AB - Thermally activated processes in cordierite-based ceramics were investigated to determine the effect of the mechanical activation and the addition of TeO2 on kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of these processes. Using a combination of dilatometry and DTA measurements in the 100–1400 °C temperature range, it was established that both the mechanical activation and the addition of TeO2 have a significant effect on processes in cordierite-based ceramics. A combination of 5 mass% addition of TeO2 and mechanical activation for 40 min reduced the sintering temperature of cordierite ceramics to around 1100 °C. In addition, the analysis of DTA measurements of mechanically activated samples indicates that the mechanical activation leads to intensification of the cordierite formation through an increase in concentration of surface defects and an increase in grain contact surface in the initial powder.

AB - In this study, sintering of two systems was investigated in parallel, pure cordierite 2MgO:2Al2O3:5SiO2, and cordierite with addition of 5 mass % TeO2. Green bodies were prepared from powder mixtures mechanically activated for 0, 10 and 40minutes by uniaxial pressing at 20 MPa followed by cold isostatic pressing (CIP) at 1000 MPa. The pressure-less sintering of these specimens was performed at a temperature of 1350 oC for 1 h, with 10 oC/min heating rate. Densities over 96 % of theoretical values were obtained for samples activated for 40 minutes. XRD measurements of MAS-40 sintered sample pointed at a mixture that consisted of several phases, majority of cordierite (> 73 %), spinel MgAl2O4 (> 22 %), ZrSiO4 (2.5 %), and Al2O3 (1.8%), while XRD pattern of MAS-40-TeO2 contained majority of cordierite (> 72 %), spinel MgAl2O4 (> 23 %), ZrSiO4 (1.9 %), and Al2O3 (1.9 %). The relative permittivities of the samples were measured in an open test fixture. The results for the real part of the complex relative permittivity of the samples, measured at 200 MHz, are shown in Table I. The loss tangent for all samples was very small, below the resolution of the measurement setup (0.005).
There is a strong correlation between the relative permittivity and the density, which agrees with our previous results.

AB - We present an overview of electromagnetic numerical techniques and measurement apparatus that have been used for assessing electrical properties of ceramic samples. The complex permittivity of the ceramics is typically the first electromagnetic property of interest. In the measurement approach that we use, ceramic samples, in the shape of pills with metalized faces, are placed in either a proprietary coaxial chamber or in an open fixture. The scattering parameter (reflection coefficient) is measured using a network analyzer. For the deembedding of the complex permittivity of a sample one needs precise electromagnetic simulations, including detailed models of the chamber or the open fixture. For lower and intermediate frequencies we use a numerical technique for electrostatic analysis, based on the method of moments with Galerkin testing. We create a database that is used afterwards for evaluation of the complex permittivity practically in real time. For higher frequencies, a full electrodynamic model of the chamber is developed with WIPL-D software. For all our deembedding techniques, we have also developed a detailed model of losses in the SMA coaxial connectors, which is essential for a precise evaluation of the imaginary part of the complex permittivity for low-loss dielectrics. We present results of several measurements in order to illustrate the used techniques.

AB - The aim of this study is to explore the influence of the processing route on the structural and physical properties of bulk MgTiO3 ceramics. Commercially available MgO and TiO2 powders were mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill. Green bodies were formed by an isostatic pressure of 300 MPa. The sintering of these samples was done either by the Two-Step Sintering (TSS) approach or by conventional pressureless sintering followed by Hot Isostatic Pressing (post-HIPing). The first set of compacts was sintered by TSS in air at 1300 degrees C for 30 min and the next step was performed at 1200 degrees C for 20 h. The density of the obtained samples after the two-step sintering reached almost 90% of the theoretical density (%TD). The second set of compacts was sintered at 1400 degrees C for 30 min in air. The samples without open porosity were post-sintered by the HIP at 1200 degrees C for 2 h in an argon atmosphere at a pressure of 200 MPa. The density significantly increased up to 96%TD. The differences between samples prepared by these two techniques were also analyzed by XRD and SEM. The lattice vibration spectra were obtained using Raman spectroscopy and they indicate a high degree of lattice disorder, as well as high values of the oxygen vacancy concentration. Electrical characteristic were established in the frequency range from 10 kHz to 10 GHz. The choice of the processing route had considerable influence on structural and physical properties of MgTiO3 ceramics.

abstract = "Cordierite-based ceramic materials are attracting much interest for their various applications in industry, for manufacturing multilayer circuit boards, catalytic converters, filters, thermal insulation, kiln furniture, components of portable electronic devices, etc. In order to reduce production costs and modify cordierite-based materials, mechanical activation can be used. In this study, microstructural and electrical properties of mechanically activated MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 system have been analyzed. The mixtures of MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 powders were mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill for the time periods from 0 to 160 min. Morphological investigations have been performed on the obtained powders. The effects of activation and two-step sintering process on microstructure were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Electrical measurements showed variations of the dielectric constant (epsilon(r)) and loss tangent (tan delta) as a function of time of mechanical treatment.",

AB - Mechanically activated powders (0, 10, 40, 80 and 160 minutes) were formed by isostatic pressure 300 MPa to cylindrical green bodies (φ 12 mm). First set of samples was sintered at 1300°C for 30 min in air (heating rate 10 °C/min, cooling rate 5 oC/min). These samples were re-sintered at 1200 oC for 20 h in air (heating rate 20 °C/min, cooling rate 10 oC/min). Samples reached almost 90 % TD. The second set of samples was sintered at 1400 °C for 30 in air (heating rate 10 oC/min, cooling rate 5 °C/min). Relative densities increased up to 93 % TD. The samples of absence of open porosity (MTO-10, 40, 80 and 160) were post-sintered by pressure assisted technique Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) at 1200 °C for 2 h in argon atmosphere with pressure 200 MPa. The samples increased densities up to 96 % TD for sample MT-160. Electrical measurements were performed in the microwave field of frequency.

AB - In this article, the advantages of combined sintering in comparison with the conventional one, of mechanically activated magnesium titanate ceramic were investigated. The stoichiometric mixtures of MgO and TiO2 were mechano-chemically activated for 0, 10, 40, 80 and 160 minutes by ball milling and then isostatically pressed (CIP) to form green bodies. Conventional sintering was realized by heating up to 1400 degrees C and hold for 30 minutes in air atmosphere. Resulting ceramic samples with closed porosity were post-sintered by pressure assisted technique Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) at 1280 degrees C/3h in argon atmosphere with a pressure of 200 MPa. The best results were observed in the case of samples post-sintered by HIP, when single-phase MgTiO3 samples with relative density of 96% were prepared.
