AB - Magnesium aluminate has the spinel structure along with good mechanical, chemical, and thermal properties. Magnesium aluminate has a wide range of applications including refractory ceramics, optically transparent ceramic windows, and armors. Its low dielectric permeability and low loss tangent enable its applications for integrated electronic devices, as well. In this paper, MgO and Al2O3 powders were mixed in a one-to-one molar ratio and calcined at temperatures ranging from 1500 to 1800o C to produce phase pure spinel. Thereafter, pellets were crushed and treated in a planetary ball mill for 60 min to obtain a fine powder. All powders were examined for phase composition, crystal structure, and morphology. The obtained results showed that by increasing the temperature, samples with higher density were synthesized. Milling for 1 h led to formation of larger particles, but finer powders after milling. XRPD and Raman spectroscopy showed disorder in the crystal structure after milling.

AB - This study aimed to evaluate the physical (particle size and ζ-potential) and techno-functional properties (emulsifying and foaming) of goat milk powders enriched with grape pomace seed extract (TME), as promising food ingredients in the formulation of functional food. Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) and Raman spectroscopies, along with advanced chemometric tools were employed as well as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) for analyzing TME powders. All powders exhibited a unimodal particle size distribution and ζ-potential values more negative than −36 mV. ATR-FTIR and Raman spectroscopies combined with principal component analysis (PCA) demonstrated distinct separation among skimmed goat milk (M), thermally treated skimmed goat milk (TM), and TME powders in different spectral regions (amide I, II, III, and fingerprint region). This separation resulted from the applied thermal treatment, the presence of phenolic compounds and their complexes with goat milk proteins, and the formation of Maillard reaction products. SEM analysis confirmed the different morphology and shapes of M, TM and TME powders. The 0.1% solutions of M, TM and TME exhibited good emulsifying properties (emulsion activity index and emulsion stability index) but showed poor foaming properties, except for the M sample. Solution concentrations higher than 0.1% for all samples (0.5% and 1.0%) displayed poor techno-functional properties. In summary, a schematic representation of the arrangement of casein micelles in 0.1% M, TM and TME samples, on oil/water and air/water surfaces was provided. The production of TME powders represents an innovative strategy for waste recovery in the production of functional food ingredients with good emulsifying properties.

AB - Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the surface texture and biofilm adhesion of veneered or CAD/CAM milled zirconia (partially stabilized with yttrium) after professional oral hygiene procedures. The samples (4 × 4 mm, thickness 2 mm; n  =  72) were separated from zirconia blanks (3Y-TZP-LA). One group was veenered with ceramics, and the other group of samples was CAD/CAM milled. Each group had two subgroups: polished and glazed. The samples were subjected to simulated strokes of professional brushing using abrasive paste and ultrasonic scaling. The parameters of surface micromorphology and receptivity to biofilm were calculated before and after simulating the given methods of the professional maintenance of oral hygiene. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to evaluate zirconia surface properties. Microbial (bacterial/fungal) species (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus sanguinis and Candida albicans) were used and cultured on respective sterilized zirconia surfaces. Colony-forming unit (CFU) counts were used to quantify the amount of biofilm formation on zirconia samples surfaces. Results: The SEM analysis showed the greatest change in surface microtopography after the use of ultrasonic scaling on glazed zirconia samples. Less formation of colonies on the surfaces of CAD/CAM milled zirconia restorations was observed. Conclusion: Routine methods of oral hygiene professional maintenance can damage the surfaces of glazed zirconia restorations.

AB - This study aimed to develop active, biodegradable materials for food packaging by incorporating sage extract (SE) within a zein-gelatin blend by electrospinning and solvent casting. The fabrication techniques, SE incorporation, and its content (5, 10% w/w) determined the materials’ properties. Electrospinning produced 0.36–0.53 mm thick, non-transparent fibrous mats (mean fiber diameter 1.12–1.36 µm). Solvent casting generated 0.34–0.41 mm thick, transparent continuous films. The analysis indicated the constituents’ compatibility, homogenous dispersion, and efficient SE incorporation without strong chemical interactions and phase separation. The solvent-cast films presented more ordered structures, higher mechanical resistance, elongation, and water vapor barrier performance than the electrospun mats. The SE-incorporating formulations showed phenolics’ delivery ability to food simulants influenced by structure, SE content, and media polarity. The electrospun mats expressed higher DPPH• radicals’ inhibition, while the solvent-cast films showed stronger Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli growth inhibition, increased by SE incorporation. All formulations showed rapid complete bio-disintegration in compost (18–25 days). © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

AB - This study investigates the effects of ultrasound, in combination with chemical pretreatments, on the quality attributes (total phenolic and carotenoid content, antioxidant activity (2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay (DPPH)), ferric-reducing ability (FRAP), CIE L* a* b* color, non-enzymatic browning, rehydration ratio, textural and morphological properties) of red pepper subjected to drying (hot air drying or freeze drying). The fractional factorial design was used to assess the impact of factors. The global Derringer desirability function was used to determine the optimal conditions for the best quality attributes of dried pepper. The drying method influenced total phenolic content, a* (redness), and initial rehydration ratio; pretreatment time significantly affected FRAP antiradical activity, a*, chroma and non-browning index, while pH-value had a significant effect on the texture of dried pepper. Non-enzymatic browning was reduced to 72.6%, while the DPPH antioxidant capacity of freeze-dried peppers was enhanced from 4.2% to 71.9%. Ultrasonic pretreatment led to changes in the pepper morphology, while potassium metabisulfite (KMS) was a more effective additive than citric acid.

AB - Gamma irradiation provides an alternative pathway to conventional gold nanoparticle synthesis because it is simple, fast, and economical. Here, we employed gamma irradiation at low doses (1–20 kGy) to obtain gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) anchored onto graphene oxide (GO) sheets. GO was selected as a suitable platform for the nucleation and growth of Au NPs because of its large surface area and good dispersibility in water due to the presence of polar oxygen-containing functional groups in its structure. Gamma irradiation at all the applied doses led to the reduction of chloroauric acid and the formation of evenly distributed Au NPs at the GO surface, simultaneously causing the reduction of GO and partial restoration of the graphene structure. As-prepared Au NPs have predominately spheric shapes and the smallest nanoparticles were reported for the dose of 1 kGy. The increase in the irradiation dose caused either the growth of larger particles (5 and 10 kGy) or the broad distribution of particles’ sizes (20 kGy). All samples showed a temperature increase upon exposure to 800 nm laser and photothermal efficiency was the highest for the sample prepared at 20 kGy.

AB - In this study, we report the influence of vanadium oxide (VO), as a photosensitive component, on the photoactivity of TiO2 nanotubes (TNTs). A series of TNTs of varying tube diameter were synthesized by the anodization of titanium foils at different voltages, while vanadium oxide was deposited on TNTs by wet chemical deposition. An improvement in the optical properties of nanotubes was observed after the deposition of vanadium oxide. An improvement in the optical properties (redshift in UV-Vis spectra) of TNTs and TNT/VO was noted. The photocatalytic activity was improved with increasing tube diameter, while it was weakened after the deposition of VO. Furthermore, photoactivity was investigated in photodiodes based on TNTs or TNT/VO and single crystals of CH3NH3PbI3. The photoelectric measurement revealed that different TNT diameters did not influence the I-V characteristic of the photodiodes, while the deposition of VO improved the photocurrent for smaller TNTs.

AB - To investigate the influence of spinel structure and sintering temperature on the functional properties of BaTiO3/NixZn1−xFe2O4 (x = 0, 0.5, 1), NiFe2O4, ZnFe2O4, and Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 were in situ prepared by thermal decomposition onto BaTiO3 surface from acetylacetonate precursors. As-prepared powders were additionally sintered at 1150 °C and 1300 °C. X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used for the detailed examination of phase composition and morphology. The magnetic, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties were investigated. The optimal phase composition in the BaTiO3/NiFe2O4 composite, sintered at 1150 °C, resulted in a wide frequency range stability. Additionally, particular phase composition indicates favorable properties such as low conductivity and ideal-like hysteresis loop behavior. The favorable properties of BaTiO3/NiFe2O4 make this particular composite an ideal material choice for further studies on applications of multi-ferroic devices.

AB - In this paper, the properties of organic-inorganic hybrid polymer materials, which were synthesized from an aluminosilicate inorganic matrix with the addition of brushite and aminosilane grafted on one side and PEI covalently bonded composites on the other side, were examined. The synthesized organic-inorganic hybrid polymers were examined in terms of a structural, morphological, thermo-gravimetric, and adsorption-desorption analysis and also as potential CO2 capturers. The structural and phase properties as well as the percentage contents of the crystalline and amorphous phase were determined by the X-ray diffraction method. The higher content of the amorphous phase in the structure of hybrid polymers was proven in metakaolin and metakaolin-brushite hybrid samples with the addition of amino silane and with 1,000,000 PEI in a structure. The DRIFT method showed the main band changes with the addition of an organic phase and inorganic matrix. Microstructural studies with the EDS analysis showed a uniform distribution of organic and inorganic phases in the hybrid geopolymers. The thermo-gravimetric analysis showed that organic compounds are successfully bonded to inorganic polymer matrix, while adsorption-desorption analysis confirmed that the organic phase completely covered the surface of the inorganic matrix. The CO2 adsorption experiments showed that the amine-modified composites have the higher capture capacity, which is 0.685 mmol·g−1 for the GM10 sample and 0.581 mmol·g−1 for the BGM10 sample, with 1,000,000 PEI in the structure. © 2023 by the authors.

AB - Powder mixture consisted of ZnO, Mn2O3 (MnCO3) and Fe2O3 blended powders, was found laminating during compaction. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and a combination of PVA with polyethylene glycol (PEG) added as a plasticizer, were introduced as polymer binders to improve the compaction of oxide mixtures. It has been done by forming a suspension of oxide mixture and varying the polymer solution concentration and composition. By evaporating the solvent, new materials were obtained, which consist of oxide particles bound via polymer. In such a manner obtained hybrid materials were characterized with attenuated total reflection Fourier transformed infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, differential thermal analysis (DTA) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The oxide polymer material was compacted at 200 MPa and the expansion of this compact during heating was monitored in temperature range up to 550 ºC with dilatometer. It was found that PVA forms graft polymer with PEG and specific interaction with oxide particles surface was revealed.

AB - BackgroundAlthough luteolin has been confirmed as potent anticancer agent, its potential application as therapeutic is limited by its water solubility. To overcome this shortcoming nanoparticle technology approach was applied. Owing to their proven low toxicity and the possibility to be easily functionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNP) were the nanosystem of choice used in this study. Novel luteolin capped gold nanoparticles (AuNPL) were synthesized and their anticancer effect towards human cervical adenocarcinoma HeLa cells was investigated in vitro.MethodsAuNPL were synthesized by reducing chloroauric acid by trisodium citrate with subsequent addition of luteoline during synthesis and their physicochemical characterization was done. AuNPL cytotoxicity against HeLa, human malignant melanoma A375, and normal human keratinocytes HaCaT cells was tested by MTT cell survival assay, and their IC50 values were determined. The capability of AuNPL to induce cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in HeLa cells were demonstrated by flow cytometry. The antioxidant activity of AuNPL was assessed by DPPH· and ABTS·+ scavenging assays. Cytoprotective properties of AuNPL towards HaCaT cells were examined by measuring the physiological and H2O2 induced intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels using flow cytometry. Also, genotoxicity of AuNPL in HaCaT cells was investigated by the single cell alkaline comet assay.ResultsSpherical AuNPL, stable in aqueous solution up to six months at 4 °C were obtained in the synthesis. The selectivity in the cytotoxic action of AuNPL on HeLa and A375 cancer cells compared with their cytotoxicity on normal keratinocytes HaCaT was observed. AuNPL exerted their cytotoxic activity against HeLa cells through accumulation of the cells in the subG1 phase of the cell cycle, inducing the apoptotic cell death mediated by the activation of caspase-3 − 8, and − 9. AuNPL antioxidative potential was confirmed by DPPH· and ABTS·+ scavenging assays. IC50 concentration of AuNPL exerted cytoprotective effect against HaCaT cells by the significant reduction of the physiological intracellular ROS level. Additionally, AuNPL were shown as more cytoprotective towards HaCaT cells then luteolin due to the more successful elimination of H2O2 induced intracellular ROS. Moreover, nontoxic concentrations of AuNPL did not cause considerable DNA damage of HaCaT cells, indicating low genotoxicity of the nanoparticles.ConclusionSynthesized AuNPL showed selective cytotoxic activity against HeLa cells, while being nontoxic and cytoprotective against HaCaT cells. The observed findings encourage further investigation of AuNPL as a promising novel anticancer agent.

To overcome this shortcoming nanoparticle technology approach was applied. AB - To investigate the effect of synthesis procedure and sintering temperature on the functional properties of perovskite/spinel ceramics, BaTiO3/CoFe2O4 composites were prepared by thermal decomposition, coprecipitation, and microemulsion method, and sintered at 1150°C and 1300°C. The phase composition and morphology of as-prepared powders as well as sintered ceramics were thoroughly examined by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The dielectric and ferroelectric measurements were performed in detail. Generally, the samples sintered at 1300°C had better performances than those sintered at 1150°C. The composite synthesized by thermal decomposition and sintered at 1300°C stands out among other prepared BaTiO3/CoFe2O4 ceramics, owing to high stability in the wide frequency range and low leakage currents. The obtained results indicate that such composite might be successfully applied as a functional multiferroic.

AB - Phyllosilicate mineral pyrophyllite is predominantly used in the ceramic industry because it exhibits high refractoriness. Due to its thermal transformation into mullite, pyrophyllite is stable at elevated temperatures, making it a suitable mineral additive for refractory non-shaped materials and various ceramic shaped products. In this study, pyrophyllite is employed as 50 % clay replacement in the ceramics and up to 30 % cement replacement in mortars. Physico-mechanical properties were investigated. The firing shrinkage in the ceramics treated at 1200 °C was reduced by pyrophyllite addition. Pyrophyllite acted as additional pozzolana during cement hydration. Within the microstructure, it formed micro-reinforcement in the shape of crystalline folia, which improves the mechanical properties of ordinary Portland cement, high aluminate cement, and blended cement mortars. The investigation proved the efficiency and suitability of pyrophyllite employed as a substitution for clay in ceramics and a cement replacement in mortars.

AB - BZT ceramics was prepared by using fine powder mixture of BaCO3, TiO2 and ZrO2 in the respective molar ratio to form Ba(Zr0.10Ti0.90)O3 via solid state reaction at elevated temperature. The prepared BZT was milled in the planetary ball mill from 0-120 min to achieve different powder grades from micron to nano-sized particles. After the powder characterization by XRD and SEM the samples were pressed in disc shape and sintered at different temperatures from 1100-1350°C in the air. The sintered samples were characterized by SEM and their density and average grain size was determined and presented vs. sintering temperature and powder grades (milling time). After that the silver epoxy electrodes were deposited on sintered disc samples. The disc samples capacity and resistivity were measured at low frequency region from 1 Hz to 200 kHz using low frequency impedance analyzer. The sintering temperatures and powder grades were used as parameters. Finally the specific resistance ρ, dielectric constant (ε' + jε") and tgδ where determined from the impedance measurements. The behavior of electronic properties where analyzed e.g. the relaxation effect of the space charge (inter-granular electric charges) vs. sintering temperature and ceramic grades. The results obtained were compared with best literature data for the losses in BZT ceramics at low frequencies.

AB - Thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate (AP), as a high energy oxidizer in composite solid rocket propellants (CSRP), greatly affects the burning rate of the propellant. This paper summarizes the results of a study of the synergistic catalytic activity of nano-CuO/Fe2O3 nanoparticles on thermal decomposition of AP. AP micro-particles are efficiently encapsulated with 1 and 5 wt.% of nano-CuO and/or nano-Fe2O3 nanoparticles by the fast-crash solvent-antisolvent technique. The efficiency of the encapsulation method was confirmed using FT-IR spectroscopy. Morphological characterization, performed using SEM-EDS microscopy, showed that encapsulation provides recrystallization and deagglomeration of AP and uniform nano-catalyst distribution. The catalytic efficiency of nano-CuO/ nano-Fe2O3 nanoparticles on the thermal decomposition of AP was investigated using DSC, and an increase in released heat was observed from 1453 to 1628 J/g. The catalytic activities of performed nano-catalysts were proven by decreasing the HTD and merging with the low decomposition temperature peak. The highest catalytic effect was obtained after encapsulating with 5 wt.% of nano-CuO and nano-Fe2O3 combined in a 50/50 mass ratio due to multiple mechanisms of catalytic activity of nano-Fe2O3. The effect of AP encapsulation with nano-Fe2O3 on the burning rate of CSRP was investigated and the obtained results showed a favorable effect on the combustion rate law. © 2023 Łukasiewicz Research Network – Institute of Industrial Organic Chemistry, Poland

AB - In this study, levan from Bacillus licheniformis NS032 was modified in an aqueous medium by octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA), and the properties of the obtained derivatives were studied. The maximum efficiency in the synthesis reaction was achieved at 40 °C and a polysaccharide slurry concentration of 30 %. Increasing the reagent concentration (2–10 %) led to an increase in the degree of substitution (0.016–0.048). Structures of derivatives were confirmed by FTIR and NMR. Scanning electronic microscopy, thermogravimetry, and dynamic light scattering analyses showed that the derivatives with degrees of substitution of 0.025 and 0.036 retained levan's porous structure and thermostability and showed better colloidal stability than the native polysaccharide. The intrinsic viscosity of derivatives increased upon modification, while the surface tension of the 1 % solution was lowered to 61 mN/m. Oil-in-water emulsions prepared with sunflower oil (10 % and 20 %) by mechanical homogenization and 2 and 10 % derivatives in the continuous phase showed mean oil droplet sizes of 106–195 μm, while the distribution curves exhibited bimodal character. The studied derivatives have a good capacity to stabilize emulsions, as they have a creaming index ranging from 73 % to 94 %. The OSA-modified levans could have potential applications in new formulations of emulsion-based systems. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

AB - In this study, in order to develop zein-based, edible, functional food-contact materials in different forms incorporating sage extract (10, 20, and 30%), solvent casting and electrospinning were employed. The study aimed to assess the effects of the applied techniques and the extract’s incorporation on the materials’ properties. The solvent casting generated continuous and compact films, where the extract’s incorporation provided more homogenous surfaces. The electrospinning resulted in non-woven mats composed of ribbon-like fibers in the range of 1.275–1.829 µm, while the extract’s incorporation provided thinner and branched fibers. The results indicated the compatibility between the materials’ constituents, and efficient and homogenous extract incorporation within the zein matrices, with more probable interactions occurring during the solvent casting. All of the formulations had a high dry matter content, whereas the mats and the formulations incorporating the extract had higher solubility and swelling in water. The films and mats presented similar DPPH• and ABTS•+ radical scavenging abilities, while the influence on Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium bacteria, and the growth inhibition, were complex. The antioxidant and antibacterial activity of the materials were more potent after the extract’s incorporation. Overall, the results highlight the potential of the developed edible materials for use as food-contact materials with active/bioactive functionality.

AB - The need for stable, chemical resistant and conductive materials is on the rise in recent times. Graphene shows promising electrical conductivity and chemical stability, but the production of a continual, conductive layer is limited and expensive. Silver nanowires (AgNWs) are both conducive and economically viable, but they are sensitive to water and oxygen. In this study, graphene oxide (GO) and AgNWs were synthesized and combined in different mass ratios (3:1, 2.5:1.5, and 1:1) to obtain chemically stable composites with improved electrical properties. Composites were reduced using ascorbic acid. With the increase of AgNWs to GO mass ratio, the surface of the free-standing composite film improved: the root mean square roughness was lowered from 376 nm for GO to 168 nm for the composite with the mass ratio of GO:AgNWs 1:1, while the sheet resistance was lowered from 146 × 106 Ω/□ to 4 Ω/□. For the first time, the effects of gamma irradiation on the structure of the composites were studied. Doses of 15, 25, and 35 kGy were applied.

AB - A novel magnetic polymer/bentonite composite was prepared by suspension copolymerization of glycidyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate in the presence of magnetic bentonite (MB-PGME) and functionalized with ethylene diamine and hexamethylene diamine (MB-PGME-ED and MB-PGME-HD). The obtained samples were characterized in terms of structure as well as thermal, magnetic and morphological properties. The sorption of rhenium (Re) and tungsten (W) from aqueous solution onto MB-PGME-ED and MB-PGME-HD was investigated considering their contact time and different initial ion concentration, giving possibility for usage of these composites as commercial sorbents. The sorption system follows the pseudo-second order and intraparticle diffusion kinetic models. The results indicated a better fit with the Freundlich isotherm model.

AB - In this study, the structure, morphology and composition of the synthesized magnetite/3D-printed wollastonite (3D_W/M) composite were characterized, and its adsorption performance with respect to As(V) and Cr(VI) were studied. Magnetite (MG) modified 3D printed wollastonite was obtained by two step procedure: modification of 3D_W with 3-aminoproylsilane (APTES) followed by controlled magnetite (MG) deposition to obtain 3D_W/M adsorbent. The structure/properties of 3D_W/M were confirmed by applying FTIR, XRD, TGD/DTA, and SEM analysis. The adsorption properties of hybrid adsorbents were carried out for As(V) and Cr(VI) removal-one relative to the initial pH value, the adsorbent mass, the temperature, and the adsorption time. Time-dependent adsorption study was best described by pseudo-second order equation, while Weber Morris analysis showed that intraparticle diffusion controled diffusional transport. Similar activation energy, 17.44 and 14.49 kJ•mol-1 for adsorption As(V) and Cr(VI) on 3D_W/M, respectively, indicated main contribution of physical adsorption. Determination of adsorption parameters was performed by applying different adsorption isotherm models, and the best fit was obtained using Freundlich model. The adsorption capacity of 24.16 and 29.6 mg g-1 for As(V) and Cr(VI) at 2o C, Co = 5.5 and 5.3 mg L-1, respectively, were obtained. Thermodynamic study indicated favourable process at a higher temperature. Preliminary fixed-bed column study and results fitting with Bohart-Adams, Yoon-Nelson, Thomas, and Modified dose-response model showed good agreement with results from the batch study.

AB - Newly designed mesoporous brushite-metakaolin-based geopolymer materials were examined with an idea for using this material as a potential adsorbent for Pb(II) removal from aqueous solutions. As a starting component for geopolymer synthesis, a natural raw kaolinite clay with the addition of 2 wt.%, 4 wt.%, 6 wt.%, 8 wt.%, and 10 wt.% of pure brushite was used. Phase, structural, morphological, and adsorption properties of newly synthesized mesoporous brushite-metakaolin geopolymer materials were examined in detail by the means of XRPD, FTIR, SEM-EDS, BET/BJH, and ICP-OES methods. The ICP-OES results showed that the synthesized material samples with 2 wt.%, 4 wt.%, and 6 wt.% of brushite possess significant adsorption properties and the mechanisms of the adsorption process can be attributed to chemisorption. abstract = "Newly designed mesoporous brushite-metakaolin-based geopolymer materials were examined with an idea for using this material as a potential adsorbent for Pb(II) removal from aqueous solutions. The most notable result is that brushite-metakaolin-geopolymer with 2 wt.% of brushite have the best efficiency removal, more than 85% of Pb(II).",

AB - The rise of innovation in the electrical industry is driven by the controlled design of new materials. The hybrid materials based on magnetite/nanocellulose are highly interesting due to their various applications in medicine, ecology, catalysis and electronics. In this study, the structure and morphology of nanocellulose/magnetite hybrid nanomaterials were investigated. The effect of nanocellulose loading on the crystal structure of synthesized composites was investigated by XRD and FTIR methods. The presented study reveals that the interaction between the cellulose and magnetic nanoparticles depends on the nanocellulose content. Further, a transition from cellulose II to cellulose I allomorph is observed. SEM and EDS are employed to determine the variation in morphology with changes in component concentrations. By the calculation of magnetic interactions between adjacent Fe3+ and Fe2+ ions within composites, it is determined that ferromagnetic coupling predominates.

AB - Due to the growing number of people infected with the new coronavirus globally, which weakens immunity, there has been an increase in bacterial infections. Hence, knowledge about simple and low-cost synthesis methods of materials with good structural and antimicrobial properties is of great importance. A material obtained through the combination of a nanoscale hydroxyapatite material (with good biocompatibility) and titanium dioxide (with good degradation properties of organic molecules) can absorb and decompose bacteria. In this investigation, three different synthesis routes used to prepare hydroxyapatite/titanium dioxide nanomaterials are examined. The morphology and semiquantitative chemical composition are characterized by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX). The obtained materials’ phase and structural characterization are determined using the X-ray powder diffraction method (XRD). The crystallite sizes of the obtained materials are in the range of 8 nm to 15 nm. Based on XRD peak positions, the hexagonal hydroxyapatite phases are formed in all samples along with TiO2 anatase and rutile phases. According to SEM and TEM analyses, the morphology of the prepared samples differs depending on the synthesis route. The EDX analysis confirmed the presence of Ti, Ca, P, and O in the obtained materials. The IR spectroscopy verified the vibration bands characteristic for HAp and titanium. The investigated materials show excellent antimicrobial and photocatalytic properties.

AB - Highly effective lignin-based microspheres were prepared by inverse copolymerization of lignin (kraft) from suspension, with poly(ethylene imine) and amino-functionalized magnetite nanoparticles (A-LMS_Fe3O4) or manganese(IV)oxide nanoparticles (A-LMS_MnO2). The XRD, FTIR, SEM, BET, TEM techniques, including the porosity determination, were performed to analyze morphological and structural properties of synthesized microspheres. The effect of pH, the adsorbent dosage, temperature and contact duration on a batch-mode adsorption efficiency of arsenate and chromate (oxy)anions removal was tested. Spontaneous adsorption was found to be feasible, reaching the adsorption capacities of Cr(VI) (62.9 mg g−1), As(V) (47.8 mg g−1) by A-LMS_Fe3O4, and of Cr(VI) (73.9 mg g−1), As(V) (62.5 mg g−1) using A-LMS_MnO2 adsorbent. Fast removal rates were confirmed via kinetic study, using pseudo-second order, the Weber-Morris and the single resistance mass-transfer model, with a limiting step of the diffusion transport through pores. The correlation of fixed-bed-column results with Bohart–Adams, Thomas, Yoon–Nelson and Dose Response models displayed that breakthrough behavior was influenced by flow rate and the inlet concentration. Significant potential of produced bio-adsorbent is further confirmed by the pore surface diffusion modeling, desorption study and adsorption from multi-component system using artificial water.

AB - Pure Ti films deposited by radio-frequency magnetron sputtering on FTO glass were anodized to fabricate TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) arrays. The TiO2 NTs/FTO samples were sintered at 450, 550 and 630o C, in ambient air. The thermal treatment did not influence the crystal phase composition, preserving in all cases the anatase single phase. As expected, the crystalline anatase quality improved with the annealing temperature. Nevertheless, slight differences in nanotubular morphology, such as the appearance of grains inside the walls, were observed in the case of the sample sintered at 630o C. Chemical analysis by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy of annealed samples revealed the presence of Sn inside TiO2 NTs, due to diffusion of Sn from the substrate to TiO2. For the substrate was used FTO glass whose top layer consists of SnO2 doped with F. Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry and Time-of-Flight Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis were carried out to study the elemental depth profile of the films. It was found that the temperature of sintering controls the Sn diffusion inside TiO2 film. Sn atoms diffuse towards the TiO2 NTs surface for the samples annealed at 450 and 550oC. The diffusion is however hindered in the case of the heat treatment at 630o C. Besides, the Ti diffusion into the SnO2 underlayer was observed, together with the formation of TiO2/SnO2 interfaces. One then expected but not a great difference in absorption between samples, since all contained anatase phase, as confirmed by Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy. A higher amount of Sn was however detected for the sample annealed at 550o C, which accounts for a slight red absorption shift. The importance of controlling the annealing parameters of the anodized TiO2/FTO structures was highlighted through the formation of TiO2-SnO2 interfaces and the Sn insertion from FTO, which can play an essential role in increasing the photoperformances of TiO2 NTs/FTO based structures of photovoltaic cells. © 2022 Authors.
