AB - The objective of this research was to study the effect of immunocastration on the morphometric characteristics of sex glands in male Swallow-bellied Mangalitsa pigs. The study included 24 animals (13 entire and 11 immunocastrated males). The research focused on the following traits: age at slaughter (days), live weight at slaughter (kg), growth rate (kg day(-1)), and morphometric testicle traits (volume, cm(3); weight, g; length, width, thickness, and circumference, mm). The efficacy of immunocastration was determined based on androstenone and skatole levels in adipose tissue. The group of immunocastrated animals had higher body weight at slaughter (+18.8 kg) due to higher average daily live gain (+87 g). Immunocastration resulted in reduced morphometric measures of testes. The volumes and weight of testes/epididymes were reduced by 28.9-54.4 and 32.1-53.3%, respectively. Testis length and other size-related traits were significantly reduced by 17.4-27.6%. The linear regression effect of live body weight at slaughter within the immunocastrated group on testis measurements was not significant. Within the entire group of males, the increase of live body weight at slaughter by 1 kg had an effect on the increase of volume and weight of testes/epididymes by 0.55-2.24 cm(3) and 0.52-2.28 g, respectively. Other size-related testis traits increased by 0.04-0.55 mm for each kg of body weight. Immunocastration also resulted in 79.6% decrease in the weight of accessory sex glands. The present study is the first to demonstrate that immunocastration could be a method of choice for castration of the local fatty pig breed, Mangulica (Swallow-bellied Mangalitsa).

AB - The effect of breed, gender and the farrowing season on the variability of pork quality traits was examined in the present study. The observed properties were the pH value (pH45 and pH24) of the Longissimus dorsi muscle (LD) and Semimembranosus muscle (SM), the chemical composition (water, fat, ash and protein content), the water binding capacity, the colour and thickness of the LD fibres. In the present study, the influence (P lt 0.05) of the farrowing season for both measured pH values in SM was established, as well as significant influence (P lt 0.01) on pH24 in LD, while the other factors did not influence the pH of the muscles tested. The established difference in the mean values of water content in LD between fatteners SW and LWxSL (0.69%) was statistically very significant (P lt 0.001) while the influence of genotype and sex of fatteners was not determined for fat, ash and protein content. The genotype of fatteners influenced the ability to bind water (P lt 0.001) and the meat colour (P lt 0.05) while the muscle thickness was not affected (P> 0.05).

AB - Objective of this paper was to evaluate phenotypic variability of fertility traits of indigenous breeds of Mangalitsa (Swallow-Belly Strain Mangalitsa-SBSM), Moravka breed (M) and Resavka (R). Indigenous pig populations are usually constituted by a quite low number of active boars and sows. Their pedigree information is lacking or absent, complete phenotypic description is usually not available for most of these populations that are very well adapted to specific local agro-climatic environments. In controlled herds in period of four years, the average age at first farrowing (AFF) was 18.5 months with large variability of 5.9 months for Swallow belly Mangalitsa. Less AFF (14.3 months) and less variability (4.4 months), in relation to SBSM, determined for Moravka breed while for Resavka determined age of 14.7 months with at least variability for this trait from 4.4 months. The average number of piglets born alive (for a period of four years) of SBSM was the lowest from 4.37 to 4.81; in case of M and R, this value was significantly (P lt 0.001) higher (from 5.75 to 8.17 and for R breed 6.40 to 9.00). With average duration of suckling period (duration of lactation - DL) of 52.92 days in the first year for the breed SBSM with the lowest number of reared piglets (NRP=4.10) whereas the DL for M and R breeds was shorter (from 45.75 to 52.03 day) with a higher NRP (from 4.57 to 8.92 reared piglets).

AB - The most important part in reproductive management is the control of boar fertility. A common division of fertility traits is on the: in vitro (sperm traits) and in vivo (return rate, farrowing rate and litter size traits) fertility. In many studies were found differences between breed in the both groups of fertility traits. Variability of sperm traits of boars during the reproductive exploitation is influenced by various genetic (boar, breed) and paragenetic factors/effects (age, season, intensity of use). Good libido is desirable characteristics in boars, but the knowledge of the correlation of libido and boar fertility traits are limited. Also, there is no standardised procedure or methods for the estimation of libido of the boars. The permanent ranking of boars according to the reproductive efficiency should be performing. Good reproductive management implies the timely identification of boars with the low fertility (or close to the average).

AB - Heredity and correlation of litter size traits were observed in 3693 litters, i.e. in 1622 daughters of two genotypes Swedish Landrace genotype - SL; and F1 ♀ SLxLW. The study included daughters (minimum ten daughters per sire) of 24 sires. Heritability estimates for the total number of piglets per litter in the first, the first two parities, and for all three parities was 0.174; 0.167 and 0.135. Heritability estimates for the number of piglets born alive were 0.181; 0.160 and 0.121, and for the weight of litter at birth 0.166; 0.174 and 0.150. On the other hand, very low heritability was determined for the number of weaned piglets, litter weight of piglets reared, individual weight of born and reared piglets, i.e. for the traits that are under greater influence of the environment (from 0.004 to 0.037). Phenotypic and genetic correlations ranged from weak to complete (rp = 0.021 to rp = 0.973 and rg=0.188 to rg=0.999, respectively). Analysis of the significance of correlations showed that the genetic correlations were statistically highly significant (P lt 0.01).

AB - The influence of storage on meat colour differences between free-range Swallow Belly Mangalitsa (MA, n = 19) and commercially reared Swedish Landrace (SL, n = 17) pigs, are investigated in the present study. Proximate composition analyses were done on fresh samples of M. longissimus thoracis (LT) and M. gluteus medius (GM), while pH values and colour quality attributes were determined on fresh cuts of the muscles (day 1) and after 3 and 6 days of vacuum storage at 4 +/- 1 degrees C. MA pork had a significantly higher share of intramuscular fat, a darker colour, a higher deoxymyoglobin (Mb) content and oxy / met (oxymyoglobin / metmyoglobin) ratio, higher pH(24h) values and a slower pH decline compared to the control SL group (P lt 0.05). Greater changes in myoglobin forms during storage were observed in MA pork, which were reflected in a significant decrease in the content of Mb and an increase in the oxy / met ratio (P lt 0.05). After 6 days of vacuum storage, higher pH(6d) values, a lower metmyoglobin (MetMb) content and a higher oxy / met ratio of MA pork lead to the conclusion that aged meat from free-range Swallow Belly Mangalitsa pigs had better colour quality compared to Swedish Landrace pigs.

AB - Dry grasslands are highly diverse vegetation types of great importance for livestock production in rural Balkan areas. We analysed a large data set of phytosociological releves of dry grasslands (Festuco-Brometea and Festucetea vaginatae classes) in Serbia to produce the first overview of its classification, distribution, environmental conditions and biodiversity patterns. Phytocoenological releves from relevant literature sources and our own investigations were stored in the Vegetation Database of Serbia (EU-RS-002) and the Balkan Dry Grassland Database (EU-00-013). After heterogeneity-constrained random resampling, the final dataset contained 1,897 releves and 1,323 species. Species composition was classified hierarchically by the beta flexible method. We used species ecological indicator values for the estimation of the ecological conditions. Floristic and vegetation diversity and the conservation relevance of various dry grassland types, based on an assessment of endemic and protected species, were analysed. We identified 11 clusters, which were well characterised by their species composition and ecology. The first three clusters included loess and sand steppe grasslands mostly found in the Pannonian part of Serbia (Festucion rupicolae and Festucion vaginatae). The next three clusters consisted of Balkan ultramafic rocky grasslands of the order Halacsyetalia sendtneri, Balkan submediterranean mountain steppe grasslands on calcareous substrates, belonging to the order Astragalo-Potentilletalia and grasslands of the Balkan alliance Saturejion montanae on limestone. The third group of releves comprised Balkan alliances of dry grasslands on deep soils, the Chrysopogono-Danthonion and sub-continental steppes of the alliance Festucion valesiacae in hilly areas of Serbia, mostly in the thermophilous oak zone. According to ordination analysis (DCA), the main floristic gradient was largely determined by temperature and moisture. The Festuco-Brometea class exhibited high floristic diversity (1,323 plant species) and very high conservation relevance in view of the large number of Balkan endemic species (204). A total of 233 species and subspecies protected by national legislation within the studied vegetation were recorded.

AB - The aim of this study was to examine variability in cholesterol content and fatty acid composition in musculuslongissimus (MLLT) of various genotypes of pigs. Out of 30 male castrated animals used in the trial, 20 were Mangalitsa pigs ( Swallow Belly - SBM and White - WM) while 10 were of the Swedish Landrace breed - SL. The representative of pig meat breeds, SL had significantly less cholesterol in MLLT compared to SBM and WM pigs. The total monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) and unsaturated fatty acids (USFA) content was higher in SBM and WM than in SL pigs (p lt 0.001).

AB - The main objective of this study was to assess the effect of photoperiod on sexual activity of three breeds of boars: Swedish Landrace (n=34), Large White (n=38), and Duroc (n=32). Boar sexual activity was analysed based on the libido index and intensity of ejaculation. The libido index was calculated as the ratio between the duration of ejaculation and time of preparation until ejaculation. The intensity of ejaculation was the volume of ejaculate (mL) secreted in the unit of time (min). The effect of photoperiod was analysed as the effect of duration of daylight ( lt 12 h and >12 h) within photoperiod intervals (increasing and decreasing). Impact assessment was carried out by applying the General Linear Model procedure. Libido and intensity of ejaculation varied under the impact of photoperiod and the breed of boars. With the increase in age, the boar libido weakened, while the volume of ejaculate and intensity of ejaculation increased. Boars manifested better libido when the daylight lasted longer than 12 h in both photoperiod intervals. Different from libido, the volume of ejaculate and intensity of ejaculation were highest when the daylight was shorter than 12 h, but only in the decreasing photoperiod interval. Swedish Landrace boars manifested best libido, while in the production of sperm the Duroc boars were inferior compared with Swedish Landrace and Large White. The phenotypic relationship among libido, ejaculate volume, and ejaculation intensity ranges from very low to high; however, the coefficients were positive, which indicates the possibility of simultaneous improvement of these traits.

AB - The objective of this research paper was to make an assessment of breeding value of performance tested gilts of Swedish Landrace and F-1 crossbreds of Swedish Landrace and Great Yorkshire by the method of selection index. The traits on whose basis the breeding value was estimated were: daily liveweight gain, average backfat thickness measured at two sites and carcass meat percentage. These traits were corrected for body mass of 100kg by the method of base indexes and the following average values were determined: corrected daily liveweight gain (KZDP) 408.93g/day, corrected average backfat thickness measured at two sites (KSL) 9.77mm and corrected carcass meat percentage (KPM) 61.08%. Studying the effect of genotype, year and birth season of gilts a statistically significant variation (P>0.05) of these traits provoked by the mentioned factors was not determined while the gilts sire statistically highly significantly (P lt 0.001) influenced all studied traits. Heritability coefficients were: h(2)= 0.255 for KZDP, h(2)= 0.356 for KSL and h(2)= 0.349 for KPM. The four selection index equations were constructed among which as the most optimal was chosen the one which includes all three traits (KZDP, KSL and KPM) and whose coefficient of the correlation of selection index and aggregate genotype was r(IAG) = 0.594.

AB - In this paper, the comparative investigations on chemical content, fatty acid profiles and sensory properties of traditional fermented dry kulen sausages are presented. Five types of kulen sausages were made, which varied depending on the percentage of meat and fat derived from different pig breeds: autochthonous (Mangalitsa and Moravka) and commercial (Swedish Landrace). Kulen sausages made from Mangalitsa and Moravka pork meat had the lowest moisture and protein content and the highest total amount of fat. Sausages made from the combination of Mangalitsa and Moravka meat were superior in terms of odor, taste, aftertaste and overall acceptability. The highest cholesterol content was found in sausages made from meat of the autochthonous pig breeds. However, sausages made from the meat of Mangalitsa pigs contained higher levels of monounsaturated fatty acid and unsaturated fatty acid, and lower saturated fatty acid levels. This research indicates that pig breed affects the chemical and sensory characteristics of traditional dry fermented sausages.

AB - The objective of this study was to determine the chemical composition and fatty acid content in m. longissimus dorsi (MLD) of two indigenous pig breeds (ML - Swallow-belly Mangalitsa and M - Moravka) reared in free range farm conditions and fed complete mixtures used for commercial meat pig genotypes. The body mass of ML and M pigs at slaughter was, on average, 107.14 and 107.61 kg, respectively. In MLD of M pigs, more total fat was measured compared to ML breed (6.96 % compared to 5.10 %, P lt 0.05). Protein content in MLD of ML pigs was higher by +0.92 % (P lt 0.01) compared to M pigs. Male castrates of M pigs had more fat compared to gilts of the same breed (8.64 compared to 5.29 %), and the 3.35 % difference between mean values was statistically significant (P lt 0.05). The breed of pigs influenced the total saturated fatty acids (P=0.011) and mono-unsaturated fatty acid (P=0.003) contents, but not the content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (P=0.325). In the case of saturated fatty acids in the MLD of ML and M pigs, the most common were C16:0 (25.05 % and 25.53 %) and C18:0 (12.73 % and 14.40 %). The MLD of M pigs contained 1.67 % more stearic acid compared to ML pigs (P=0.004). Pigs of ML, compared to M pigs, had more C18:1cis-9 (+2.31 %), C16:1 (+0.49 %), C17:1 (+0.10 %) and less C20:1cis-11 (-0.25 %). The content of two essential fatty acids, C18:2n-6 and C18:3n-3, did not vary according to breed or sex of pigs (P>0.05). The n-6/n-3 ratio was higher than optimal (18.7 for breed ML and 13.7 for M).

AB - These investigations were attended to identify the influence of parental flock age at heavy hybrid Cobb 500 (usage period) on more important reproductive capabilities, respectively, on carrying eggs intensity of brood eggs, incubation results, egg mass, one-day old chick weight, as well as on relative chick weight share in complete egg weight. Flock usage period lasted for 40 weeks (all eggs), respectively 38 (brood eggs) weeks and there was possibility, based on achieved results, with evaluation of phenotype correlation, to get some concrete conclusions about the age influence on analysed parameters during mentioned flock rising period. Phenotype correlation among investigated characteristics has been identified since second half of parental flock using period, since 41(st) week age (20(th) carrying eggs week) up to the end of production process when parental flock was 61 week old (41(st) egg production week). Flock age has statistically significant (P lt 0.05) influence on carrying eggs intensity of brood eggs until 50(th) week (r(p) = 0.389) and on percentage of chicken feasibility regard the complete number of inputted eggs until RP week (r(p) = 0.416). There was statistically significant increasing of egg weight and one-day old incubated chicken weight (P lt 0.001) as parental flock was older. Complete correlation was found between egg weight and absolute chick weight (P lt 0.001), and very strong (P lt 0.001) or strong (P lt 0.01) correlation between egg mass and relative chick share [(chicken weight/egg weight) x 100].

AB - The effect of sire breed (Swedish landrace and large White), sires within the breed, genotype, sex and season of birth of offspring on age at slaughtering, back fat thickness measured on three points (withers, center of the back and rump), length of carcass side Os pubis-atlas and Os pubis-first rib, yield and share of meat in warm carcass sides of average mass of 81,39 kg, using Yugoslav standards, was investigated. Results obtained show that investigated traits of offspring varied between sire breeds, genotype and sex (P lt 0,01). Sires within Swedish Landrace influenced (P lt 0,01) variation of back fat thickness (center of the back, rump, back+rump), age at slaughtering, length of carcass side Os pubis-atlas and Os pubis-first rib, but no effect was established on yield and share of meat (P>0,05). Sires within Large White breed had no effect on age at slaughtering and length of carcass side (P>0,05), whereas on other traits influence was demonstrated (P lt 0,01 and P lt 0,05). Season of birth had influence in the second model (P lt 0,05) on age at slaughtering and in both models on length of carcass side Os pubis-atlas and Os pubis-first rib (P lt 0,01 and P lt 0,05), whereas on other investigated traits no effect was established (P>0,05). Age, back fat thickness, length of carcass side and yield of meat were dependent on the mass of warm carcass sides.

AB - Objective of the paper was to present characteristics of native/autochthonous pig breed Moravka, reared in the previous century, as well as results relating to activities such as collection, selection, identification and production performance of investigated heads in 2004. Moravka is one of three pig breeds in Serbia included in the programme of preservation of animal genetic resources.

AB - Investigation of phenotypic and genetic variability of carcass side quality traits and pH values of M. semimembranosusa was carried out on 997 fatteners (446 females and 551 castrates) who originated from 20 sires. Sires were pure breed (Swedish Landrace, Large White and Duroc) and two breed crosses (Duroc x hampshire). In average 48,8 progeny - fatteners over sire were tested. Obtained data was processed by application of several methods of least squares (Harvey, 1990) in which sire genotype, sex and mass of warm carcass sides were included (linear effect) or age at the end of fattening (linear effect). Sires and sex of offspring influenced variation of all traits (P lt 0.01) except on value pH45. Genotype of sire influenced (P lt 0.05) variation of both pH values Heritability coefficients of quality traits of carcass sides were medium and in the interval from 0.234 to 0.408. Low value of heritability coefficient (0.098) was evaluated for trait pH45. Contrary to this trait, heritability of pH24 was high. Phenotypic relation of carcass side traits was of different force (from very weak to complete) and sign. Between traits pH45 and pH24 evaluated coefficient of phenotypic correlation wasn't statistically significant.

AB - Investigation of quality variability of pig carcass was carried out on 1443 fatlings (gilts and barrows). They were progenies of 22 (Farm A) and 12 sires (Farm B), 5 breeds-crossbreds (Swedish Landrace, Large White, Duroc Hampshire, Duroc x Hampshire). Animals were fed with standardized feed mixture semi ad libitum. The quality of carcass sides was determined on the slaughter-line according to Regulation (1985). Investigation included following traits: weight of warm carcass (MTP, kg), meat in carcass sides (KMP, kg and SMP, %), total mass and ratio of leg+shoulder+loin (MFO, kg and UFO, %). Obtained results were processed using several models (Harvey, 1990) which included sire genotype, sire, sex progeny and mass of warm carcass (regression effect). All investigated traits varied under the influence of sire genotype (P lt 0.01) on farm B. The effect of sire genotype was significant (P lt 0.01) on KMP and SMP on the Farm A. All traits of carcass quality varied under the influence of sires. Gilts had higher KMP, SMP, MFO and UFO compared to male castrated heads. Difference in Total Breeding Value between best and worst boar was 10.41 (Farm A) and 11.24 index point (Farm B).

AB - The basic goal of these investigations was to reconsider the hypothesis that year is an important factor which statistically affects phenotypic variability of production traits registered in performance test under conditions of a central test station and make decision to include this effect in models for estimation of phenotypic and genetic parameters which are needed for the genetic evaluation. The investigations were carried out over a seven year period (from 1995 to 2001) in the Station for testing of production capacities of swine at Agricultural Corporation "Beograd" in Padinska Skela. The examinations included a total of 738 tested animals of following breeds: Swedish Landrace, Large White and Hampshire. All three breeds were analyzed together because number of tested boars of Swedish Landrace and Hampshire breed was too small in comparison to the Large White breed. The least squares method was used to test the significance of the effects of year on variability of production traits. Test of significance showed that the year at the start of the test influenced (P lt 0.001) all feed efficiency traits and all growth traits except test duration and average daily gain. The body composition traits were significantly influenced (P lt 0.01 and P lt 0.001) by year except muscle depth. However, it was not expected that the body weight at the start of the test and at the end of the test was influenced (P lt 0.05 and P lt 0.001) by year at the start of the test. The weight at the start and at the end of the test must stay within strict limits proposed by the testing rules. These investigations showed that effect of year should be included in the models that are used to estimate of phenotypic and genetic parameters which are needed for the genetic evaluation of boars tested under conditions of the central station.

AB - The main objective of this study was to investigate the importance of the sires effect on fenotypic variability of production traits of performance tested boars of Large White, Landrace. and Hampshire breeds of pig. The data used in this study were collected from 738 performance tested young boars at the PKB Pig Testing Station in Padinska Skela, from 1995 to 2001. Analysed traits were initial age (IA), final age (FA), test duration (TD), average daily gain on test (ADG), lifetime ADG (LADG), amount of total consumed feed (TF), feed conversion ratio (FCR), daily feed intake (DPI) and body composition traits taken by ultrasonic equipment PIGLOG 105 (backfat thickness - BF1 and BF2, muscle depth - MD and lean meat content - LM) Data was analysed by fixed models of least squares method. Analysis of variance showed that sires nested within Hampshire breed highly significant influenced all investigated traits. Growth, feed efficiency and body composition traits except muscle depth, were highly significant influenced by sires of Large White breed. All feed efficiency traits and muscle depth were not influenced by sires within Swedish Landrace breed.
Osobine porasta, iskorišćavanja hrane i kvaliteta trupa, izuzev dubine m.l.d.-a, nerastova rase veliki jorkšir varirale su pod uticajem očeva. Nisu ustanovijena statistički značajna variranja (P>0,05) ni jedne ispitivane osobine iskorišćavanja hrane i dubine m.l.d.-a između grupa polusrodnika nerastova-očeva rase švedski landras.

AB - The aims of this paper were: determination of correlation between fertility traits both at phenotypic and at genetic level, determination of dependency of exsamined parameters from the analysed data size as well as determination of influence of data corrections on correlations between traits. Phenotypic correlation between litter size and weight did not confirm after correction for NWP and LWW. Between NLB and NTB phenotypic correlation was complete (from rP=0.922 to rP=0.929) and statistical very significant (P lt 0.01). Genetic correlation among traits were in range from low (rG=0.230, NWP:TNB) to complete (rG=1.197, cNWP:NLB). So wide range for genetic correlation was consequence of analyzed data set. Statistical significance for obtained parameters were high (P lt 0.01).

AB - Bringing into correlation values that by their nature have no joint measuring unit is complex, but these values have decisive effect on production and demand from the researcher to compare them in methodologically correct way and express them through certain value. Determining the expression of values using same measuring units opens many doors of all kinds of analyses and enables their evaluation and possibility for their combination in regard to investigation and inclusion of potential parameters as achievable values. In business activity, different factors of incoming parameters as variables are present, and expected outgoing result should be, more exactly, better in quality and quantity (in the sense of full use of existing capacities or performing of service). At the same time, complete procedure of methodological processing should, first of all, be simple and, secondly easy applicable as well as economical, more exactly profitable. Whole procedure is presented through orientation procedure of the production control procedure and it is carried out or performed in an objective and easy way using registered elements and parameters reaching the economical efficiency of the piglet production. This is complex methodological effort considering the zoological characteristics of the production line, traits and presence of certain variables as parameters of this production. In this paper, procedure of evaluation of components is presented and explained systematically, taking in consideration specific zoological and technological traits, and they were calculated into valuable measuring expressions and units.
