AB - Maize silage is source of palatable and high-energy forage for ruminants. Therefore, production of high quality forage maize represents an essential strategy for stable production of milk and meat on livestock farms. This study examined the effect of harvest date (early dent, at half milk line, at three quarters milk line and black layer) on the quantitative and qualitative parameters of whole maize plant under contrasting climatic conditions in the Srem-Serbia. A 2 × 4 factorial (two years and the four cutting times) randomized blocks design was used, with three replications. The plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves per plant, forage yield, dry matter yield and dry matter content were higher in 2014 probably due to favorable weather conditions. With the delay of the harvest the forage yield, crude protein content, acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) decreased, and dry matter yield, dry matter content and ear percentage increased. Sufficiently high dry matter content and ear percentage were achieved at the third harvest. However, the delay of harvested time reduces the quality parameters of the biomass, but this loss in the entire plant is moderated by grain filling.

AB - This research aimed to determine the effects of different cover crops and application of bio-fertilizer on dynamic of nitrogen in the soil and sweet maize yield. Also, we evaluated the effect of fall-winter species (common vetch, field pea, winter oats, fodder kale) and a mixture of vetch and field pea with oats used as cover crops, as such as dead organic mulch and traditional variant, without coverage on biomass, chlorophyll and protein content in leaves and grain of main crop. Biomass production and N uptake by cover crops ranged from 4.25 to 90.20 kg ha(-1) and from 0.34 to 133.80 kg ha(-1) N, respectively, depending on cover crop type. At harvest soil nitrate content in treatments with cover crops was 50-90% lower than in the control, reducing spring N leaching risk. Residual mineral N significantly increased with application of microbiological fertilizer. The chlorophyll content of the main crop was significantly lower in treatments without cover crops. Consequently, sweet maize yield was the highest in fodder kale and field pea (7263.83 and 7177.27 kg ha(-1)) treatments, but the smallest in winter oat and common vetch (6802.47 and 6184.14 kg ha(-1)). In terms of all investigated traits, particularly grain yield, cover crops and microbiological fertilizer expressed more efficiency in the dry year. It could be concluded that N content should be controlled effectively by sowing main crops after planting of cover crops in biological farming systems in a semiarid region.

AB - The aim of this study was to determine the effects of the inoculation of maize seeds with mixtures of bacteria (Azotobacter chroococum, Azotobacter vinelandi, Bacillus megaterium, Bacillus licheniformis) during different phenophases (6-7 leaves, silking and wax ripeness stage) and on the nitrogen dynamics, total number of microorganisms, number of azotobacter and aminoheterotrophs in Chernozem and grain yield of maize hybrid ZP 684 during 2006, 2007 and 2008. Nitrogen amount in soil was significantly higher in 2006, due to favourable meteorological conditions for microbial activity (higher total number of microorganisms and number of azotobacter), than in 2007 and 2008. The minimum amount of nitrogen was in the stage of wax ripeness although the total number of microorganisms, azotobacter and aminoheterotrophs were the largest. Seed inoculation of maize significantly increases the values of all studied parameters.

AB - The aim of paper was to asses the use of regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) for production of two tomato cultivars (Cedrico and Abellus) in polytunnels in Serbia. RDI plants received 60% of the water that was applied to FI plants and significant saving of water for irrigation and increased in irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE) were achieved. Yield data for Cedrico cultivar showed no differences between RDI and FI, while due to the bigger sensitivity to drought, yield of Abellus was reduced under RDI. In general, fruit quality (soluble solids, titrable acidity) was sustained or improved in both cultivars under RDI. Economic analyses showed that due to the current low prices of water and electricity in Serbia, the profit increase of Cedrico, similarly to the previously trialed cultivar Amati, was not high under RDI comparing to FI. Reduction of yield and consequent profit for Abellus, indicated that for future commercial growing of tomato under RDI should be used drought resistant cultivars.

AB - Diffusion techniques on Mueller - Hinton agar as well as dilution technique in Mueller - Hinton broth were applied to test sensitivity of certain bacteria to Carlina acaulis L. root essential oil. Saburaud base was used for testing activity of essential oil against fungi. The results of testing antimicrobial activity using diffusion technique are shown in diameters of zones of inhibition compared to cephalosporin and amino-glucoside antibiotics. The results obtained by dilution technique are shown through minimum bacteria concentration (MBC). It should be concluded that the essential oil had distinctive concentration-dependent antimicrobial activity.
