AB  - Magnesium, a naturally occurring mineral, is very important for the normal functioning of the body. However, certain situations such as poor diet, alcoholism, poorly controlled diabetes, etc., cause body to lose magnesium faster than it can be replace it from diet. Magnesium also plays a role in body's detoxification processes and therefore is important for preventing damage from environmental chemicals, heavy metals and other toxins. Polyesters like polylactide (PLA), polyglycolide (PGA) or poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) are used for the controlled delivery of several classes of medicaments like anticancer agents, immunomodulatory drugs, hormones, vitamins, antibodies, etc. Magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgO) have been synthesized by chemical reduction method and additionally encapsulated within spherical polyester poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) particles (PLGA/MgO). Synthesized particles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

AB  - Drug delivery systems of nano- and micro-size represent a new generation of therapeutics that hold promise to become excellent tool in treatment of various diseases and disorders, which are resistant to currently available drugs. This study was performed in order to develop the selenium nanoparticles coated with poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), as a potential anticancer agent. Selenium nanoparticles (SeNp) were first synthesized by chemical reduction of sodium selenite, using ascorbic acid as reductant and bovine serum albumin as stabilizer. Obtained SeNPs, with average diameter of ~80 nm, were then incorporated within PCL applying emulsification and freeze drying methods. The final microparticles of PCL/SeNp were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Efficiency of encapsulation of SeNp within PCL particles was determined with inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) analyses.

AB  - Poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) particles were prepared by physicochemical method with solvent/non-solvent systems. The synthetic polymer polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and natural polymer poly(alpha,gamma,L-glutamic acid) (PGA), were used as stabilizers and their influence on size and morphology of the particles was examined. The results were compared with those obtained without the use of stabilizers. This study evaluated, for the first time, PGA as stabilizer of PCL particles and demonstrated that PGA is more efficient stabilizer of PCL particles than most commonly used PVP. The particles obtained by using PGA as stabilizer were spherical, with smooth surfaces and dimensions below 1 mu m. The drying conditions were also varied in order to examine their influence on the formation of PCL particles. The samples were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, particle size distribution (DLS) and zeta potential measurements.

AB  - A common limitation of using polymeric micro and nanoparticles in long-term conservation is due to their poor physical and chemical stability. Freeze-drying is one of the most convenient methods that enable further reconstitution of micro and nanoparticles for therapeutical use. Nevertheless, this process generates various stresses during freezing and desiccation steps. The aim of this study was to evaluate different cryoprotectants (protective excipients that are usually added to increase stability upon storage and protect the particles from freezing stress): sugars (glucose and sucrose) and polymers (PVA and PGA), on the outcome of freeze-dried poly(ε-caprolactone) micro and nanospheres. The best freeze-drying results in terms of morphological characteristics, analyzed with SEM, were achieved with glucose at concentration of 1%. The FTIR analysis confirmed that the molecular structure of PCL particles remained the same after the addition cryoprotectants.

AB  - Poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) is a semicrystalline, biodegradable and biocompatible polymer. Its advantages, as high permeability to small drug molecules, failure to generate an acidic environment during degradation (as compared to polylactides and polyglycolides) and a slow degradation rate, make this aliphatic polyester suitable for extended long-term delivery over a period of more than one year. In this study PCL particles were prepared by physicochemical method with solvent/nonsolvent systems. The synthetic polymer polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and natural polymer poly (α, γ, L-glutamic acid) (PGA), were used as stabilizers and their influence on size and morphology of the particles was examined. The results were compared with those obtained without the use of stabilizers. Characterization of obtained particles was performed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The morphology and size distribution were determined using SEM and particle analyzer.
