AB - The estrogenic mycotoxin zearalenone (ZEN) is a common contaminant of animal feed. Effective strategies for the inactivation of ZEN in feed are required. The ZEN-degrading enzyme zearalenone hydrolase ZenA (EC 3.1.1.-, commercial name ZENzyme®, BIOMIN Holding GmbH, Getzersdorf, Austria) converts ZEN to hydrolyzed ZEN (HZEN), thereby enabling a strong reduction in estrogenicity. In this study, we investigated the efficacy of ZenA added to feed to degrade ZEN in the gastrointestinal tract of three monogastric animal species, i.e., pigs, chickens, and rainbow trout. For each species, groups of animals received (i) feed contaminated with ZEN (chickens: 400 µg/kg, pigs: 200 µg/kg, rainbow trout: 2000 µg/kg), (ii) feed contaminated with ZEN and supplemented with ZenA, or (iii) uncontaminated feed. To investigate the fate of dietary ZEN in the gastrointestinal tract in the presence and absence of ZenA, concentrations of ZEN and ZEN metabolites were analyzed in digesta of chickens and rainbow trout and in feces of pigs. Upon ZenA administration, concentrations of ZEN were significantly decreased and concentrations of the degradation product HZEN were significantly increased in digesta/feces of each investigated animal species, indicating degradation of ZEN by ZenA in the gastrointestinal tract. Moreover, upon addition of ZenA to the diet, the concentration of the highly estrogenic ZEN metabolite α-ZEL was significantly reduced in feces of pigs. In conclusion, ZenA was effective in degrading ZEN to HZEN in the gastrointestinal tract of chickens, pigs, and rainbow trout, and counteracted formation of α-ZEL in pigs. Therefore, ZenA could find application as a ZEN-degrading feed additive for these animal species. © 2023 by the authors.

AB - Zooplankton is a very important source of natural food for larvae of many aquaculture species. In semi-intensive systems, which are the dominant type of carp production, many fish species feed on both zooplankton and zoobenthos as adults, while larvae and fry rely mostly on zooplankton. It provides them with high quality nutrients and other molecules such as proteolitic enzymes, hormones and growth factors, which support digestive processes in immature larval gut. Larviculture, especially start feeding of early larval stages, appear to be a critical point in fish culturing. However, artificial diets formulated for larvae show poor digestibility. Use of live feed of small dimensions, good nutritive characteristics and locomotion that provides visual stimulus, overcome that problem. Zooplankters commonly used for mass production as live feed for fish larvae are Rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis and B. calyciflorus) and brine shrimp (Artemia salina). Shortly after hatching, carp larvae are transferred to nursing ponds for further rearing. Ponds are previously prepared through agrotechnical measures in order to provide nutrient enrichment and stimulate production. During the first days of exogenous feeding, larvae consume only the smallest zooplankters such as Rotifers and naupliar larvae of Copepods, while later they move on to bigger pray as Cladocerans. However, due to variable environmental conditions, predation, competition or infections in earthen ponds, mortality in nursing ponds is often very high, reaching over 90%. Thereby, modern approach suggests rearing in indoor tanks in controlled systems and use of automatic feeding systems to provide precise portions of zooplankton.

AB - The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of different level of fat in diets on body dimensions and weight gain of carp fry. Fish diets contained 38% protein and 8,12 or 16% of fat. The experiment was carried out in triplicates, (3 tanks per treatment, 9 tanks in total) for 90 days at the Laboratory for Fish Nutrition, at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Agriculture. Every tank has a usable volume of 120 gallons of water and water flow of 0.34 Lmin-1. After adjusting fish to laboratory conditions, every tank was stocked with 29 fish, average weight 15.4 g. Based on data of body length and height of fish, obtained in 30- to daily intervals, statistical analysis showed that there were differences among fish from different treatments. Fish fed diets with 8% fat achieved 46.8% higher weight gain than fish fed with food containing 12% fat and 65.4% higher weight gain than fish fed with feed containing 16% fat. Additionally, fish fed with less fat in diet had a more elongated body form and less pronounced body height as well as lower values for fish condition. Based on obtained results, it can be concluded that the diet with lower level of fat is justifiable to use, both from an economic and consumer perspective.

AB - Production of fish in Serbia is insufficient despite of favorable climate properties. Dominant form of national aquaculture system is semi-intensive carp breeding. Except cereals, in the recent years extruded and pelleted feed are increasingly used for carp nutrition in Serbia. The aim of this study was to compare the lipid content and the fatty acid (FA) profile of carp (Cyprinus carpio) raised in carp fish farms with traditional breeding technology based on maize as well as complete extruded feed. Total lipids of fish fillets were extracted by accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) and FA profile was determined by gas-liquid chromatography equipped with flame ionization detector. Results were compared by multivariate data analysis. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of the total FA profile clearly differentiated carp according to diet. Carp fed maize contained higher amount of total lipids (8.59%) compared to carp fed extruded feed (4.71%). Content of saturated fatty acids (SFA) of two groups of carp was similar. Carp fed extruded feed had lower content of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) (42.43%) and higher content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) (32.56%) than carp fed maize (61.78%, 12.99%, respectively). A higher content of n-6 (27.99%) and n-3 (4.57%) PUFA as well as better n-3/n-6 PUFA ratio (0.16) were found in carp fed extruded feed than in carp fed maize (11.75%, 1.24%, 0.10, respectively). Obtained results reveal that diet significantly influence the quality of carp flesh. Lipid content significantly decrease and PUFA content as well as n-3 to n-6 ratio increase when using extruded feed.

AB - This manuscript describes the importance of using histological methods to assess the effects of feed on the liver and intestine of fish. Due to the constantly increasing world production of fish and other aquatic organisms, it is necessary to replace fishmeal and fish oil in diets with less expensive raw materials of plant origin. Due to the increased fiber content, increased presence of carbohydrates, antinutritional factors, and inappropriate content of amino acids and new compounds can have negative effects on the digestive system of fish and therefore on fitness, health and production characteristics of cultivated fish. The liver and intestines are the most important organs for the digestion and absorption of nutrients from feed. Therefore, monitoring histological structure of fish liver and intestine is the method of choice in assessing the effects of nutrient mixtures that use raw materials of plant origin. For both of these vital organs the normal histological structure and the most important results obtained by research are discussed. This paper presents a critical review of the histological methods used in research on feed effects. Results related to the negative effects of raw soy-based feed on the occurrence of enteritis in carnivorous fish species are discussed. The results point out that use of modern approach in fish pathology such as improved histochemical, stereological, scoring, and other analytical methods could be a beneficial approach in an accurate assessment of new feed effects on fish.

For both of these vital organs the normal histological structure and the most important results obtained by research are discussed. This paper presents a critical review of the histological methods used in research on feed effects. Results related to the negative effects of raw soy-based feed on the occurrence of enteritis in carnivorous fish species are discussed. The results point out that use of modern approach in fish pathology such as improved histochemical, stereological, scoring, and other analytical methods could be a beneficial approach in an accurate assessment of new feed effects on fish., U radu je prikazan značaj upotrebe histoloških metoda u proceni efekata hrane na jetru i crevo riba.

AB - Common carp (Cyprinus carpio) is one of the most widely cultured fish species in the world. It is predominantly cultivated in the Balkans in the semiintensive system that is based on the utilization of natural food from the fish pond and supplemental feed (cereals, pelleted and extruded feed). Currently, an intensified type of semi-intensive production is starting to be more present in Serbia, where cereals, as the most common supplemental feed, are replaced by concentrated feed that fill in the lack of proteins from carps' natural food in periods of its decreased production. The nutritional requirements for growth, reproduction and normal physiological functions of fish are similar to other animals, but generally fish need more proteins in their diet. Due to this, the efficiency in the use and utilization of proteins is more significant for fish than for other animals. The selection of supplemental feed in semi-intensive system of fish culture depends on the natural potential of the fish pond, culturing period, fish category, price and quality of feed.

AB - The aim of this study was to estimate heritability and genetic correlations between weight, length and height of common carp in Serbia (Cyprinus carpio L.) during 3-year growth period. The 50 families of common carp were produced in 2007 and used for the estimation of genetic parameters. The fish were measured at tagging for weight, length and height (W0, L0, H0), then during the first autumn (W1, L1, H1) and during the second autumn (W2, L2, H2). Based on univariate models heritability estimates were high for all traits (0.39, 0.34 and 0.45 for W1, L1 and H1, respectively) and also for the second production year (0.49, 0.47 and 0.44 for W2, L2 and H2, respectively). The genetic correlations were estimated using multivariate models and they were high between W1 and L1 and H1 (0.81 ± 0.06 and 0.91 ± 0.03 for L1 and H1, respectively), while between H1 and L1 were moderately correlated (0.54 ± 0.12). In the second production year genetic correlations were also high, between W2 and L2 and H2 (0.64 ± 0.09 and 0.74 ± 0.06, respectively), while between length and height they were lower (0.24 ± 0.15). Based on the current results improving growth rate of common carp through genetic selection is expected to be effective.

AB - The success of production in aquaculture depends on the water quality, the fish fry but also on the skillfulness of the producers in achieving a profitable production while applying the most optimal technology. One of the producer's dilemmas, when applying feed, is the dynamics of supplemental feeding of fish. This was the reason for carrying out an experiment at the laboratory for fish nutrition at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Belgrade (Serbia). In three experimental groups, during 60 days, carp weight in correlation to the dynamics of feeding was studied. For the first group, feed was available to fish once a day, during 60 min, the second group had feed available twice a day, during 60 min, and the third group had feed available during 12 hours continuously. The results showed that there was a significant difference in the weight between the three experimental groups. The weight of fish from the first group was 41.47%, for the second group was 50.42%, and for the third 87.79%, respectfully, in relation to the stocking ichthyomass. According to the t-test the average weight of the first and second group was not statistically different but they were very significantly lower from the average weight of fish that had feed available 12 hours daily.

AB - In the era of growing demand for sustainable usage of water, all types of aquaculture systems are under reconsideration. Until recently semi-intensive production was concerned to be one of the least polluting. Nowadays, this fact has been reassessed especially in many countries culturing carp in this way. One of the most significant influences on a fish pond ecosystem in semi-intensive carp production is changing its characteristics by adding low quality supplemental feeding. Therefore, the type of fish feed, its physical and chemical characteristics can considerably change the water quality of a fish pond. Aiming to analyze the effect of commonly used feeds (cereals, pelleted and extruded feed) in semi-intensive production on the water quality, an experiment was carried out at three fish ponds during one production season. Even though the results of physical, chemical and biological parameters showed that there were no statistically significant differences in the water quality between fish ponds with different supplemental feed, looking at the overall picture it could be concluded that the pond that had the lowest quality of feed (row cereals), having high organic mater and chlorophyll a during most of the trial period as well as the specific phytoplankton successions including potentially harmful blue-green alga, had consequently the lowest water quality.

AB - For several decades fish welfare has been subject of many researches, and the interest for this subject is connected with the fact that fish can feel pain and suffering. In addition to this stressors' mechanisms of action and their consequences are similar in mammals and fish. Assessment of welfare for farmed fish is based on the same principles as for terrestrial farm animals. However, special methods of collecting data are needed due to morphological characteristics of fish and properties of their environment. In the world and in our country, researches of different ways of fish welfare assessment are being conducted, especially based on non-invasive techniques such as monitoring of behaviour. In this paper a review of basic principles and methods used in assessment of farmed fish welfare is given.

AB - Assessment of water quality at Radmilovac estate near Belgrade that is used for irrigation of cultures and as a water supply for experimental fish farm and hatchery was performed by using aquatic invertebrates (zooplankton and macrozoobenthos) and fish gill histology as bioindicators. Two open wells and a stream were monitored during a three year investigation. A total of 25 and 31 species of zooplankton were found in open wells and 11 and 12 taxa of macrozoobenthos at two sites of stream Sugavac. The saprobity index (S) was used to evaluate the water quality of these four sites. Statistical analysis showed that site S2 was the most polluted, with Oligochaeta and Chironomidae larvae dominating. Overall, beta mesosaprobic organisms have been prevailing at all four sites indicating that the water was polluted at moderate levels. All analyzed fish gills showed predominantly normal structure. Identified histopathological changes of gill structure indicated mild and reparable alterations. The results obtained imply that these water resources can be used as a supply for carp fish farm. We suggest that the type of biological water assessment depends on waterbodies characteristics.

AB - Trout farming poses an increasing threat to quality of the water of clean highland streams. Research of this problem has focused primarily on changes in physico-chemical composition of the water and structure of the river bottom, and less on the effects on living organisms. In the present work, we investigated influence of the farm with the highest trout production in Serbia, the 'Riboteks' Trout Farm on the Trešnjica River, on its macrozoobenthos communities. Our investigations showed that the 'Riboteks' Trout Farm wastewaters caused a clear and statistically significant change of moderate intensity in all measured parameters describing the composition and structure of macrozoobenthos communities. These changes were most pronounced in the part of the watercourse closest to the influx of waste water (locality III) but remained statistically significant even 500 m downstream (locality IV) and were lost only about 3.5 km away from the influx of the farm's wastewater (locality V). The most pronounced were changes in the participation in total abundance of the Baetidae, Chironomidae, and Plecoptera. Additionally, results of the present work confirmed that the mass of fish on the trout farm is a parameter that adequately defines the strength of its action, above all the intensity of its influence on structure of the macrozoobenthos community.

AB - During the period from April to October in the production season of the year 2000, seven chemical parameters of the aquatic environment were analyzed twice a month for the amount of natural food (zooplankton and bottom fauna) on pond No. 4 at the Dubica Carp Farm in Banatska Dubica (Vojvodina, Serbia). Correlation between natural food and carp growth was analyzed as well. The investigations revealed negative correlation between the amount of natural food per kilogram of ichthyomass and pH (p lt 0.001, r = -0.875), electroconductivity (p = 0.0294, r = -0.673), COD (p = 0.0052, r = -0.782), total water hardness (p = 0.0186, r = -0.709), and carbonate water hardness (p = 0.0087, r = -0.758). However, statistically significant positive correlation was found between the biomass of natural food (g/kg of ichthyomass) and concentration of nitrates (p lt 0.01, r = 0.841) and phosphates (p = 0.0427, r = 0.640). Concerning components of natural food (zooplankton and bottom fauna), bottom fauna biomass had a very low production and showed no statistically significant correlation (p = 0.137, r = 0.491) with total natural food biomass whereas zooplankton biomass was very significantly correlated (p lt 0.001, r = 0.830) with the total amount of natural food, indicating that zooplankton was the dominant component of natural food at the investigated fish pond. The daily weight gain (%) of cultured fish was greatest at the beginning of the carp farming season, i.e., in April, when it comprised a value of 2.3%. After negative growth at the end of May (-0.2%), a gradual increase of weight gain was recorded until the beginning of September. By comparing the biomass of natural food with the daily weight gain (%) of carp, it was observed that the weight gain had a trend similar to biomass of natural food with a 15 day interval. This relationship was justified by positive statistical correlation (p = 0.006, R = 0.960). As zooplankton was the major component of natural food, fish relayed on it as the main protein source showed by a significant positive correlation (p = 0.034, r = 0.907).

AB - The species Helicopsyche bacescui in Europe has a disjunct area that is mainly situated south of 45 degrees N latitude and east of 22 degrees E longitude with an isolated smaller part in southwestern Hungary. Recent investigations on the territory of Serbia documented the presence of H. bacescui at 39 localities south of the Danube. The known area of the species is thereby enlarged by about 30%, while its western boundary is relocated by about 440 km. H. bacescui is primarily found in lowlands at elevations of less than 200 m above sea level, frequently in streams that periodically run dry. In Serbia, on the other hand, it is found in permanent highland streams at localities with average elevation of 467 +/- 35 m above sea level. The highest locality at which this species has been found is the spring of the Obudojevica (Western Serbia), which lies at an elevation of 1060 m above sea level. H. bacescui belongs to specific benthic communities that differ from typical macrozoobenthos assemblages found in similar habitats in Serbia by the pronounced dominance of Gammaridae, significant presence of Pisidium species, and absence of other groups of Trichoptera (above all, members of the family Hydropsychidae).

AB - Thirteen species of Trichoptera new for the fauna of Serbia were identified during investigation of macrozoobenthos in the watershed of the Southern Morava River in the period from 1998 to 2003 and in the Trešnjica River in 2003 and 2004. The species Rhyacophila torrentium Pictet, 1834; Rhyacophila glareosa McLachlan, 1867; Rhyacophila intermedia McLachlan, 1868; Glossosoma conformis Neboiss, 1834; Micropterna lateralis Stephens, 1874; Oecetis testacea Curtis, 1834; Micrasema longulum McLachlan, 1876; Chimarra marginata Linnaeus 1767; Cyrnus flavidus McLachlan, 1864; Brachycentrus subnubilus Curtis, 1834; Ecclisopteryx madida McLachlan, 1867; Melampophylax mucoreus Hagen, 1861; and Grammotaulius nigropunctatus Retzius, 1783 are new for the fauna of Serbia. The genera Chimarra, Melampophylax and Oecetis are new for the fauna of Serbia. Together with those registered for the first time, the number of Trichoptera species recorded to date in Serbia now comprises a total of 186.
Nove vrste za faunu Srbije su: Rhyacophila torrentium Pictet, 1834; Rhyacophila glareosa McLachlan, 1867; Rhyacophila intermedia McLachlan, 1868; Glossosoma conformis Neboiss, 1834; Micropterna lateralis Stephens, 1874; Oecetis testacea Curtis, 1834; Micrasema longulum McLachlan, 1876; Chimarra marginata Linnaeus 1767; Cyrnus flavidus McLachlan, 1864; Brachycentrus subnubilus Curtis, 1834; Ecclisopteryx madida McLachlan, 1867; Melampophylax mucoreus Hagen, 1861; Grammotaulius nigropunctatus Retzius, 1783.

AB - The quality of water at the Dubica Fish Farm was evaluated by the saprobiological method using the Pantle-Buck saprobity index, during one carp production cycle in the year 2000. By qualitative and quantitative analysis of the zooplankton community, bioindicator species were selected for evaluation of water quality. During the whole period of research, the saprobity index indicated class II water quality, which is suitable for rearing carp in a semi-intensive system as far as natural food is concerned. There was a general trend of decrease in the saprobity index from the beginning to end of the season, its values ranging from 2.05 do 1.77, and a gradual improvement of water quality towards the end of the season. This is partly a result of natural processes (terminated degradation of introduced organic matter as well as settlement of suspended matter introduced with the supply water) and partly a consequence of the application of ichthyological, agrotechnical, and hydrotechnical measures.

AB - Semiintensive carp production is based on two sources of food for fish proteins that are present in live food and carbohydrates that are provided from additional feeds. By consumption of secondary producers (zooplankton and bottom fauna) nutrients, main causer of water ecosystem eutrophication (phosphorus and nitrogen) is utilized. Unused nutrients (inorganic or organic compounds) are settled at the pond's bottom and through application of agrotechnical measures (natural drainage, winter killing, disking) fertility of the pond's bottom is increased. Semiintensive carp production based on live food as the main protein source fits into the concept of sustainable agriculture.

AB - Study of dynamics of zooplankton and bottom fauna secondary production during rearing of carp yearlings was carried out at the fish farm PKB "Ribarstvo", Baranda in 2002. Investigations were performed in four fish ponds (Z-2, Z-6, Z-16 and Z-22) of 0.33 ha area each. Zooplankton secondary production dynamics in all studied were similar, with maximal development in September and minimal in August. On the contrary to zooplankton production dynamics of bottom fauna did not show any similarity between studied ponds the mutual characteristic of all fish ponds was the small production of bottom fauna, except for high production of Molluscs in the pond No. 22, in the middle of September. Zooplankton as a natural fish pond component was absolutely dominant in the total quantity of available natural food, which was favorable, having in mind the fact that in the early stages of carp fry zooplankton has the main role in their nutrition.
