AB - Since the 20th century a large number of cultivars of African violet (Saintpaulia
ionantha L.) have been known. This species has soon positioned itself among the most
popular house plants. African violet has been characterised by decorative heart-shaped
leaves on long stems and different flower colours. Ready-to-use substrates are the best
choice for its growth and development. During the summer period it prefers parts of the
interior with a lot of light without direct exposure to sunlight. During bloom the violet
requires moderate amounts of water, while after bloom it requires a reduced amount of
water. In addition, during bloom African violet needs to be fertilised once a week. The
species is primarily propagated through leaf cuttings or seeds. The primary source of
information used in this work was also survey testing whose objective was to explore
the perception and attitudes of the respondents on ornamental features and the use of
different cultivars of African violet. The findings have shown that in terms of
ornamental features the respondents slightly prefer the cultivars with a more special
appearance of leaves and flowers, while from the aspect of use of violets in different
interiors, the respondents prefer to use more classic types of cultivars of this violet
species. The maintenance of the species is normally perceived as non-demanding. The
previously mentioned preliminary research can be used upon interior landscape design
and technologists can use it from the aspect of production and sale.

AB - Ornamental indoor flowering plant species are species that flower for more
than one season, as well as those that are grown primarily for the beauty of their
flowers. On their thickened stems, cactuses bear tufts of wool. They do not have
foliage and most of them have thorns. Succulents are Xerophytes that survive
drought by storing water in their organs. The specific objective of this paper was to
study the perception of ornamental characteristics and use of the selected species of
indoor plants, ornamental flowering species and cactuses and succulents. A survey
research was conducted in the area of the cities of Šibenik and Knin as a primary
source of information during the preparation of the paper. The survey research was
conducted in April and May 2018. The research findings have shown as follows: the
attractiveness of the use of the selected species in different interiors was graded
from 3.63 to 4.03 for ornamental flowering species and from 3.71 to 4.03 for
cactuses and succulents. Ornamental characteristics of ornamental flowering species
were graded from 3.84 to 4.13, as opposed to cactuses and succulents, which were
graded from 3.42 to 4.06. The effect of different species of indoor plants on human
mood was graded from 3.87 to 4.17 for ornamental flowering plant species and
from 3.57 to 3.97 for cactuses and succulents.

AB - The selection of appropriate trees is extremely important whilst designing different
landscape surfaces, since it frequently defines both the appearance and the comfort of the
open space. Ornamental values of the tree species throughout the year need to be considered.
Some deciduous trees can show their ornamental value even during the winter season. Due
to one or more ornamental characteristics (habitus, tree bark, tree trunk, branches, twigs and
fruits) during the winter season, around 10 species of trees can be highlighted in the sub Mediterranean climate, which is also the climate in the city of Knin. They include the
following tree species: Celtis australis L., Ulmus pumila L., Tilia cordata Mill, Morus nigra
L., Aesculus hippocastanum L., Acer negundo L. etc. Consequently, the objective of this
paper was to conduct research on perceptions and attitudes about ornamental characteristics
and the use of deciduous sub-Mediterranean trees during the winter season. The survey
research was conducted in April and May of 2017 on a sample of 50 respondents originating
from the area of the city of Knin and its outskirts. Based on the findings of the previously
mentioned research, the conclusion was reached that the respondents originating from the
city of Knin and its outskirts evaluated the ornamental characteristics for the use of eight out
of nine selected tree species with the average grade good. The hybrid plane tree referred to
as London plane or Platanus x hispanica Münchh received the highest grade. They most
probably liked this species due to its unusual appearance (habitus, fruit, tree trunk etc.) and
its less frequent use in parks and landscape surfaces. The findings of this research can be
used for the purpose of design of different landscape surfaces aimed at increasing user
comfort and satisfaction.
