jedan deo sistematske varijacije interakcijskog efekta koji nije prilagođen linearnom modelu.",

AB - Due to an unknown mechanism of genetic control and great environmental effects in the process of trait expression, morphological markers are often considered unreliable indicators of genetic relationships. Morphological characterization of 19 maize inbreds was done according to the UPOV descriptor, while molecular characterization was performed with RAPD markers. Based on the estimation of phenotypes according to the UPOV descriptor, the squared Euclidean distance was calculated and then, on the basis of this distance, a morphological similarity matrix was formed. Jaccard similarity coefficients were calculated on the basis of presence absence of bands on gels in the RAPD analysis. When data were standardized, the comparison between morphological and genetic similarity of observed maize inbreds was done. The correlations varied from 0.47 (inbred L 217) to 0.76 (inbred L 86). The average value of correlations for all studied inbreds amounted to 0.64. Furthermore, the results of the cluster analysis for both markers, molecular and morphological, had high concordance with pedigree data. Environmental effects were decreased in morphological markers (according to the UPOV descriptor) by rescaling a measurement scale from a scale to an ordinal level of measurement and in such a way results of morphological markers approached results of molecular markers in the estimation of the genetic distance (GD) of maize inbred lines.
