Effect of non-genetic factors on longevity traits in Simmental cows

AB  - The effects of fixed non-genetic factors (farm, season of birth, year of birth, total number of lactations) and a continuous non-genetic factor (age at first conception) on the expression and variability of longevity traits such as age at culling, length of productive life, days in milk and cow efficiency index were investigated in 2548 Simmental cows in three farming areas. Based on the model used for the analysis of the effects of non-genetic factors, including the environment and cow age at first conception, on the expression and variability of longevity traits, the overall means for age at culling, length of productive life, days in milk and cow efficiency index were 2445.21±17.49 days, 1562.55±17.71 days, 1094.17±12.28 days and 58.68±0.32%, respectively. The effect of farming area, year of birth and lactation group on longevity traits was very significant (P lt 0.01), whereas the effect of season of birth was significant (P lt 0.05). Age at first conception had a highly significant (P lt 0.01) effect on age at culling, length of productive life and cow efficiency index, and no significant effect on days in milk (P>0.05). Based on the model used, the coefficients of determination (R2 ) were very significant (P lt 0.01) for all longevity traits, and ranged from 0.898 for age at culling to 0.959 for days in milk.
AB  - Uticaj fiksnih (farma, sezona i godina rođenja, ukupan broj laktacija) i kontinuelnih (uzrast pri prvoj oplodnji) sistematskih faktora na ispoljenost i varijabilnost osobina dugovečnosti kao što su uzrast pri izlučenju, dužina produktivnog života, ukupan broj muznih dana i indeks iskorišćavanja krava proučavan je na uzorku od 2548 simentalskih krava raspoređenih na tri odgajivačka područja. Na osnovu primenjenog modela za analizu uticaja sistematskih faktora okoline i uzrasta krava pri prvoj oplodnji na ispoljenost i varijabilnost osobina dugovečnosti opšti prosek za uzrast pri izlučenju, dužinu produktivnog života, ukupan broj muznih dana i indeks iskorišćavanja krava iznosio je 2445,21±17,49 dana, 1562,55±17,71 dana, 1094,17±12,28 dana i 58,68±0,32%. Uticaj odgajivačkog područja, godine rođenja i grupe laktacija na osobine dugovečnosti bio je vrlo značajan (P lt 0.01), dok je uticaj sezone rođenja krava bio značajan (P lt 0.05). AB  - An analysis of the phenotypic exposure and variability of lifetime milk production and milk fat and the content of milk fat of lifetime milk production was performed in 241 cows of Simental race distributed in three breeding areas (Čačak n = 67, Zlatibor n = 123 and Rudno n = 51).
Descriptive statistical analysis found that the average lifetime milk production and milk fat in all three breeding areas was 16081 and 627.2 kg with a variability of about 40%. The average number of lactations during the productive life of cows was 3.73 and ranged from 4.31 in the area of Čačak to 3.45 in the Rudna area. The variability was high and on average it was about 35%, which resulted from a wide variation interval ranging from only 3 to 10 lactation per head. The average content of lifetime productions milk fat was 3.91%. The content of milk fat of lifetime milk production, unlike milk production of milk and milk fat, is more influenced by genetic factors, which is why it is characterized by a very low variability of only 2.30%.
AB  - Analiza fenotipske ispoljenosti i varijabilnosti životne proizvodnje mleka i mlečne masti i sadržaja mlečne masti životne proizvodnje mleka sprovedena je kod 241 krave simentalske rase raspoređenih na tri odgajivačka područja (Čačak n=67, Zlatibor n=123 i Rudno n=51).
Deskriptivnom statističkom analizom ustanovljeno je da je prosečna životna proizvodnja mleka i mlečne masti na sva tri odgajivačka područja iznosila 16081 i 627,2 kg sa varijabilnošću od oko 40%. Prosečan broj laktacija u toku produktivnog života krava iznosio je 3,73 i kretao se od 4,31 na području Čačka do 3,45 na području Rudna. Varijabilnost je bila visoka i u proseku je iznosila oko 35%, što je posledica širokog intervala varijacije koji se kretao od svega 3 pa do 10 laktacija po grlu. Prosečan sadržaj mlečne masti životne proizvodnje mleka iznosio je 3,91%. Sadržaj mlečne masti životne proizvodnje mleka, za razliku od životne proizvodnje mleka i mlečne masti,više je pod uticajem genetskih faktora zbog čega se odlikuje dosta niskom varijabilnošću od svega 2,30%.

AB  - Behavior, welfare and protection of cattle are an integral part of organic livestock breeding. Organic production considers animals being cultivated in accordance with their basic needs, supporting most of their normal forms of behavior (inborn and acquired), while respecting the basic principles of well-being and protection. Organic as an alternative to conventional production respects the importance of behavior, welfare and protection of animals and is therefore  in line with natural animals needs.
Being familiar and understanding the behavior of animals is of multiple importance for successful breeding of cattle regardless to applied production system (intensive, extensive or organic).
Animal welfare and protection is a complex biotechnological issue and contains an aspect of science (biology, veterinary medicine, agronomy)and aspects of ethics. The welfare implies the quality of life and harmonious relationship of animal with its environment; as such, it became present in conventional and unavoidable topic in organic production in livestock breeding.
AB  - Ponašanje, dobrobit i zaštita gajenih životinja predstavljaju integralni deo organskog stočarstva. U organskoj proizvodnji životinje se moraju uzgajati u skladu sa njihovim bazičnim potrebama, odnosno na način u kome će ispoljiti najveći deo njihovih normalnih oblika ponašanja (urođenih i stečenih) uz poštovanje osnovnih načela dobrobiti i zaštite. Uvažavajući značaj ponašanja, dobrobiti i zaštite životinja organska proizvodnja, kao alternativa konvencionalnoj, upravo je usklađena sa prirodnim potrebama životinja.
Poznavanje i razumevanje ponašanja životinja od višestrukog je značaja za uspešno gajenje domaćih životinja bez obzira o kom sistemu proizvodnje je reč (intenzivni, ekstenzivni ili organski). 
Dobrobit i zaštita životinja je jedno kompleksno biotehničko pitanje i u sebi sadrži kako aspekt nauke (biologije, veterine, agronomije), tako i aspekte etike. Dobrobit podrazumeva kvalitet života i harmoničan odnos životinje sa okruženjem te je kao takva postala aktuelna u konvencionalnoj i nezaobilazna tema u organskoj proizvodnji u stočarstvu.

AB  - The effect of systematic and continuous environmental factors on 4% fat corrected milk (FCM) yield in 2805 Simmental cows over whole and standard lactations was evaluated using the general linear model. The test systematic or fixed factors included the effect of farm or breeding area, calving season, year of birth, season of birth, lactation group and interactions between year of birth and season of birth, breeding area and calving season, and breeding area and lactation group. The continuous factor analysed was the effect of age at first conception. The effect of breeding area, lactation group and calving season on 4%FCM yield over whole and standard lactations was found to be very highly significant (P lt 0.001). The interactions of fixed i.e. systematic factors involved in the model, including those between year and season of birth, breeding area and calving season, and farm and lactation group had a very highly significant effect (P lt 0.001) on 4% FCM yield over both whole and standard lactations. The age at first conception, as a continuous factor, showed a very highly significant effect (P lt 0.001) on 4% FCM yield over both whole and standard lactations. The model used to correct the 4%FCM yield over whole and standard lactations for the effect of systematic factors was very highly significant (P lt 0.001). The variance of the model accounted for 15.93% and 21.55% of the total variance in 4% FCM yield over whole and standard lactations, respectively. The resulting coefficient of determination (R2) in 4% FCM yield was 0.159 over whole lactations and 0.216 over standard lactations.
AB  - Analiza uticaja sistematskih i kontinuelnih faktora okoline na proizvodnju 4% mast-korigovanog mleka u celim i standardnim laktacijama kod 2805 krava simentalske rase izvršena je primenom opšteg linearnog modela. Od sistematskih odnosno fiksnih faktora analiziran je uticaj farme ili odgajivačkog područja, sezone telenja, godine i sezone rođenja, grupe laktacija i interakcije između godine i sezone rođenja, odgajivačkog područja i sezone telenja i odgajivačkog područja i grupe laktacija. Od kontinuelnih faktora posmatran je uticaj uzrasta pri prvoj oplodnji. Uticaj odgajivačkog područja, grupe laktacija i sezone telenja na proizvodnju 4%MKM u celim i standardnim laktacijama bila je vrlo visoko značajna (P lt 0.001). Interakcije fiksnih, odnosno sistematskih faktora, uključenih u model, kao što su interakcija između godine i sezone rođenja, zatim odgajivačkog područja i sezone telenja i farme i grupe laktacija, na proizvodnju 4%MKM kako u celim tako i u standardnim laktacijama imale su vrlo visoko značajan uticaj (P lt 0.001). Uzrast pri prvoj oplodnji, kao kontinuelni faktor, statistički vrlo visoko značajno (P lt 0.001) je uticao na proizvodnju 4% mast-korigovanog mleka i u celim i u standardnim laktacijama. Primenjeni model za korekciju proizvodnje 4%MKM u celim i standardnim laktacijama na dejstvo sistematskih faktora bio je vrlo visoko značajan (P lt 0.001). Udeo varijanse modela u ukupnoj varijansi kretao se od 15.93% kod proizvodnje 4%MKM u celim laktacijama do 21.55% kod proizvodnje 4%MKM u standardnim laktacijama. Dobijeni koeficijenti determinacije (R2) kod proizvodnje 4%MKM u celim i standardnim laktacijama iznosili su 0.159 i 0.216.

AB  - In scientific literature, fertility is generally assessed through age at first conception, gestation length, length of service period, calving interval, and calf birth weight.
Determination of the effect of particular non-genetic factors on the above traits is a vital step in cattle breeding and reproduction. 
Length of calving interval is largely governed by the effect of non-genetic factors, viz. fixed effects generally including the effect of breeding region, season of birth, calving season, year of birth, calf sex and their interactions, and continuous or regression effects including age at first conception or age at calving. 
The effect of fixed and continuous non-genetic factors on length of calving period was analysed in 245 Simmental cows (907 calving interval) in three breeding regions, with the effect of season of birth as a fixed factor and cow age at first conception as a continuous factor being highly significant (P  lt  0.01), and that of season of calving being significant (P  lt  0.05). The effect of breeding region, year of birth, parity group or age and calf sex was statistically non-significant (P > 0.05).
AB  - U literaturi plodnost se najčešće posmatra preko uzrasta pri prvoj oplodnji, trajanja bremenitosti, servis perioda, intervala između telenja i mase teladi pri rođenju. 
Determinisanje uticaja pojedinih sistematskih faktora na pomenute osobine od velike je važnosti u procesu odgajivanja i reprodukcije goveda.
Dužina intervala između telenja definisana je najvećim delom dejstvom paragenetskih faktora, od kojih kao fiksni uticaji najčešće se pominju uticaj odgajivačkog područja, sezone rođenja i telenja, godine rođenja, pola teladi i njihove interakcije, a od kontinuelnih ili regresijskih uzrast krava pri prvoj oplodnji ili telenju.
Analiza uticaja fiksnih i kontinuiranih negenetskih faktora na dužinu odnosno trajanje intervala između telenja izvršena je kod 245 krava (907 međutelidbenih intervala) simentalske rase raspoređenih na tri odgajivačka područja pri čemu je uticaj sezone rođenja kao fiksnog i uzrasta krava pri prvoj oplodnji kao kontinuiranog faktora bio visoko značajan (P lt 0.01) dok je uticaj sezone telenja na dužinu međutelidbenog intervala bio značajan.(P lt 0.05). Uticaj  odgajivačkog područja, godine rođenja, grupe partusa odnosno starosti kao i pola teladi nije bio statistički značajan (P>0.05).

AB  - The effect of paragenetic factors on 4% FCM yield in complete and standard lactations was studied in 241 Simmental cows.
Farm, lactation number, birth season, calving season, their interactions and age at first conception were evaluated for their effect on the trait. 
The mathematical and statistical analysis of the data obtained, i.e. least square means, standard error, analysis of variance and coefficient determination, were calculated using the General Linear Model procedure. The effects of farm, lactation group and year of birth on the trait were very highly significant (P lt 0.001). Birth season and calving season had no statistically significant effect (P> 0.05) on the production of 4% FCM, either in whole or in standard lactations. The interaction between birth season, calving season and year of birth was variable and ranged from insignificant to very significant.
Age at first conception produced a significant (P lt 0.05) and non-significant (P>0.05) effect on 4% FCM yield in complete and standard (bxy=0.693ns) lactations, respectively.
AB  - Uticaj paragenetskih faktora na proizvodnju 4%MKM u celim i standardnim laktacijama ispitivan je na uzorku od 241 krave simentalske rase.
Na ispoljenost ove osobine ispitivan je uticaj farme, broja laktacija, sezone rođenja i telenja, njihovih interakcija i uzrasta pri prvoj oplodnji.
Matematičko-statistička analiza podataka, odnosno sve potrebne veličine, kao što su sredine najmanjih kvadrata, standardne greške, analiza varijanse i koeficijenti determinacije izračunate su u programskoj proceduri Opšti linearni model (GLM procedura). Uticaj farme, grupe laktacija i godine rođenja na ispoljenost ove osobine bio je vrlo visoko značajan (P lt 0.001). Sezona rođenja i telenja nije statistički značajno uticala (P>0.05) na proizvodnju 4%MKM kako u celim tako i standardnim laktacijama. Uticaj interakcije između sezone rođenja,, sezone telenja i godine rođenja bio je varjabilan, i kretao se od nesignifikantnog do vrlo značajnog. Uzrast pri prvoj oplodnji statistički značajno (P lt 0.05) je uticao na proizvodnju 4%MKM u celim laktacijama, dok njegov uticaj na proizvodnju 4%MKM u standardnim laktacijama nije bio signifikantan (P>0.05).
