AB  - Motivation: Indicator values are numerical values used to characterize the ecological niches of species and to estimate their occurrence along gradients. Indicator values on climatic and edaphic niches of plant species have received considerable attention in ecological research, whereas data on the optimal positioning of species along disturbance gradients are less developed. Here, we present a new data set of disturbance indicator values identifying optima along gradients of natural and anthropogenic disturbance for 6382 vascular plant species based on the analysis of 736,366 European vegetation plots and using expert-based characterization of disturbance regimes in 236 habitat types. The indicator values presented here are crucial for integrating disturbance niche optima into large-scale vegetation analyses and macroecological studies. Main types of variables contained: We set up five main continuous indicator values for European vascular plants: disturbance severity, disturbance frequency, mowing frequency, grazing pressure and soil disturbance. The first two indicators are provided separately for the whole community and for the herb layer. We calculated the values as the average of expert-based estimates of disturbance values in all habitat types where a species occurs, weighted by the number of plots in which the species occurs within a given habitat type. Spatial location and grain: Europe. Vegetation plots ranging in size from 1 to 1000 m2. Time period and grain: Vegetation plots mostly sampled between 1956 and 2013 (= 5th and 95th quantiles of the sampling year, respectively). Vegetation-soil relationships on consolidated limestone of Serbia

AB  - Understanding the relationships between soil features and grassland vegetation have significant importance for agriculture and nature conservation. The aim of this study was to analyse the soil physical and chemical characteristics influencing plant species composition and species richness of grassland vegetation developed on the consolidated limestone in eastern Serbia. The analyses have been carried out on 22 phytosociological relevés, corresponding mixed soil samples (0-10 cm depth) and 8 soil profiles. The collected soils samples were classified according to the World Reference Base for Soil Resources (2015). Numerical classification distinguished two grassland vegetation types: Balkan endemic steppe alliance Saturejion montanae and steppe fescue grasslands on deep calcareous soils, alliance Festucion valesiacae. The grasslands of both vegetation types are developed on Leptosols and Phaeozems. According to the results of the Detrended Correspondence Analysis, the most important soil parameters affecting the species composition of steppe grasslands were humus, soil exchange capacity, the content of calcium, total acidity, base saturation, altitude, soil depth and pH.

AB  - Continental halophytic grasslands are known for performing of range of ecosystem services especially remarkable in the regions where they are much distributed – in arid and semi-arid areas. Continental halophytic grasslands of the Central and South-East Europe are not considered as favourable for arable farming, however, traditional animal husbandry plays a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity and preserving these natural habitats. The particular interest of this study is the assessment of the chemical composition of biomass and the quality of insufficiently studied halophytic grassland communities of the central Balkans. In addition, the differences in pastoral value were monitored along the geographical gradient, i.e., between grasslands situated in the Pannonian plain (grasslands of Alliance Puccinellion limosae) and those distributed on the south Serbia (Alliance Festucion pseudovinae). The study was carried out at 18 representative sites, focusing on the saline grasslands of the two distinct regions – on the north and on the south of Serbia. The obtained results show that the halophytic grasslands have satisfying quality characteristics (average values: dry matter - 93.67%, crude protein - 8.66%, cellulose - 30.36%, crude fat - 2.27%) compared with other studied grasslands of saline habitats. There were no significant differences in quality and chemical composition of grasslands of the two regions, despite differences in floristic composition, indicating that salinity is the key determinant for pastoral value of the halophytic vegetation. The certain variations were attributed to the specific floristic composition related to ecological conditions and halophytic community characteristics.

AB  - The number of naturalized (i.e. established) alien species has increased rapidly over recent centuries. Given the differences in environmental tolerances among species, little is known about what factors determine the extent to which the observed size of the naturalized range of a species and hence the extent to which the observed richness of naturalized species of a region approach their full potential. Here, we asked which region- and species-specific characteristics explain differences between observed and expected naturalizations. Location: Global. Time period: Present. Major taxa studied: Vascular plants. Methods: We determined the observed naturalized distribution outside Europe for 1,485 species endemic to Europe using the Global Naturalized Alien Flora (GloNAF) database and their expected distributions outside Europe using species distribution models. First, we investigated which of seven socio-economic factors related to introduction pathways, anthropogenic pressures and inventory effort best explained the differences between observed and expected naturalized European floras. Second, we examined whether distributional features, economic use and functional traits explain the extent to which species have filled their expected ranges outside Europe. Results: In terms of suitable area, more than 95% of expected naturalizations of European plants were not yet observed. Species were naturalized in only 4.2% of their suitable regions outside of Europe (range filling) and in 0.4% of their unsuitable regions (range expansion). Anthropogenic habitat disturbance primarily explained the difference between observed and expected naturalized European floras, as did the number of treaties relevant to invasive species. Species of ornamental and economic value and with large specific leaf area performed better at filling and expanding beyond their expected range. Main conclusions: The naturalization of alien plant species is explained by climate matching but also by the regional level of human development, the introduction pressure associated with the ornamental and economic values of the species and their adaptation to disturbed environments.

AB  - Biodiversity is traditionally studied mostly at the species level, but biogeographical and macroecological studies at higher taxonomic levels can provide valuable insights into the evolutionary processes at large spatial scales. Our aim was to assess the representation of vascular plant families within different vegetation formations across Europe. Location: Europe. Methods: We used a data set of 816,005 vegetation plots from the European Vegetation Archive (EVA). For each plot, we calculated the relative species richness of each plant family as the number of species belonging to that family divided by the total number of species. We mapped the relative species richness, averaged across all plots in 50 km × 50 km grid cells, for each family and broad habitat groups: forests, grasslands, scrub and wetlands. We also calculated the absolute species richness and the Shannon diversity index for each family. Results: We produced 522 maps of mean relative species richness for a total of 152 vascular plant families occurring in forests, grasslands, scrub and wetlands. We found distinct spatial patterns for many combinations of families and habitat groups. The resulting series of 522 maps is freely available, both as images and GIS layers. Conclusions: The distinct spatial patterns revealed in the maps suggest that the relative species richness of plant families at the community level reflects the evolutionary history of individual families. We believe that the maps and associated data can inspire further biogeographical and macroecological studies and strengthen the ongoing integration of phylogenetic, functional and taxonomic diversity concepts.

IMPACT OF ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS ON DIVERSITY AND WEED COMPOSITION IN THE NORTH-WESTERN BALKANS

AB  - Surveys of weed flora and vegetation of the western Balkan Peninsula (1939-2006) were used to study changes in diversity and species composition. Data from the sample plots were stored in TURBOVEG format. A large data set of arable weed flora and vegetation was compiled and analyzed with direct (CCA- Canonical Correspondence Analysis) and indirect ordination (DCA - Detrended Correspondence Analysis), regression and beta (2) diversity analysis. Five environmental variables (altitude, season, year, crop, phytogeographical region) were used to determine broad-scale changes in diversity and weed species composition. The expertise built on collaborations between the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Belgrade, Serbia and the Institute of Biology, Scientific Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Ljubljana, Slovenia, allowed the introduction of new approaches in study of weed flora and vegetation in Serbia and the North-Western Balkans. According to this study, we conclude that the importance of spatial factors (phytogeography) and type of crop among environmental factors for diversity and species composition in the NW Balkan. Comparing rank of importance of environmental variables on species composition shows a decrease of influence of crop type. Phytosociological data sets are valuable for detecting temporal trends, although inclusion of explanatory variables linked to management would help answer some specific agricultural questions. New knoweldge and accepted methods (multivariate anlasys in study of weed vegetation) were implemented in the research of national project (III 46008: Development of integrated management of harmful organisms in plant production in overcome resistance and improve food quality and safety), several research papers published in national and internationi journals and one PhD thesis.

A large data set of arable weed flora and vegetation was compiled and analyzed with direct (CCA- Canonical Correspondence Analysis) and indirect ordination (DCA - Detrended Correspondence Analysis), regression and beta (2) diversity analysis. Five environmental variables (altitude, season, year, crop, phytogeographical region) were used to determine broad-scale changes in diversity and weed species composition. The expertise built on collaborations between the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Belgrade, Serbia and the Institute of Biology, Scientific Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Ljubljana, Slovenia, allowed the introduction of new approaches in study of weed flora and vegetation in Serbia and the North-Western Balkans. According to this study, we conclude that the importance of spatial factors (phytogeography) and type of crop among environmental factors for diversity and species composition in the NW Balkan. Comparing rank of importance of environmental variables on species composition shows a decrease of influence of crop type. Phytosociological data sets are valuable for detecting temporal trends, although inclusion of explanatory variables linked to management would help answer some specific agricultural questions. New knoweldge and accepted methods (multivariate anlasys in study of weed vegetation) were implemented in the research of national project (III 46008: Development of integrated management of harmful organisms in plant production in overcome resistance and improve food quality and safety), several research papers published in national and internationi journals and one PhD thesis.",
