AB - Magnesium aluminate, MgAl2O4 and other alumina-based spinels are ceramics with high hardness, high melting point and mechanical strenght. Spinels can also be used as dielectrics in microwave applications. The goal of this study was to examine the effects of mechanical activation and sintering temperatures on physico-chemical properties of spinel. MgAl2O4 was produced by solid state reaction between MgO and α-Al2O3. The starting powders were mixed by ball milling to homogenize without significant particle size reduction. Mechanical activation of mixed powders was performed in a high-energy planetary ball mill in air for 1 h. Powders were compacted at 300 MPa. Heat treatments were performed in air, at temperatures ranging from 1200 to 1600 °C with 2 h dwell time, to determine the amount of spinel formation as a function of temperature. Phase composition and microstructure of initial powders and heated samples were determined by means of X-ray diffraction, particle size analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The influences of milling and consolidation parameters were studied by electrical measurements and mechanical characterization. The main conclusion of this study was that mechanical activation for 60 min initiated a mechano-chemical reaction, resulted in spinel formation at much lower temperatures than within non-activated powders, and indicated that final sintering stage started at much lower temperatures for activated powders. Changes in microstructure parameters, as a consequence of mechanical treatment and subsequent heating of investigated powder mixtures, strongly affect electrical and mechanical properties of the final ceramics.

AB - Thermally activated processes in cordierite-based ceramics were investigated to determine the effect of the mechanical activation and the addition of TeO2 on kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of these processes. Using a combination of dilatometry and DTA measurements in the 100–1400 °C temperature range, it was established that both the mechanical activation and the addition of TeO2 have a significant effect on processes in cordierite-based ceramics. A combination of 5 mass% addition of TeO2 and mechanical activation for 40 min reduced the sintering temperature of cordierite ceramics to around 1100 °C. In addition, the analysis of DTA measurements of mechanically activated samples indicates that the mechanical activation leads to intensification of the cordierite formation through an increase in concentration of surface defects and an increase in grain contact surface in the initial powder.

AB - The paper presents results of investigation of the influence of mechanical activation of shungite, a Russian natural mineral rich in silica and carbon, on its sintering behavior. The mechanical activation of the starting powder was performed in a high-energy ball mill in time intervals from 0 to 480 minutes. The phase composition of the starting mixtures and sintered samples was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction method. The scanning electron microscopy was performed in order to determine changes in the microstructure. Sintering was performed at various temperatures for 2 h, in an Ar and vacuum atmosphere. Dielectric properties of the sintered samples were measured in the frequency range from 1 to 500 MHz. The obtained results indicate that sintered shungite powder is a good candidate for applications as an absorber of electromagnetic waves in microwave engineering.

AB - The goal of this research was to produce an environmental friendly, energy saving inorganic polymer using a metakaolin as a precursor. The clean technology which conserve the natural environment was employed for the production of these materials. The used kaolinite is clay obtained from Rudovci, Lazarevac, Serbia. Physicochemical properties of kaolin were investigated in previous work by Nenadović et al. [1]. Metakaolin (MK) was prepared by calcining kaolinite at 750 °C for 1 h. The influence of alkali activation, i.e. different concentration of NaOH as a component of alkali activator mixture on the process of polymerization of metakaolin is investigated. The alkaline solution was prepared from sodium silicate and 2M, 4M, 6M and 8 M NaOH (analytical grade) (volume ratio Na2SiO3/NaOH = 1.6). The inorganic polymer (IP) samples were formed from metakaolin and the four different alkaline solution (solid/liquid ratio was about 1), which were mixed for 15 min and then left at room temperature for one day. Finally, the mixture was kept in a sample drying oven for 2 days at 60 °C. Process of aging time of inorganic polymer samples at 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th days is followed by some analytical methods (XRD, FTIR). X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used for characterization of metakaolin and metakaolin based inorganic polymers. After 28th days when the aging time were finished, on the surface of the samples were used scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). XRD analysis almost of all inorganic polymer samples revealed their amorphouslike structure with the position of an amorphous halo in the range 18°-32°, which indicates short range ordering of the reference sample with crystalline admixture of SiO2 (α-quartz, ICSD 89). The FTIR spectra of all samples shows a strong peak at ∼1000 cm−1 which is associated with Si–O–Si asymmetric stretching vibrations and is the finger print of the geopolymerization [2,3]. The FT-IR results show a shift of the Si-O or Si-O-X bands as the molarity of activator increasing during polymerization process, where X can be Si or Al. Both methods and XRD, as well as FTIR, show greater sensitivity to monitoring the effects of molarity, than the aging time within the same molarity to structural changes in inorganic polymer. SEM micrographs (Fig.1) showed a denser matrix, and a lower content of unreacted metakaolin particles due to increasing of molarity of NaOH. Structural reorganization of inorganic polymer samples occurs during the curing or aging in accordance with a polymerization mechanism.

AB - Considering geopolymers as inorganic polymers, they are actually amorphous network of interlinked silicate and aluminate groups, so they could be prospective ceramic precursors for materials with defined dimensions obtained by casting and firing, but not from powder processing. In this research, the starting material is metakaolin, which was obtained by calcining domes tic kaolinite clay. Initially, four series of alkaline activators of NaOH and sodium silicate have been used. Activators present the mixtures of Na2SiO3 and solutions of NaOH, of different molarities 2M, 4M, 6M and 8M. The prepared geopolymer slurries were cast into the designated near shape at room temperature and after that at 60oC. In fact, the post-synthesis curing process (28 days) has an important role in the obtaining good characteristics of geopolymers. Densities, viscosities and refractive index of alkaline activators were determined over the temperature range 15-60oC of process of geopolymerizations. Based on the obtained results of investigated parameters have been selected to predict the properties of materials. All geopolymer samples were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM/EDS analysis and Raman spectroscopy providing complementary and valuable information of the investigated materials. This route of ceramics production has advantages associated with producing an environmental friendly, energy saving, clean new technology of geopolymer materials.

AB - Semiconductor TiO2 photocatalysis is a heterogeneous catalysis, where the photons of the sun or artificial light source are activating the catalyst that enters in reactions. The targeted real-world applications are in environmental protection and remediation such as wastewater treatment, air purification and decomposition of harmful organic pollutants. In this talk, I present the synthesis of nanotubular, thin TiO2 coatings with altered morphology and crystallinity made by anodization technique. The influence of the anodization parameters and post-synthesis annealing conditions on the photocatalytic methyl orange dye decomposition was assessed. Different morphology, crystallinity and introducing a dopant into lattice increase electron transport and electron lifetime which further improve photocatalytic activity.

AB - Sintered alumina powder represents suitable material for usage in various industry fields (e.g., as chip carriers in electronics, microwaves, jewelry production), due to convenient physical properties, such as sinterability, electrical and mechanical features. Those properties can be modified by addition of different oxides and/or mechanical treatment. Therefore, in this investigation the alumina was doped with 1 wt. % of Cr2O3, Mn2O3 and NiO, respectively, followed by 1 hour of mechanical activation at 400 rpm in planetary ball mill. Sintering of powder mixtures was tracked by sensitive dilatometer up to 1400 °C. The final density values varied from cca. 2 ̶ 3.2 g/cm3. Changes in microstructure were observed by means of SEM. The influence of additives along with mechanical activation is monitored trough changes in electrical permittivity and loss tangent. Compared to pure alumina, the additives lower the relative permittivity and increase dielectric losses. For a given mixture, the sintering increases the relative permittivity and decreases losses.

AB - Recently, with the huge use of smart gadgets, developing of smart jewelry represents a very interesting segment in material science, as well as in electronic science. Alumina is widely used ceramic in many industrial fields as pigments, catalysis, microelectronics, etc., mostly because of its low cost and appropriate mechanical and electrical properties, high surface area and thermal stability. Also, modified alumina could be applied in production of smart jewelry. Thus, the main objectives of this investigation is to improve features of sintered alumina doped with Mn2O3 along with mechanical treatment, in order to obtain strong ceramic with low values of dielectric loss and low relative dielectric permittivity, as well as esthetic. Commercial alumina powder was doped with 1 wt % of manganese oxide and treated in planetary ball mill for an hour. Characteristic temperatures of both powders (non-activated and activated one) were investigated in detail by DTA and TG analyses. After sintering at 1200, 1300, and 1400 oC for 2 h, XRD patterns and SEM images were recorded. Furthermore, mechanical and electrical properties were examined for all sintered samples.

AB - This study presents the synthesis of porous cordierite- based ceramics and its surface activation by polyethylenimine/nano-CeO2 for the heavy metal removal. The synthesis was carried out by the addition of following powders: MgO, Al2O3, and SiO2 in 2:2:5 molar ratios, respectively. The oxide(s) mixture was further processed in two sequential stages: i) ball milled in the ethanol for 40 minutes and palletized under the pressure of 3 t/cm2, as a pre-sintering process, and ii) the pallets were further sintered for 2h in the air atmosphere at 1350 oC, under a heating rate of 20 oC/min. The sintered mineral composite was crashed and sieved, and mixed with 20 wt % of nanocellulose, as a pore forming agent. Nanocellulose mixture was pressed into pallets under 5 t/cm2 and sintered at 700 oC, under a heating rate of 5 oC/ min. The obtained synthetic cordierite was further tested as the adsorbent activated by polyethylenimine/ nano-CeO2 for the removal of Ni2+ and Cd2+ -ions. The adsorption isotherms, kinetics models, and thermodynamic parameters were also analyzed, manifesting that the adsorption is a spontaneous and endothermic process. The phase composition of the pristine and activated cordierite was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction method (XRD), Fourier transformation infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This work has shed light on the mechanism of heavy metals removal from the aquatic medium using the novel hybrid (nano)synthesized material.

AB - During the compaction of the powder mixture of ZnO and Mn2O3 (MnCO3) and Fe2O3 compacts were find fragile for further handling. Poly vinyl alcohol PVA was used as a binder in an unusual 20% PVA content. We made as well 2% PVA with 0.6% Poly ethylene glycol PEG and 20% PVA with 6 % PEG. Binder was wrapped over the powder by suspension forming in the polymer water solution and drying afterwards until all water content evaporates. On the these obtained powders employed characterization techniques were: Fourier transformed Infra red FTIR spectra with ATR attenuated total reflection technique as well as differential thermal analysis DTA on the device with low temperature sensitivity and TEM transmition electron microscopy. All binder concentrations gave compacts with good mechanical properties, that can be handled with ease but with adding, a PEG as plasticizer the operating of the anvil and piston were extremely difficult due to friction.

AB - There is potential use of red mud for synthesis of inorganic polymeric materials through a geopolymerization process as an alternative in the sectors of construction and building materials. By introducing of inorganic and organic modificators of microstructure (calcium hydroxide, bifunctional epoxy resins, or various types of alkoxylanes) during the geopolymer synthesis the enhanced values of ductility and strength can be obtained. Research was performed on alumosilicate material (red mud and metakaolin) and alkali activator raw mixture with defined quantity of modificator. The best sinthesys conditions were identified. Post-synthesis curing also play important role in obtaining of good-performing geopolymers. Characteristics of geopolymers were defined by measuring of compressive strength, N2-physisorption, as well as by SEM analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). In addition the lower value of zeta potential was identified as the assisting factor for the specific structure domains formation (within the certain range of pH) accompanied by the high compressive strength.

AB - Dental ceramics were increasingly introduced to restorative dentistry at the beginning of the XX century as porcelain jacket crowns. However, their limited use in clinical practice was mainly associated to the mechanical shortcomings. In the early sixties porcelain-fused to-metal restorations were developed and for years have represented the “gold standard”, thanks to their good mechanical properties and to somewhat satisfactory esthetics. In the last thirty years, the growing demand for highly esthetic restorations has led to development of new all-ceramic materials and techniques. All-ceramic restorations combine esthetic veneering porcelains (consisting of a glass and a crystalline phase of fluoroapatite, aluminum oxide, or leucite) with strong ceramic cores, mainly made of lithium-disilicate, aluminum-oxide or zirconium-oxide. The most common complication is fracture that can initiate from several different sites on the surface, at interfaces, or within the material. While conventional methods of ceramic fabrication usually contain internal porosity, CAD/CAM technology ensures almost no internal defects. Such improvements in ceramic processing have allowed better structural reliability and greatly contributed to the success of all-ceramic systems. The aim of this study was to provide an overview on development of ceramic systems used in dentistry, their processing, including computer-aided design and computer-aided (CAD/CAM) technology, applications and future perspectives in this field.

AB - Nanomaterials development is a rapidly emerging field of research with enormous potential for societal and economic benefits. In agro and food industries dimension-dependent properties or phenomena of nanomaterials may be used for various functional effects such as increased bioavailability or decreased toxicity of products, better detection of pathogens, improved food packaging materials, or improved delivery of nutrients. Since these effects may derive from altered or unique characteristics of materials in the nanoscale range that are not normally observed or expected in larger-scale materials with the same chemical composition, such changes raise questions about the safety, effectiveness, performance, quality or public health impact of nanotechnology products. In this article, we have reviewed the fabrication, properties, and selected applications of nanostructured TiO2 based materials. Special attention has been paid to TiO2 nanoparticles and nanotubes fabrication perspectives and applications in agriculture. We have shown that high photocatalytic disinfection and photobiological effects of nanostructured TiO2 coupled with its low price, nontoxicity, and stable performance especially provide new approaches for solving environmental pollution and pesticide residue problems in agriculture.

AB - In this study, sintering of two systems was investigated in parallel, pure cordierite 2MgO:2Al2O3:5SiO2, and cordierite with addition of 5 mass % TeO2. Green bodies were prepared from powder mixtures mechanically activated for 0, 10 and 40minutes by uniaxial pressing at 20 MPa followed by cold isostatic pressing (CIP) at 1000 MPa. The pressure-less sintering of these specimens was performed at a temperature of 1350 oC for 1 h, with 10 oC/min heating rate. Densities over 96 % of theoretical values were obtained for samples activated for 40 minutes. XRD measurements of MAS-40 sintered sample pointed at a mixture that consisted of several phases, majority of cordierite (> 73 %), spinel MgAl2O4 (> 22 %), ZrSiO4 (2.5 %), and Al2O3 (1.8%), while XRD pattern of MAS-40-TeO2 contained majority of cordierite (> 72 %), spinel MgAl2O4 (> 23 %), ZrSiO4 (1.9 %), and Al2O3 (1.9 %). The relative permittivities of the samples were measured in an open test fixture. The results for the real part of the complex relative permittivity of the samples, measured at 200 MHz, are shown in Table I. The loss tangent for all samples was very small, below the resolution of the measurement setup (0.005).
There is a strong correlation between the relative permittivity and the density, which agrees with our previous results.

AB - We present an overview of electromagnetic numerical techniques and measurement apparatus that have been used for assessing electrical properties of ceramic samples. The complex permittivity of the ceramics is typically the first electromagnetic property of interest. In the measurement approach that we use, ceramic samples, in the shape of pills with metalized faces, are placed in either a proprietary coaxial chamber or in an open fixture. The scattering parameter (reflection coefficient) is measured using a network analyzer. For the deembedding of the complex permittivity of a sample one needs precise electromagnetic simulations, including detailed models of the chamber or the open fixture. For lower and intermediate frequencies we use a numerical technique for electrostatic analysis, based on the method of moments with Galerkin testing. We create a database that is used afterwards for evaluation of the complex permittivity practically in real time. For higher frequencies, a full electrodynamic model of the chamber is developed with WIPL-D software. For all our deembedding techniques, we have also developed a detailed model of losses in the SMA coaxial connectors, which is essential for a precise evaluation of the imaginary part of the complex permittivity for low-loss dielectrics. We present results of several measurements in order to illustrate the used techniques.

AB - In this study, porous cordierite-based ceramics was synthesized. In the first step, MgO, Al2O3, and SiO2 (all Aldrich, p.a.) were used. MgO and Al2O3 powders were calcined at 1000 oC for 2 h, in order to avoid hydroxides. They were mixed in 2:2:5 molar ratio, in order to form cordierite, Mg2Al4Si5O18. Ethanol was added to the mixture, and then milled in a Fritsch Pulverisette planetary mill, with 300 rpm, in air atmosfere. Times of activation were 0, 10, 40, and 80 min, while balls and vessels were made from ZrO2, and powder to balls mass ratio was 40:1. After milling, powders were dried, and then pressed under 3 t/cm2. Pallets with 8 mm radius were sintered in air at 1350 oC, for 2 h, heating rate was 20 oC/min. Sintered samples were crashed and sieved. In the secons step, the as-prepared cordierite was mixed with 20 wt.% yeast (0.1 g yeast + 0.4 g cordierite per sample). The other mixture was with 20 wt.% nanocellulose (0.1 g NC + 0.4 g cordierite per sample). Both mixtures were pressed into pallets under 5 t/cm2 and sintered at 700 oC, with 5 oC/min heating rate, in air atmosfere. During the second sintering regime, porous cordierite-based ceramics was obtained. The phase composition of the sintered samples as well as microstructures was analyzed by the means of X-ray diffraction method and SEM. Cordierite was the most abundant phase in all sintered samples. It was observed that addition of different pore-forming agent resulted in significantly different microstructures.

AB - Dilatometry is defined as the dimensional change of a solid specimen recorded during temperature schedule. Set of data obtained in such a manner are known as dilatogram. Dilatograms for different sort of materials represent an important trace for deduction of other materials properties than volume. Property parameters directly appointable from the dilatogram graph are: thermal expansion coefficient for the temperature interval, glass transition temperature, phasetransition temperature, sintering shrinkage and sintering temperature for maximal shrinkage rate, crystallization point temperature for amorphous bulk metallic glasses, defect annealing temperature. From dilatometric data we can also calculate more complex values such as the sintering activation energy, deduce sintering kinetic mechanisms, for the phase transition kinetic parameters and phase composition, defect concentration, materials thermal expansion coefficient at a particular temperature, solid state reaction kinetic parameters. Dilatometric devices regarding the construction are divided into contact and non contact ones, for they physically exert force on the specimen or not. Furthermore, contact dilatometric devices can be ascribed due to their construction as vertical and horizontal. This categorization leads to different and changeable contact force on the specimen. Vertical dilatometers usually use higher and temporarily changeable forces applied on the specimen. They can be, with suitable equipment, used for other mechanical properties determination than expansion, such as compressibility, tension or inflection. Non contact devices are divided into interferometric and optical. Interferometric ones use a two laser beams construction where for the length change measuring they count the number of wave lengths that are formed as a path difference between two beams. Optical devices, however, uses monochromatic light projected on the specimen that forms shadow recorded on an optical sensor. Obtained images are then analyzed for the specimen`s dimensional change.

AB - The initial powder (16 % Fe2O3, 4 % BaCO3, 80 % BaTiO3) was mechanically activated in a planetary mill for 20, 80, 120, 160, 200 and 220 minutes in air. Modified Faraday method was used to perform magnetization measurements of compressed activated powder. The value of magnetization of these samples increases with increase in time of activation from 0.77 Am2kg-1 to 1.74 Am2kg-1. Thermomagnetic measurements in 20-600 °C temperature interval was used to investigate the dependence of magnetization on temperature. Multiple heating cycles of the sample activated for 120 min shows that after heating to 540 °C and 600 °C the value of magnetization increases 17 % and 62 %, respectively. Compressed powder samples were sintered for 2 hours at 1200 °C, leading to an increase in magnetization of 81 to 123 %. Thermomagnetic measurements of sintered samples in 20-450 °C temperature interval shows that sintered samples possess both ferromagnetic and ferroelectric properties. The relative dielectric constant of sintered samples at room temperature is around 8x104, depending on mechanical activation time.

AB - Commercial Mn-Zn powder (Mn0.63Zn0.37Fe2O4, 93 wt. % and Fe2O3 7 wt. %) was milled 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 hours in a planetary ball mill. Powders were characterized with XRD, SEM and particle seizer. Subsequent heating was monitored on TGA/DTA in air atmosphere. After compaction of the milled powders, sintering was also performed in a dilatometric device. Sintered specimens were characterized microstructurally with SEM on a fresh breakage. Ferrite powders changed with milling as well as with second run heating are characterised to approach the possible best ratio of the milling and heating that should be used to obtain desired micrstructure.

AB - In this study, highly porous macro- and micro-cellular wollastonite-based ceramics was synthesized. Ceramic precursor, methylhydrocyclosiloxane, together with micro-sized CaCO3, was used as starting material. After 20 min of ultrasound treatment, and calcination at 250 oC for 30 min, different pore-forming agents were added to the as-obtained powders. Differential thermal analysis was used to determine characteristic temperatures of processes occurring within powders during heating. Based on the obtained results, sintering regime was set up. Prepared mixtures were pressed into pallets and sintered at 900 oC. During the sintering regime, highly porous wollastonite-based ceramics was obtained. The phase composition of the sintered samples as well as microstructures was analyzed by the means of X-ray diffraction method and SEM. Two-phase system was detected in all samples, CaSiO3 wollastonite and Ca2SiO4 larnite, and their ratio varied with each pore-forming agent. It was observed that addition of different pore-forming agent resulted in significantly different microstructures.

AB - Novel macro/micro-porous monolith material containing surface amino functional groups was developed for efficient cationic pollutant removal. The monolith was prepared by copolymerization process of monomers glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) and modified low molar mass poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). In order to improve mechanical stability of GMA-EGDMA monolith, surface of PMMA was modified with ethanol amine in first step, and introduction of methacryloyl chloride in a second step produced m-PMMA. Synthesized GMA-EGDMA-m-PMMA monolith was modified with poly(ethylene imine) (PEI). The effectiveness of copolymerization, as well as introduction of amino groups via PEI modification were confirmed by FTIR and Raman analyses. The morphological appearance of the synthesized monolith, examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), clearly indicates porous structure. The results of textural parameters, i.e. monolith porosity, determined by using liquid saturating method, indicate high degree of porosity. Cationic pollutant removal capacity, cadmium and lead, of 32.0 and 42.5 mg g−1 at 25 °C indicates that this monolith is high efficient. This macro/micro-porous monolith could be a promising adsorbent because of its low-cost synthesis process and excellent performance.
