AB - Pollination and temperature are predominant factors affecting the progamic phase of sexual plant reproduction. In light of climate change and the emergence of increasing temperatures, new knowledge is necessary to encourage fruit breeding programmes to develop cultivars adapted to these changes, as well as to find the best incompatibility relationships with the aim of achieving high fruit quality and yield. This research was conducted to reveal the effect of pollination treatments and temperature on the progamic phase and fruit set in three European plum (Prunus domestica L.) cultivars (‘Jojo’, ‘Hanita’ and ‘Katinka’) resistant/tolerant to Sharka virus using fluorescent microscopy. Reproductive parameters (flowering overlapping, pollen germination, number of pollen tubes in the upper part of the style and locule of the ovary, dynamics of pollen tubes growth and initial and final fruit set) were investigated in vivo under different pollination treatments (cross, open and self-pollination). The influence of different temperature regimes (20 °C, 23 °C and 26 °C) on the progamic phase was also observed under cross and self-pollination. The pollination treatments significantly influenced the number of pollen tubes in the style and ovary, as well as dynamics of pollen tubes in different regions of pistil. Pollen tubes showed better growth in different crossing combinations compared to open and self-pollination. Higher temperatures accelerated pollen tube growth and reduced the time they need to reach ovules. Generally, ‘Jojo’ appeared to be the best pollenizer among the examined cultivars, while ‘Katinka’ exhibited the best response of pollen tube growth to various temperature regimes. The differences observed between growth of the pollen tubes in each genotype-temperature combination revealed that certain crossing combinations were better adapted to higher temperatures so this can be taken into account as one of the adjustments to climate change. The ability of cultivars to respond to high temperatures in the progamic phase can also be helpful for breeding programs in developing new cultivars better adapted to different temperature conditions.

AB - Pollen grain micromorphological characterisation of four plum (Prunus domestica L.) genotypes from two different breeding programmes (Fruit Research Institute, Serbia, and Hohenheim, Germany) was performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The studied characteristics were pollen size and shape, colpus length, mesocolpium width as well as exine characteristics. All genotypes had tricolpate pollen grains and striate exine ornamentation, with more parallel longitudinal ridges. The most significant differences among the analysed genotypes concerned the length of the pollen grain and exine sculpturing. The genotypes 'Pozna Plava', 'Presenta' and 'Čačanska najbolja' had the largest pollen grains (> 57 µm), whereas 'Hanita' showed a smaller pollen size, below 54 µm. 'Pozna Plava' had perprolate pollen in the equatorial view (L/W ratio 2.06), while the other three genotypes had prolate shaped pollen. By analysing the pollen morphological characteristics of the plum varieties in this paper, primarily the shape, size, length of colpi and, most importantly, the sculpture of the exine, each variety showed a specificity which can be used together with other morphological characteristics for description and characterisation.

AB - Unusual growth of pollen tubes in different pollination variants (self-, cross- and open pollination) was observed in the ovary of six promising plum (Prunus domestica L.) genotypes developed at Fruit Research Institute (FRI), Čačak (hybrids 38/62/70, IV/63/81, 32/21/87, 34/41/87 and 22/17/87 and cultivar ‘Nada’) in Serbia. The cross-pollination was performed using the pollen of plum cultivar ‘Čačanska Lepotica’. The occurrence of unusual pollen tubes growth in the ovary was studied over the three-year period (2009‒2011) using fluorescent microscopy method. The appearance of unusual growth of pollen tubes in the ovary of all studied genotypes during the whole examination period was recorded in the region of the obturator and the micropyle, with or without further growth of the pollen tubes to the nucellus.
Several different types of unusual growth of pollen tubes were observed, i.e. the growth of pollen tubes in opposite direction in relation to the nucellus, the curling up of pollen tubes, the branching of pollen tubes, as well as combinations of some of the above mentioned types of specific pollen tubes growth. Average values of all analyzed genotypes showed that the highest frequency of the ovaries with unusual growth of pollen tubes was determined in the open pollination variant (7.89%), followed by the cross-pollination variant (6.27%), while the smallest frequency was found in the self-pollination variant (3.12%).

AB - The paper presents two-year results of the study (2008-2009) of the initial and final fruit set in sweet cherry cultivars 'Kordia', 'Summit', 'Karina' and 'Regina' grown under agroecological conditions of Čačak, which were subjected to different types of pollination. Each of the above mentioned cultivars was investigated under cross-pollination and self-pollination conditions (16 combinations); for each combination 300 flowers were emasculated and pollinated. The study of the initial and final fruit set under the conditions of open pollination was concurrently performed. The characteristics of flowering phenophase as well as in vitro pollen germination of the stated cultivars were monitored. Generally, in all the cultivars fruit set was higher in the first year of study. 'Karina' and 'Regina' had high fruit set rate in both years, in cross- and open pollination. 'Regina' proved to be the best pollinator, especially for 'Karina', and demonstrated the best in vitro pollen germination in comparison with the other studied cultivars.
Sorta 'Regina' je takođe imala i najbolju klijavost polena in vitro.

AB - The initial fruits set as well as the correlation between the dynamics of pollen tubes growth and the numbers of initially fruits set in cv Čačanska Lepotica were studied in this investigation were studied. The study included three variants of fertilization, i.e. open-, cross-(pollen of Čačanska Najbolja), and self-pollination. The largest percentage of the fruits set was recorded in the cross-pollination variant in both years. The lowest percentage of the fruits set in the first year was in selfpollination variant, while in the second year it was recorded in open-pollination variant. The results for the coefficient of linear correlation in both years show high correlation between the dynamics of pollen tubes growth and the number of initially fruits set in cross and self-pollinated variants. In open-pollination variant coefficient of correlation was in the rang of low correlation. The largest coefficient of linear correlation between the dynamics of pollen tubes growth and the numbers of initially fruits set was in cross-pollination variant (with cv Čačanska Najbolja), which is another positive confirmation effect of cross- pollination on the fruits set.

In open-pollination variant coefficient of correlation was in the rang of low correlation. The largest coefficient of linear correlation between the dynamics of pollen tubes growth and the numbers of initially fruits set was in cross-pollination variant (with cv Čačanska Najbolja), which is another positive confirmation effect of cross- pollination on the fruits set., U radu je utvrđen broj inicijalno zametnutih plodova kao i korelacija između dinamike rasta polenovih cevčica i broja inicijalno zametnutih plodova kod sorte šljive Čačanska lepotica u tri varijante oprašivanja: slobodno, samo- i stranooprašivanje (polenom sorte Čačanska najbolja).
