Levels of macro and trace elements in vegetable crops as influenced by metallurgical slag addition to marginal soil

AB  - Through the vegetative experiments performed in semi-controlled conditions the influence of calcium containing metallurgical slag, a by-product from the Steel factory, as well as the effects of selected commercial lime materials and fertilizers, on macro (N, P, K, Ca, Mg) and trace elements (Fe, Zn, Cu, Cd) content in common spinach, cabbage and radicchio grown on Stagnosol (a soil with high acidity), was studied. P was determined by spectrophotometer, K-by flame emission photometry and N-using elemental CNS analyzer Vario EL III. In the determination of Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, Cu and Cd, atomic absorption spectrometry was used. The results of the paper indicate that all lime materials studied, along with the studied metallurgical slag, showed positive effects on the content of main and beneficial biogenic macroelements in aboveground biomass of the tested vegetables. There is a noticeably tendency of a little increase in the content of P in all tested plants and Ca in spinach and cabbage in the treatment with mineral fertilizer, manure and metallurgical slag in relation to the control. Regarding the concentration of trace metals in tested vegetables, there was not found higher accumulation of Fe in tested plants in the treatments where metallurgical slag was applied in spite of its significant content in this liming material. As for Cd, its concentrations were within the safety limits and allowed concentrations in all the treatments, which is a highly desirable outcome.

AB  - Water table forecasting plays an important role in the management of groundwater resources in agricultural regions where there are drainage systems in river valleys. The results presented in this paper pertain to an area along the left bank of the Danube River, in the Province of Vojvodina, which is the northern part of Serbia. Two soft computing techniques were used in this research: an adaptive neurofuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and an artificial neural network (ANN) model for one-month water table forecasts at several wells located at different distances from the river. The results suggest that both these techniques represent useful tools for modeling hydrological processes in agriculture, with similar computing and memory capabilities, such that they constitute an exceptionally good numerical framework for generating high-quality models.

Available nitrogen in the surface mineral layer of Serbian forest soils

AB  - Based on a greenhouse experiment, we evaluated nitrogen availability in the surface mineral layer of soil under various deciduous forest stands by analysing the following soil characteristics: total organic C, total N, initial content of easily available N inorganic forms, mineralized N content obtained by aerobic and anaerobic incubations and A-value. The experiment was performed on a test plant and through the application of urea enriched with 5.4% 15N. The studied forest soils are characterized by high mineralization intensity and high N availability indices. Aerobic incubation appears to be the most appropriate method for evaluating the available N content. The amounts of mineralized and nitrified N, obtained by aerobic incubation, with subtraction of the initial content of available mineral N forms are in correlation (P ≤ 0.05) with total organic C content (r = 0.916) and total soil N (r = 0.903) while the correlation with the C/N ratio is poor (r = 0.645).

AB  - This paper outlines effects of the usage of metallurgical slag from a steel factory in Smederevo, Republic of Serbia (owned by U.S. Steel), through vegetative experiments, performed in semi-controlled conditions on two types of acid soils (lessivated cambisol and pseudogley). Chemical properties of soils as well as chemical composition and yield of the planted barley were studied. The aim of experiments was to compare the effect of metallurgical slag with other lime materials (ground limestone and hydrated lime) in combination without and with standard fertilizers (organics and minerals). The research was conducted in order to define elementary parameters for wide-spread usage of this secondary raw material in amelioration and fertilization of acid soils, widely spread in Republic of Serbia. All the lime materials - neutralizers of soil acidity, along with metallurgical slag, showed positive effects both on increase of barley yield and its elemental composition, and also chemical properties of experimental acid soils.

Effect of irrigation on pseudogley structural composition in the protected cultivation

AB  - Pseudogley soils are very important in agricultural production thanks to their significant percent cover, potential fertility, the fact that they occur in predominantly flat soil complexes, suitable for mechanized tillage. Moreover, it could be the substrates for protected cultivation. Intensive multiannual production in plastic greenhouses causes the changes which lower the soil productivity as well as changes soil structure. The aim of this paper is to investigate the degree to which pseudogley structure is changed by vegetable production in plastic-covered greenhouses, in the conditions of intensive irrigation and fertilization. The six-year-long implementation of drip irrigation system caused some changes in the soil structural composition in the sense of a mild increase in the content of larger-sized aggregates (>5mm), but also their greater liability to decomposition, as well as a mild decrease in the percentage of water-stable aggregates larger than 1mm. The soil water logging in the plastic greenhouse led to elevated processes of structure deterioration, the formation of crumby aggregates, as well as to the decrease in water stability of structural aggregates.
AB  - Pseudoglejna zemljišta imaju veliki značaj za poljoprivrednu proizvodnju zbog njihove značajne zastupljenosti, potencijalne plodnosti, činjenice da se javljaju na pretežno ravnim kompleksima zemljišta pogodnim za primenu mehanizovane obrade, kao i mogućnosti da se koriste kao podloga za proizvodnju u zaštićenim prostorima. Tokom intenzivne višegodišnje plasteničke proizvodnje dolazi do promena koje smanjuju produktivnu vrednost i dovode do promene strukturnog sastava zemljišta. Cilj ovog rada bio je da prouči u kojoj meri plastenička povrtarska proizvodnja, u uslovima intenzivnog navodnjavanja i đubrenja utiče na promenu strukture pseudogleja. Šestogodišnja primena navodnjavanja sistemom kap po kap dovela je do izvesnih promena u strakturnom sastavu zemljišta smislu blagog povećanja sadržaja agregata većih dimenzija (većih od 5mm.), ali i njihove veće sklonosti prema rasplinjavanju, kao i blagog smanjenja sadržaja vodootpornih agregata većih od 1mm. Prevlaživanje zemljišta u plasteniku dovelo je do izraženih procesa kvarenja strukture, stvaranja grudvastih agregata, kao i smanjenje vodootprnosti strukturnih agregata.

AB  - The Surčin plane is very important both for agriculture and for water supply Agricultural production is constrained by water shortage, water excess, or soil salinity. For better planning of the maintenance and planning further developments of irrigation and drainage systems, problems such as drought or water excess occurrence must be analyzed, to assess the intensity of drought and its impact on field crop yields. The objective of this endeavor is to determine the intensity and frequency of occurrence of drought and water excess on the Surcin low land, by making use of the Theory of runs Standardized precipitation index (SPI), and Recognition of Drought Indices (RDI). The application of the method of runs has shown that droughts periods were very short (a season or two), with a calculated cumulative deficit of 130 mm of water for the period of vegetation, and 82 mm and 63 mm for the cold period of the year; in consequence, the intensity of drought could not be determined. The SPI method indicated a clearly cyclic nature of precipitation in the region. Drought occurred only during 7 vegetation seasons out of the 55 analyzed, and very severe drought only 5 times randomly distributed. In the cold period of the year drought came about 8 times, of which 3 times severe ones. The results showed that there were more wet seasons than droughts (4 times in the vegetation seasons and 11 times in the cold period of year), yet few of them were extremely wet. Results by RDI are very similar to those ones obtained by SPI. Analysis showed that more threat could come from water excess than from drought. In conclusion, the maintenance of drainage canals should get priority over that of the ones for irrigation. Further development of field crop irrigation must be economically justified.
AB  - Surčinsko donje polje ima veliki značaj sa aspekta poljoprivrede i vodosnabdevanja. Na njemu se javljaju mnogi problemi vezani za vode i zemljište. U cilju boljeg planiranja razvoja melioracija kao i redovnog održavanja potrebno je sa više aspekata analizirati učestalost sušnog perioda, intenzitet suše, uticaj suše na smanjenje prinosa. Cilj ovoga rada je da se primenom metoda nizova, standardizovanog indeksa padavina (SPI) i indeksa suše (RDI) utvrdi intenzitet i učestalost suše na Surčinskom donjem polju. Primenom teorije nizova utvrđeno je da je trajanje suše veoma kratkotrajno (1 do 2 sezone) a kumulativni deficit iznosi 130 mm za vegetacioni period, i 82 i 63 mm za vanvegetacioni period. Na osnovu dobijenih rezultata nije bilo osnove za određivanje intenziteta suše. Standardizovani indeks padavina jasnije pokazuje cikličnost kišnog odnosno sušnog perioda. Suša se javlja samo u toku 7 vegetacionih sezona od 55 analiziranih a jaka suša samo 5 puta i to veoma neregularno. U van-vegetacionom periodu suša se javila 8 puta, a jaka suša 3 puta. Dobijeni rezultati ukazuju da se javljaju i veoma prevlažene godine. U vegetacionom periodu osmotrene su 4 vrlo vlažne sezone, a u vanvegetacionom čak 11 vlažnih sezona od kojih 3 veoma vlažne. Ako se analiziraju sve osmotrene godine, može se primetiti da ima više vlažnih od sušnih godina i u vegetacionom i u vanvegetacionom periodu. Rezultati dobijeni primenom RD indeksa jasno ukazuju da postoji značajna veza između padavina i potencijalne evapotranspiracije jer se trendovi podudaraju sa standardizovanim indeksom padavina. Veći broj kišnih perioda ukazuje da održavanje drenažnih kanala ima prioritetan značaj u melioracijama, dok izgradnja sistema za navodnjavanje za ratarske useve mora da bude opravdana ekonomskom analizom.

AB  - In the area of experimental drainage field Varna, held by the Institute of soil science, Belgrade, in the scope of drainage experiment obtained on pseudogley soil using three variants of drainage spacing, in the period of 2002-2004, analysis of parameters of drains leakage were obtained. During the experiment, collection of basic climate parameters from observed area were obtained, as well as, measurement of drain leakage and time length of drainage leakage. Purpose of analysis of drainage parameters is to define optimal drainage criteria which will result with most efficient and economically most appropriate variant of construction of drainage systems.
AB  - Na području oglednog polja Varna-Instituta za zemljište iz Beograda, u okviru trovarijantnog drenažnog ogleda izvedenog na zemljištu tipa pseudoglej, u periodu 2002-2004 analizirani su parametri drenažnog isticanja. Praćenje je obuhvatilo prikupljanje osnovnih klimatskih elemenata posmatranog područja, kao i merenje isticanja vode iz drenažnih cevi i registrovanje dužine trajanja isticanja. Proučavanje drenažnih parametara ima za cilj definisanje optimalnih drenažnih kriterijuma koji će omogućiti najefikasniju i ekonomski najprihvatljiviju varijantu izgradnje drenažnog sistema čijim postavljanjem je moguće regulisanje nepovoljnog vodno-vazdušnog režima pseudoglejnog zemljišta.

AB  - Na području oglednog drenažnog polja Varna kod Šapca, Instituta za zemljište, određen je klimatski vodni bilans, za četrdesetogodišnji period osmatranja klimatskih parametara. Definisane su mesečne vrednosti suficita i deficita vode. Analiza osnovnih klimatskih elemenata: temperature vazduha, padavina, relativne vlažnosti vazduha, osunčavanja i brzine vetra izvršena je na osnovu raspoloživih podataka sa meteoroloških stanica Šabac, Loznica i Valjevo, za period osmatranja 1964-2002 godina. Potencijalna evapotranspiracija određena je metodom H.F. Blaney i W.D. Criddle. Proračun klimatskog vodnog bilansa za pojedine mesece izvršen je na osnovu razlike vrednosti srednjih mesečnih padavina i srednje mesečne vrednosti potencijalne evapotranspiracije. Obrađeni podaci pokazuju da je suficit vode prisutan od oktobra do prve dekade marta dok je u ostalom delu godine primetan klimatski deficit vode. .

AB  - In the area of experimental drainage field Varna near Šabac, owned by Institute of soil science, in the period of 1991-2003 on plots with and without pipe drainage the yields of wheat and maize were registered. The yields of both cultivated crops were higher on the plots with pipe drainage, which confirm the efficiency of horizontal pipe drainage application on pseudogley type of soil.
AB  - Na zemljištu tipa pseudoglej oglednog drenažnog polja Instituta za zemljište Varna kod Šapca, u periodu od 1991. do 2003. godine vršeno je praćenje ostvarenih visina prinosa pšenice i kukuruza. Registrovane su prosečne vrednosti gajenih kultura na kontrolnoj varijanti, u okviru koje nije izvedena cevna drenaža i na parcelama na kojima je cevna drenaža izvedena sa rastojanjem drenova od 25 metara. Pšenica i kukuruz su tokom perioda osmatranja gajeni u plodosmeni. Sve parcele, kako drenirane tako i nedrenirane nalaze se u okviru oglednog polja. Na njima su primenjivane standardno jednake agrotehničke mere. Variranje veličina ostvarenih prinosa, tokom perioda osmatranja zavisilo je od trenutnih sociooekonomskih uslova i raspoloživih sredstava za izvođenje svih potrebnih agrotehničkih mera. Utvrđeni prinosi tokom osmatranja, pokazuju da je na parcelama na kojima je izvedena cevna drenaža zabeleženo povećanje prinosa pšenice od 10-59%, zavisno od semenskog materijala, primenjenih agrotehničkih mera i rodnosti godine, u odnosu na nedreniranu parcelu. Zabeleženo povećanje prinosa kukuruza na dreniranoj parceli iznosilo je 9-41%, a bilo je uslovljeno kao i kod gajenja pšenice od faktora sredine i primenjene agrotehnike. Zaključci koji su proistekli iz obrade prikupljenih podataka sprovedenih istraživanja, ukazuju da se izvođenjem cevne drenaže na zemljištu tipa pseudoglej, mogu obezbediti optimalni uslovi za prevazilaženje svih ograničenja pri obradi i intenzivnom korišćenju ispitivanog tipa zemljišta u cilju ekonomske isplativosti izvedenih mera. .

Variranje veličina ostvarenih prinosa, tokom perioda osmatranja zavisilo je od trenutnih sociooekonomskih uslova i raspoloživih sredstava za izvođenje svih potrebnih agrotehničkih mera. Utvrđeni prinosi tokom osmatranja, pokazuju da je na parcelama na kojima je izvedena cevna drenaža zabeleženo povećanje prinosa pšenice od 10-59%, zavisno od semenskog materijala, primenjenih agrotehničkih mera i rodnosti godine, u odnosu na nedreniranu parcelu. Zabeleženo povećanje prinosa kukuruza na dreniranoj parceli iznosilo je 9-41%, a bilo je uslovljeno kao i kod gajenja pšenice od faktora sredine i primenjene agrotehnike. Zaključci koji su proistekli iz obrade prikupljenih podataka sprovedenih istraživanja, ukazuju da se izvođenjem cevne drenaže na zemljištu tipa pseudoglej, mogu obezbediti optimalni uslovi za prevazilaženje svih ograničenja pri obradi i intenzivnom korišćenju ispitivanog tipa zemljišta u cilju ekonomske isplativosti izvedenih mera. .",

Drainage system maintenance problems in the melioration region of VDP 'Južni Banat'

AB  - The aim of this paper is a case study of a melioration region, which will show the state of the channel network, as well as the scope of the implemented maintenance measures, which resulted in the reduced functionality of the drainage system. Melioration channels are in most cases in the function of drainage, and a minor number has a double function (drainage and irrigation). The dense network of channels, erected throughout the catchment area, is capable of receiving all the design surplus water. However, during the past decade, the channel network was not maintained to the required level, which caused the reduced functionality of the drainage system. The channels are invaded by annual and perennial plants, channel cross-sections are silted with mud, there are landslides of the slopes parts of water cross-sections are blocked, etc. These are the consequences of the inadequate maintenance of the drainage system and the accompanying structures.
AB  - Sistemi za odvodnjavanje izgrađeni su na znatnim površinama hidromorfnih zemljišta u Srbiji. Na mnogima od njih nalazi se gusta mreža kanala koji su sposobni da prihvate projektovane viškove voda. Međutim, nedovoljno održavanje kanala utiče na smanjenu funkcionalnost sistema za odvodnjavanje. S obzirom da je jedan od osnovnih pravaca u razvoju odvodnjavanja u predstojećem periodu rekonstrukcija i revitalizacija postojećih sistema potrebno je utvrditi stanje u kome se oni nalaze, kao i razloge njihove smanjene eksploatacione sposobnosti. Meliorativno područje "Južni Banat" je jedno od područja na kome je stanje kanalske mreže nezadovoljavajuće. Izgrađenost kanalske mreže pokazuje da je površina većeg dela sliva ispresecana gustom mrežom kanala koji su sposobni da prihvate sve projektovane viškove voda. Međutim, kanalska mreža se u toku poslednjih decenija ne održava u meri u kojoj je to potrebno. Kanalska mreža je zarasla u jednogodišnje i višegodišnje rastinje, a kanalski profili su delimično zamuljeni. Neki od glavnih kanala na nizvodnoj deonici imaju pojavu kliženja kosina i zatvaranje jednog dela proticajnog profila. Zbog toga obim radova na održavanju meliorativnih sistema u narednom periodu mora biti uvećan, da bi se nadoknadili propusti i kanalska mreža dovela u stanje zadovoljavajuće funkcionalnosti.

Some properties of Hooghoudt's method for drain spacing determination in eugley soil

AB  - The aim of this work is to present some pecularity of Hooghoudt's method applied in drain spacing determination in steady state water flow in eugley soil. The analysis was based on data obtained by measuring water discharge from drains and water table depth. Measurements was carried out on drainage field with drain spacing of 10 m. Based on the measurements performed in the drainage system with the drainpipe spacing 10 m the assessment of the distance between the drainpipes was performed by the application of the Hooghoudts relation. We used a pair of measurements (h, q) and on this basis the value of the spacing between the drainpipes was calculated and compared to the true value. The method has very good results for the soil type eugley. On the smaller spacings between the drainpipes, Hooghoudt's method generates the estimates very close to the experimental data with a low mean error of estimate. The analysis indicates that the error created in the estimate is random, which means that it is not the consequence of the systematic omission in the model or measurement.
AB  - Cilj ovog rada je da prikaže neke osobenosti primene metode Kirkhama-a za određivanje rastojanja između drenova u stacionarnom režimu filtracije na zemljištu tipa euglej. Analiza je zasnovana na merenjima drenažnog isticanja i dubine podzemne vode na drenažnom sistemu sa međudrenskim rastojanjem 10 m. Na osnovu merenja koja su izvršena na drenažnom sistemu sa rastojanjem drenova od 10 m primenom relacije hooghoudta izvršena je praćena međudrenažnog rastojanja. Korišćeno je merenje (h, q) i na osnovu koga je proračunata vrednost međudrenažnog rastojanja i poređena sa pravom vrednošću. Na zemljištu tipa euglej metoda pokazuje veoma dobre rezultate. Na manjim međudrenskim rastojanjima metoda Hooghoudt-a generiše procene veoma bliske eksperimentalnim podacima sa malom srednjom greškom procene. Analiza ukazuje na to da je greška koja nastaje u praćeni slučajne prirode, što znači da nije posledica sistematskog previda u modelu ili merenju.
