AB - This study was aimed at investigating the phytochemical composition and antioxidant capacity of rhizomes, above-ground vegetative parts and flowers of three Iris species: Iris humilis Georgi, Iris pumila L. and Iris variegata L. UHPLC-Orbitrap MS analysis was used for determination of phytochemical profile. Total pigments, phenolics, flavonoids, soluble sugars and starch content as well as ABTS antioxidant capacity were also determined. In total, 52 phenolics compounds were identified with 9 compounds (derivatives of iriflophenone, apigenin C-glycosides, luteolin O-glycoside, isoflavones derivatives of iristectorigenin, dichotomitin, nigracin and irilone) never reported before in Iris spp. Differences in phenolic composition profile, pigments, soluble sugar, starch, total phenolics and flavonoids content and total antioxidant capacity were found among Iris species and different part of plants. Significant correlation between total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity was determined. The obtained results are comparable with those obtained for medical plants. These findings could be useful for fingerprinting characterization of Iris species and estimation of possible use in pharmaceutical industries.

AB - Total catch-and-release (C&R) is a regulatory measure implemented for maintaining the self-sustainability of stocks encountering strong fishing pressure. The River Detinja is a tailwater with very strong fishing pressure, managed for more than a decade by C&R. That fishing regime was questioned by a new fishery manager, without the justification provided. The only available data for examining the brown trout growth were those from catches of two fly fishermen over five consecutive years. Only in one year did the average catch of one fisherman slightly surpass the legal limit for taking brown trout, and in none of years was the average size of pooled catches close to it. Survival data were similar, suggesting the stability of the brown trout stock through the period of investigation. Asymptotic length L-infinity gradually increased and coincided with the growth speed phi and maximal yield length L-opt values. In spite of that, the high fishing pressure and low proportion of brown trout above both the legal taking limit of >= 25 cm SL and L-opt values in catches strongly support the retention of C&R as a regulatory measure on the River Detinja.

AB - The multidisciplinary socio-economic study of fisheries in the bordering part of the Danube River between Serbia and Croatia (at the following sites: Apatin, Baka Palanka, Bako Novo Selo, Bezdan, and Sombor) that was performed in order to investigate various aspects of fish resource utilization (management, policy of protection and exploitation of freshwater fishery resources, present fisheries legislation, catch statistics), was realized during 2004 and 2005. Data were collected via survey with a structured interview. Socio-economic circumstances, together with ecological factors, have had an influence on the fish stock and number of commercial fishermen. Awareness of the occurring problems, both economic and ecological ones, is apparent, regardless of whether it is assessed in the field of commercial or recreational fishing. Fishery sector in Serbia is in a prolonged process of transition, with the enforcement of fishing regulations, but also the lack of control that leaves space for illegal commercial fishing. The statements, consciousness, experience and behavior of commercial fishermen represent a good basis for planning the sustainable development of fishing in this section of the Danube River.
