AB - The bean weevil (Acanthoscelides obtectus, Say) is a serious pest of stored bean seeds. Bean weevil control relies heavily on the use of synthetic insecticides. In the search for a sustainable alternative, the residual contact toxicity and anti-oviposition activity of thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.), rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) and basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) essential oils as well as their dominant components (thymol, alpha-pinene, 1,8-cineole and linalool) were tested against A. obtectus adults. Out of the seven tested botanicals, T. vulgaris oil, thymol and linalool exhibited the highest toxic potential (>90% mortality). Females were less susceptible than males. The insecticidal activity of these botanicals was much greater when they were applied on glass compared to direct application to the bean. All tested botanicals reduced oviposition by bean weevil females. T. vulgaris oil, thymol and a-pinene also deterred bean weevil oviposition, as revealed by a two-choice test. Our research shows that T. vulgaris oil and thymol are promising and sustainable alternatives to synthetic pesticides for protecting stored beans against the bean weevil.

AB - The four-replicate trial with a local variety Domaci oranz (Local orange) was set up according to the randomised complete-block design in four locations (Gorobilje, Arilje, Pancevo and Kacarevo) and two variants of fertilizing (200 kg ha(-1) KAN with 27 % of nitrogen and 400 kg ha(-1) NPK 15:15:15) and the control without fertilizing. According to the three factorial analysis of variance for all observed traits it was determined that there were very significant differences within growing locations and fertilizing variants and their interaction (L x F). The highest seed yield (672.84 kg ha(-1)) was detected in the variant with 400 kg NPK ha(-1). The significantly lower seed yield (579.84 kg ha(-1)) was obtained in the variant with KAN at the rate of 200 kg ha(-1) and the control variant (344.88 kg ha(-1)). The highest total seed germination of 91.84% and the 1000-seed weight (6.83 g) were obtained in the variant with 400 kg NPK ha(-1). Total seed germination (85.87) and the 1000-seed weight (5.82 g) obtained in the control were significantly higher than total seed germination (83.31%) and the 1000-seed weight (5.42 g) obtained in the variant with 200 kg ha(-1) KAN.

AB - Ethanol solutions of essential oils obtained from Athmanta haynaldii and Myristica fragrans were tested for their toxicity and antifeedant activity against the second instar gypsy moth larvae in the laboratory bioassay. Both isolated oils were subjected to gas chromatography analysis in order to determine their chemical constitutions. Tested oils showed low to moderate larvicidal effect in both residual toxicity test and in chronic larval mortality bioassay. However, antifeedant index achieved by application of tested solutions in feeding choice assay was significantly higher in comparison to control, and almost same as one provided with botanical standard. Low toxic and high antifeedant properties (AF index 85-90%) make these essential oils suitable for integrated pest management programs. Special attention should be paid to further investigation of endemic and rare A. haynalidii in the terms its cultivation and usage of its unique set of biologically active compounds.

AB - Eight maize inbred lines of different cycles of selection, originating from synthetic populations BSSS and BSCB1, were observed in the present study. The aim of the study was to evaluate inbreds and to determine which ones have the greatest relative values of favourable alleles for the improvement of the kernel row number in the elite single cross maize hybrid. Based on the estimated estimators: mu G, UBND, PTC and NI, it was determined that the greatest number of favourable dominant alleles for the improvement of the kernel row number was detected in the inbred lines B73(C-5) and B84(C-7) originating from the synthetic population BSSS and in the inbreds B91(C-8) and B90(C-7) originating from the synthetic population BSCB1. These inbreds are of the later cycles of recurrent selection and have proven to be better donors of favourable alleles than inbreds of earlier cycles of selection. The rank correlations among used estimators were positive and highly significant, while the highest values of correlations for the kernel row number were determined between mu G and PTC, mu G and UBND and PTC and NI. The greatest kernel row number was determined in the hybrid B73(C-5) x B84(C-7).

AB - Efficacy of maize breeding program based on maize grain and choice of breeding method depend on effects of genes included in expression of this trait. The objective of this study was to determine genetic parameters for grain yield using generation mean analysis (GMA) in two maize single-cross hybrids with one parent in common. Dominance gene effects were the most important in the inheritance of the grain yield. Significant values of two-gene epistasis were obtained. Interaction between dominant genes was in most instances of duplicate type, and was associated to a smaller effect of dominant genes. Less importance was estimated for epistatic effects between additive genes and additive and dominant genes which varied a large degree depending on the hybrid under consideration and on the environment. Higher values obtained for the interaction with the environment of the dominant in comparison to additive genes showed that it is not possible to predict with greater confidence the performances of the grain yield in both hybrids, so that successful estimation of the value of each inbred line can be derived only based on its performance in the particular hybrid combination.

AB - Ethanol solutions of essential oil of Ocimum basilicum and its main component, linalool (both isomer forms), all in three concentrations, as well as botanical standard Bioneem (0.5%), were tested for their toxicity and antifeedant activity against the second instar gypsy moth larvae in the laboratory bioassay. The essential oil of O. basilicum was subjected to gas chromatography analysis, and totally 37 compounds were detected, of which linalool was predominantly present. All tested solutions showed low to moderate larvicidal effect in both residual toxicity test and in chronic larval mortality bioassay. Chronic mortality tests showed that obtained mortality was a consequence of starving rather than ingestion of treated leaves. However, antifeedant index achieved by application of tested solutions in feeding choice assay was remarkable. Foliar application of all tested compounds deterred feeding by L2 in the same percent as Bioneem. Antifeedant index was relatively high at all tested treatments (85-94%); moreover, the larval desensitization to repelling volatiles has not occurred after five days of observation. Low toxic and high antifeedant properties make these plant-derived compounds suitable for incorporation in integrated pest management programs, especially in urban environments.

AB - A great variability and diversity of sage (Salvia officinalis L.) determine its utility use. Due to its complex chemical composition, sage can be used as a medicinal, scent, melliferous, spice plant and as a natural antioxidant. A cultivated sage population, originating from an autochthonous material from natural habitats, was used as a breeding material. Studies encompassed 60 clones selected from an initial population, while the best 12 were presented in this paper. The trials were carried out in 2005 and 2006. Means, variance, coefficient of variation and selection gain for plant height (cm), herb yield (g), leaf yield (g) and essential oil content (%) were analyzed. The selection gain was evaluated at the selection intensity of 5 and 10%. Clones 20, 22 and 28 out of 60 clones had significantly higher means for observed traits. High values of variance and coefficients of variations for herb and leaf yields point out to the existence of variability, which is an essential condition for the beginning of selection. The application of direct selection with the use of vegetative multiplication resulted in a high selection gain for herb and leaf yields and in a low gain for the essential oil content. The selection gain was greater at the selection intensity of 5% than of 10%. It can be stated that herb and leaf yields can have a greater effect on essential oil yield per area unit than its percentage participation. The selection gain varied over years and traits.

AB - The investigation included mean values, coefficient variability and correlation coefficient of sage. On the basis of the results obtained, it was concluded that mean values of traits of sage were more during 2004. Performed investigations show high variability of chemical properties of sage. The variation range, i.e. large maximum and minimum limits, detected for: yield of dry herb, α-pipene, β-pipene, camphene and manool, could be of a practical importance in sage breeding and selection. Besides, a significant effect of year on the expression of yield of dry herb and β-pipene was observed. Prevalence of the negative and weak correlation aggravates selection of more qualitative genotypes of this medical plant. The analysis of correlation coefficient show that yield of dry herb and essential oil was positively and very significantly correlated (0.88**). Furthermore, high significant interrelation was detected between yield of dry herb and several components of essential oil. Interrelation between essential oil and its components was not significant and sometime positively and negatively. A very significant and negative correlation was determined between yield of dry herb and viridiflorol. Moreover, highly significant and negative correlation was detected between viridiflorol, on one hand, and camphene and α-pipene, on the other hand. .
Biometrijska analza pored srednjih vrednosti obuhvatila je i minimalne i maksimalne vrednosti, standardne greške, koeficijente varijacija, analizu varijanse i fenotipske koeficijente korelacija. .

AB - In this paper results of two year research regarding the yield and quality of white mustard seed obtained from three types are presented.
