AB  - The first few weeks after broilers hatch are the period of most intense bone growthand development, and the time when they are most susceptible to the in fluence ofvarious external and internal factors. Research in the recent decades has focused on theinvolvement of melatonin in bone development during early life in chickens. Melatoninrelease from the pineal gland has a circadian rhythm, with the highest levels circulatingduring the night and decreasing during the light phase of the day. Various types oflighting are used in intensive broiler production. In this study, the effects of melatoninon the tibial structure and growth of broilers were investigated. During the first twoweeks of life, two groups of chickens were kept under continuous light and fed thesame diet, with the experimental group receiving melatonin in the amount of 0.03 g/kg of feed. The results obtained showed that the addition of melatonin in the diet hadpositive effects on the development and growth of the tibia, which was expressed ina signi ficantly greater thickness of the diaphysis and cortical bone of the diaphysis,higher breaking force and higher values of alkaline phosphatase activity. The corticalbone mineral density of the tibia did not differ signi ficantly between the groups ofchicken.

AB  - Intensive broiler chicken production involves different lighting regimes, which affects a natural cycle of secretion of melatonin, a hormone included in multiple physiological processes in a bird's body. This research aimed to determine the effects of dietary melatonin supplementation during the first two weeks of broiler chickens' life, bred under constant 24 h lighting, on their health and some hematological, biochemical, and production parameters. The study lasted 6 weeks. Three hundred and twenty 1-day chickens were divided into two groups (control-C and experimental-M), with four replications and 40 chickens in each replica. In the first two weeks (the first phase of the study), a continuous lighting mode 24L: 0D was applied. Group M was receiving a diet supplemented with 30 mg/kg synthetic melatonin only during the first phase. Group C had a diet without melatonin supplementation throughout the whole study. Melatonin addition had a statistically significant effect (P<0.01) on the mean values of body weight and daily weight gain at the end of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th week. The chickens of the experimental group have had a significantly higher value of the European Production Efficiency Factor (EPEF) (P<0.05). The results presented in this paper indicate a direct benefit in stress relief in broilers and a value of the organism's antioxidant system promotion, manifested by improved production performance and fattening efficiency. © 2022, Ankara University. AB  - BACKGROUND:  Growing population demands more animal protein products. Pork remains one of the traditional and relatively sustainable types of meats for human consumption. In this paper, life-cycle assessment was performed using data from 12 pig farms. In parallel, a survey on the consumption of pork meat products was conducted analyzing responses from 806 pork meat consumers. The study aims to provide a quantitative calculation of six environmental footprints associated with the consumption of pork meat products in Serbia by analyzing data from pig farms and a pork meat consumption survey. RESULTS Results revealed that pork meat production is responsible for the emission of 3.50 kg CO2(e)kg(-1)live weight, 16.1 MJ(e)kg(-1), 0.151 mg R11(e)kg(-1), 31.257 g SO(2e)kg(-1), 55.030 g PO(4e)kg(-1)and 3.641 kg 1.4 dB(e)kg(-1). Further calculations reveal that weekly emissions of various environmental potentials associated with an average consumer of pork meat products in Serbia are estimated at values of 4.032 kg CO(2e)week(-1), 18.504 MJ(e)week(-1), 0.17435 mg R11(e)week(-1), 35.972 g SO(2e)week(-1)and 63.466 g PO(4e)week(-1). CONCLUSIONS Results show that, on the one hand, pork products are responsible for environmental production impacts that mainly occur on farms while, on the other hand, consumption is characterized with high meat inclusion rates. As a leverage strategy it is recommended for producers to concentrate on lowering the production impacts rather than trying to reach consumers for sustainability conciseness.

Change of antlers morpho-metric parameters and total trophy score in roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L.) in relation to age

AB  - The aim of this study was to determine the change in the value of morpho-metric parameters of antlers and the total trophy score in relation to the age of roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L.). The study was conducted on 228 roe deer trophies from the "Barajevska reka" hunting ground in Serbia, aged one to seven years. From the second to the fourth year, the growth of antlers was the most intense, and the differences compared to one year old animals were significant (P  lt 0.001). The highest average length of the branches was monitored in six years old animals (22.4 ± 2.05 cm), with significant differences (P  lt 0.001) compared to younger animals, except for the three years old animals (P>0.05). From the second to the fifth year, a gradual increase in antler weight (from 192.2 ± 30.41 g to 221.9 ± 61.86 g) and antler volume (from 74 cm3 to 90 cm3 ) was observed, with the highest values of antler weight (291.8 ± 58.43 g and 319.1 ± 98.89 g, respectively) and antler volume (123.8 cm3 and 121.2 cm3) in six and seven year old animals. Overall trophy scores increased from year one to year seven (42.6 ± 7.86 vs 97.4 ± 27.40), with differences in trophy scores for animals aged six and seven years significantly greater than for animals aged one to five years (P  lt 0.001). The highest quality antlers have six and seven year olds, at which time their hunting should be conducted.
AB  - Cilj rada je bio da se utvrdi promena vrednosti mernih elemenata ocene parogova i ukupne ocene trofeja u odnosu na uzrast srndaća (Capreolus capreolus L.). Istraživanje je obavljeno na 228 trofeja srndaća iz lovišta "Barajevska reka" u Srbiji, uzrasta od jedne do sedam godina. Od druge do četvrte godine rast rogovlja je bio najintenzivniji, a utvrđene razlike su bile signifikantne (P lt 0,001) u odnosu na jednogodišnje jedinke. Najveća prosečna dužina grana parogova je zabeležena u periodu oko šeste godine (22,4±2,05 cm), pri čemu su utvrđene razlike bile signifikantne (P lt 0,001) u odnosu na mlađe jedinke, osim u odnosu na jedinke u starosti od tri godine (P>0,05). AB  - This review paper aims to give an overview of the literature data on common behavioral and health problems in broiler chickens and laying hens and to explain their interrelation and relation to the rearing system. In the initial part, the mechanism of arising of the most common forms of abnormal behavior and the way they affect the poultry are briefly described. Furthermore, the possibility of poultry to fulfill behavioral needs in different rearing systems and some of the consequences to the birds in the case of their inability to meet their needs are displayed. The influence of the main microclimate and space factors is also discussed, as well as the occurrence of some infectious, parasitic and production diseases in poultry rearing systems. The welfare problems of poultry are complexes and most often caused by the system design and its improper use. Continuous work on improving rearing systems is as important as better informing the producers and the public on poultry welfare problems.

Anatomical and histological characteristics of the lungs in the ground squirrel (spermophilus citellus)

AB  - The aim of this work was to study the topography, morphology, vascularisation, histology and innervation of the lungs in the ground squirrel (Spermophilus citellus) and compare these data with those concerning the rat, mole rat, rabbit and mouse. The research was carried out on 15 animals. It was revealed that the right lung has four lobes (cranial, middle, caudal and accessory lobes), while the left lung is not divided into segments. The functional vessels are a. pulmonalis dextra et sinistra and vv. pulmonales (5-6), while the nutritive vessels of the lungs are a. bronchoesophagea dextra and v. bronchoesophagea dextra. Histological tissue sections of the lungs revealed that the wall of terminal bronchioles contains no cartilage and the mucosal epithelium is pseudostratified, cubic and ciliated. Clara cells (club cells, bronchiolar exocrine cells) are present but have no cilia. The lung alveolar diameter is 37 mu m on average, and the thickness of the alveolar wall and the interalveolar septa is 1.38 mu m. Destruction of the alveolar walls, accumulation of erythrocytes in the capillaries of alveolar septa and destruction of the cytolemma of the capillary endothelium were detected. In addition, connective tissue fibres and peripheral nerves were detected by silver impregnation.

Keel bone damage in laying hens reared in different production systems in Serbia

AB  - The European Union in 2012 banned conventional battery cages for the welfare reasons. However, transition to new housing systems uncovered some new problems, such as keel bone damage (KBD), which also could endanger welfare of laying hens. Although KBD is a research topic which attracts a growing attention in the EU, in Serbia it is still rather unknown phenomenon, even among the scientific and professional community. This research is the first attempt to determine the prevalence of KBD in laying hens in housing systems currently existing in Serbia. The results of conducted monitoring show presence of KBD on all observed farms, except the organic one. The occurrence of KBD was at an acceptable level (from the standpoint of hen welfare) in the free-range system, enriched cages without equipment and conventional battery cages (4%, 3% and 1%, respectively), while in the fully equipped enriched cages it was high (39%). One could assume that this high prevalence of KBD in this system is a consequence of a long roosting on a metal perches.
AB  - Evropska unija je, zbog obezbeđenja dobrobiti živine, 2012. godine zabranila držanje nosilja u baterijskim kavezima. Međutim, prelazak na nove sisteme držanja doveo je i do nekih novih problema, kakav je oštećenje grudne kosti (OGK), koje takođe može da ugrozi dobrobit živine. Iako je oštećenje grudne kosti istraživačka tema koja u EU privlači sve veću pažnju, u Srbiji je ovo još uvek relativno nepoznat pojam, čak i u naučnim i stručnim krugovima. Ovo istraživanje predstavlja prvi pokušaj da se u Srbiji utvrdi prisustvo oštećenje grudne kosti kod kokošaka nosilja gajenih u različitim sistemima. Dobijeni rezultati pokazuju da je oštećenje grudne kosti prisutno u svim ispitivanim sistemima držanja, osim u organskom. Relativno nizak procenat oštećenja grudne kosti detektovan je kod kokošaka na ispustu, kokošaka u obogaćenim kavezima bez opreme i u konvencionalnim kavezima (4,3 i 1% respektivno). Najveći procenat oštećenja grudne kosti detektovan je kod kokošaka u obogaćenim kavezima sa kompletnom opremom (39%). Može se pretpostaviti da je ovako visok procenat oštećenja grudne kosti u ovom sistemu držanja posledica dugog sedenja kokošaka na metalnim sedalima.

Influence of litter size on growth and structure of m. semitendinosus in newborn piglets and slaughter pigs

AB  - Modern meat production has to meet the requirements of profitability, while meeting the demands of consumers in terms of meat quality at the same time. Huge scientific work has been done in order to find balance between quantity and quality of meet. Most authors agree that piglets of lower birth weight have less muscle fibers within muscle, grow slower, compensating the muscle growth with increase of muscle fiber diameter and accumulating carcass fat. In recent years, selection in pig production has been directed towards increase of piglet number per litter. Since the inverse relation of litter size and birth weight has been well documented, the purpose of this work was to investigate the possible effects of litter size as a factor on pig growth and m. semitendinosus characteristics. Except the statistically significant difference (p=0,05) in number of primary fibers among piglets from small litter (15053) and large litter (11347), litter size did not influence birth weight, or other observed morphological and histological characteristics of the muscle significantly. Similarly, results of this research show that litter size as a factor did not affect final weight, morphological characteristics or fiber type distribution within the muscle in slaughter pigs.
AB  - Savremena proizvodnja mesa usmerena je na profitabilnost sa jedne strane uz istovremeno odgovaranje zahtevima potrošača u pogledu kvaliteta mesa sa druge. Isrcpna naučna istraživanja obavljaju se u cilju pronalaženja balansa između količine i kvaliteta mesa. Najveći broj autora slaže se da prasad manje porođajne mase ima manji broj mišićnih vlakana u skeletnim mišićima, sporije raste, kompenzujući mišićni porast povećanjem prečnika mišićnih vlakana i deponovanjem veće količine masti u trupu. Poslednjih godina selekcija u svinjarstvu bila je usmeravana u pravcu povećanja broja prasadi u leglu. Obzirom da je utvrđena inverzna korelacija između veličine legla i mase prasadi na rođenju, cilj ovog rada bio je da se prouče mogući uticaji veličine legla kao faktora na porast svinja i karakteristike m. semitendinosus-a. Osim utvrđene statistički značajne razlike (p=0,05) u broju primarnih vlakana kod prasadi iz malog legla (15053) u odnosu na prasad iz velikog legla (11347), analiza nije pokazala uticaj veličine legla na masu prasadi pri rođenju i druge posmatrane morfološke i histološke osobine mišića. Slično tome, ni kod tovljenika nije utvrđen uticaj veličine legla kao faktora na klaničnu masu, morfološke karakteristike ispitivanog mišića ili na zastupljenost pojedinih tipova mišićnih vlakana u mišiću.

A. facialis in ground squirrel (Citellus citellus)

AB  - A ground squirrel is a hibernator, which hibernation lasts, depending on the age and sex, since the end of the summer until the spring. During this period in the body of ground squirrel, as well as in other hibernators, starts lowering of all vital functions, what has been proven by numerous physiological, biochemical and histological examinations of some organ systems of this animal. The objective of our work was to investigate a part of cardiovascular system of ground squirrel so in that way to contribute to a better knowledge of this animal body structure and accordingly to comparative anatomy in general. The investigation included 6 ground squirrels, of both gender, body weight 200-300 grams. For obtaining head and neck arterial vascularization, after exsanguination of the animal, contrast mass of gelatin coloured with tempera was injected into thoracic aorta (Aorta thoracica). After injecting, the blood vessels were prepared and photographed. For obtaining the corrosive preparations of head and neck arterial blood vessels, after exsanguination of the animal, Biocryl (a mixture of liquid biocryl - methil - methacrylate monomer and biocryl in powder - methil - methacrylate polymer) was injected into thoracic aorta (Aorta thoracica). After injecting the preparations were placed into 5% NaOH, for 96 hours or into 10% NaOH for 48 hours. After that they were rinsed in hot water and photographed. A. facialis in ground squirrel is an extension of A. maxillaris. The branches of A. facialis are: A. labialis inferior, A. bursae buccalis dorsalis, A. labialis superior, A. dorsalis nasi and A. angularis oculi. The obtained results regarding A. facialis in ground squirrel (Citellus citellus) were compared to the same ones in rats. In rats, A. facialis is the biggest branch separating from A. carotis externa. The branches of A. facialis in rats are: Ramus glandularis, A. submentalis, A. masseterica ventralis, A. labialis inferior, A. angularis oris, A. labialis superior, Rami musculares, A. lateralis nasi and A. angularis oculi. Based on the above mentioned results, it can be concluded that both in ground squirrel and rat A. facialis branches into A. labialis inferior, A. labialis superior and A. angularis oculi. In ground squirrel the branches of A. facialis are also A. bursae buccalis dorsalis and A. dorsalis nasi, and in rat those are Ramus glandularis, A. submentalis, A. masseterica ventralis, A. angularis oris, Rami musculares and A. lateralis nasi.
AB  - Tekunica je prezimar, čija hibernacija traje, u zavisnosti od uzrasta i pola, od kraja leta do proleća. U organizmu ove životinje, kao i kod ostalih prezimara, nastupa veliko snižavanje intenziteta svih životnih funkcija, što je dokazano mnogobrojnim fiziološkim, biohemijskim i histološkim ispitivanjima pojedinih organskih sistema kod tekunice. Cilj rada je bio da obradimo deo kardiovaskularnog sistema kod tekunice i na taj način doprinesemo boljem poznavanju građe tela ove životinje i damo doprinos komparativnoj anatomiji. Za ispitivanje je upotrebljeno 6 tekunica, oba pola, telesne mase 200-300 grama. Za dobijanje arterijske vaskularizacije glave i vrata, posle iskrvarenja životinja u grudnu aortu (Aorta thoracica) ubrizgana je kontrastna masa želatin obojen slikarskom temperom. Posle injiciranja, krvni sudovi su preparisani i fotografisani. Za dobijanje korozivnih preparata arterijskih krvnih sudova glave i vrata, po iskrvarenju životinja, u grudnu aortu (Aorta thoracica) ubrizgan je Biocryl (mešavina tečnog biokrila - metil - metakrilat monomer i biokrila u prašku - metil - metakrilat polimer). Posle injiciranja, preparati su stavljani u 5% NaOH, 96 sati ili u 10% NaOH 48 sati. Posle toga preparati su ispirani vrelom vodom i fotografisani. A. facialis kod tekunice predstavlja nastavak od A. maxillaris. Grane od A. facialis su : A. labialis inferior, A. bursae buccalis dorsalis, A. labialis superior, A. dorsalis nasi i A. angularis oculi. Dobijene rezultate koji se odnose na A. facialis kod tekunice (Citellus citellus) upoređivali smo sa istim kod pacova. Kod pacova A. facialis je najveća grana koja se odvaja od A. carotis externa-e. Grane od A. facialis kod pacova su : Ramus glandularis, A. submentalis, A. masseterica ventralis, A. labialis inferior, A. angularis oris, A. labialis superior, Rami musculares, A. lateralis nasi i A. angularis oculi. Na osnovu navedenih rezultata može se zaključiti da se kod tekunice i pacova od A. facialis odvajaju A. labialis inferior, A. labialis superior i A. angularis oculi. Kod tekunice grane od A. facialis su i A. bursae buccalis dorsalis i A. dorsalis nasi, a kod pacova i Ramus glandularis, A. submentalis, A. masseterica ventralis, A. angularis oris, Rami musculares i A. lateralis nasi.

abstract = "A ground squirrel is a hibernator, which hibernation lasts, depending on the age and sex, since the end of the summer until the spring. During this period in the body of ground squirrel, as well as in other hibernators, starts lowering of all vital functions, what has been proven by numerous physiological, biochemical and histological examinations of some organ systems of this animal. The objective of our work was to investigate a part of cardiovascular system of ground squirrel so in that way to contribute to a better knowledge of this animal body structure and accordingly to comparative anatomy in general. The investigation included 6 ground squirrels, of both gender, body weight 200-300 grams. For obtaining head and neck arterial vascularization, after exsanguination of the animal, contrast mass of gelatin coloured with tempera was injected into thoracic aorta (Aorta thoracica). After injecting, the blood vessels were prepared and photographed. For obtaining the corrosive preparations of head and neck arterial blood vessels, after exsanguination of the animal, Biocryl (a mixture of liquid biocryl - methil - methacrylate monomer and biocryl in powder - methil - methacrylate polymer) was injected into thoracic aorta (Aorta thoracica). After injecting the preparations were placed into 5% NaOH, for 96 hours or into 10% NaOH for 48 hours. After that they were rinsed in hot water and photographed. A. facialis in ground squirrel is an extension of A. maxillaris. The branches of A. facialis are: A. labialis inferior, A. bursae buccalis dorsalis, A. labialis superior, A. dorsalis nasi and A. angularis oculi. The obtained results regarding A. facialis in ground squirrel (Citellus citellus) were compared to the same ones in rats. In rats, A. facialis is the biggest branch separating from A. carotis externa. The branches of A. facialis in rats are: Ramus glandularis, A. submentalis, A. masseterica ventralis, A. labialis inferior, A. angularis oris, A. labialis superior, Rami musculares, A. lateralis nasi and A. angularis oculi. Based on the above mentioned results, it can be concluded that both in ground squirrel and rat A. facialis branches into A. labialis inferior, A. labialis superior and A. angularis oculi. AB  - The aim of this paper was to investigate the differences in morphometric characteristics and histological structure of m. semitendinosus, between gilts and barrows of German Landrace breed at the end of the fattening period. Morphometric characteristics (weight, length, diameter and cross sectional area) of m. semitendinosus were not significantly different, while gender as a factor influenced the histological properties of this muscle. A very high statistical difference (p lt 0.01) in the total number of muscle fibers in m. semitendinosus was determined, with gilts having a higher total fiber number. The cross sectional area of fast twitch oxidative (FTO) fibers was significantly higher (p lt 0.05) in barrows. Gender did not affect the distribution of different fiber types: in both gender, the most present fiber types (48-52 %) were fast twitch glycolitic (FTG), FTO fibers represented 27-30 % of the total fiber number, while slow twitch oxidative fibers (STO) were the least represented (≈ 20 %).
AB  - Cilj ovog rada je bio da se ispita postojanje razlika u morfometrijskim osobinama i strukturi m.semitendinosus, između ženki i kastriranih mužjaka svinja Nemačkog landrasa, na kraju tova. Morfometrijske osobine (masa, dužina, obim i površina poprečnog preseka) m. semitendinosus, nisu bile statistički značajno različite između polova. Histološka analiza strukture mišića je pokazala da postoje neke razlike između polova. Ukupan broj mišićnih vlakana u m. semitendinosus bio je veoma značajno (p lt 0.01) veći kod ženki nego kod kastriranih mužjaka. Površina poprečnog preseka FTO vlakana bila statistički značajno veća (p lt 0.05) kod kastriranih mužjaka nego kod ženki. Procentualni udeo (zastupljenoost) tipova mišićnih vlakana u m.semitendinosus, se nije značajno razlikovao između polova. Kod oba pola najveći udeo (oko polovinu od svih tipova vlakana) su imala bela brzo kontrahujuća glikolitička (FTG) vlakana (48-52 %). Od crvenih, oksidativnih vlakana najmanji udeo (20.23-20.68 %) su imala sporo kontrahujuća (STO) vlakna dok su brzo kontrahujuća (FTO) vlakna bila zastupljena u većem procentu (27-30 %).
