AB - The identification of agricultural food production systems has gained importance in order to protect both human health and the environment. The importance of organic production system of agriculture which involves the application of natural processes and substances, and limits or completely eliminates the use of synthesized means is emphasized. Knowledge of the mineral composition in tomato samples can be used as a potent tool in the identification of chemical markers as potential indicators of the farming system. A set of tomato samples taken from two factorial randomized trials were comprehended eight different varieties, belonging to four tomato types: large—BEEF and CLUSTER, and mini and midi—CHERRY and PLUM tomatoes, cultivated under two different farming systems: integral (IPM) and organic (O) were characterized based on the composition of the minerals. A total of 44 elements were quantified. To establish criteria for the classification of the samples and confirm a unique set of parameters of variation among the types of production, sophisticated chemometric techniques were used. The results indicate that the accumulation of elements varies between 8 tomato varieties and 2 different growing systems. The contents of Al, Mn, As, Pb, and some of the rare-earth elements (REEs) are able to distinguish between production types. Examination of different hybrids, which belong to different types in two production systems: organic and integral within Zeleni hit (official Enza and Vitalis trial and breeding station), was done with the aim of reaching a methodology of diversification, ie complete traceability of organic production, and to contribute to distinguishing types of agricultural systems and enhancing the possibility of acquiring a valuable authenticity factor about the type of agricultural production system employed for the cultivation of tomatoes.

AB - A simple organic-phase synthesis process was used to produce bare NiFe2O4 and ZnFe2O4 and core-shell ZnFe2O4@NiFe2O4 ferrite nanoparticles. X-ray powder diffractograms for all investigated powders show characteristic peaks of a spinel cubic structure without a secondary phase. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicated the presence of nanoparticles that are smaller than 20 nm. The release of divalent ions (Ni2+ and Zn2+) from synthesized nanoparticles that were dispersed in saline solution, phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and human serum, as determined by the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) method, was lower than 2 wt %. These results demonstrate the stability of the investigated nanoparticles in biologically relevant media and exclude the toxicity of Ni2+ and Zn2+ due to metal ion release, thereby opening a broad range of (bio)medical applications.

AB - Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) emerged as an attractive advanced biomaterial that provides desirable properties such as high strength, lightweight, tailorable surface chemistry, hydrophilicity, and biodegradability. BNC was successfully obtained from a wide range of carbon sources including sugars derived from grass biomass using Komagataeibacter medellinensis ID13488 strain with yields up to 6 g L-1 in static fermentation. Produced BNC was utilized in straightforward catalyst preparation as a solid support for two different transition metals, palladium and copper with metal loading of 20 and 3 wt%, respectively. Sustainable catalysts were applied in the synthesis of valuable fine chemicals, such as biphenyl-4-amine and 4'-fluorobiphenyl-4-amine, used in drug discovery, perfumes and dye industries with excellent product yields of up to 99%. Pd/BNC catalyst was reused 4 times and applied in two consecutive reactions, Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction followed by hydrogenation of nitro to amino group while Cu/BNC catalyst was examined in Chan-Lam coupling reaction. Overall, the environmentally benign process of obtaining nanocellulose from biomass, followed by its utilisation as a solid support in metal-catalysed reactions and its recovery has been described. These findings reveal that BNC is a good support material, and it can be used as a support for different catalytic systems.

AB - Trout farms are one of the major sources of pollution of highland streams and rivers. Since river sediment burdened with organic pollution binds greater amounts of heavy metals we investigated the influence of the trout farm on the accumulation of metals in the sediment, water and Ephemera danica larvae. Research was conducted seasonally (April, July, and October of 2015 and January of 2016) at one control locality (SK1) and three localities downstream from the farm (SK2-SK4). In agreement with the hypothesis the fish farm discharge induced localized and statistically significant increase of concentrations of Fe, Cu, Cr-,Cr- Ni, Pb and Cd in sediment and E. danica larvae, but not in water at locality SK2 just below the fish farm indicating that sediment is the main source of heavy metals for this organism. However, according to the values of Biota sediment accumulation factor (BSAF) only metals with low sediment concentrations (As, Cd and Cu) accumulated in the larvae. Moreover, BASF values for toxic metals (As, Cd and Cr) showed negative correlation with their concentrations in sediment indicating existence of defense mechanisms in E. danica against assimilation of these metals in high concentrations lethal for it. On the other hand, BSAF values for essential microelements (Cu and Fe) were positively correlated with their sediment concentrations. In conclusion the trout farm induced accumulation of heavy metals in river sediment and E. danica larvae proved to be a good bioindicators of the pollution of river systems by As, Cd and Cu.

AB - The aim of this study was to assess the accumulation and seasonal variations of 20 toxic and trace elements in the abdominal and dorsal muscle (DM), liver and gut contents (GCs) of Cyprinus carpio, and in the sediments and zooplankton from semi-intensive aquaculture ponds during a six-month production season (from May to October). Sediments showed the highest concentrations of the measured elements, followed by zooplankton, fish GCs and livers, while the lowest levels were present in fish muscles. Correspondence analysis revealed that the elemental composition of the fish GCs was mostly similar to that of the sediment and zooplankton. The element concentrations of carp liver and muscles were more similar to each other. Overall, the results indicate that fish liver was the main target organ accumulating Cu, Se and Zn, regardless of their initial amounts in the environment. A seasonal decrease of a range of elements in fish liver (Al, Co, Fe, Li, Mn, Ni, Pb and Sr) was evident towards the end of the investigation period. In addition, the fish DM showed a seasonal accumulation of Sr and Li. However, toxic elements i.e. As, B, Ba Hg and V did not show such a seasonal variation, and were evenly distributed between fish liver and muscles. The concentrations of some elements, such as As, in fish tissues were similar or even higher than in literature data from polluted sites, but none of them exceeded the maximum acceptable concentrations prescribed by Serbian legislation or by FAO or EU regulation.
