AB - Solid-state mechanical activation of MgO and alpha-Al2O3 powders was used to produce MgAl2O4. The cation site occupancy in the resulting MgAl2O4 spinel was investigated using different methods. Differential thermal analysis and thermal gravimetry showed that mechanical activation reduced the spinel formation temperature by around 200 degrees C, and the corresponding activation energy by about 25%. In addition, characteristic temperatures for evaporation of physisorbed water and decomposition of Mg(OH)(2) shifted to lower values, and peaks were more pronounced. Raman spectra were used to characterize the degree of inversion as a function of the sintering temperature for all of the sintered specimens, indicating that the breaking point for ordering of the crystal structure was around 1500 degrees C for non-activated samples, and 1400 degrees C for activated samples.

AB - Sintering of pure cordierite 2MgO:2Al(2)O(3):5SiO(2), and cordierite with the addition of 5 mass % TeO2 was studied. Green bodies were prepared from powder mixtures mechanically activated in a high-energy planetary mill, shaped by uniaxial (20 MPa) and cold isostatic pressing (1000 MPa). The pressure-less sintering of these specimens was performed at 1350 degrees C for 1 h. High relative density over 95% of the theoretical value was obtained through solid-state reaction and pressure-less sintering of powder activated for 40 min, and for the first time reported in the literature. Phase composition and microstructures of sintered samples were determined by XRD and SEM, coupled with EDS mapping. The real part of the complex relative permittivity of the samples was measured at 200 MHz. The loss tangent of all samples was below the resolution of the measurement setup. A strong correlation between the relative permittivity and the density agrees with previously published data.

AB - Iron oxide, in the form of magnetite (MG)-functionalized porous wollastonite (WL), was used as an adsorbent for heavy metal ions (cadmium and nickel) and oxyanions (chromate and phosphate) removal from water. The porous WL was synthesized from calcium carbonate and siloxane by controlled sintering process using low molecular weight submicrosized poly(methyl methacrylate) as a pore-forming agent. The precipitation of MG nanoparticles was carried out directly by a polyol-medium solvothermal method or via branched amino/carboxylic acid cross-linker by solvent/nonsolvent method producing WL/MG and WL--APS/MG adsorbents, respectively. The structure/properties of MG functionalized WL was confirmed by applying FTIR, Raman, XRD, Mossbauer, and SEM analysis. Higher adsorption capacities of 73.126, 66.144, 64.168, and 63.456mgg(-1) for WL--APS/MG in relation to WL/MG of 55.450, 52.019, 48.132, and 47.382mgg(-1) for Cd2+, Ni2+, phosphate, and chromate, respectively, were obtained using nonlinear Langmuir model fitting. Adsorption phenomena were analyzed using monolayer statistical physics model for single adsorption with one energy. Kinetic study showed exceptionally higher pseudo-second-order rate constants for WL--APS/MG, e.g., 1.17-13.4 times, with respect to WL/MG indicating importance of both WL surface modification and controllable precipitation of MG on WL--APS.

AB - Magnesium aluminate has spinel structure and very good mechanical, chemical, and thermal properties. Owing to these properties, it has a wide range of applications including refractory ceramics, optically transparent ceramic windows and armors. Its low dielectric permeability and low loss tangent enable its using for integrated electronic devices, as well. Furthermore, as a porous ceramic, magnesium aluminate has important application as humidity sensor, catalyst and filter for waste water purification. In this paper, synthesis and characterization of MgAl2O4 was performed. Stochiometric ratio of MgO and Al2O3powders was mixed and calcined within the temperatures range 1500-1800 oC to produce pure spinel phase. Thereafter pellets were crushed and treated in planetary ball mill for 60 minutes to obtained fine grain. All powders, calcined and milled, were examined for phase composition, crystal structure, and morphology. The obtained results showed that by increasing the temperature denser samples but more fragile have been synthesized. Milling for 1 hour leads to crumble of bigger particles and getting finer, single phase powders. XRPD and Raman spectroscopy showed disorder in crystal structure after milling.

AB - Magnesium aluminate, MgAl2O4 and other alumina-based spinels are ceramics with high hardness, high melting point and mechanical strenght. Spinels can also be used as dielectrics in microwave applications. The goal of this study was to examine the effects of mechanical activation and sintering temperatures on physico-chemical properties of spinel. MgAl2O4 was produced by solid state reaction between MgO and α-Al2O3. The starting powders were mixed by ball milling to homogenize without significant particle size reduction. Mechanical activation of mixed powders was performed in a high-energy planetary ball mill in air for 1 h. Powders were compacted at 300 MPa. Heat treatments were performed in air, at temperatures ranging from 1200 to 1600 °C with 2 h dwell time, to determine the amount of spinel formation as a function of temperature. Phase composition and microstructure of initial powders and heated samples were determined by means of X-ray diffraction, particle size analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The influences of milling and consolidation parameters were studied by electrical measurements and mechanical characterization. The main conclusion of this study was that mechanical activation for 60 min initiated a mechano-chemical reaction, resulted in spinel formation at much lower temperatures than within non-activated powders, and indicated that final sintering stage started at much lower temperatures for activated powders. Changes in microstructure parameters, as a consequence of mechanical treatment and subsequent heating of investigated powder mixtures, strongly affect electrical and mechanical properties of the final ceramics.

AB - Alumina-based compounds have many technological applications and attract great attention even after decades of investigation, due to their good chemical, electrical, and mechanical properties. A mixture of several alumina modifications (α-, κ-, γ-Al2O3) doped with 1 wt% of Mn2O3 was used for this experiment. The powder was mechanically activated for 60 min in an ethanol medium. After compaction, green bodies were sintered in the temperature range from 1200 to 1400 °C. Microstructures of the obtained specimens were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The influence of morphological changes on electrical and mechanical properties was examined in detail. We have developed a test fixture and corresponding software for measurement of the relative dielectric permittivity and the loss tangent of ceramic specimens. This new method overcomes the problems of dimensions and shape of samples, as well as the problem of applying silver paste. The accuracy is around 2% for ε'r and 0.003 for tanδ. We demonstrate that the mechanical activation (MA) has the dominant influence on lowering the characteristic temperatures and microstructure development, which further leads to increased permittivity and tensile strength.

AB - The maximal allowed concentration (MAC) for As(V) in water decreased from 50 to 10 μg/l, by considering the harmful effects of arsenic on the environment and human health. In order to achieve the established rigorous requirements, it is necessary to develop new materials and design new forms of adsorbents that can reduce the concentration of arsenic in drinking water. In this paper, the synthesized magnetite/3D-printed wollastonite hybrid sorbent was used to remove As(V) from aqueous solutions. 3D-printed wollastonite was obtained using the 3D-printing technique from methylhydrocyclosiloxane and calcium carbonate as precursors. Synthesis of adsorption material was carried out by depositing magnetite from an iron(II)-sulfate solution by potassium hydroxide on 3D-printed wollastonite. The adsorption properties of the hybrid adsorbent depend on the properties of magnetite and its porosity. This could be achieved by modifying the processes of depositing magnetite on the porous 3D-printed wollastonite. Characterization of the obtained material was performed using FTIR, SEM and TG-DTA. An investigation of the sorption properties of hybrid adsorbents was carried out for As(V) removal - one relative to the starting pH value of the solution, the adsorbent mass, the temperature and the adsorption time. Determination of adsorption parameters was performed by applying Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin- Radushkevich equations. Kinetics, using pseudo-first, pseudo-second and second order equations, as well as diffusion rate were determined using Veber-Moris and HSDM models. Determination of kinetics and adhesion parameters at three different temperatures enabled the calculation of thermodynamic and activation parameters of the adsorption process, which contributed to a better understanding of the adsorption mechanism.

AB - Steatite, as ceramic with composition predominantly resting on magnesium silicate, was produced from economic resources - talc, aluminosilicate clays, and either BaCO3 or feldspar as flux. Titanium dioxide was a doping agent. Four steatite mixtures were mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill for 30, 45 or 60 min, prior to the thermal treatment. Two-step sintering with initial phase set at 1350 degrees C and holding period conducted at 1250 degrees C was applied to initiate diffusion and prevent grain growth. Thereby, a high density ceramic material with low-porous submicron structure was acquired. The effects of TiO2 addition on densification, microstructure, and dielectric characteristics of steatites were monitored. The thermal stability of green mixtures was tested by differential thermal and thermogravimetric analyses. Changes in crystallinity and mineral phase composition were observed by the X-ray diffraction technique. Microstructural visualization with spatial arrangements of individual chemical elements on surface of the sintered ceramics was acquired by scanning electron microscopy accompanied with EDS mapping. In order to test the possibility of employment of the obtained steatites in insulation materials, electrical measurements were conducted by recording variations of the dielectric constant and loss tangent as a function of alternations in the mix-design and the mechanical activation period.

AB - The paper presents results of investigation of the influence of mechanical activation of shungite, a Russian natural mineral rich in silica and carbon, on its sintering behavior. The mechanical activation of the starting powder was performed in a high-energy ball mill in time intervals from 0 to 480 minutes. The phase composition of the starting mixtures and sintered samples was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction method. The scanning electron microscopy was performed in order to determine changes in the microstructure. Sintering was performed at various temperatures for 2 h, in an Ar and vacuum atmosphere. Dielectric properties of the sintered samples were measured in the frequency range from 1 to 500 MHz. The obtained results indicate that sintered shungite powder is a good candidate for applications as an absorber of electromagnetic waves in microwave engineering.

AB - Sintered alumina powder represents suitable material for usage in various industry fields (e.g., as chip carriers in electronics, microwaves, jewelry production), due to convenient physical properties, such as sinterability, electrical and mechanical features. Those properties can be modified by addition of different oxides and/or mechanical treatment. Therefore, in this investigation the alumina was doped with 1 wt. % of Cr2O3, Mn2O3 and NiO, respectively, followed by 1 hour of mechanical activation at 400 rpm in planetary ball mill. Sintering of powder mixtures was tracked by sensitive dilatometer up to 1400 °C. The final density values varied from cca. 2 ̶ 3.2 g/cm3. Changes in microstructure were observed by means of SEM. The influence of additives along with mechanical activation is monitored trough changes in electrical permittivity and loss tangent. Compared to pure alumina, the additives lower the relative permittivity and increase dielectric losses. For a given mixture, the sintering increases the relative permittivity and decreases losses.

AB - The influence of the sintering method on the mineral phase transformations and development of the crystalline microstructure of steatite ceramics was investigated. The steatite samples were fabricated from talc and bentonite as low-cost raw materials. Feldspar and barium carbonate, as fluxing agents, were altered in the steatite composition. Dilatometric analysis was applied in the monitoring of the dimensional changes and thereby densification of steatite during the traditional sintering (TS) procedure up to 1200 degrees C. Spark plasma sintering (SPS) method was used under the following sintering conditions: 100 degrees C/min heating rate, uniaxial pressure of 50 MPa; sintering temperature 800 degrees C/1 min or 1000 degrees C/2 min. Crystallinity changes and mineral phase transition during sintering were observed by X-ray diffraction technique. Microstructural visualization of the samples and the spatial arrangements of individual chemical elements were achieved via scanning electron microscopy equipped with the EDS mapping. It was found that SPS sintering facilitated all microstructural changes during high temperature treatment and shifted them to lower temperatures. SPS treatment conducted at 1000 degrees C resulted in maximum densification of the steatite powder compacts and the formation stabilized protoenstatite structure.

AB - Corundum (alpha-alumina) is a suiTab. material for usage in various industry fields owing to its chemical stability, electrical and mechanical features. It is known that properties of ceramics could be modified by addition of different oxides, as well as by changing the consolidation parameters. In this respect, alumina was doped with 1 wt.% of Cr2O3, Mn2O3 and NiO, followed by 1 hour of mechanical activation in a high-energy planetary ball mill. A sensitive dilatometer was used for sintering of powder mixtures up to 1400 degrees C and recording the obtained dilatation. The final density varied between cca. 1.9 and 3.3 g/cm(3). Microstructural changes were detected by SEM measurements. Changes in electrical permittivity and loss tangent were associated with the preparation conditions (types of additives, duration of mechanical activation). For a given mixture, the sintering increases the relative permittivity and decreases losses, exhibiting the optimal values of 8.32 and 0.027, respectively, for the sample activated 60 minutes and sintered, with the addition of MnO2. Mechanical measurements indicate significant differences in strength with the addition of different transition metal oxides. Samples with Mn and Ni, activated and sintered, with strength of 121 and 86 MPa, respectively, have a significantly higher tensile strength than the other tested samples, due to their more compact microstructures.

AB - In the present study the effect of preparation conditions on microstructure and electrical properties of MgTiO3 ceramics was investigated. Mixture of MgO and TiO2 powders was subjected to mechanical activation for different time periods. Two types of sintering (two-step and HIP sintering) were performed on green bodies prepared by cold isostatic pressing. AC impedance spectroscopy in the low-frequency range (from 20 Hz to 1 MHz), at room and elevated temperatures, were performed in order to separate contribution of grains and grain boundaries to capacitance, resistance and conductivity of magnesium titanate ceramics. The special attention was directed to explanation of the influence of mechanical activation on electrical and morphological changes in sintered samples. The significant decrease of partial oxygen pressure in HP sintering atmosphere caused the change from insulating behavior of MgTiO3 samples after two-step sintering to semiconducting one.

AB - Post-sintering of magnesium titanate ceramics by hot isostatic pressing (HIP) in an oxygen-free atmosphere significantly alters various electrical properties of the product. In particular, the sintered material becomes a semiconductor. The aims of this paper are: to extend our investigations of the electrical properties of this material by expanding the frequency range of measurements, to design interpolation formulas for the frequency dependence of the complex relative permittivity, and to propose HIP-sintered magnesium titanate as a material for thermistors that have a negative-temperature-coefficient resistance (NTCR), as well as for varistors.

AB - In this paper, synthesis of porous wollastonite-based ceramics was reported. Ceramic precursor, methylhydrocyclosiloxane, together with micro-sized CaCO3, was used as starting material. After 20 min of ultrasound treatment, and calcination at 250 degrees C for 30 min, yeast as a pore-forming agent was added to the as-obtained powders. Sintering regime was set up based on the results obtained by differential thermal analysis. Prepared mixture was pressed into pallets and sintered at 900 degrees C for 1 h. After the sintering regime, porous wollastonite-based ceramics was obtained. The phase composition of the sintered samples as well as microstructures was analyzed by X-ray diffraction method and SEM. In a batch test, the influence of pH, contact time and initial ion concentration on adsorption efficiency of As+5, Cr+6, and phosphate ions on synthesized wollastonite-based ceramics were studied. Time-dependent adsorption was best described by pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Weber-Morris model that predicted intra-particle diffusion as a rate-controlling step of overall process. High adsorption capacities 39.97, 21.87, and 15.29 mgg(-1) were obtained for As+5, Cr+6, and phosphate ions, respectively.

AB - The structural characteristics of polymer nanocomposites with functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix have been studied in relation to nanofiller loading and surface functionality. Different functional groups have been covalently attached on the MWCNTs sidewalls in order to induce interfacial interactions at nanofiller/polymer interface, which resulted in an improved nanomechanical features. Structural properties of nanocomposites, studied with XRD and Raman analysis, indicated the most pronounced decrease in a degree of amorphousness for samples containing 0.5 and 1 wt% of MWCNTs functionalized with dapsone (dapson-MWCNT) and diethyl malonate (dem-MWCNT). SEM and TEM micrographs confirmed improved dispersibility of the MWCNTs modified with aromatic structure of dapsone inside PMMA matrix. A significant increase in a glass transition temperature of over 60 degrees C has been found for the 1 wt% dapson-MWCNT nanocomposite. Additional modification of dapson-MWCNT by further increasing aromaticity and voluminosity of attached moiety (fid-MWCNT), showed 30 degrees C increases in a glass transition temperature at 4 wt% of nanofiller loading, which is similar to shift of 37 degrees C with loading of MWCNTs modified with ester terminal group. A maximum increase of 56% of reduced modulus and 86% of hardness was obtained for 1 wt% loading of dapson-MWCNT nanofiller.

AB - In this study, porous macro- and micro-cellular wollastonite-based ceramics was synthesized. A ceramic precursor, methylhydrocyclosiloxane, together with micro-sized CaCO3, was used as a starting material. After 20 min of ultrasound treatment, and calcination at 250 degrees C for 30 min, different pore-forming agents were added to the as-obtained powders. Differential thermal analysis was used to determine characteristic temperatures of processes occurring within powders during heating. Based on the obtained results, the sintering regime was set up. The prepared mixtures were pressed into pallets and sintered at 900 degrees C. During the sintering regime, porous wollastonite-based ceramics was obtained. The phase composition of the sintered samples, as well as the microstructures, were analyzed by using X-ray diffraction and SEM. A two-phase system was detected in all samples, CaSiO3 wollastonite and Ca2SiO4 larnite, and their ratio varied with each pore-forming agent. It was observed that the addition of different pore-forming agents resulted in significantly different microstructures. In a batch test, the influence of pH, the contact time and the initial ion concentration on the adsorption efficiency of As+5, Cr(+6)and phosphate ions on the synthesized adsorbents were studied. Time-dependent adsorption is best described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Weber-Morris model, which predict intra-particle diffusion as a rate-controlling step of the overall process. High adsorption capacities, 21.93, 23.88, and 27.29 mg g(-1), were obtained for the CaCO3-siloxane-nanocellulose sorbent, and similar/lower capacities were obtained for the CaCO3-siloxane-PMMA and CaCO3-siloxane-cotton wool adsorbents.

AB - In this study the characterization of FeCo-2V alloys toroidal samples produced by PIM/MIM technology was presented. The feedstock for metal injection molding (MIM) was prepared by mixing starting FeCoV powder with a low viscosity binder. Green samples were subjected to solvent debinding and subsequent thermal debinding followed by sintering. Sintering was performed during 3.5 hours from 1370 degrees C to 1460 degrees C in hydrogen atmosphere in order to attain the appropriate mechanical and magnetic properties. Microstructure, hardness HV10 and magnetic hysteresis B(H) were investigated as a function of sintering temperature. Optimum combination of functional properties was observed after sintering at temperature of 1370 degrees C. In addition, magnetic properties were analyzed as frequency dependent and successfully simulated in operating frequency range from 5 Hz to 60 Hz.

AB - The focus of the study was on providing insights into interconnections between sintering and development of the crystalline microstructure, and consequently variations in dielectric behavior of four steatites fabricated from a low-cost raw material, i.e. talc. The changes, induced by the alternations of the binders (bentonite, kaolin clay) and fluxing agents (BaCO3, feldspar), were monitored in the temperature range 1000 degrees to 1250 degrees C in which complete densification and re-crystallization of the investigated structures were accomplished. The critical points in the synthesis of steatite materials were assessed by instrumental analyses. Crystallinity changes and mineral phase transition during sintering were monitored by X-ray diffraction technique. Microstructural visualization of the samples and the spatial arrangements of individual chemical elements were achieved via scanning electron microscopy accompanied with EDS mapping. The thermal stability was observed on the green mixtures using differential thermal and thermo gravimetric analyses. Electrical measurements recorded variations of the dielectric constant (epsilon(r)) and loss tangent (tan delta) as a function of the sintering temperature. The investigation highlighted critical design points, as well as the optimal combinations of the raw materials for production of the steatite ceramics for advanced electrical engineering applications.

AB - Since cordierite, 2MgO center dot 2Al(2)O(3)center dot 5SiO(2) (MAS), is a very useful high-temperature ceramic material, it is important to decrease its sintering temperature. In order to accelerate the process of sintering, 5.00 mass% MoO3 was added to the starting mixtures. The mechanical activation of the starting mixtures was performed in a high-energy ball mill in time intervals from 0 to 160 min. After the activation, starting mixtures were sintered at 1300 A degrees C for 2 h. In order to determine the impact of mechanical activation on particle size distribution and powders morphology, the mechanically treated powders were characterized by a laser light-scattering particle size analyzer and scanning electron microscopy. The phase composition of the starting mixtures and sintered samples was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction method. In order to determine temperature intervals of chemical reactions and phase transitions, differential thermal analyses (DTA) and thermo-gravimetric analysis were used. Kissinger's equation was employed to calculate apparent activation energies of various processes that occur within the system during heating. Based on the obtained DTA results, it was established that mechanical activation along with MoO3 additive has influence on sintering temperature which was decreased for more than 100 A degrees C, comparing to the literature data.

AB - Crystal structure and morphology of mechanically activated nanocrystalline Fe/BaTiO3 was investigated using a combination of spectroscopic and microscopic methods. These show that mechanical activation led to the creation of new surfaces and the comminution of the initial powder particles. Prolonged milling resulted in formation of larger agglomerates of BaTiO3 and bimodal particle size distribution, where BaTiO3 particles were significantly larger than those of iron-containing phases. Milling times of 210 min and above lead to a significant decrease in temperature of the oxidation of iron in the sample, indicating abrupt change in reactivity. Raman spectroscopy analysis has revealed that activation had a pronounced influence on Fe/BaTiO3 lattice, thereby affecting both the stability of the crystal structure and the phase transition phenomena.

AB - The aim of this study is to explore the influence of the processing route on the structural and physical properties of bulk MgTiO3 ceramics. Commercially available MgO and TiO2 powders were mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill. Green bodies were formed by an isostatic pressure of 300 MPa. The sintering of these samples was done either by the Two-Step Sintering (TSS) approach or by conventional pressureless sintering followed by Hot Isostatic Pressing (post-HIPing). The first set of compacts was sintered by TSS in air at 1300 degrees C for 30 min and the next step was performed at 1200 degrees C for 20 h. The density of the obtained samples after the two-step sintering reached almost 90% of the theoretical density (%TD). The second set of compacts was sintered at 1400 degrees C for 30 min in air. The samples without open porosity were post-sintered by the HIP at 1200 degrees C for 2 h in an argon atmosphere at a pressure of 200 MPa. The density significantly increased up to 96%TD. The differences between samples prepared by these two techniques were also analyzed by XRD and SEM. The lattice vibration spectra were obtained using Raman spectroscopy and they indicate a high degree of lattice disorder, as well as high values of the oxygen vacancy concentration. Electrical characteristic were established in the frequency range from 10 kHz to 10 GHz. The choice of the processing route had considerable influence on structural and physical properties of MgTiO3 ceramics.

AB - The mechanical activation can help reduce production costs and modify cordierite-based materials. In this study, the structure and electrical properties of the mechanically activated MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 system have been analyzed. The mixtures of MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 powders were mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill for time periods ranging from 0 to 160 min. Structural investigations were performed on the obtained powders. The effects of activation and a two-step sintering process on the microstructure and crystal structure were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The thermal stability was analyzed using DTA. Electrical measurements showed variations of the dielectric constant (epsilon(r)) and loss tangent (tan delta) as a function of the time of mechanical treatment.
