Foliar fertilization with phosphorus and potassium in red clover seed production on an acidic soil

AB  - A field trial with four red clover cultivars ('K-39', 'K-17', 'Una' and 'Viola') was conducted on a leached vertisol acid in reaction (pHH2O 4.8) to assess the effect of foliar treatment with phosphorus and potassium on seed yield and seed yield components. A single foliar application of phosphorus and potassium (P52K34) was made at the intensive growth stage during the second growth in the second year of cultivation. Seed yield and seed yield components were analyzed from the second growth in the second year of the experiment. Foliar treatment with phosphorus and potassium had a significant positive effect on seed yield and yield components in some red clover cultivars in some years. The most positive effect was recorded in 'K-17' and 'Viola'. The different effects of foliar-applied mineral fertilizers on the tested cultivars were the result of their phenotypic differences. Foliar treatment gave the best performance in 2011, when the climatic conditions were the most favorable for red clover growth and development. In general, the seed yield of red clover cultivars increased by 105 kg ha-1 under foliar fertilization. The positive effect of the foliar treatment with phosphorus and potassium was attributed to the need for these elements in many plant processes. The results showed that the foliar application of mineral fertilizers in red clover seed production on acid soils can be an acceptable practice under conditions favoring high yields.
AB  - Poljski ogled sa četiri sorte crvene dateline K-39, K-17, Una i Viola je postavljen na zemljištu tipa lesivirana smonica, kisele reakcije (pHH2O 4.8) sa ciljem da se odredi uticaj folijarnih tretmana fosforom i kalijumom na prinos i komponente prinosa semena. Folijarna primena fosfora i kalijuma (P52K34) je izvršena u fazi intenzivnog rasta tokom drugog porasta u drugoj godini proizvodnje. U periodu od cvetanja do žetve su analizirane najvažnije komponente prinosa i prinos semena. Folijarna primena fosfora i kalijuma je imala značajan pozitivan uticaj na prinos semena i komponente prinosa semena pojedinih sorti crvene deteline u pojedinim godinama. Najpozitivniji uticaj je zabležen kod sorti K-37 i viola. Različit uticaj folijarno primenjenih mineralnih hraniva na sorte je rezultat njihovih fenotipskih razlika. Folijarni tretman mineralnim hranivima je dao najbolje rezultate u 2011. godini, kada su klimatski uslovi za uspevanje crvene deteline bili najpovoljniji. Generalno posmatrano, prinos semena sorti crvene deteline je povećan pod uticajem folijarne prihrane za 105 kg ha-1. Pozitivan uticaj folijarnog tretmana fosforom i kalijumom se pripisuje neophodnosti ovih elemenata u mnogim procesima u biljci. Rezultati ukazuju da folijarna primena mineralnih hraniva u semenskoj proizvodnji crvene deteline na kiselim zemljištima može biti prihvatljiva mera u uslovima kada su obezbeđeni i ostali uslovi za postizanje visokih prinosa.

AB  - In order to study and find plant species that possess antimicrobial activity, this work was carried out testing of plant species Lotus corniculatus L. (birdsfoot trefoil). The work was conceived with the aim to determine the mineral composition and antimicrobial activity of ethanol extract birdsfoot trefoil, and in terms of potential use in food production. The minimum inhibitir concentration (MIC) was tested in microdilution method in a function of time of the extract and the growth of microorganisms. From the point of antimicrobial activity, by testing it was found that extract of Lotus corniculatus L. manifest the strongest antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, and the lowest to the bacterium Proteus hauser. Mineral composition of the extract plant species Lotus corniculatus L. was determined by ICP-MS. The study showed that the extract birdsfoot trefoil is rich by mineral composition.
AB  - Rad je koncipiran sa ciljem da se utvrdi mineralni sastav i antimikrobna aktivnost etanolskog ekstrakta žutog zvezdana, a u smislu potencijalne upotrebe u proizvodnji hrane. Minimalna inhibitorna koncentracija (MIC) ispitivana je mikrodilucionom metodom u funkciji ekstrakta i vremena razvoja mikroorganizama. Sa stanovišta antimikrobnog delovanja, ispitivanjem je ustanovljeno da ekstrakt biljke Lotus corniculatus L. ispoljava najjaču antimikrobnu aktivnost u odnosu na bakteriju Escherichia coli, a najmanju u odnosu na bakteriju Proteus hauseri. Mineralni sastav ekstrakta biljne vrste Lotus corniculatus L. određen je primenom metode ICP-MS. Ispitivanje je pokazalo da je ekstrakt žutog zvezdana bogatog mineralnog sastava.

Seed germination and seedling vigour of Italian ryegrass, cocksfoot and timothy following harvest and storage

AB  - During post-harvest maturation, different species vary in the length of dormancy breaking or germination increases. Seed dormancy and slow seedling development often limit establishment of forage grass stands. Seed germination and seedling vigour of Italian ryegrass (Lolium italicum A. Braun, Synonym Lolium multiflorum L.), cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.) and timothy (Phleum pretense L.) were observed after harvest and storage. After harvest in June, seeds were stored under standard storage conditions and sampled every 30 days after harvest (DAH), up to 270 DAH, and then every 60 days up to 990 DAH. At each date, seeds were tested for final germination percentage and for seedling vigour traits. Timothy seeds had a maximum germination (88%) and the best seedlings vigour at 90 DAH, which implies that early autumn (September-October) is the best sowing period for freshly harvested seeds of timothy. Timothy seed germination was poor from 270 DAH (73%). The best germination and vigour of Italian ryegrass and cocksfoot seedlings were between 270 and 330 DAH, which equates to spring sowing time (March-April) in the succeeding year. Cocksfoot and Italian ryegrass seeds maintained satisfactory germination levels up to 630 DAH (81%) and 810 DAH (81%), respectively. The data can serve for the determination of a proper storage duration management between harvest and sowing of the tested species under ambient conditions of south-eastern Europe.

Influence of liming on yield and chemical composition of alfalfa on an acid soil

AB  - An on-farm field experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of lime application on chemical composition, leaf stem ratio, stem height and herbage yield in dryland alfalfa during a three-year period. The soil of the experiment site was silty-loam, pseudogley (Stagnosols). The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with three rates of ground limestone (0, 3 and 6 t ha(-1)). Lime application has a significant beneficial impact on herbage yield, crude protein content, stein height and leaf to stein ratio of alfalfa. Increasing amounts of lime had a significant effect on the concentration of nutrient elements in dried herbage of alfalfa. Lime applications significantly increased soil pH and improved the bioavailability of P, K Ca and Mg in the treated soil. Liming significantly reduced the Fe, Al, Mn, Zn and Cu contents in the soil.

The influence of zeolite addition on quality of fresh lucerne silage

AB  - The influence of natural zeolite addition on chemical composition and quality of silages was investigated. Lucerne was ensiled with and without technologically processed natural zeolite (Min-A-Zel, product of ITNMS Belgrade) in the amounts of 80, 400 and 2000 g per 100 kg of fresh lucerne (with approximately 250 g/kg dry matter). Ensiling was done immediately after harvesting or after 24 hours (two factorial experiment 4 x 2). Second part of the experiment (alter 24 hours) was done to investigate the additional contamination of lucerne with aerial microorganisms. The results of the investigations show that addition of the technologically processed natural zeolite while lucerne ensiling enhances the fermentation intensity and results in the increase in acetic acid production with the lower pH values and more favorable ratio of lactic to total acids. The influence of mentioned doses of zeolite on chemical composition was less pronounced and is mostly relative. The only real changes were the increase of dry matter content and of the mineral content. According to DLG method the control silage was ranked as III quality class, silages with lowest and medium doses of zeolite in II quality class and silage with maximal dose of zeolite in 1 quality class.
AB  - U ogledu je ispitivan uticaj dodavanja prirodnog zeolita na hemijski sastav i kvalitet silaža lucerke. Lucerka je silirana bez i sa dodatkom tehnološki obrađenog prirodnog zeolita (pod nazivom Min-A-Zel, proizvod ITNMS -Beograd) u količini od 80, 400 i 2000 g na 100 kg sveže lucerke (sa oko 250 g/kg suve materije). Siliranje lucerke je obavljeno odmah po košenju i posle 24 sata (dvofaktorijalni eksperiment, 4 x 2). Drugi deo eksperimenta (posle 24 sata) izveden je u cilju dodatne kontaminacije lucerke mikroorganizmima iz vazduha. Rezultati obavljenih istraživanja pokazuju da dodavanje tehnološki obrađenog prirodnog zeolita pri siliranju lucerke doprinosi intenziviranju fermentacije i povećanju produkcije mlečne kiseline, uz postizanje nižih pH vrednosti i povoljnijeg odnosa mlečne prema ukupnim kiselinama. Uticaj navedenih doza zeolita na standardni hemijski sastav je bio manji, i pretežno je relativnog karaktera. Jedine realne promene su povećanje stepena suve materije i povećanje količine mineralnog ostatka. Prema DLG metodi kontrolna silaža je svrstana u III klasu kvaliteta, silaže sa nižom i srednjom dozom zeolita u II klasu, a silaža sa maksimalnom dozom zeolita u I klasu kvaliteta.
