AB - In this study, the adsorption behavior of silica adsorbents with different morphology and porosity has been examined in order to evaluate their use for the purification of wastewaters containing toxic environmental chemicals such as heavy metals and pesticide residues. Three different types of silica particles were investigated: (i) microporous silica core particles prepared by the hydrolysis and condensation of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), (ii) mesoporous silica particles generated by the neutralization of highly basic sodium silicate solution and (iii) silica core-shell particles composed of mesoporous silica layers around dense cores. Monodispersed spherical silica particles produced from TEOS have a microporous structure but the lowest adsorption efficiency and adsorption capacity of both heavy metals and pesticides. Polydispersed silica particles of irregular shape prepared from highly basic sodium silicate solution exhibit a mesoporous structure and high efficiency for the removal of heavy metals and pesticides from aqueous solutions. Monodispersed core-shell particles composed of a microporous core and a mesoporous shell also have high adsorption efficiencies in both combinations. Moreover, silica particles can be easily functionalized with ferrite nanoparticles, which allow the magnetic separation of silica adsorbents from aqueous solutions.

AB - The initial powder (16 % Fe2O3, 4 % BaCO3, 80 % BaTiO3) was mechanically activated in a planetary mill for 20, 80, 120, 160, 200 and 220 minutes in air. Modified Faraday method was used to perform magnetization measurements of compressed activated powder. The value of magnetization of these samples increases with increase in time of activation from 0.77 Am2kg-1 to 1.74 Am2kg-1. Thermomagnetic measurements in 20-600 °C temperature interval was used to investigate the dependence of magnetization on temperature. Multiple heating cycles of the sample activated for 120 min shows that after heating to 540 °C and 600 °C the value of magnetization increases 17 % and 62 %, respectively. Compressed powder samples were sintered for 2 hours at 1200 °C, leading to an increase in magnetization of 81 to 123 %. Thermomagnetic measurements of sintered samples in 20-450 °C temperature interval shows that sintered samples possess both ferromagnetic and ferroelectric properties. The relative dielectric constant of sintered samples at room temperature is around 8x104, depending on mechanical activation time.

AB - Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 was prepared from the starting materials BaCO3, SrCO3 and TiO2 through solid state reaction. Mixtures of these oxides were mechanically activated using a high-energy ball mill at different time intervals from 0 to 120 minutes. X-ray diffraction was employed in order to determine the crystal structure and gave information about composition of phase variation. It was observed that after 40 minutes early synthesis of Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 phase occurred. Particle size distribution along with scanning electron microscopy gave very useful information about powder morphology.
