AB - Multiferroic materials attracted a lot of attention in recent years because of their significant
scientific interest and technological applications. The multiferroic core/shell powders have a better
connectivity between the phases, resulting in superior dielectric and magneto electric properties. In
this study, the influence of preparation condition on structure and properties of BaTiO3/α-Fe2O3
core/shell composite materials was examined. The five samples were obtained by varying synthesis
conditions, such as synthesized method (co-precipitation and sonochemical method) and pH values of
solution. XRD and Raman spectroscopy analyses were performed in order to determine phase
composition and structural changes within samples. Morphology modifications were examined by
SEM and EDS analyses. Finally, effect of structural and microstructural changes on magnetic and
electrical properties was detected and explained.

AB - New agar-based composite films with increasing Cu-carbonate and Cu-phosphate mineral phase content were prepared by in situ mineralization and solvent casting method. SEM and optical analysis revealed that Cu-carbonate phase had better compatibility with agar matrix than Cu-phosphate phase. Incorporation of both mineral phases improved mechanical and water vapor barrier properties of the obtained mineralized films, in concentration dependent manner. When 5 mM of carbonate precursor was incorporated into agar matrix, mechanical resistance was enchanced for 44% and water vapor barrier property for 40%. The release of Cu (II) was higher in acidic conditions for both mineralized composites and remained in the range of specific release limits for this metal. In addition, both mineralized composite films exhibited distinctive antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) bacteria. Overall, the Cu-carbonate and Cu-phosphate mineralized agar films showed potential to be used for food packaging materials, agriculture or medical purposes.

AB - A facile synthesis was employed for three polyhedral oligo silsequioxanes (POSS), obtaining incompletely condensed structures with fern-like and cubic morphologies. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (H-1 NMR) indicated the successful synthesis of the proposed POSS structures. The hydroxyl groups affected the manner and type of POSS morphology, as seen under a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a transmission electron microscope (TEM). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) showed the availability of surface hydroxyl groups that contributed to the formation of a higher amount of char residue, as found from TGA analysis. The highest decomposition temperature (281 degrees C) and the least char residue were found for a cross-linkable POSS, obtained by esterification of the hydroxyl groups with methacryloyl chloride.

AB - One-dimensional (1D) TiO2 nanotubes perpendicular to the substrate were obtained by electrochemical oxidation of titanium foil in an acid electrolyte. In order to alter the crystallinity and the morphology of films the as-anodized amorphous TiO2 nanotube films were sintered at elevated temperatures. The evolution of the morphology was visualized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while the crystalline structure was investigated by Xray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The chemical composition was studied by Xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The effects of crystallinity and morphology of TiO2 nanotube (NTs) films on photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) in an aqueous solution under UV light irradiation were also investigated. The TiO2 nanotubes sintered at 650 degrees C for 30 min had the highest degree of crystallinity and exhibited the best photocatalytic activity among the studied TiO2 nanotube films.

AB - Two bimetallic (Zn/Cu) alginate based nanocomposites, impregnated with carbonate or phosphate mineral phase, were prepared by a facile procedure. Mineralized samples exhibited different morphologies and properties when compared to the non-mineralized sample. Antimicrobial testing against Escherichia coil, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans showed that mineralized samples are more efficient than non-mineralized in elimination of microorganisms. The results of this study suggest that bimetallic mineralized alginates could be potentially used as affordable, easy to produce antimicrobial materials.

AB - Multilayers consisting of five (Al/Ti) bilayers were deposited on (100) silicon wafers. On top was deposited the Ti layer, aimed at preventing Al from diffusing to the surface upon laser treatment. The total thickness of the thin-film structure was 200 nm. Laser irradiations with Nd:YAG picoseconds laser pulses in the defocused regime were performed in air. Laser beam energy was 4 mJ and laser spot diameter on the sample surface was 3 mm (fluence 0.057 J cm(-2)). The samples were treated with different numbers of laser pulses. Structural characterizations were performed by different analytical methods and nano-hardness was also measured. Laser processing induced layer intermixing, formation of titanium aluminides, oxidation of the surface titanium layer and enhanced surface roughness. Aluminum appears at the sample surface only for the highest density of laser irradiation. Laser processing induces increment of nano-hardness by approximately 20% and decrease of residual Young's modulus for a few percentages from the starting value of the untreated samples. These results can be interesting toward achieving structures with a selective extent of Al-Ti reactivity in this multilayered system, within the development of biocompatible materials.

AB - New bioactive and antimicrobial biomaterials were produced by alginate-mediated biomineralization with Zn-mineral phase. The synthesis procedure is simple, cost-effective and resulted in. two different Zn-mineralized alginate nanocomposites, Zn-carbonate/Zn-alginate and Zn-phosphate/Zn-alginate. The presence of Zn-mineral phase and its type, have significantly affected nanocomposite morphology, stability, total metallic loading and potential to release Zn(II) in physiological environment. Antimicrobial experiments showed that both types of Zn-mineralized nanocomposites exhibit strong antimicrobial effect against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. These results suggest that alginate biomineralization, where minerals are salts of essential metallic ions like Zn(II), represents a'good strategy for designing multifunctional biomaterials for potential biomedical applications.

AB - The structural characteristics of polymer nanocomposites with functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix have been studied in relation to nanofiller loading and surface functionality. Different functional groups have been covalently attached on the MWCNTs sidewalls in order to induce interfacial interactions at nanofiller/polymer interface, which resulted in an improved nanomechanical features. Structural properties of nanocomposites, studied with XRD and Raman analysis, indicated the most pronounced decrease in a degree of amorphousness for samples containing 0.5 and 1 wt% of MWCNTs functionalized with dapsone (dapson-MWCNT) and diethyl malonate (dem-MWCNT). SEM and TEM micrographs confirmed improved dispersibility of the MWCNTs modified with aromatic structure of dapsone inside PMMA matrix. A significant increase in a glass transition temperature of over 60 degrees C has been found for the 1 wt% dapson-MWCNT nanocomposite. Additional modification of dapson-MWCNT by further increasing aromaticity and voluminosity of attached moiety (fid-MWCNT), showed 30 degrees C increases in a glass transition temperature at 4 wt% of nanofiller loading, which is similar to shift of 37 degrees C with loading of MWCNTs modified with ester terminal group. A maximum increase of 56% of reduced modulus and 86% of hardness was obtained for 1 wt% loading of dapson-MWCNT nanofiller.

AB - New mineralized, agar-based nanocomposite films (Zn-carbonate and Zn-phosphate/agar) were produced by a combination of in situ precipitation and a casting method. The presence of minerals significantly influenced the morphology, properties and functionality of the obtained nanocomposites. Reinforcement with the Zn-mineral phase improved the mechanical properties of the carbonate-mineralized films, but had a negligible effect on the phosphate-mineralized samples. Both nanocomposites showed improved optical and thermal properties, better Zn(II) release potential in a slightly acidic environment and exhibited antimicrobial activity against S. aureus. These results suggest that Zn-mineralized agar nanocomposite films could be potentially used as affordable, eco-friendly and active food packaging materials.

AB - In this study, porous macro- and micro-cellular wollastonite-based ceramics was synthesized. A ceramic precursor, methylhydrocyclosiloxane, together with micro-sized CaCO3, was used as a starting material. After 20 min of ultrasound treatment, and calcination at 250 degrees C for 30 min, different pore-forming agents were added to the as-obtained powders. Differential thermal analysis was used to determine characteristic temperatures of processes occurring within powders during heating. Based on the obtained results, the sintering regime was set up. The prepared mixtures were pressed into pallets and sintered at 900 degrees C. During the sintering regime, porous wollastonite-based ceramics was obtained. The phase composition of the sintered samples, as well as the microstructures, were analyzed by using X-ray diffraction and SEM. A two-phase system was detected in all samples, CaSiO3 wollastonite and Ca2SiO4 larnite, and their ratio varied with each pore-forming agent. It was observed that the addition of different pore-forming agents resulted in significantly different microstructures. In a batch test, the influence of pH, the contact time and the initial ion concentration on the adsorption efficiency of As+5, Cr(+6)and phosphate ions on the synthesized adsorbents were studied. Time-dependent adsorption is best described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Weber-Morris model, which predict intra-particle diffusion as a rate-controlling step of the overall process. High adsorption capacities, 21.93, 23.88, and 27.29 mg g(-1), were obtained for the CaCO3-siloxane-nanocellulose sorbent, and similar/lower capacities were obtained for the CaCO3-siloxane-PMMA and CaCO3-siloxane-cotton wool adsorbents.

AB - Due to pozzolanic characteristics, fly ash is commonly used as a cement replacement in construction composites. Addition of natural clays with sorption ability (i.e. zeolite and bentonite) in to the fly ash based construction materials is of both scientific and industrial interest. Namely, due to the application of sorptive clay minerals, it is possible to immobilize toxic heavy metals from the composite structure. The thermal compatibility of fly ash and zeolite, as well as fly ash and bentonite, within the composite was observed during sintering procedure. The starting components were used in 1: 1 ratio and they were applied without additional mechanical treatment. The used compaction pressure for the tablets was 2 t.cm(-2). The sintering process was conducted at 1000 degrees C and 1200 degrees C for two hours in the air atmosphere. The mineralogical phase composition of the non-treated and sintered samples was analyzed using X-ray diffraction method. Scanning electron microscopy was applied in the analysis of the microstructure of starting and sintered samples. The thermal behavior was observed via DTA method. The influence of temperature on the properties of fly ash-zeolite and fly ash-bentonite composites was investigated.

AB - Since cordierite, 2MgO center dot 2Al(2)O(3)center dot 5SiO(2) (MAS), is a very useful high-temperature ceramic material, it is important to decrease its sintering temperature. In order to accelerate the process of sintering, 5.00 mass% MoO3 was added to the starting mixtures. The mechanical activation of the starting mixtures was performed in a high-energy ball mill in time intervals from 0 to 160 min. After the activation, starting mixtures were sintered at 1300 A degrees C for 2 h. In order to determine the impact of mechanical activation on particle size distribution and powders morphology, the mechanically treated powders were characterized by a laser light-scattering particle size analyzer and scanning electron microscopy. The phase composition of the starting mixtures and sintered samples was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction method. In order to determine temperature intervals of chemical reactions and phase transitions, differential thermal analyses (DTA) and thermo-gravimetric analysis were used. Kissinger's equation was employed to calculate apparent activation energies of various processes that occur within the system during heating. Based on the obtained DTA results, it was established that mechanical activation along with MoO3 additive has influence on sintering temperature which was decreased for more than 100 A degrees C, comparing to the literature data.

abstract = "Since cordierite, 2MgO center dot 2Al(2)O(3)center dot 5SiO(2) (MAS), is a very useful high-temperature ceramic material, it is important to decrease its sintering temperature. Based on the obtained DTA results, it was established that mechanical activation along with MoO3 additive has influence on sintering temperature which was decreased for more than 100 A degrees C, comparing to the literature data.",

AB - The aim of this study is to explore the influence of the processing route on the structural and physical properties of bulk MgTiO3 ceramics. Commercially available MgO and TiO2 powders were mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill. Green bodies were formed by an isostatic pressure of 300 MPa. The sintering of these samples was done either by the Two-Step Sintering (TSS) approach or by conventional pressureless sintering followed by Hot Isostatic Pressing (post-HIPing). The first set of compacts was sintered by TSS in air at 1300 degrees C for 30 min and the next step was performed at 1200 degrees C for 20 h. The density of the obtained samples after the two-step sintering reached almost 90% of the theoretical density (%TD). The second set of compacts was sintered at 1400 degrees C for 30 min in air. The samples without open porosity were post-sintered by the HIP at 1200 degrees C for 2 h in an argon atmosphere at a pressure of 200 MPa. The density significantly increased up to 96%TD. The differences between samples prepared by these two techniques were also analyzed by XRD and SEM. The lattice vibration spectra were obtained using Raman spectroscopy and they indicate a high degree of lattice disorder, as well as high values of the oxygen vacancy concentration. Electrical characteristic were established in the frequency range from 10 kHz to 10 GHz. The choice of the processing route had considerable influence on structural and physical properties of MgTiO3 ceramics.

AB - Commercially available ZnO powder was mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill. In order to investigate the specific surface area, pore volume and microstructure of non-activated and mechanically activated ZnO powders the authors performed N-2 physisorption, SEM and TEM. Crystallite size and lattice microstrain were analyzed by X-ray diffraction method. XRD patterns indicate that peak intensities are getting lower and expend with activation time. The reduction in crystallite size and increasing of lattice microstrain with prolonged milling time were determined applying the Rietveld's method. The difference between non-activated and the activated powder has been also observed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). XPS is used for investigating the chemical bonding of ZnO powder by analyzing the energy of photoelectrons. The lattice vibration spectra were obtained using Raman spectroscopy. In Raman spectra some changes along with atypical resonant scattering were noticed, which were caused by mechanical activation.

AB - In this study, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibers with ethyl vanillin as an active compound were prepared using electrospinning technique. The final products of electrospinning process were in the form of nanofibers films. PVA/ethyl vanillin nanofibers, having fibers diameters in the range 100-1700 nm, were successfully electrospun from ethanol/water mixture of PVA and ethyl vanillin. The effects of immobilization process on ethyl vanillin thermal properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results of DSC showed significant influence of immobilization process on thermal properties of ethyl vanillin. It was noticed that melting point of immobilized ethyl vanillin was lower (similar to 55 A degrees C) compared to free flavor (similar to 77 A degrees C). Our results showed that films based on PVA/ethyl vanillin nanofibers are mechanically stable.

AB - The aim of this paper was mechanochemical preparation of magnesium titanates. Powder mixtures of starting oxides MgO and TiO2 were mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill for the time interval from 0 to 160 minutes. Structural, stereological, thermal characterizations were performed on produced powders. The effects of activation on morphology were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and particle size analyses, while the changes in the phase composition were determined by X-ray diffraction. It is determined that the first traces of MgTiO3 became detectable after 40 minutes of milling, while after 160 minutes the pure magnesium titanates were noticed. The differential thermal analyses and thermo gravimetric analysis, in temperatures range from 25 oC to 1100 oC, has been performed in order to investigate thermal behavior of the mixtures.

AB - In this article, the advantages of combined sintering in comparison with the conventional one, of mechanically activated magnesium titanate ceramic were investigated. The stoichiometric mixtures of MgO and TiO2 were mechano-chemically activated for 0, 10, 40, 80 and 160 minutes by ball milling and then isostatically pressed (CIP) to form green bodies. Conventional sintering was realized by heating up to 1400 degrees C and hold for 30 minutes in air atmosphere. Resulting ceramic samples with closed porosity were post-sintered by pressure assisted technique Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) at 1280 degrees C/3h in argon atmosphere with a pressure of 200 MPa. The best results were observed in the case of samples post-sintered by HIP, when single-phase MgTiO3 samples with relative density of 96% were prepared.

AB - The effects of Zn-doping on the dielectric behavior and electrical properties of bulk alpha-Fe2O3 have been studied. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the presence of two phases in all samples: hematite and spinel ZnFe2O4, with the amount of spinel phase increasing with increasing Zn content. Scanning electron microscopy analysis combined with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy showed that the Zn-bearing phase occurred in the form of individual spinel ZnFe2O4 grains in a hematite matrix. DC conductivity was measured in the temperature range 25-225 degrees C (298-498 K). Impedance spectroscopy measurements in the same temperature range were carried out in the frequency range 100Hz to 10 MHz. Increase in the Zn content resulted in increased electrical conductivity and higher values of the dielectric constant. The resistance and capacitance of grains and grain boundaries were analyzed by modeling the experimental results using an equivalent circuit.

AB - Due to its outstanding electrical characteristics, such as the low temperature expansion coefficient, low dielectric constant and good mechanical properties, cordierite, 2MgO center dot 2Al(2)O(3)center dot 5SiO(2), is a very attractive high-temperature ceramic material. In order to accelerate the process of sintering, 2.50 mass% Bi2O3 has been added to the starting mixtures. Liquid phase sintering caused by the presence of bismuth-oxide lowers the temperature of cordierite formation. The mechanical activation of the starting mixtures (0-56 min in vibro-mill) additionally lowers sintering temperatures. The sintering process was performed at 1200, 1300, 1350 and 1400 degrees C, for 2 h. The particle size analysis (PSA) was employed in order to determine the changes in the particle size of the mechanically treated powders. The phase composition of the starting powders and sintered materials was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction method. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used in the analysis of the powder morphology.

AB - Starting mixtures of BaCO3, ZnO, and TiO2 powders are mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill for various periods of time. The powders obtained are sintered isothermally at 1100A degrees C for 120 min. Non-isothermal sintering process is followed by measurements with a sensitive dilatometer, as well. Results of microstructure characterization using SEM analyses along with DTA analyses are provided. These results are correlated with the values of electric resistivity, capacitance, and loss tangent of the samples, and it is found that with increasing milling time, the increase in values of electrical properties is noticed.

The resulting powders were compacted into pellets and isothermally sintered at 1250 degrees C for 2h with a heating rate of 10 degrees C/min. X-ray diffraction analysis of obtained powders and sintered samples was performed in order to investigate changes of the phase composition. The microstructure of sintered samples was examined by scanning electron microscopy. The photoacoustic phase and amplitude spectra of sintered samples were measured as a function of the laser beam modulating frequency using a transmission detection configuration. Fitting of experimental data enabled determination of photoacoustic properties including thermal diffusivity. Based on the results obtained correlation between thermal diffusivity and experimental conditions, as well the samples microstructure characteristics, was discussed.

AB - Mixtures of BaCO3-ZnO-TiO2 were mechanically activated using high-energy planetary ball mill during 20, 40 and 80 min. As the time of mechanical activation increased, the decrease in particle size was observed. The effect of milling on microstructure was investigated by scanning electron microscopy, as well. Sintering process was performed in air at 1100 and 1200 C for 2 h. Various phases are present within mixtures sintered at 1100 and 1200 degrees C, and almost pure BaZn2Ti4O11 phase was obtained after 80 min of milling and sintering at 1200 degrees C for 2 h.
