AB - To determine the overall degree of variability and detect divergence among 12 clones of the sour cherry cultivar 'Montmorency', seven characteristics (flowering and fruiting phenology, as well as leaf morphology traits) were evaluated. Clones were selected from the commercial orchard of PKB "Vocarske plantaze" Bolec, Begaljica near Belgrade, Serbia. Agronomic evaluation of the clones revealed considerable diversity for almost all characters studied. In order to investigate breeding response and genetic relationships among the studied clones, and to help breeders to meet the selection objectives, phenotypic and genetic correlations were calculated among the presently evaluated characteristics and nine previously evaluated and published characteristics. Significant correlation coefficients were found between fruit dimensions and fruit weight, and between soluble solids and sugar content. A cluster analysis showed that the 'Montmorency' clones formed three distinct groups. The first cluster consisted of six clones (3, 6, 4, 11, 8 and 10), the second cluster included only two (9 and 14), while the third had four clones (5, 7, 12 and 13). Despite the significant differences among clones, number of fruits set and fruits harvested contributed to the separation of these clusters.

AB - Frost resistance has been tested in 14 interspecific hybrids already selected for table grape production. The experiment was carried out by artificial exposure to low temperature of cuttings. This test was repeated three times during winter: in the second half of December, in the middle of January, and in the second half of February. Resistance was scored by measuring the percentage of alive, partially frozen, and fully frozen buds. The hybrid 19574 derived from the cross SV 18-315 x 'Muscat Hamburg' showed the highest resistance. Most hybrids (11 out of 14) performed better that the control 'Muscat Hamburg'. In most hybrids, resistance level was the highest in mid winter.

AB - Variability and inheritance of important agronomic, biological, and technological characteristics of grapevine in two hybrid progeny obtained by direct and reciprocal crosses of cultivars 'Smederevka' and 'Red Traminer', were investigated in this study. F-1 seedlings from both cross combinations showed high level of variability for all examined properties. Coefficient of variation in both direct and reciprocal crosses showed the lowest value for sugar content in the must (5.9% and 6.4%, respectively) and the highest value for grape yield per hectare (63.2% and 63.7%, respectively). In both cross combination, for majority of characteristics, the same mode of inheritance was established, except for ripening time. From all examined characteristics, important influence of cytoplasm factors was determined only for inheritance of flowering time and ripening time.

AB - Suitability of 14 genotypes for generative rootstocks production was investigated in this paper. In examined genotypes number of germinated seeds, total number of seedlings, number of seedlings suitable for grafting and number of produced scions in relation to number of stratified seeds was determined. Seedlings from all vineyard peach genotypes were grafted with cv. Suncrest in order to examine vigour and Uniformity of scions. Considering total number of seeds, when rootstocks were genotypes I/6, II/1, XIX/23, XIX/28 and XIX/30, satisfied number of scions (over 40%) was obtained. Based on coefficient of variation, different degree of variability of investigated scion characteristics considering rootstocks were determined. Applied t-test showed that between all scion characteristics (height, diameter and brunch number) influenced by rootstocks, very significant differences are present.

AB - Eight pomological properties in 10 selected clones of 'Oblacinska' sour cherry (Prunus cerasus L.) on two rootstocks ('Oblacinska' shoot cuttings and P. mahaleb L. seedlings) were studied. The clones differed significantly in yield, fruit weight, stone weight, % flesh and invert sugars content but not in soluble solids content, total sugars or total acids. Clone D8 had the highest yield, but D4 had the largest fruit and stone weights. Rootstocks significantly influenced yield, fruit weight, stone weight and sugar content of fruit, with the best results on mahaleb.

AB - From different pollination combinations of cultivar Bagrina, seed germination, vitality and vigour of seedling, like theirs growth uniformity, were investigated in the beginning and at the end of vegetation. Cultivars Chardonnay, Smederevka and SV 12-375 were used as pollenizers, and besides controlled pollination, open pollination of cultivar Bagrina was examined, as well. From all 4 crossing combinations, seeds had relatively low germination (3.8%-12.4%), while seedlings vitality was high (84.5%-91.7%). In dependence of pollenizer, differences in vigour and uniformity of properties in obtained seedlings, were established. In crossing combinations Bagrina x Smederevka and Bagrina x Chardonnay existed very significant correlation between plant height at the beginning and at the end of vegetation, as well as between internode length at the beginning and at the end of vegetation, while it was not the case in other two combinations (Bagrina x SV 12-375 and Bagrina x Open pollination).

AB - Pollenizer influence (Chardonnay, Smederevka and SV 12-375) on berry weight, seeds number per berry and seed weight in cultivar Bargina was investigated in this paper. Besides controlled pollination, open pollination of cultivar Bagrina was examined as well. For all investigated properties very significant differences in dependence of pollination combination were established. The best pollenizer for cultivar Bagrina, in this research, was cultivar SV 12-375.

AB - To create seedless cultivar with colored juice, with high yield and high fruit quality, the crossing between Evita and Beogradska Besemena cultivars has been done. In the obtained progeny, in addition to the selection of seedlings with expected characteristics recombination, the mode of inheritance has been followed as well. Monogenic inheritance has been determined for the berry skin color and juice color. Exception to monogenic inheritance has been determined for seedlessness. For the grape yield and bunch weight, the dominance of parent with low grape yield and low bunch weight (cv. Evita) have been determined, while for the berry weight the partial dominance of parent with low berry weight (cv. Evita) have been determined. In regard to sugar content of must, positive heterosis has been exhibited. The expected complete recombination of desirable characteristics (seedlessness, colored juice, high yield and high fruit quality) was not shown in any seedling of F1 generation.

AB - By diallelic reciprocal crossings and open pollination of sour cherry cultivars 'Meteor', 'Oblacinska' and 'Heimanns Konserven', pollination effect (based on fruit set and fruit harvested) and fruit quality (based on fruit weight and stone weight) was established. In all crossings, on average, 'Meteor' as a female parent, had the highest fruit set, but as a pollinator it gave the lowest fruit set. Opposite results were obtained in 'Heimanns Konserven'. 'Meteor' that had the highest average fruit weight, caused the highest average fruit weight in the other three cultivars when used as a pollinator. 'Oblacinska', that had the lowest average fruit weight, caused the lowest average fruit weight in the other three cultivars when used as a pollinator. The cultivar used as a pollinator significantly influenced variability of the properties examined. This showed that selection of an adequate pollinator could cause better cropping and fruit quality in sour cherry cultivars. The existence of very significant differences caused by interaction of cultivar used as a female parent and as a pollinator showed the need for finding the best pollinator for each sour cherry cultivar.

AB - From the progeny obtained by open-pollination of J. H. Hale cultivar, five midle late or late ripening hybrids were selected. During 1995 and 1996 important pomological properties of those hybrids were examined. Based on results of discriminant analysis, in the case when yield was taken as the most important character, the following order of hybrids was obtained: AO 21; AO 3; AO 10; AO 14; AO 6. When fruit weight was taken as the most important character, the following order of hybrids was obtained: AO 14; AO 6; AO 10; AO 21; AO 3, and when total sugar content was taken as the most important property, hybrids were classified as follow: AO 21; AO 3; AO 10; AO 6; AO 14.

AB - Investigations were carried out on 63 cherry plum genotypes collected from different autochthonous populations in Serbia. Morphological and biochemical variability of these genotypes was analyzed by multivariate analysis (cluster analysis and discriminant linear analysis). Cluster analysis showed clear differences between cherry plum genotypes and four distinct clusters were identified. Discriminant linear analysis used ripening time to create timed preliminary groups. Most genotypes of the first (82%) and the third (71%) group from the results of discriminant analysis were correctly classified but fewer of the second group (45%). Four fruit characters, ripening time, length, stone weight and total acid content, are sufficient to explain the diversity between the starting groups and to provide a good classification. Multivariate analysis is a useful system for germplasm evaluation in cherry plum allowing a detail characterization of seedlings in terms of adaptation and productivity. The presence of diversity within the germplasm collection is of great interest in providing valuable materials for breeding aimed at cherry plum improvement for different environments.

AB - During 1995 and 1996, functional ability of pollen and fruit set were examined in six sour cherry cultivars (Meteor, Rexelle, Heimanns konserven, Kelleris 14, Oblacinska sour cherry and Köröser). In both years of investigation the highest pollen germination (70.3% and 50.7%) was observed in Oblacinska sour cherry cultivar, and the lowest was in Kelleris 14 cultivar (7.7% and 8.6%). Rexelle cultivar had the highest number of fruit set (51.0%) in 1995, and Oblacinska sour cherry cultivar (42.3%) in 1996. In both years of examination the lowest number of fruit set was found in Köröser cultivar (9.8% and 7.1%). Cultivars which had higher degree of pollen germination had higher degree of fruit set, except for Kelleris 14 cultivar.

AB - Three autochthonous populations of wild sweet cherry (P. avium L.) have been collected from Southwest Serbia. Biochemical and morphological variability in these populations were analyzed. Observed zymograms for five enzyme systems did not show patterns different from sweet cherry cultivars already analyzed. The discrimination effect of eight characters was examined with multivariate analysis. The results of classification obtained according to the linear discriminant functions express a very slight difference between the real and evaluated groups. For effective discrimination, these eight characters can be reduced to only five with more than 90% reliability. These five characters are: fruit maturity, juice colour, tree habit, yield and seed germination.
