AB - A pumpkin (Cucurbita maxima) contains significant amounts of diverse phytochemicals, including polyphenols (flavonoids, tannins) and carotenoids. Some of these compounds are known antioxidants, capable of neutralizing harmful biological free radicals, thus protecting health of living organisms. However, the numerous food-processing technologies decrease the amounts of naturally occurring antioxidants, due to enzymatic and nonenzymatic oxidation processes. The aim of this research was to determine the influence of different heat treatments (cooking, baking in conventional and microwave oven) on the antioxidant activity of phytochemicals present in the pumpkin.
The antioxidant activity was quantified spectrophotometrically, at the specific wavelengths, utilizing standard colorimetric reactions. The total antioxidant capacity of the analyzed samples was determined by phosphomolybdate method using ascorbic acid as a standard [1]. Antioxidant activity was measured by the inhibition of lipid peroxidation (FTC) [2] and free radical scavenging (DPPH⦁ [3], hydroxyl [4] and ABTS radical cation [5]) methods.
The highest total antioxidant capacity was found in a raw pumpkin sample (5.58±0.33 mg AAE/g), while the lowest value was found in a sample of pumpkin baked in conventional oven (2.88±0.32 mg AAE/g). Inhibition activity against lipid peroxidation (IC50) was the highest in raw pumpkin (16.72±0.73 µg/ml), and the lowest one was in conventional baked pumpkin (8.49±0.31 µg/ml). Free radical scavenging activity measured by DPPH and hydroxyl radicals (IC50) were the highest in raw sample (35.67±1.99 µg/ml) and (19.46±1.60 µg/ml), respectively, while the lowest values were in conventional baked pumpkin (15.68±1.32 µg/ml) and (9.69±2.01 µg/ml), respectively. Antioxidant activity measured by ABTS radical cation scavenging (IC50) was the highest in raw sample (41.63±0.61 µg/ml) and the lowest value was found in a sample baked in conventional oven (21.32±0.45 µg/ml).
The results showed that different heat treatments significantly affected on antioxidant activity, especially baking in conventional way, what makes it the least favorable process in this study.

AB - Pumpkin contains a high content of carotenoids, the majority of which are alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, alpha-cryptoxanthin, lutein/zeaxanthin and violaxanthin. The main beneficial effect of carotenoids derives from their antioxidant activity, i.e. protecting cells against the harmful effects of free radicals. The aim of this study was to determine the content of total pumpkin carotenoids during cooking, baking in oven and a microwave oven to examine how different heat treatments affect on the stability of the carotenoids. The standard spectrophotometric method was used to determine the content of total carotenoids, measuring the absorbance of extracted samples at a wavelength of 445 nm. Samples were extracted by petrolether. According to the obtained results, the highest content of carotenoids was in fresh pumpkin (172,93 μg/g dry matter), then in a pumpkin baked in the oven (66,63 μg/g dry matter), then in a pumpkin baked in microwave oven (65,97 μg/g dry matter) and the lowest content of total carotenoids was determined in cooked pumpkin (54,42 μg/g dry matter). These results indicated that different heat treatments were significantly affected on the stability of carotenoids in pumpkin. The higher losses were during cooking, while the losses of baking in the oven and microwave oven were similar.

AB - The solvent influence on absorption spectra of food azo dyes was examined by the method of Linear Solvation Energy Relationships (LSER). For this purpose, six azo dyes were used: tartrazine (E 102), ponceau 4R (E 124), azorubin (E 122), brilliant black (E 151), amaranth (E 123) and gelb orange S (E 110). Absorption spectra of dissolved azo dye have been recorded in the wavelength range of visible radiation, or from 380 to 760 nm, in eight solvent of different polarity. The choice of the solvent was limited due to the high polarity of the azo dye molecules themselves. The effect of solvent dipolarity/polarizability and solvent/solute hydrogen bonding interaction are analysed by means of the linear solvation energy relationship (LSER) concept proposed by Kamlet and Taft. The linear correlation of the absorption maxima with parameters of Kamlet-Taft solvatochrome equation yielded satisfactory results.
AB - Uticaj polarnosti rastvarača na apsorpcione spektre prehrambenih azo boja ispitivan je metodom linearne korelacije energije solvatacije (LSER). U ovu svrhu korišćeno je šest prehrambenih azo boja i to: tartrazin (E 102), ponceau 4R (E 124), azorubin (E 122), brilijant crna (E 151), amarant (E 123) i gelb oranž S (E 110). Spektre ispitivanih azo boja karakteriše jedan apsorpcioni maksimum. Efekat polarnosti rastvarača i efakat vodoničnog vezivanja rastvarač-rastvorena supstanca ispitivan je primenom KamletTaftove solvatohromne jednačine. Linearna korelacija apsorbcionih maksimuma sa parametrima Kamlet-Taftove solvatohromne jednačine dala je zadovoljavajuće rezultate.

AB - Production of copper powders by the potentiostatic electrolysis under different hydrogen evolution conditions was investigated. Copper powders were characterized by the scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), particle size distribution (PSD), and by the determination of the specific surface area (SSA) of the formed powders. Depending on quantity of hydrogen generated during electrolysis, the two types of particles were formed: dendrites and cauliflower-like particles. The dendrites were formed without, while cauliflower-like particles with the quantity of evolved hydrogen enough to achieve strong effect on hydrodynamic conditions in the near-electrode layer. Although macro structure of the particles was very different, they showed similar micro structure. Namely, both types of the particles consisted of small agglomerates of approximately spherical Cu grains at the micro level. The existence of the spherical morphology was just responsible for random orientation of Cu crystallites in both types of particles. The SSA of cauliflower-like particles was more than two times larger than that of the dendrites, while their size was considerably smaller than that of the dendritic particles. In this way, the useful benefit of Cu powder formation in the conditions of vigorous hydrogen evolution is shown.

AB - Silver dendritic nanonstructures obtained by the potentiostatic electrolysis from different electrolytes at different overpotentials were characterized by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique and X-ray diffraction analysis of the produced particles. The needle-like and fern-like dendrites were formed from the nitrate electrolyte at overpotentials inside and outside plateaus of the limiting diffusion current density, respectively. The three-dimensional pine-like dendrites constructed from approximately spherical grains were formed from the ammonium electrolyte at overpotentials both inside and outside plateaus of the limiting diffusion current density. The morphology of silver dendrites was correlated with their crystal structure at the semi quantiative level. The change of crystal orientation from the strong (111) preferred orientation for the needle-like dendrites to almost randomly orientied spherical grains in the pine-like dendrites obtained at the overpotential outside the plateau of the limiting diffusion current density was observed. This trend in change of crystal orientation and morphology of Ag nanostructures was accompanied by considerable increase of the specific surface area (SSA) of the produced powders. The average crystallite sizes were in the range of 38-50 nm, proving nanostructural character of the formed Ag particles.

AB - The results presented in this study include the prediction of the antifungal activity of 24 oxazolo derivatives based on their topological and electrostatic molecular descriptors, derived from the 2D molecular structures. The artificial neural network (ANN) method was applied as a regression tool. The input data for ANN modeling were selected by stepwise selection (SS) procedure. The ANN modeling resulted in three networks with the outstanding statistical characteristics. High predictivity of the established networks was confirmed by comparisons of the predicted and experimental data and by the residuals analysis. The obtained results indicate the usefulness of the formed ANNs in precise prediction of minimum inhibitory concentrations of the analyzed compounds towards Candida albicans. The Sum of Ranking Differences (SRD) method was used in this study to reveal possible grouping of the compounds in the space of the variables used in ANN modeling. The obtained results can be considered to be a contribution to development of new antifungal drugs structurally based on oxazole core, particularly nowadays when there is a lack of highly efficient antimycotics.

AB - The synthesis of orthogonally protected cis- and trans-3-amino-4-anilidopiperidine derivatives has been accomplished in six steps, starting from readily accessible 4-piperidone derivatives. The last three steps, i.e., N-acylation, Hofmann rearrangement, and carbamate cleavage, involved separated (+/-)-cis and (+/-)-trans intermediates. Complete retention of configuration was observed at position 3 of the piperidine ring. Specifically protected positions 1 and 3 at the piperidine scaffold allow for selective deprotection and introduction of diverse substituents at the respective nitrogen sites. The orthogonally protected anilidopiperidines open avenues to potentially pharmacologically active compounds, including opioids and various bivalent ligands for G protein-coupled receptors. In addition, a prototype of a novel class of fentanyl derivatives, possessing a 3-amino group, was synthesized by using the same approach.

AB - It was found that NaH suspension in DMSO was highly activated when reacted with an alcohol. The in situ generated NaH/alkoxide mixture permitted very rapid and complete deprotonation and acylation of various cyclic ketones with alkyl carbonates at ambient temperature. Activated NaH/alkoxide in DMSO is particularly effective in Dieckmann condensations, where it affords 5- and 6-membered carbocyclic or N-containing heterocyclic β-keto esters in high yields. A heterocyclic Dieckmann condensation was performed on a molar scale, demonstrating the scalability of the procedure. Besides, DMSO is non-toxic, relatively inexpensive and environmentally benign solvent.

AB - Detailed defect structure of dendrite formation was studied in order to connect the mesoscopic with the atomistic structure. It was demonstrated that twinning and stacking fault formation play a central role in the growth of electrodeposited Ag dendrites. The broad faces of Ag dendrites and the main trunk growth direction were found to be ((1) over bar 11) and [(1) over bar1 (2) over bar], respectively. Dendrite branches also formed and grew from the main trunk parallel to the [12 (1) over bar] and [(211) over bar] crystallographic directions. Twins and stacking faults were found to reside on the {111} crystallographic planes, as expected for a face centered cubic (FCC) Ag crystal. Using electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) we found two variants of in-plane 60 degrees rotational twin domains in the ((1) over bar 11) broad dendrite surface plane. The intersections of twins and stacking faults with dendrite arm surfaces are perpendicular to the (112) arm growth directions. However, occasionally twins on the {111} planes parallel to the (112) arm growth directions were also observed. Although defect assisted dendrite growth is facilitated by twinning and stacking fault formation on {111} planes, the growth directions of the trunk and branches are not of the (111) type, but rather close to (112). The (112) growth directions are maintained by breaking dendrite facets into thermodynamically stable 111 and 200 steps and structural ledges of different length.

AB - An efficient, one-pot procedure for the Hofmann rearrangement of aromatic and aliphatic amides has been developed. Methyl and benzyl carbamates are produced with N-bromoacetamide in the presence of lithium hydroxide or lithium methoxide, in high yields. -Phenylamino amides gave five-membered cyclic ureas stereospecifically. Side products of aryl or benzyl bromination were minimized. This procedure offers an easy access to various protected amines or diamines, which represent important synthetic precursors.

AB - Lead granules synthesized by the potentiostatic regime of electrolysis were characterized by the scanning electron microscopy technique. Effect of the different parameters of electrolysis, such as solution composition, overpotential of electrodeposition, and quantity of the electricity, on lead granular growth has been systematically investigated. Aside from the electrochemical aspects of lead granular growth, crystallographic aspects of the obtained granules were also analyzed. In the dependence of the electrodeposition conditions, granules of various shapes were obtained. The granules, such as octahedrons and hexagons, as well as many various types of twinned particles: single-twinned, multiply-twinned, lamellar-twinned, and many other complicated shapes denoted as polyparticles, were synthesized through regulation of the parameters of electrolysis. Increasing both the concentration of Pb2+ ions and overpotential of the electrodeposition favored the formation of more complicated forms. Formation of granules of specified crystallographic characteristics was also correlated with the basic principle of metal electrocrystallization.

AB - Electrodeposition of lead from the concentrated nitrate electrolyte in the potentiostatic regime of electrolysis has been investigated by the analysis of the potentiostatic current transients and scanning electron microscope (SEM). It was found that the process of Pb nucleation from the concentrated electrolyte follows Scharifker model based on the 3D (three-dimensional) instantaneous nucleation with diffusion-controlled growth. The deviations of the obtained dependencies from the theoretical prediction for this model have been also discussed. Needle-like and fern-like dendrites, as well as crystals of irregular shape (precursors of dendrites) were formed in the diffusion controlled electrodeposition. The SEM analysis of these dendritic forms revealed their 2D (two-dimensional) growth. The size of needle-like dendrites was considerably larger than the size of both the fern-like dendrites and the irregular crystals. Although the electrodeposition process occurred inside the linear diffusion layer of the macroelectrode, the shape and size of dendrites were determined by the effect of local diffusion fields formed around tips (spherical diffusion) and top edges (cylindrical diffusion) of protrusions formed in the initial stage of the electrodeposition. The growth rates under the conditions of spherical and cylindrical diffusion control were mutually compared and a faster growth under the conditions of the spherical, in relation to the cylindrical diffusion, was proved. The effect of the current density distribution on formation of the final forms of Pb dendrites was also discussed.

AB - The relationships between the contents of various metals (Cu, Ni, Pb and Al) in different types of chocolates were studied using chemometric approach. Chemometric analysis was based on the application of artificial neural networks (ANN). ANN was performed in order to select the significant models for predicting the metal contents. ANN equations that represent the content of one metal as a function of the contents of other metals were established. The statistical quality of the generated mathematical models was determined by standard statistical measures and cross-validation parameters. High agreement between experimental and predicted values, obtained in the validation procedure, indicated the good quality of the models. The obtained results indicate the possibility of predicting the metal contents in different types of chocolate and define the strong non-linear relationship between metal contents.

AB - The processes of Pb electrodeposition under diffusion control were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the formed crystals. The orientation of grains of hexagonal shape formed in the initial stage of electrodeposition strongly affected the final morphology of the Pb crystals. The formation of Pb crystals of the different shape from the same initial shape was discussed in terms of the effect of orientation of initially formed grains on the type of diffusion control. A spherical diffusion layer was formed around the tip of the hexagonal-shaped grain oriented with its tip towards the bulk solution that led to the formation of elongated crystals in the growth process. On the other hand, a cylindrical type of diffusion was responsible for the growth of hexagonal-shaped grains oriented with the lateral side towards the bulk solution. Pb crystals with well-defined sides parallel to the surface area of the macroelectrode were formed under this type of diffusion.

AB - The surface structure of powder particles, which allows free flow of copper powder, was examined. It has been shown that a sufficiently dense surface structure which permits free flow will be obtained if apparent density is higher than 2.2 - 2.3 g/cm(3). Such a surface structure can be obtained by reversing current electrodeposition of powder at considerably lower apparent densities of powder due to selective dissolution of subparticles during anodic time of reversing current wave. The surface structure of copper powder particles is discussed and correlated with the lowest apparent density at which the copper powder can still flow.

AB - An efficient, five-step synthetic approach to various acyclic 1,3-diamines has been developed and applied to the preparation of a novel class of open-chained fentanyl analogues. The acyclic derivatives 5.1–5.5 (all new compounds) were synthesized with the aim of estimating the significance of the piperidine ring for the opioid analgesic activity of anilido-piperidines. The starting β-keto-amide 1.1, prepared by the aminolysis of methyl acetoacetate with methylphenethylamine, (93 % yield), was successively reacted with NaH and BuLi, to form the highly reactive α,γ-dienolate anion 1.1a. Regio and chemoselective γ-alkylation of the dienolate with various primary and secondary alkyl halides furnished the β-keto-amides 1.2–1.5 (76–91 %). Reductive amination of the keto-amides 1.1–1.5 with aniline and Zn powder in acetic acid, via the enamine intermediates 2.1–2.5, afforded the β-anilino amides 3.1–3.5 (74–85 %). After reductive deoxygenation of the tertiary amide group, using in situ generated diborane, the corresponding 1,3-diamines 4.1–4.5 were obtained (87–97 %). The synthesis of (±)-2,3-seco-fentanyls 5.1–5.5 was completed by N-acylation of the diamines 4.1–4.5 with propionyl chloride, followed by precipitation of the monooxalate salts (86–95 %). The parent compound, 2,3-seco-fentanyl 5.1, was found to be a 40 times less potent narcotic analgesic than fentanyl but still 5–6 times more active than morphine in rats, while i-Pr derivative 5.3 was inactive. Apart from the pharmacological significance, the general procedure described herein may afford various functionalized, 1,3-diamines as potential complexing agents and building blocks for the synthesis of aza-crown ethers.

abstract = "An efficient, five-step synthetic approach to various acyclic 1,3-diamines has been developed and applied to the preparation of a novel class of open-chained fentanyl analogues. AB - The apparent density and flowability of copper powder are related to the structure of powder particles and the reversing current (RC) regimes. It was shown that the apparent density of the powders increases with the increase in the compactness of particles, hence with the increase in the frequency of RC and with the decrease in the cathodic to anodic time ratio.

AB - One of the most important properties of copper powder is its flow ability which depends on the shape and the structure of the powder particles. A procedure for the determination of a representative powder particle permitting the free flow of copper powder is proposed.

AB - The possibility of depositing copper powders with different apparent density by changing the shape of reversing current wave is shown. The morphology and crystallinity of powder particles can be varied considerably by changing shape of the reversing current wave and, hence, the apparent density of powders. The relation of apparent density with particle morphology and structure was illustrated.
AB - U radu je pokazana mogućnost dobijanja bakarnih prahova različitih nasipnih masa promenom oblika talasa reversne struje. Uspostavljena je zadovoljavajuća veza između morfologije i strukture čestica praha bakra i nasipne mase praha.
