AB - Postharvest losses caused by phytopathogenic fungi can be severe, and low and high temperatures can significantly inhibit pathogen development from harvest to marketing. Colletotrichum spp. are important post-harvest pathogens of apple, causing losses from 30-80%. The losses are mostly managed by fungicide applications, as well as by keeping of fruits in adequate storage. Therefore, effect of different storage conditions (cold storage, ultra-low oxygen cold storage, storage at 35 degrees C) of apple fruits on Colletotrichum spp. virulence was studied in vivo, and compared with an effect of low and high temperatures on mycelial growth of the pathogens in vitro. It was found that both, high and low temperatures significantly affect pathogen development, in vitro and in vivo, and that high temperatures (35 degrees C) can completely inactivate virulence of C. acutatum, while low temperatures ( lt = 2 degrees C) can inactivate virulence of C. gloeosporioides. However, short-term storage of inoculted apple fruits at 5 degrees C can cause more pronounced virulence of both Colletotrichum species once they reach room temperature. According to the obtained results, combination of postharvest heat treatment with a long-term cold storage is proposed for complete elimination of Colletotrichum spp. on apple fruits.

AB - A collection of 41 Erwinia amylovora strains isolated from 8 plant species at 13 locations in Serbia and one location in Montenegro was tested and their relationship was determined based on carbohydrate metabolism and fatty acid composition. Metabolism of carbon compounds was tested using the Biolog GN MicroPlate system. After 24 h of incubation, the resulting metabolic fingerprints were recorded and compared with the Biolog GN database. Fatty acid composition was analyzed by Microbial Identification System and compared with the data from the MIDI database. Our results showed that all strains tested were identified as E. amylovora, with similarity index (SI) between 0.62 and 0.99, using BIOLOG. Based on fatty acid composition, 39 strains were identified as E. amylovora, with SI between 0.61 and 0.92. More than 14 fatty acids were detected, eight of which were present in all strains with more than 1% of the total named peak area. Based on quantitative and qualitative content of fatty acid composition, the isolates were clustered into three groups: alpha, beta and gamma (Euclidian distance lt = 6). Cluster analysis revealed that groups beta and gamma consists of only strains isolated from north Serbia, whereas all strains isolated from central or south Serbia belong to group alpha.

AB - In this article the actual and economically important diseases, insect pests and integrated pest management (IPM) of fruit and grapes in Serbia were discussed. Different pest management measures were suggested, as well. In the pome fruits group the resistance of Ventura inaequalis to fungicides and fire blight were pointed as an actual problem. In stone fruits production it was stressed that the Plum pox virus (PPV) is still the biggest problem in Serbia. In the field of insect pests it was pointed out that apple codling moth resistance is emerging. Phytophthora root rot, which was the biggest problem in small fruit production in the last decade, was successfully controlled by production and planting healthy raspberry plants. In grapevine production the biggest problem emerged with Bois Noir phytoplasmas appearance. By taking preventive control measure the disease is under control. But, the ESCA complex diseases are getting more important. These diseases in Serbian grapes production need more attention.

AB - Bacterioses are considered one of the most important diseases of vegetables field crops and ornamental plants. Bacteria mostly overwinter and spread by seed. During last few decades, the role of seed as the major source of primary inoculum was increased, due to unlimited possibility of transportation. In our country bacterioses cause the most important yield lost of vegetables, especially of pepper, bean, potato and brassicaceae. Use of pathogen-free seed and other propagative material is considered as basic control measure for bacterioses. In order to obtain proper health condition this plant material should be visually field inspected during vegetation and checked in special laboratories according to standardized bacteriological methods.
