AB - Photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) was investigated using commercial TiO2 P25 nanoparticles supported on natural zeolite clinoptilolite (Cli). Employing ultrasound assisted solid-state dispersion method hybrid photocatalyst containing 20 wt% of TiO2, marked TCli-20, was prepared. The structural, morphological and surface properties, and particle size distribution of TCli-20 were studied by X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, Brunner-Emmet-Teller method and laser diffraction. The results revealed a successful loading of TiO2 P25 nanoparticles on Cli surface and the preservation of both zeolitic structure and optical properties of TiO2. The influence of catalyst dose, pH value and the addition of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was evaluated. The optimal reaction conditions were 2 g/L of catalyst at near-neutral conditions (pH = 6.4) for complete BPA (5 mg/L) photodegradation after 180 min of exposure to simulated solar light. The addition of H2O2 was beneficial for the degradation process and led to the removal of BPA after 120 min of irradiation. BPA removal (60% for 180 min of irradiation) was reduced when TCli-20 was tested in bottled drinking water due to the presence of bicarbonate ions which acted as scavengers for hydroxyl radicals. Even though the photocatalytic activity of TCli-20 decreased after several cycles of usage, 70% of BPA was still successfully degraded during the fourth cycle. The reusability study showed easy separation, stability and good photocatalytic ability of investigated cost-effective hybrid photocatalyst. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

AB - Catalytic materials are the greatest challenge for the commercial application of water electrolysis (WEs) and fuel cells (FCs) as clean energy technologies. There is a need to find an alternative to expensive and unavailable platinum group metal (PGM) catalysts. This study aimed to reduce the cost of PGM materials by replacing Ru with RuO2 and lowering the amount of RuO2 by adding abundant and multifunctional ZnO. A ZnO@RuO2 composite in a 10:1 molar ratio was synthesized by microwave processing of a precipitate as a green, low-cost, and fast method, and then annealed at 300°C and 600°C to improve the catalytic properties. The physicochemical properties of the ZnO@RuO2 composites were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The electrochemical activity of the samples was investigated by linear sweep voltammetry in acidic and alkaline electrolytes. We observed good bifunctional catalytic activity of the ZnO@RuO2 composites toward HER and OER in both electrolytes. The improved bifunctional catalytic activity of the ZnO@RuO2 composite by annealing was discussed and attributed to the reduced number of bulk oxygen vacancies and the increased number of established heterojunctions. AB - Dual templating approach, using hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), was employed in an attempt to synthesize hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite. Amount of mesoporogen and the duration of aging of the precursor were varied. Majority of the synthesis routes resulted in phase separation, yielding separate ZSM-5 and amorphous mesoporous material. The relative amounts of the two phases were dependent on the CTAB amount ratio and also significantly on the duration of precursor aging before CTAB addition. One particular combination of the two factors led to the formation of a homogeneous hierarchical form of ZSM-5 with leafy morphology, consisting of intergrown thin crystalline sheets which formed flower-like structures. The hierarchical ZSM-5 possessed significant microporous (≈95 m2/g) and highly developed mesoporous surface (≈470 m2/g), with a relatively broad distribution of mesopore sizes (<20 nm). The acidity of all samples was studied in detail. Isothermal microcalorimetry/volumetry of ammonia adsorption provided quantitative data on the number and distribution of strength of acidic sites. In situ FTIR of pyridine and collidine adsorption was used to quantify Brønsted and Lewis acid sites, and to provide information on their location - in the micropores or mesopores/external surface. The hierarchical ZSM-5 possessed both Lewis and Brønsted acidity, with Brønsted sites located mainly in the micropores. All samples were fully characterized using XRD, low temperature nitrogen adsorption, FESEM and EDS. The synthetic route used for obtaining the ZSM-5 zeolite with flower-like morphology is a simple strategy for preparing hierarchical ZSM-5 forms targeting enhanced diffusivity and accessibility of catalytically active sites.

AB - Alumina-based compounds have many technological applications and attract great attention even after decades of investigation, due to their good chemical, electrical, and mechanical properties. A mixture of several alumina modifications (α-, κ-, γ-Al2O3) doped with 1 wt% of Mn2O3 was used for this experiment. The powder was mechanically activated for 60 min in an ethanol medium. After compaction, green bodies were sintered in the temperature range from 1200 to 1400 °C. Microstructures of the obtained specimens were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The influence of morphological changes on electrical and mechanical properties was examined in detail. We have developed a test fixture and corresponding software for measurement of the relative dielectric permittivity and the loss tangent of ceramic specimens. This new method overcomes the problems of dimensions and shape of samples, as well as the problem of applying silver paste. The accuracy is around 2% for ε'r and 0.003 for tanδ. We demonstrate that the mechanical activation (MA) has the dominant influence on lowering the characteristic temperatures and microstructure development, which further leads to increased permittivity and tensile strength.

AB - Thermally activated processes in cordierite-based ceramics were investigated to determine the effect of the mechanical activation and the addition of TeO2 on kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of these processes. Using a combination of dilatometry and DTA measurements in the 100–1400 °C temperature range, it was established that both the mechanical activation and the addition of TeO2 have a significant effect on processes in cordierite-based ceramics. A combination of 5 mass% addition of TeO2 and mechanical activation for 40 min reduced the sintering temperature of cordierite ceramics to around 1100 °C. In addition, the analysis of DTA measurements of mechanically activated samples indicates that the mechanical activation leads to intensification of the cordierite formation through an increase in concentration of surface defects and an increase in grain contact surface in the initial powder.

AB - Magnesium aluminate and other alumina-based spinels are refractory ceramics with excellent properties, such as high hardness, high mechanical strength, and low dielectric constant, applicable in many modern industries. MgAl2O4 was produced by solid state reaction between MgO and alpha-Al2O3 powders. Mechanical activation represents a very efficient method for increasing the reactivity of powders, accelerating chemical reactions and decreasing the sintering temperatures. Mechanical activation of mixed powders was performed in a high-energy planetary ball mill in air for 60 minutes. Sintering was performed in air at temperatures ranging from 1200°C to 1600 °C with a 2 h dwell time. Initial powders and sintered samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermal gravimetry (TG) were used to determine the temperatures for synthesis reactions and phase transformations. Based on the DTA results, several different processes occured during heating, including evaporation of physisorbed water, decomposition of Mg(OH)2, and spinel formation. With mechanical activation, all characteristic temperatures shifted to lower values, and peaks were more pronounced. Raman spectra were used to characterize the degree of inversion as a function of sintering temperature for all of the sintered specimens.

AB - Corundum (alpha-alumina) is one of the most exploited materials in ceramic industry due to its good physico-chemical properties, mechanical properties, and, importantly, due to its low cost. Advantageous properties, such as hardness, dielectric and thermal properties, and refractoriness, open the door to a wide range of applications of corundum. Porous alumina ceramics is often used for filters and as a catalytic substrate, whereas dense alumina ceramics is frequently used in automotive and aerospace industry. Hence, there is a great interest in exploring this type of ceramics. The aim of this work is to explain the influence of preparation parameters (mechanical activation, addition of transition metal oxides, and sintering conditions) on the final electrical and mechanical properties of alumina.
As a starting powder, a mix of a few alumina modifications (α-, κ-,γ - Al2O3) was used. It was doped with 1 wt % of Mn2O3, Cr2O3, and NiO, respectively. Three of the obtained mixtures were homogenized and three were ball milled for 60 min. Particle size analysis, SEM, and EDS were performed in order to demonstrate changes in the microstructure after milling. DTA/TG analyses were used to determine all characteristic temperatures. After sintering at 1400 oC in an air atmosphere, mechanical, electrical, and physico-chemical properties of the obtained ceramics were determined.
Results showed that the mechanical treatment lead to a decrease in temperatures of phase transitions and sintering for approximately 100 oC. Incorporation of cations of transition metals into the crystal lattice of alumina was noticed. Activated and sintered samples showed a higher tensile strength and higher relative dielectric permittivity then the sample doped with Cr2O3.
The main conclusion of this investigation is that the mechanical activation has the dominant influence on lowering the characteristic temperatures of all detected phase transitions and sintering processes. Using a mixture of several crystalline phases of alumina as a starting powder alleviates the incorporation of transition-metal cations into the alumina crystal lattice, leading to changes in microstructures of the prepared ceramics. Finally, changes in the microstructure and lattice disordering have the dominant influence on the final mechanical properties.

AB - Single crystalline phase MgAl2O4 is made from the predetermined composition of MgO-Al2O3 powder mixture by using ball-milling. Mixtures of MgO and Al2O3 are treated in planetary ball mill for 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes, in air. The aim of this experiment was to examine phase composition, microstructure, and densification behavior of all sintered samples and to find out which sample has the best features for further use. After sintering in dilatometer at 1500 °C, XRD patterns and SEM images were recorded. The results show that mechanical activation is an efficient method to improve the densification behavior of MgAl2O4 sintered specimens. With the prolonged milling time, densities increased, reaching the maximum value of 2.8 g/cm3 for sample activated 120 minutes.

AB - Sintered alumina powder represents suitable material for usage in various industry fields (e.g., as chip carriers in electronics, microwaves, jewelry production), due to convenient physical properties, such as sinterability, electrical and mechanical features. Those properties can be modified by addition of different oxides and/or mechanical treatment. Therefore, in this investigation the alumina was doped with 1 wt. % of Cr2O3, Mn2O3 and NiO, respectively, followed by 1 hour of mechanical activation at 400 rpm in planetary ball mill. Sintering of powder mixtures was tracked by sensitive dilatometer up to 1400 °C. The final density values varied from cca. 2 ̶ 3.2 g/cm3. Changes in microstructure were observed by means of SEM. The influence of additives along with mechanical activation is monitored trough changes in electrical permittivity and loss tangent. Compared to pure alumina, the additives lower the relative permittivity and increase dielectric losses. For a given mixture, the sintering increases the relative permittivity and decreases losses.

AB - Recently, with the huge use of smart gadgets, developing of smart jewelry represents a very interesting segment in material science, as well as in electronic science. Alumina is widely used ceramic in many industrial fields as pigments, catalysis, microelectronics, etc., mostly because of its low cost and appropriate mechanical and electrical properties, high surface area and thermal stability. Also, modified alumina could be applied in production of smart jewelry. Thus, the main objectives of this investigation is to improve features of sintered alumina doped with Mn2O3 along with mechanical treatment, in order to obtain strong ceramic with low values of dielectric loss and low relative dielectric permittivity, as well as esthetic. Commercial alumina powder was doped with 1 wt % of manganese oxide and treated in planetary ball mill for an hour. Characteristic temperatures of both powders (non-activated and activated one) were investigated in detail by DTA and TG analyses. After sintering at 1200, 1300, and 1400 oC for 2 h, XRD patterns and SEM images were recorded. Furthermore, mechanical and electrical properties were examined for all sintered samples.

AB - During the compaction of the powder mixture of ZnO and Mn2O3 (MnCO3) and Fe2O3 compacts were find fragile for further handling. Poly vinyl alcohol PVA was used as a binder in an unusual 20% PVA content. We made as well 2% PVA with 0.6% Poly ethylene glycol PEG and 20% PVA with 6 % PEG. Binder was wrapped over the powder by suspension forming in the polymer water solution and drying afterwards until all water content evaporates. On the these obtained powders employed characterization techniques were: Fourier transformed Infra red FTIR spectra with ATR attenuated total reflection technique as well as differential thermal analysis DTA on the device with low temperature sensitivity and TEM transmition electron microscopy. All binder concentrations gave compacts with good mechanical properties, that can be handled with ease but with adding, a PEG as plasticizer the operating of the anvil and piston were extremely difficult due to friction.

AB - Commercial Mn-Zn powder (Mn0.63Zn0.37Fe2O4, 93 wt. % and Fe2O3 7 wt. %) was milled 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 hours in a planetary ball mill. Powders were characterized with XRD, SEM and particle seizer. Subsequent heating was monitored on TGA/DTA in air atmosphere. After compaction of the milled powders, sintering was also performed in a dilatometric device. Sintered specimens were characterized microstructurally with SEM on a fresh breakage. Ferrite powders changed with milling as well as with second run heating are characterised to approach the possible best ratio of the milling and heating that should be used to obtain desired micrstructure.

AB - In this study, highly porous macro- and micro-cellular wollastonite-based ceramics was synthesized. Ceramic precursor, methylhydrocyclosiloxane, together with micro-sized CaCO3, was used as starting material. After 20 min of ultrasound treatment, and calcination at 250 oC for 30 min, different pore-forming agents were added to the as-obtained powders. Differential thermal analysis was used to determine characteristic temperatures of processes occurring within powders during heating. Based on the obtained results, sintering regime was set up. Prepared mixtures were pressed into pallets and sintered at 900 oC. During the sintering regime, highly porous wollastonite-based ceramics was obtained. The phase composition of the sintered samples as well as microstructures was analyzed by the means of X-ray diffraction method and SEM. Two-phase system was detected in all samples, CaSiO3 wollastonite and Ca2SiO4 larnite, and their ratio varied with each pore-forming agent. It was observed that addition of different pore-forming agent resulted in significantly different microstructures.

AB - Cordierite 2MgO+2Al2O3+5SiO2 is frequently used ceramic material, that is commonly used as a carrier of electrical components due to its low dielectric constant (~ 5), and low temperature thermal expansion coefficient (20•10-7 ºC-1). In order to accelerate the process of sintering, 5.00 mass% TeO2 was added to the starting mixtures. System was tested in two parallel mixtures, one with no added additives, and the other one with TeO2. The mechanical activation of the both mixtures was performed in a high-energy ball mill in time intervals from 0 to 40 min with ball to powder mass ratio 1:40. The particle size analysis (PSA) was employed in order to determine the changes in the particle size of the mechanically treated powders. The phase composition of the starting powders as well as microstructures was analyzed by the means of X-ray diffraction method and SEM.

AB - Cordierite, 2MgO•2Ah03•5Si02 (MAS), is a very attractive high-temperature ceramic material. In order to accelerate the process of sintering, 5.00 mass% Mo03 was added to the starting mixtures. The mechanical activation of the starting mixtures was performed in a high energy ball mill in time intervals from 0 to 160 minutes. In following, starting mixtures were sintered at 1300 °C for 2h. In order to determine the changes in the particle size distribution, the mechanically treated powders were characterized by a laser light-scattering particle size analyzer. The phase composition of the starting mixtures and sintered samples was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction method. Differential thermal analyses (DTA) and thermo-gravimetric (TG) analysis were used in order to determine characteristic temperatures. Kissinger's equation was employed to calculate apparent activation energies of various processes that occur within the system while heating. Based on the obtained DTA results, it was established that mechanical activation along with MoO3 additive, has influence on sintering temperature which was decreased for about 150 °C.

AB - According to its low temperature thermal expansion coefficient, low dielectric constant, also good mechanical properties, cordierite, 2MgO×2Al2O3×5SiO2, represents a very attractive hightemperature ceramic material. In this study, cordierite was prepared by solid state reaction of the MgO, Al2O3 and SiO2 mixture. One of the components from the mixture, SiO2, was mechanically activated in a high energy ball mill during 5 and 10 minutes. The applied pressure before the sintering process was 2 t/cm2. Sintering process of mixtures containing non-activated and activated SiO2 powder was performed at 1350 oC for 4h in the air atmosphere. The phase composition of starting oxides and sintered samples was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction method. Particle size analysis was performed to investigate the differences between starting components. Scanning electron microscopy was done to analyze the microstructure of both components and sintered samples. This paper investigates the influence of one mechanically activated SiO2 component on the densities of green bodies as well as on the sintered samples, along with electrical properties of cordierite ceramics.

AB - Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 was prepared from the starting materials BaCO3, SrCO3 and TiO2 through solid state reaction. Mixtures of these oxides were mechanically activated using a high-energy ball mill at different time intervals from 0 to 120 minutes. X-ray diffraction was employed in order to determine the crystal structure and gave information about composition of phase variation. It was observed that after 40 minutes early synthesis of Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 phase occurred. Particle size distribution along with scanning electron microscopy gave very useful information about powder morphology.

In order to accelerate the process of sintering, 1 mass% Bi2O3 has been added to starting mixtures. Liquid phase sintering caused by presence of bismuth-oxide leads to lowering temperature of cordierite formation. Mechanical activation of starting mixtures (0-56 minutes in vibro-mill) additionally leads to lowering sintering temperatures. Process of sintering was performed at 1200, 1300 and 1400 oC, for 2h. BET and PSA were employed in order to follow the changes in specific surface area and particle size of mechanically treated powders. Phase composition of starting powders and sintered materials was analyzed by X-ray diffraction method. Moreover, SEM analysis was used for analysis of powders morphology and sintered pallets microstructure.
