AB - Post-sintering of magnesium titanate ceramics by hot isostatic pressing (HIP) in an oxygen-free atmosphere significantly alters various electrical properties of the product. In particular, the sintered material becomes a semiconductor. The aims of this paper are: to extend our investigations of the electrical properties of this material by expanding the frequency range of measurements, to design interpolation formulas for the frequency dependence of the complex relative permittivity, and to propose HIP-sintered magnesium titanate as a material for thermistors that have a negative-temperature-coefficient resistance (NTCR), as well as for varistors.

AB - Mechanically activated powders (0, 10, 40, 80 and 160 minutes) were formed by isostatic pressure 300 MPa to cylindrical green bodies (φ 12 mm). First set of samples was sintered at 1300°C for 30 min in air (heating rate 10 °C/min, cooling rate 5 oC/min). These samples were re-sintered at 1200 oC for 20 h in air (heating rate 20 °C/min, cooling rate 10 oC/min). Samples reached almost 90 % TD. The second set of samples was sintered at 1400 °C for 30 in air (heating rate 10 oC/min, cooling rate 5 °C/min). Relative densities increased up to 93 % TD. The samples of absence of open porosity (MTO-10, 40, 80 and 160) were post-sintered by pressure assisted technique Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) at 1200 °C for 2 h in argon atmosphere with pressure 200 MPa. The samples increased densities up to 96 % TD for sample MT-160. Electrical measurements were performed in the microwave field of frequency.

AB - The intergrain ceramic structures are very complex and difficult to describe by using traditional analytical methods. In this study, in order to establish grain shapes of sintered ceramics, new approach on correlation between microstructure and properties of doped BaTiO3 -ceramics based on fractal geometry has been developed. BaTiO3 ceramics doped with CeO2, Bi2O3, Fe2O3, CaZrO3 Nb2O5, MnCO3 , La2O3, Er2O3, Yb2O3 and Ho2O3, were prepared using conventional solid state procedure and sintered at 1350°C. The sintered specimens microstructure was investigated by SEM-5300 and capacitance has been done using LCR-metra Agilent 4284A. The fractal modeling method using a reconstruction of microstructure configurations, like grains or intergranular contacts shapes has been successfully done. Furthermore, the area of grains surface was calculated by using fractal correction which expresses the grains surface irregularity through fractal dimension. For better and deeper the ceramics material microstructure characterization the Voronoi model and mathematical statistics calculations, are applied, also. The fractal nature for ceramics structure analysis providing a new ideas for modeling the grain shape and relations between the BaTiO3 ceramic structure and dielectrical properties and new frontier for higher integration on electronic circuits. The presented results indicate that fractal method for structure ceramics analysis creates a new approach for describing, predicting and modeling the grain shape and relations between the BaTiO3 -ceramic structure and dielectric and generally electric and microelectronics properties.

AB - In this article the influence of ball milling process on structure of MgO-TiO2 system, along with its influence on electrical properties of post-sintering samples, were investigated. Mixtures of MgO-TiO2 powders were mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill for time interval from 0 to 120 minutes. On thus obtained powders, structural investigations have been performed. N2 adsorption method was used to determine the BET specific surface area and pore size distribution. Unusual results were obtained: specific surface area continuously decreases up to 40 minutes of activation and after that increases, reaching its minimum value of 5.5 m2/g. The influence of mechanical activation on lattice vibration spectra was examined by Raman spectroscopy at room temperature. For sintered samples characterization, Raman scattering spectroscopy has been used. Very similar spectra for all samples were observed. Raman spectroscopy of sintered samples indicates a presence of two phases, while varieties in spectra were explained with different ratio of present phases. Effect of activation and sintering process on microstructure was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Electrical measurements showed difference in dielectric constant (εr), loss tangent (tgδ) and specific resistance (ρ) as a function of time of mechanical treatment.

AB - Since that the scientific and technological efforts to further miniaturization, "better packaging" and higher levels of integration of electronic components and subsystems, and modern microelectronics devices are increasingly limited, the new field of scientific views and perspectives in previously presented scientific work, contribute and create new solutions of electronics and materials science higher unity with the goal to be recognized the desired functions and highly integrated electronic properties with in the different microstructures levels. In this study, in order to establish grain shapes of sintered ceramics, new approach on correlation between microstructure and properties of rare-earth doped BaTiO3 -ceramics based on fractal geometry, related to intergranular contact surfaces and mathematical statistics calculations has been developed. BaTiO3-ceramics doped with different additives (Mn, La, Er, Yb, Ho,) were prepared using conventional solid state procedure and sintered at 1320C. The microstructure of specimens was investigated by SEM-5300 and capacitance has been done using LCR-meter Agilent 4284A. By using fractal modeling method of microstructure configurations reconstruction, like shapes of grains or intergranular contacts has been successfully done. Furthermore, the area of grains surface was calculated using fractal correction that expresses the irregularity of grains surface through fractal dimension For better and deeper characterization of the ceramics material microstructure the Voronoi model, mathematical statistics calculations, microstructure analysis on vertical view od the fracture between two pieces of samples, and contact surfaces analysis between the particles and grains, are applied The presented results indicate that fractal method for analysis of the structure of ceramics provides a new approach for describing, predicting and modeling the grain shape and relations between the BaTiO3 -ceramic structure and dielectrical properties.

abstract = "Since that the scientific and technological efforts to further miniaturization, "better packaging" and higher levels of integration of electronic components and subsystems, and modern microelectronics devices are increasingly limited, the new field of scientific views and perspectives in previously presented scientific work, contribute and create new solutions of electronics and materials science higher unity with the goal to be recognized the desired functions and highly integrated electronic properties with in the different microstructures levels. Furthermore, the area of grains surface was calculated using fractal correction that expresses the irregularity of grains surface through fractal dimension For better and deeper characterization of the ceramics material microstructure the Voronoi model, mathematical statistics calculations, microstructure analysis on vertical view od the fracture between two pieces of samples, and contact surfaces analysis between the particles and grains, are applied The presented results indicate that fractal method for analysis of the structure of ceramics provides a new approach for describing, predicting and modeling the grain shape and relations between the BaTiO3 -ceramic structure and dielectrical properties.",

AB - Starting mixtures of BaCO3, ZnO and TiO2 powders were mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill for various periods of time. The powders obtained were sintered nonisothermally to temperatures between 1100 and 1300°C and then held at those temperatures for 120 min. Results of structural characterization using X-ray powder diffraction method, DTA analyses and SEM analyses were conducted for activated and sintered samples. These results were correlated with the results of electric resistivity, capacitance and loss tangent of the samples and it was found that with increasing in milling time, the increase in values of electrical properties was noticed.

AB - La/Mn codoped BaTiO3 with different La2O3 content, ranging from 0.1 to 5.0 at% La, was investigated regarding their microstructural and dielectric characteristics. The content of 0.05 at% Mn was constant in all investigated samples. The samples were sintered at 1320°C and 1350°C for two hours. Microstructural studies were done using SEM and EDS analysis. The fine-grained microstructure was obtained even for low content of La. The appearance of secondary abnormal grains with serrated features along grain boundaries was observed in 1.0 at% La-BaTiO3 sintered at 1350°C. Nearly flat permittivity-temperature response was obtained in specimens with 2.0 and 5.0 at% La. Using the modified Curie-Weiss law a critical exponent γ and C' were calculated. The obtained values of γ pointed out the diffuse phase transformation in heavily doped BaTiO3 and great departure from the Curie-Weiss law for low doped ceramics.

AB - In this article, ytterbium and erbium oxides are used as doping materials for barium titanate (BaTiO(3)) materials. The amphoteric behavior of these rare-earth ions leads to the increase of dielectric permittivity and decrease of dielectric losses. BaTiO(3) ceramics doped with 0.01-0.5 wt% of Yb(2)O(3) and Er(2)O(3) were prepared by conventional solid-state procedure and sintered at 1320 degrees C for 4 h. In BaTiO(3) doped with a low content of rare-earth ions (0.01 wt%) the grain size ranged between 10 and 25 pm. With the higher dopant concentration of 0.5 wt%, the abnormal grain growth is inhibited and the grain size ranged between 2 and 10 mu m. The measurements of capacitance and dielectric losses as a function of frequency and temperature have been carried out in order to correlate the microstructure and dielectric properties of doped BaTiO(3) ceramics. The temperature dependence of the dielectric constant as a function of dopant amount has been investigated.
