AB - A field experiment was conducted in order to estimate the influence of different arrangement patterns of maize plants (Zea mays L.) in combination with low rates of herbicides on weed infestation and on production parameters of the crop. The maize was sown at 70-, 50-, and 35-cm row space with the same crop density. The weed biomass declined with smaller row spaces and was, on average, the lowest with the 35-cm row space; even though the arrangement patterns of the maize plants had no significant effect on the average values of the weed biomass. The interaction of the arrangement pattern and the herbicide rate significantly influenced weed biomass. Maize grain yield expressed the greatest variation under the effects of applied factors, but did not differ significantly between treatments with the full and the half rate of herbicides. The results indicate that it is possible to control weed infestation level if maize is grown with increased spatial uniformity and combined application of other practices such are herbicides. In such a way, maize plants are more competitive against weeds and even lower amounts of herbicides could be applied in order to achieve high yields.

AB - The anatomy of stems and leaves of two populations of the weed species Amaranthus retroflexus L. (red-root amaranth) (pop. AMARE1 having green stems covered in sparse hairs and pop. AMARE2 with green but notably dense stem hairs) was analysed in order better to understand the uptake and translocation of herbicides that could be indicative of the species' evolving resistance to herbicides. Samples of the two populations (AMARE1 and AMARE2) were collected from arable land of the Institute of Maize Research at Zemun Polje in 2006. Sampling was performed at the stage of full vegetative growth of plants. Permanent microscoping preparations were made to measure and analyze elements of the anatomy of stems (stem epidermis, cortex, collenchyma, central cylinder and diameter) and leaves (leaf epidermis upper surface and underside, mesophyll, leaf thickness and bundle sheath thickness). Both analysed populations of A. retroflexus, morphologically characterized by different density of stem hairiness, were found to have a typical structure of herbaceous dicots. The stem had three distinctive zones: epidermis, cortex and central cylinder. Amaranth leaves have dorsoventral structure, i.e. their upper surface and underside can be differentiated. The results indicated high and very high significance of differences found in stem anatomy between the two analysed populations, while leaf anatomy was not found to display significant differences other than in mesophyll thickness.

AB - The paper reviews the distribution and frequency of several species from a group of economically harmful, invasive and quarantine weeds (Galium aparine, Helianthus tuberosus, Iva xanthifolia, Lactuca serriola, Orobanche cumana, Sonchus arvensis, Sorghum halepense and Xanthium strumarium) on the territory of Serbia, using a 10x10 km UTM map. The assessment included all categories of land, fields under small grains, row crops, perennial forage crops, long-term plantations, fallow land and non-agricultural land. The presence of quarantine weeds was rated on the scale from 1 to 4 (1 - the species occurs individually, taking lass than 5% of the area; 2 - the species takes 5 to 25% of the area; 3 - the species is frequent and it takes 25 to 50% of the area; 4 - the species is more numerous than the crop and it takes more than 50% of the area).
AB - U radu je prikazana distribucija i zastupljenost nekih ekonomski štetnih, invazivnih i karantinskih korovskih vrsta (Galium aparine, Helianthus tuberosus, Iva xanthifolia, Lactuca serriola, Orobanche cumana, Sonchus arvensis, Sorghum halepense i Xanthium strumarium), na području Srbije, na UTM mapi, razmera 10x10 km. Snimanjima su obuhvaćene sve kategorije obradivih površina: strna žita, okopavine, višegodišnje krmne biljke, višegodišnji zasadi, strništa i nepoljoprivredne površine. Ocena zastupljenosti kartiranih vrsta rađena je po skali 1-4 (1 - vrsta se sreće pojedinačno i zauzima do 5% površine; 2 - sreće se i zauzima 5-25% površine; 3 - sreće se često i zauzima 25-50% površine; 4 - vrsta preovladava nad gajenom biljkom i zauzima preko 50% površine).

AB - This paper reviews the distribution and frequency of several species from a group of economically harmful, invasive and quarantine weeds (Cannabis sativa, Chenopodium album, Ch. hybridum, Cirsium arvense, Convolvulus arvensis, Cuscuta campestris, Cynodon dactylon, Datura stramonium and Erigreon canadensis) on the territory of Serbia, using a 10x10 km UTM map. The assessment included all categories of land, fields under small grains, row crops, perennial forage crops, long-term plantations, fallow land and non-agricultural land.
AB - U radu je prikazana distribucija i zastupljenost nekih ekonomski štetnih, invazivnih i karantinskih korovskih vrsta (Cannabis sativa, Chenopodium album, Ch. hybridum, Cirsium arvense, Convolvulus arvensis, Cuscuta campestris, Cynodon dactylon, Datura stramonium i Erigreon canadensis), na području Srbije, na UTM mapi, razmera 10x10 km. Snimanjima su obuhvaćene sve kategorije obradivih površina: strna žita, okopavine, višegodišnje krmne biljke, višegodišnji zasadi, strništa i nepoljoprivredne površine. Ocena zastupljenosti kartiranih vrsta rađena je po skali 1-4 (1 - vrsta se sreće pojedinačno i zauzima do 5% površine; 2 - sreće se i zauzima 5-25% površine; 3 - sreće se često i zauzima 25-50% površine; 4 - vrsta preovladava nad gajenom biljkom i zauzima preko 50% površine).

AB - The intensity of crop competition is mostly defined by population density and spatial arrangement of plants. The effect of plant arrangement pattern of maize, in combination with the application of different herbicide rates, on weediness and maize yields were studied at the Maize Research Institute, Zemun Polje, during 2004 and 2005. Different plant arrangement patterns were designed by combining three inter-row distances (70, 50 and 35 cm) as well as by plant spacing at uniform population density. Subvariants included the application of isoxaflutole + acetochlor herbicides after sowing but prior to maize emergence at three rates: recommended, half of the recommended rate and without herbicide treatment. The number of plants per species, fresh weight of weeds, biomass and grain yield of maize were analysed. Although there were no statistical significances, the number of plants per species and fresh weight of weeds declined with the decrease in inter-row distance and, on the average, their values were the lowest in the 35-cm variant in both years 2004 and 2005 (78.52 plants m-2 and 388.65 g m-2 vs. 105.78 plants m-2 and 191.54 g m-2, respectively). The different rates of herbicide application significantly affected weediness by reducing it in both years of investigation. Maize grain yield did not vary over treatments with the recommended and half the recommended rate at the different inter-row distances and on the average.
Podvarijante su dobijene primenom herbicida isoxaflutole+acetohlor, posle setve a pre nicanja kukuruza u tri količine: preporučenoj, polovini peporučene količine i bez herbicda.

AB - In 2002, a johnsongrass population survived the application of ALS inhibiting herbicides in the locality of Zemun Polje, Serbia and Montenegro. This locality is known to have been treated with ALS inhibitors for years which may be considered the main cause of selection for herbicide resistance (R). The indices of resistance (IR=1.00 to IR=1.14) of the analyzed morphometric parameters show that no significant difference in susceptibility to nicosulfuron was found between the R and susceptible (S) populations. However, when a more sensitive method of monitoring ALS activity in vivo was employed, the index of resistance (IR=15.95) obtained by comparing enzyme inhibition in the two populations showed that nicosulfuron inhibited the enzyme in the S population of johnsongrass >15 times more than in the R population.

AB - The influence of the growing population density of jimsonweed on maize productivity was studied in the experimental field of the Maize Research Institute, Zemun Polje on the chernozem type of soil in 2000 and 2002. The additive experiment was applied as a broadly used design for crop-weed interactions studies. The infestation was artificially created and the density of weed ranged from 0, 1, 3, 6 and 10 plant m(-1) in rows and between maize rows. The increase of the growing population density of jimsonweed decreased significantly plant height, dry biomass per plant and grain yield of maize. The weed density had a more significantly affect on the plant height and dry biomass per plant of maize than plant arrangement of weeds. The highest decrease of maize productivity was in variant jimsonweed in rows with 10 plant m-1. Yield was significantly affected by the weed position in both seasons and the decrease was more significant in variants with weed in rows of maize. The greatest observed yield loss (74%) was obtained in the variant of 10 plants m-1 of weed in row of maize in 2002. Average values of yield losses in all variants (11-57%) were over than 5%, which is considered the a weed threshold for maize. A lower yield loss than the weed threshold was recorded on two variants with jimsonweed between rows (6 and 1 plant m-1) in hot and dry 2000.

AB - Weediness are the permanent problem in the maize production and the herbicide application is a usual way for their control. After many years of such a technology, it is obvious that herbicide weed control in maize fields is insuficient and ecologically not safe. The increase of maize growing densities decrease a significantly a fresh weight, especially at summer whem maize stand is completed. According to the correlation analysis, the weed fresh weight was reduced by 374,8 g*m2 over the maize crop density increases.

According to the correlation analysis, the weed fresh weight was reduced by 374,8 g*m2 over the maize crop density increases.",

AB - The composition of weed flora of a certain habitat changes with climatic changes, soil type, altitude and its susceptible to seasonal fluctuations was given. Mapping of weeds belonging to a particular region provides an exact insight into the spatial distribution of certain weed species. Determining the distribution and distribution intensity of dominant weed species with respect to various regions would offer the opportunity to establish the incidence of new, invasive, resistant and especially economically important weeds. In this way, both the formation of quarantine regions and application of control measures would be much easier. Mapping is the most safe way to select and organize control measures.

AB - Effects of crop density and herbicide application on distribution of weed species within maize weed community in the location of Zemun Polje were studied. During the maize growing season in 1996 and 1997, floristic composition and structure of weed community were surveyed. Furthermore, number of species, number of plants per species and fresh weight of all weeds per area unit over all densities in both, treated and nontreated variants, were also determined. Changes, occurring under effects of higher maize crop densities and herbicide application, were analyzed on the basis of distributed weed species and their plants per species. Moreover, relative distribution of certain weed groups was determined. Significant effects of crop density x herbicide application interaction were observed in reduction of relative distribution of certain broad leafed and perennial weeds within total maize weediness at Zemun Polje.

AB - A joint effect of four cropping practices (irrigation, crop density, hybrid and herbicide application) on maize weed infestation, expressed by fresh mass of weeds (g m-2), was monitored in a four year period (1996-1999). Fresh mass of weeds was higher on the average for all years in the area under irrigation than in the area under rainfed conditions and it statistically significantly decreased under increased crop densities. Fresh mass of weeds was significantly higher in the control than in the herbicide treated variant. The increased crop density and herbicide application interaction affected fresh mass of weeds in such a way that it was the lowest in the highest density in the treated variant almost in each year of investigation. In addition, fresh mass of weeds was affected by the herbicide application and maize hybrid interaction.

AB - The environment, available resources, agroecological conditions and measures taken with the aim to suppress weeds are factors that define the level of the crop weediness and thereby damages caused to the cultivated crop. Annual broad leaved species, such as thorn apple (Datura stramonium L.), common amaranth (Amaranthus retroflexus (L.) Mill.) and black nightshade (Solarium nigrum L.) cause problems in maize crops. These summer species are great consumers of water, mineral and organic matters and light, on the one hand, and occupy a large environmental area, on the other hand. They are characterised by a great vegetative and generative production. All the stated makes these species excellent competitors within broad planted crops such as maize. The productive performance of thorn apple, common amaranth and black nightshade were observed under conditions of the application of soil (mesotrione, dimetenamide, flurochloridon) and foliar herbicides (atrazine, nikosulphuron, 2,4-D-2ETH) with the aim to obtain a relevant insight into their competitive ratio within the maize crop under the Zemun Polje agroecological conditions.

AB - This paper presents results obtained in weed mapping. Results presented in the international literature are surveyed and compared with results gained in weed mapping in our country. As weed mapping implies permanent data collecting and analyzing, it results in an accurate perception of the spatial distribution of certain weed species within a particular region. An occurrence of new - invasive, resistant and especially economically important weeds can be established by confirmation of the distribution and infestation intensity of dominant weed species in different regions. In such a way, quarantine regions would be formed more easily. Furthermore, weed control would be also easier. Changes caused by various agricultural practices would be timely determined by monitoring weed flora of a particular region. Therefore, mapping is the safest base for selection and organization of control measures. Weed flora mapping within the integrated weed management provides possibilities of planned weed control with the reduced herbicide application.

AB - Effects of crop density and herbicide treatment on the distribution of weed species in a weed community in maize at the location of Zemun Polje were investigated. During the maize growing seasons in 1996 and 1997, floristic composition and structure of weed community were surveyed. Furthermore, the number of species, number of plants per species and fresh weight of all weeds per area unit over all densities in both treated and untreated variants were also determined. Changes, occurring under effects of higher maize crop densities and herbicide application, were analysed on the basis of distributed weed species and their plants per species. Moreover, relative distribution of certain weed groups was determined. Significant effects of crop density x herbicide application interaction were observed in reducing the relative distribution of certain broad-leaved and perennial weeds in the total maize weediness at Zemun Polje.
