AB - In recent years, in order to protect the environment and food safety, intensive work has been done on the development of biological fungicides, nematicides and herbicides, as well as products based on biological agents and medicinal herbs for plant protection. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of the application of Bacillus spp. and calendula extract on tomato yield. The experiment was carried out during the 2023 growing season in the field conditions using SP - 109 genotype of tomato, selected at the Institute for Vegetable Crops Smederevska Palanka. Tomato seedlings were produced in a greenhouse and were planted in the field at the end of May. The experiment was laid out in a random block system, with four replications. The number of plants per main plot was 36. The distance between the rows was 50 cm and between the plants in the row 25 cm. Five treatments were applied three times during the vegetable season (T1 - Bacillus spp. isolate 1, T2 - Bacillus spp. isolate 2, T3 - Calendula extract, T4 - Fungicide, T5 - Control). The number of fruits per plant in treatments T1 and T4 was 29. It was statistically significantly higher compared to the number of fruits per plant in treatments T2, T3 and T5 (20, 21, 20). Also, the fresh weight of fruits per plant was significantly higher in treatments T1 and T4 (847.7 and 868.5) compared to treatments T2, T3 and T5 (686.7, 680.4 and 634.4). Results of this investigation indicate that the application of biological agents, specifically selected Bacillus spp. isolate 1 (T1), can have effects comparable to fungicides, as evidenced by the achieved tomato yield. The future research will include investigations of the impact of Bacillus spp. isolates and calendula extract on the nutritional characteristics of tomato fruits.

AB - As a tobacco producer, Serbia has to deal with large amounts of leftover tobacco stalks after harvesting. One option for this type of biomass is to burn it, but burning is not encouraged in Serbia, since the levels of its combustion products have not been investigated yet. The aim of this study was therefore to determine the elemental composition, ash and nicotine content, heat values, and composition of gaseous combustion products of tobacco stalk briquettes and to see if their mixing with other types of biomass available in Serbia could improve their ecological profile. We made 11 different types of briquettes: six of pure raw materials, including burley tobacco stalks, sunflower head remains, wheat straw, corncob, soy straw, and beech sawdust and five by mixing tobacco stalks with these other raw materials in a 50:50 mass ratio. All briquettes meet the ecological criteria regarding the emission limits for nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide. Nicotine content in flue gases (<10 mg/kg) is far below the maximum level allowed by the European Union. Heat values of all biomass samples are acceptable, although lower than those specified for solid biofuels (≥16.0 MJ/kg), save for corncob and beech sawdust and their mixtures with tobacco stalks. Our findings therefore encourage the use of tobacco stalks as a viable biofuel. © 2023 Maja Malnar et al., published by Sciendo.

AB - Through the vegetative experiments performed in semi-controlled conditions the influence of calcium containing metallurgical slag, a by-product from the Steel factory, as well as the effects of selected commercial lime materials and fertilizers, on macro (N, P, K, Ca, Mg) and trace elements (Fe, Zn, Cu, Cd) content in common spinach, cabbage and radicchio grown on Stagnosol (a soil with high acidity), was studied. P was determined by spectrophotometer, K-by flame emission photometry and N-using elemental CNS analyzer Vario EL III. In the determination of Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, Cu and Cd, atomic absorption spectrometry was used. The results of the paper indicate that all lime materials studied, along with the studied metallurgical slag, showed positive effects on the content of main and beneficial biogenic macroelements in aboveground biomass of the tested vegetables. There is a noticeably tendency of a little increase in the content of P in all tested plants and Ca in spinach and cabbage in the treatment with mineral fertilizer, manure and metallurgical slag in relation to the control. Regarding the concentration of trace metals in tested vegetables, there was not found higher accumulation of Fe in tested plants in the treatments where metallurgical slag was applied in spite of its significant content in this liming material. As for Cd, its concentrations were within the safety limits and allowed concentrations in all the treatments, which is a highly desirable outcome.

AB - In this paper, unique vineyard plots are selected, according to suitability of topographic and chemical parameters in municipality of Krupanj. Separation of vineyard plots was performed using GIS, which enables processing, analysis and presentation of spatial data. Benefits of GIS tools in the preparation of this work were highlighted during the presentation of topographic factors from DEM and through the use of geostatistics in processing spatial data. By analyzing only the topographic parameters, it was concluded that 0.97 km2 of municipality area has ideal conditions for growing vines, but only 0.0039 km2 according to both topographic and chemical parameters. The applied methodology allows fast and reliable determination of sites that are ideal for growing grapes. This gives a basis to municipal authorities for realistic assessment of significance and conditions, as well as further developments planning.
