The wild raspberry in Serbia: an ethnobotanical study

AB  - An ethnobotanical survey of the traditional use of the wild raspberry (Rubus ideaus) was conducted on nine sites in the regions of southwest (SWS) and southeast (SES) Serbia. The regions studied belong to mountainous rural areas in Serbia, mainly populated by Serbian people of the Orthodox faith. In total, 93 respondents were interviewed about the medicinal, food and cosmetic uses of the wild raspberry. In terms of plant parts in traditional use, the leaf and fruit are known to be used frequently. The dry leaf is more commonly used in the SES (78%) than in the SWS (25%) region. In the SWS region, the most frequent use of the wild raspberry leaf is linked to gastrointestinal disorders and prostate inflammation. In the SES region, the leaves are mostly used for the prevention and healing of gynecological disorders during both pregnancy and lactation. The local population of the SWS region uses the fruits mainly for the preparation of syrup juice (92%), fruit preserves (42%) and in desserts (62%), while in the SES area the fruits are most frequently used for the preparation of nonalcoholic (97.4%) and alcoholic beverages (35.9%). Our results provide some novel information on the use of the wild raspberry in Serbia and in the Balkans, such as for the treatment of prostate inflammation, use during breastfeeding and to alleviate inflammation of the eyes.

Genetic structure of wild raspberry populations in the Central Balkans depends on their location and on their relationship to commercial cultivars

AB  - The red raspberry (Rubus idaeas L.) is one of the most important fruit species in Serbia; there are currently approximately 11000 ha under cultivation. Wild red raspberry populations can be an important source of genes for breeding new raspberry varieties. This study was carried out to determine the genetic variability of wild populations, as well as their relationship with the most common cultivated cultivars using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers. In this study were included 128 individuals from seven wild populations and seven cultivar specimens from a nursery ('Mekeer', 'Willamette', 'Polka', 'Polana', 'Loganberry', Tayberry, 'Black Jewel'). Four AFLP combinations yielded a total of 247 polymorphic bands in 135 R. idaeus specimens. Analysis of AFLP markers showed that the cultivars are dearly distinct from wild populations. Population P4 (Mt. Ozren) had the highest gene diversity, the highest ntunber of private markers and the highest rarity index. Analysis of molecular variance among and within wild populations showed that the most of the genetic diversity was attributable to differences between individuals within populations. A Mantel test showed that differences in altitude play the crucial role in structuring of the genetic diversity of red raspberry populations. Altitude contributed more to the population differentiation than spatial distance. Populations of wild raspberry from the territory of Serbia are characterized by high diversity, and should be protected and used as a resource in selection and breeding processes for the production of new varieties, with improved properties in terms of better yield and stronger resistance to external factors.

Phytochemical and Antioxidant Properties of Fresh Fruits and Some Traditional Products of Wild Grown Raspberry (Rubus idaeus L.)

AB  - The current study investigated and compared phytochemical and antioxidant activity of fresh fruit and some traditional products of Rubus idaeus grown in mountain region of Serbia. The total organic acid, total sugar content, total phenolics, flavonoids, tannins, anthocyanins and vitamin C were evaluated. The antioxidant activities were evaluated using two antioxidant systems 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS). The fresh fruit contained highest amount of vitamin C (46.62 mg AA g(-1)) and total organic acids (882.22 mg CA g(-1)). The sweet preserve had highest content of total phenolics (200.83 mg GA g(-1)), flavonoids (12.85 mg RU g(-1)) and tannins (39.11 mg g(-1)). The juice had the highest total anthocyanin content (107.22 mu g mL(-1)) and total sugar content (25 degrees Brix). The best antioxidant activity in ABTS assay had juice (IC50 = 4.87 mu mol TE g(-1)), followed by sweet preserve (IC50 = 5.14 mu mol TE g(-1)), almost identical to standard gallic acid. In the DPPH free radical scavenging assay, sweet fruit preserve showed significant better antioxidant activity (IC50 = 41.27 mu g mL(-1)) compared to juice (IC50 = 106.07 mu g mL(-1)) and fresh fruit (IC50 = 294.79 mu g mL(-1)). Our results indicated promising perspectives for usage of R. idaeus fresh fruits and traditional products studied with considerable levels of vitamin C, bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity.
